Was looking for a quiet, but delicious spot for lunch on our way out of town. When we asked a young man behind the counter at Sans Liege where he'd go if he only had one more meal here for the next six months, he sent us here and I'm so grateful. The rabbit special for Easter and steak frites were delicious, their quail made me so happy, it's kind of a thing for me. Superb services! We arrived with a same day reservation and were treated with the best courtesy! From the moment we arrived, the receptionist was kind and accommodating. Although we were sitting outdoors, we were warm with the heating lamp and were checked often. Truly appreciated because of my elderly parents were not able to tolerate the cold. Now the best part was the excellent food that brought me right back to Paris. Appetizers were escargots, onion soups and salad! Escargot was delicious and very interestingly were two in each shell! Dipping the warm bread in that oil is just a great start for the meal. Salad is fresh! The onion soup is superb!!! None like any onion soup we had! Oh, and the bread is warm with crunchy thin crust! Soooo good! We ordered the hanger steak, elk steak, lamb chops and beef tartare for main course and all of them were prepared to perfection!! I love medium rare for my steak and really enjoyed the right temperature!! And definitely don't skip the desserts, we ordered three different desserts to share! A LITTLE BIT OF FRANCE IN PASO ROBLES His accent flowed thick as if he'd just flown in from Paris. "Let me check if we have any tables available tonight." We knew we were in for a treat. We wanted good, authentic French cuisine for the day's final meal. We came across Bistro Laurent while researching - and quickly called to reserve our spot. "I have great news." He said, with his elegant French voice. "I have one table available at eight-thirty, and it would be a pleasure to have you this evening." We entered this lively, orange-glowing restaurant to be seated along the wall banquette. As we walked through this small, square-like dining room environment, we peeked in through the swinging, copper kitchen doors to see the Chef wiping the plate of a delicate entree. "Is that a small pumpkin filled with seafood?" I asked Marc, the gentleman we spoke with on the phone. He smiled, "It's one of our specials. Everyone is ordering it." We pause mid-step to let the servers pass with their classic French Onion Soup before approaching the table. "Time for wine!" I blurted out. "Tonight is going to be a feast!" The cool thing about sitting along the wall is watching everyone eat and imagining why they do it that way. Some are silent as they sip a local Cabernet Sauvignon - like wine's version of meditation. Others clink their silverware loudly as they enjoy a tender Filet Mignon--parties in the center and date nights in the corners. Some dining rooms feel like a theater filled with individual acting tables - developing a motion picture even Steven Spielberg would enjoy...and this was one of them. The time had come to enjoy this kitchen's passion - expressed within the flavors - and we were impressed. Chef's Potato Leak soup was deliciously creamier than even the closest competition. The Burrata was more tender, and the tomatoes - juicy, flavorful, and exquisitely seasoned. They tasted like they were just picked from the garden a few minutes prior. As we finished our appetizers and prepared to receive our entrees, I was already thinking about our next visit to try their Gnocchi dish - with more of those garden-grown tomatoes! Maybe we'll order a bottle of "Tattinger Champagne"...we'll find something to celebrate. The service in this intimate dining room is light, friendly, and approachable. The staff's demeanor is professional and supportive - to their tables and each other. It mirrors the pleasant conversations we heard oozing out of the kitchen between the cooks and the Chef...like they enjoyed their jobs. Worst dining experience I've ever had. Stay away from this place. We made reservations two days in advance and showed up 5 minutes before the reservation time. The person seating us took us to an outdoor naked picnic table underneath a tent. I peeked inside the restaurant and saw very nice tables all decorated with fine linen and settings. The inside tables were virtually unoccupied. I told the seater that we'd prefer to eat indoors. So he grumbled and took us inside. He sat us at a small 2 person table and said we had to vacate the table in only an hour. I asked why? He said we have reservations for that table. So now we're under pressure to quickly dine, pay and leave when we have absolutely no control over how long it's going to take to prepare a meal that we haven't even selected yet. This was a really poor start for a dining experience. So we looked at the wine list and most wines were over $100.... We didn't order wine. So My spouse ordered the striped bass. I ordered the Rack of Lamb. So they brought the plates with only the entree on it, but they said we could have one side. My spouse ordered the green peas, and I ordered cheese potato dish. that's it. That's the entire dinner. The bill was over $100 for basically a snack. The level of snobishness and rudeness for this establishment was unbelievable. Again, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. read more

