We stopped at this Black Bear on our way home from a conference, and none of us were disappointed at all. Their portions are huge and right for the price. I got the "Little" club sandwich because I didn't know how big it would be, and it was perfect (two pieces instead of four). The brownie sundae was superb, and I had to ask my colleagues to help me eat it because I hadn't anticipated the size for the low price! Stopped here around 6:25pm on a Saturday evening. There was a wait. We decided to request counter seating and were sat immediately. Pam was our waitress. She was friendly and competent. One of the things that impressed me here was the staff's willingness to pitch in and help each other, pleasantly. That's nice to see in a restaurant setting! Wtg guys and gals! One thing that impressed me less is what happened to the size of the ribeye? It has gotten so puny! It was thin and grisly. One of the staff members mentioned it's gotten smaller over time. My son Jeremiah said that he liked Lee Ann . because she was very friendly and she was always asking if we needed anything else. Have only been there once, please do not order the chicken fried steak possibly the worst thing I've consumed in my entire life. I'm gonna give it a 3 star rating so I won't hurt the rating so much and also the possibility of other items being good. Great food! But slow service. 1. Arrived today at 11am. 2. Was seated at the bar. 3. Order was taken at 1126am (hash brown scramble + California omelette) 4. Food came out 35mn later. We only ordered two plates and it took 35mn for it to come out. I'm glad we got here early enough before it got crowded. I feel bad for those waiting 45mn to get seated and another 45-1hr for the food. The food however, was GREAT! Hash brown and omelette, hit the spot. We stopped here on Black Friday, not because we were shopping but bc we are driving from IL to central coast CA. It's conveniently off the highway. It's also next to a big outlet mall. The menu and reviews looked good. The hostess was great and our server Carli was also pretty good. Other than that I don't have much else to say about this place that's positive... While we did get seated right away, it took a long time to get our food. Carli apologized and kept checking on us but apparently management was not expecting it to be so busy so part of the kitchen was not open and the food was slow. It's BLACK FRIDAY. What did you thin was going to happen? People are shopping and hungry! It's probably one of the busiest eating days of the year! Here's what we ordered: For my 3yo: Mac and cheese and fruit and chicken noodle soup. Soup was fine, nothing special. Mac and cheese...Kraft easy mac. I HATE this. If you're gonna put Mac and cheese on your menu at least make it decent and not microwave Mac and cheese. Especially if your restaurant markets itself as "good old fashioned comfort food" Husband ordered chicken pot pie and mashed potatoes. It was actually pretty tasty. Good choice. I wasn't that hungry so I figured I'd be ok with a taco salad. HOLY CRAP. This salad was the size of my child!!! No kidding! And it was just ok. Too damn big. People who want a salad aren't looking for a monster sized plate of lettuce! What a waste of food and money! All of those things are quite easy to make.. Microwave the Mac and cheese and a pot pie. Throw some lettuce together and some cooked ground beef. Yet it took over an hour to get. Just kind of ridiculous. It would've been nice to see a manager make rounds in the dining room to check on customers and apologize. Do some damage control. Chat with patrons. I didn't sera manager until we were checking out and he was in the counter area, not out on the floor. I mean maybe he was in back helping in the kitchen, i don't know. But it would've been nice to see him backing up his servers and providing some customer service. If you're going to have a restaurant right by a mall, open on Black Friday, there's got to be better planning involved! read more

Sat at the counter for breakfast . Ordered eggs over easy , bacon , hash browns and toast . Service was good and quick . Eggs came fried hard , asked for two over easy and never got them . Hash browns soaked in grease , bacon more burnt the crisp . Couldn't eat anything but the toast . Went and got pack of donuts from store , was hungry still . Twenty bucks for food I couldn't eat . It's more of a 2.5 star. Chose this place as opposed to fast food or chipotle. We were there at 8pm on the way back to LA on a Sunday night. It was about half filled. Hostess cleaned a table for us but not all the trash under the table. In general the carpet needs a major vacuuming. Crumbs of food were everywhere as well as napkins and paper. It was just messy. Food was mediocre. I had a club sandwich with fries and enjoyed it. Hard to mess up a sandwich. Husband ordered tri tip medium rare. It was chewy and flavorless. Mashed potatoes were good. Waitress forgot his side salad then gave us the wrong bill lol. She was nice though. If I had to choose again I might go with chipotle but this place ain't bad for simple foods. My experience at this location was extremely disappointing. Our waitress was not friendly and when I asked for ranch, she gave me blue cheese. Then, she argued that the ranch was chunky and had bacon in it. But, it still tasted like blue cheese! The next disappointing thing was the food that came out. I ordered a chicken pot pie, but the watermelon slice that came with it was ridiculously thin. It broke into pieces when I picked it up; I thought it was a joke. Also, they need to clarify on their menu what kind of vegetables come in the pot pie because I am allergic to mushrooms and they put mushrooms in theirs, which I never had heard of before. The only good thing about the restaurant was their coffee, but a cup of orange juice costs $5! Do yourselves a favor and save your money. I won't be coming back anytime soon. read more