We went here yesterday cause it seemed everything is closed on Tuesday. But I was excited to check out a French restaurant. The food was good 3 rating . We both felt it was too peppery. Too much pepper in the French onion soup. My coq au vin was good rating a 4, but I've never had it before. They had two girls serving us water and bread. The service was good , rating 4 , but our server didn't come back to see how we were doing. I like the manager I thought she was friendly and attentive. It seem kind of disorganized. What I don't understand is why they put all so Close together during Covid. They could've spaced out the seating. The atmosphere is pleasant a rating 4 . The manager/sommelier at BL Brasserie was kind enough to accommodate me last minute for a seat at the bar on a surprisingly busy Tuesday evening in May. I sat at the bar, enjoying the people watching and the busyness of the serving staff. I was so delighted by the authentic, delicious French bistro food I enjoyed. I started with lobster bisque - sweet, buttery and rich with lobster flavor and pieces. My entree was a perfectly cooked hanger steak with a side of frites. I sipped a lovely 2016 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape with dinner. I was so full from my soup and entree that I opted out of dessert, but, next time, I'll make sure I don't. I have two small complaints: Staff was rather aloof. It was a busy night and I know so many places are short staffed due to the pandemic. It wasn't enough to deter me from not visiting again. I just like to feel welcome and I felt more like a burden despite trying to hit it off with folks and spending a decent amount of money for a solo diner. I saw management and many staff members not wearing masks while mask mandates were still in place for SLO. This means you had to wear a mask inside unless you are eating and drinking. These employees were doing neither. They'd often take their masks off to talk to customers, letting their masks dangle off their chins in a tacky way. I found it bothersome that they would potentially risk their customer's health - and their own - let alone violate the mandate policy. Not a good look. Luckily they were far away from me and did not engage with me without their masks on. I felt safer and more welcome at Les Petites Canailles (where I have eaten twice now as a visitor to Paso Robles), but, the food at BL Brasserie was delicious, authentic, and the experience of Chef Laurent truly shows. I really appreciate the more "old school" vibe at BL, but I did not appreciate the lack of warmth and mask etiquette. I'd give it another try in the future. But, it might have to wait until I can be guaranteed a table outside, or we're further out of this pandemic situation. read more

Tasty food and good service. The charcuterie is a nice choice to start with a good array of options plus the best Dijon mustard I have ever had. Steak with peppercorn sauce is an excellent pairing recommended by my server. For a dessert I recommend the raspberry clafoutis, not too heavy, and the raspberry flavor was on point. read more

The portions are that of a fancy restaurant made to slowly savor each bite. Every drink comes from a glass, bottle or can. It was very all very impressive and far from what I am accustomed. She ordered the steak tartare--not knowing it came raw--and barely touched it. Our server was kind and offered to switch it, but when I politely stepped in to help (since she was too shy), things went south fast. The manager marched over and snapped, "What's wrong with your food?" in front of the whole room. No class. No respect. My girlfriend was so embarrassed, she cried right there at the table. Total mood-killer on what was supposed to be a special night. And if that wasn't enough, I called the owner himself the next day to calmly explain the situation--and he hung up on me. That tells you everything you need to know about how they treat their customers. Fake smiles when you're paying, complete disregard when you're not. They may have covered the bill, but no amount of free food makes up for humiliation. If you want French food in Paso, go anywhere else. These people don't deserve your business. read more

My husband and I came here during our honeymoon trip. We ordered the escargot, the lobster bisque, the beef sandwich, and the mushroom ravioli. The best part of the meal was the mushroom ravioli because the pasta was fresh and the flavors were perfect. I've always wanted to try escargot. Now that I've tried it, I don't need to try it again. I'm giving 4/5 stars because the service wasn't the best. The two servers seemed to be more attentive to the other tables than to ours. Overall, it was a cute and tasty lunch spot. read more

Our first ever experience with French cuisine. Did not know what to expect. We were thankful they were open until 10pm because we got out of the spa around 8:30pm and hungry! Intimate feel, loved the decor, seated fairly quickly for a Tuesday night, offseason, no reservations. We found the simplicity of flavors, highlighting each dish, absolutely refreshing. We shared both the roasted Quail and mussel starters followed by the warm potato and goat cheese salad - all are amazing! Nothing drowning in flavors or over excessive spices. My husband had the pork chop with mustard sauce and I had the crispy crab risotto with shrimp - both absolutely delicious. We were also the last patrons and did not feel rushed. Mashed potatoes were great but steamed vegetables were tasteless. Wife had shrimp on risotto and she liked it. Early on, we requested to be moved to a table outside where it was much quieter and were told the table was not available. Meanwhile, the French Onion soup and the Butternut Squash soup were both great. The Mussels Mariniere was tasteless. The salads were uninteresting. The New York steak was cooked correctly. A lovely Chateau Neuf du Pape was recommended, and was delicious. As we left (without dessert because the noise was too much), we noticed that the table outside that we had requested was still empty. Four of us recently dined at Restaurant BL Brasserie, and I must say, the experience was a mixed bag. The first impression was delightful - the host inquired if we'd like a glass of champagne but didn't mention the price or offer any choice. We reasonably assumed it was complimentary. The menu design and concept exuded elegance, setting high expectations for the evening. The food lived up to those expectations; it was undeniably delicious. The impeccable service added to the charm of the evening, making us feel like royalty. The ambiance perfectly fits a French restaurant, creating a romantic and authentic atmosphere. However, there was a significant hiccup in our otherwise pleasant experience. To our surprise, when the bill arrived, we were charged a whopping $17.00 per glass, totaling $78.00 for the champagne. This was disappointing, as we felt misled. To add to the disappointment, our bill didn't include the price of the wine we purchased, forcing us to point out the omission to the staff. After some negotiation, the champagne cost was removed, and the wine we ordered was added to the bill. In summary, BL Brasserie offers an elegant menu, delicious food, impeccable service, and a fitting French ambiance. However, be aware of the offer for champagne when seated. Check with the maître d' to see the wine being served and the cost. I suggest to the restaurant management that when it asks its guests if they would like to start with a glass of champagne, it shows the guests which of the 10+ labels it offers and explains the cost per glass. read more