If I could give a zero I would. The service was terrible. The waitress spilled the syrup all over my pancakes, soaking them, and then said, "Oops, I'll get you more syrup." I had to ask another waitress to get me a new a dish. Our server never apologized or asked if I didn't like syrup. Then had to wait another 10 minutes for my food. I have seen the signs for this diner and have always wanted to stop on our way home from the Sierra's - finally we did. It's a homey location with a bear motif - some amazing photos are framed & hung throughout the restaurant. We were greeted promptly & seated (as requested) near a window to watch out car. They have a large menu, with many options (oh how I wish they had a turkey burger though) and all of their portions are rather large....they do have smaller plates to order, and a children's menu. The service was great, out server was quite attentive, and the food was tasty. My husband had a club sandwich that was HUGE, my son had a small plate BLT & I ordered a Gardenburger (would rather have had turkey) in a lettuce wrap. The ONLY complaint I have is that the fries were not crisp and were very greasy.... They were hot, so likely just came out of the fryer, but they were super greasy. The breakfast plates some of the other tables were eating looked great & I would love to try breakfast next time! The case of pies looked amazing so we ordered a coconut cream pie to take home (was MORE than enough for the three of us to share). Our server was nice enough to give us a double bag of ice to keep it cold for the next 1 1/2 hours we were on the road home. Been at this one b4 but didn't do a review I guess! Love this place ( well all of them). Today headed back to Tacoma and Black Bear was across the street. Our Bobtail truck fits nicely in the parking lot too. I had the chicken fried steak with poached eggs ( and perfect!) and fruit. Soooo good and hearty. The coffee is delish too. Nice n strong. Boy had the corned beef hash n eggs with pancake. Our server hit the ham button by mistake lol ( several times I hear) so he had to wait a piece for his correction. Per my entrance, 6 waitresses and a hostess and couple of other workers asked me where I want to sit. The waitress who was serving me was not very confident about the menu however she was very friendly. I love everything about this cute diner. Service is always great , friendly and attentive. Food is delicious. I had a blazing tri tip sandwich which came with tomato slices , cheese , bbq sauce and pickles. And the side of sweet potatoes which were so fresh and crisp. I tried their mama bear bbq sauce ( chipotle ) , the baby bear bbq sauce ( original bbq sauce) and the papa bear bbq sauce ( habinero) and each one of them were good tangy with a little kick. Portion is HUGE, I had to take half of the sandwich and most of the fries home. My boyfriend was happy with his chicken avocado club sandwich and fries. Hash Browns were burnt to a crisp, miniscule amount of turkey and bacon on the BLT - and the bacon was burnt to a crisp as well. I have eaten at many Black Bear restaurants and the food has always been excellent. Tonight's food was awful. The hashbrowns were served burnt and unable to eat. Omelet was tasteless with burnt onions and the biscuit was hard. The waitress was nice but should have never served the plate as it was very obvious burnt. read more

Always a hit with this NorCal chain. Always greeted warmly and seated promptly. Orders are taken and special requests granted. Our server was great, attentive, but not intrusive. Our drinks were refilled without ever seeing the bottom and our food arrived promptly, hot and as ordered. If I had a Black Bear closer to where I live I would go there more often, but as it it, I visit them when I travel and recommend them to others for excellent breakfasts and lunches. Way better than your other breakfast choices. Prepare to have a to go container. Their portions are large and usually provide me with a snack later that day. We used to like the Black Bear, unfortunately this chain has really gone downhill. My daughter bought for me a gift card so my wife and I figured we'd give it one more chance on our way back home to Northern California. For a relatively quiet Monday morning, the restaurant was quite messy. Food on the floors, bus carts in the middle of the room, even the tables were greasy and the place mats (paper) looked to have been used many times. The food was acceptable, although my wife's oatmeal and my breakfast came 10 minutes apart, they were both hot at least. The waitress only offered to refill my coffee cup once, while the booth next to us got plenty of attention. The wait staff seemed more interested in socializing with each other and sharing stuff on their phone. I remember a great dining experience years ago at the first restaurant in Mt. Shasta City, and I was a fan for years after that. Too bad perhaps the chain grew too big too fast. read more