Later we called to confirm the reservations (because of the phone service we received was horrible), and again the hostess - which was already in a bad mood as soon as they open at 5:30pm - she was rude again. The day of our reservations we visited an elite winery (which I won't mention by name to reserve their privacy) asked us what our plans for the rest of the day were, when I mentioned this place and that I was nervous the visit wouldn't go well due to the already attitude problem we had from their hostess, they informed us that they hear that ALL THE TIME about the same issue. I was floored. SURE ENOUGH, when we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess (a white, blonde older woman) was there unhappy as ever. It got to the point where we preferred to take our money literally anywhere else. We cancelled with her and went to enjoy Paso Robes elsewhere!!! Hit or Miss on the menu, but mostly a miss. Despite having a reservation for weeks ahead of time, we were seated in the patio without being asked. We would have much preferred sitting in the main dining room, but we weren't giving a choice. The hostess/manager give us immediate attitude when one in our party asked for ice with sparkling water. Questioning the request and giving us this look like "are you crazy?". Turns out that's how we like it. When the ice melted, it did not get refilled without a request. Now I recognize this is a minor point, but it is kind of indicative of the level of service we had at BL brasserie. They just didn't notice anything. A really fine restaurant would recognize that two of its patrons requested ice water, and would make the effort to make sure that the ice water was refilled with ice, and water. A hospitality thing, but they probably wouldn't understand. Much confusion over our waiter was, as we waited a good 15 minutes before we finally flagged down a waiter. French Onion soup was barely passable. Hardly any cheese, and shamefully under seasoned broth. Bread service, which unfortunately arrived after soups were on the table, featured warm crunchy rolls with soft butter, and was excellent. As the sun set, we started getting chilly on the patio. Now the manager had informed us that we could ask for the heater above our heads to be turned on at any time. We had to ask four different staffers to get the heater turned on. And it was only when we told the 4th person, "this is our fourth request to get the heat turned on" did a waiter come over with a remote control and attempt to start the heater. Which didn't work. So the manager lady came over and flipped a master switch behind a wall and then started the heater. Did she apologize? Of course not. Instead, she was defensive, as if it was our fault. " We're very busy today". "The other people you asked didn't know how to turn on the heater". And "it's on now." She just had a terrible attitude. The food was just average. Chicken was dry. Pork chop was normal, good but not great. Pomme Frites average. Salmon was very good. The halibut was dry and average. Two fillets, both requested medium rare, but one was absurdly rare. One diner in our party left the raw pink center in the middle of his plate to be returned to the kitchen, uneaten. The server didn't notice, or didn't care. Side dish of scalloped potatoes criminally under seasoned. A request for a second glass of ice water required a reminder to the waiter who entirely forgot about it. Creme brulee, average. Sorbet and Macarons good. A chocolate dessert was effectively awful dry chocolate paste. There's got to be a better choice in Paso Robles. read more

I never would have though that 11 years after writing my first review for BL (it used to be called Bistro Laurent) that I'd now be a Paso local. While I still love going to BL, please please please offer online reservations! I've swung by a couple times recently and gotten a borderline snooty decline from the hostess while trying to have lunch. Yes, I know I should call ahead of time but both times I couldn't get a table, it didn't really seem all that busy. We recently had their Valentine's dinner there with wine pairings and it was phenomenal. I love the French gentleman who works there, always great wine recommendations. read more

A mix of fresh California style and French je ne sais quoi, it was a delightful evening to cap off a few days visiting wineries. A group of us have been looking forward to having lunch here. We were seated and then were forgotten. There was only one other table inside with customers. We finally got water and then waited again to get menus. Had to ask for the wine list. Not a good start. Waiter was pretty indifferent about us being there. 4 of us ordered the Crab Avocado Salad. Another ordered the Warm potato salad and goat cheese. The Crab and avocado was all mushed together but was worth trying. This could not have been fresh crab. It was really fishy and we should have sent them all back. I did not even finish mine. We asked for bread and was told it would be 25 minutes before the bread came out. UGH! We actually did get the bread sooner, but as an afterthought. Needless to say, we were very disappointed and I would imagine we will not come back here for lunch again.
