This was our first time visiting a Black Bear Dinner anywhere as we are visiting from Tennessee. Got into town late so decided to give it a try as it had mostly positive feedback. Glad we did. First off the placed looked great, clean with an hour to close. That shows good staff maintaining it. The service and servers we came in contact with were great, very friendly and talked to us about our trip as well as food options. I decided on doing a late breakfast with pancakes, bacon and eggs. All excellent. Wife enjoyed her pot roast as recommended too. The server hit every request I made on food and drinks and never missed a beat. That is hard to do so service is a 5 Star. I would go 4 1/2 if I could. But a well run and excellent group of servers. Food was very good. read more

Hands down this is one of the best black bear diners I've been to. I'm surprised it has such low ratings! I came here with my boyfriend & nephews yesterday, he ordered "The Grizz", which came with 2 pancakes, ham, sausage, eggs, bacon & a choice of hash browns or country potatoes (he got country potatoes), all for ~$13 which was a lot of food!!! He loved his dish! I didn't get a chance to try it because I was too busy working on mine. I ordered the California bacon Benedict & oh my goodness it is so delicious!!! It too also came with a lot of food! I even to-go half of my portion to finish for later. Hands down one of the best black bear diner. Only complaint I have is that our server wasn't the best or attentive. I asked him for a straw twice & never got it. Judging by near non existent lighting outside, I've always thought the business closed. Our meals were excellent and the staff attentive. Their tri tip sandwich and fresh salad was wonderful. Food is good but the service is really slow, I mean waiting 30 minutes on food, not sure if the cooks were on break. I ordered a cheeseburger and they had run out of buns. What place runs out of buns. We actually went back the next day and the service was worse, not many customers and worse service. I asked the waitress what was going on and she had said something to the cooks. So not sure if they're back there on their phones or just chatting. Again the food was very good. So when in Grants Pass you have some pretty great options, like the Taprock and The Station. But we chose to skip those and hit the comfort food king, Black Bear. They decorations are eye catching.. How many things can be made in the likeness of a bear? And the chainsaw carvings are great fun to imagine how they were made, real works of art. I LOVE the open face turkey sandwich. The only problem is they give you so much turkey you have to take a nap afterwords. For a quick stop with super large portions this is the place! you can almost just do a meal and appetizer for two and have plenty. read more

After planning a luncheon for 40-50 people, our venue cancelled 5 days prior to event. Trying to find another place I heard "no" after "no". Then I called Black Bear Diner and the manager, Zack, made it happen even though it was a peak dining time for them. Black bear is a very homy feeling restaurant serving comfort food at a pretty average price for todays standards. I enjoy coming here for breakfast but their lunch and dinner entres are pretty good too. I would definitely choose this restaurant over Denny's or iHop. The service is decent, the wait staff seems pretty stressed most of the time but that usually doesn't affect the service. read more

Nothing like traveling through the northwest and stopping at one of my favorites for a hearty breakfast to start the day. For some reason the Black Bear Diners up here are WAY better than we now have in SoCal. Today started with a delicious cup of coffee and the Shasta Scramble. Don't bother here. We just waited over an hour and 20 minutes for our food while people seated after us were eating to the right and left. Not clean, bathrooms awful and glass case holding desserts was covered in fingerprints, etc. I've eaten at several BBDiners and this was an extreme disappointment. We won't return. read more

I stopped in today for lunch, and my food was good and my server was sweet and curtious. My problem is, I was very uncomfortable with the behavior of the general manager, with a much younger looking waitress. As I ate, the two were behind the counter carrying on in a manner that I've never witnessed as a retired customer service worker. I did bring it to the waitresses attention. I am saddened by the state of this diner. It was a great place to bring family and friends through the years, and it has fallen into disrepair. The bear outside that I have taken pictures of my grandchildren with, has no face. It needs repair as well. I will no longer be dining here, sadly. read more

This place is as nice a diner as you'd expect in a small town. But don't be fooled by the hype! The server was absentee and the checkout person was the most rude individual I have experienced in a long time. The food was everything you'd expect from a highway diner but it doesn't live up to the hype. They advertise the most food you'll ever get for the price because of the large platers. The plater are indeed large but the amount of food is the same you'll find in most restaurants. The meatloaf was tasty but the fish and chips were right out of the box. Nothing you couldn't find on a supermarket shelf. There is a large desert menu but only a few items were actually available. The attitude of the staff was the most disappointing. The server seemed annoyed that we actually wanted to read the menu before ordering? Once the food was served we never got a check back for drinks. Again, the checkout person seemed annoyed she had to do her job. No how was your meal or was everything to your liking? Don't talk about tipping culture when you have staff like this serving guests. I will not return but if you decide to try this place, I hope you have a better experience. read more

The order took a really long time and the food wasn't good. My husband didn't even eat his food and they didn't even take it off our bill. When we mentioned it to the manager he didn't even address it and just proceeded with taking our payment. My husband said that we won't be back and the manager laughed and said yes you will. Solid 3.5 but I'll round it up. Typically very good, personable service followed up with above average food. The food isn't crazy air anything to write home about but you won't be disappointed appointed either. Nice litttle old school diner that is typically pretty quick to come into for a nice lunch. Plenty of parking and a lot of locals to run shoulders with. If you see the parking lot is full I would try going somewhere else just. Got there Saturday 4.30 pm. and less than 10 people in the house.They where out of prime rib, fish & chips, steaks, meat loaf but they still had pot roast. I got my salad after waiting 15 minutes and after two mite the pot roast is there. I finished my salad and of course by that time dinner was cold, took it home to re-heath it . Don't know what is going on at Black Bear they may need a new manager. If there is a next time I will order my salad and latter my entree and maybe even tip. read more

First off, WE LOVE BLACK BEAR DINERS! The one in Mt Shasta is fantastic BUT our experience at this one was awful! We've also eaten at a few others which were all super busy and managed perfectly. This was at 11:45 AM on a Saturday. The restaurant was about 70% capacity when we arrived but down to about 40% within 15 minutes of our arrival. Maybe we should have been weary when the hostess handed us menus that were printed on white stapled paper, like a high school term paper. Usually their menus are on newpaper. We had (we thought) opted to not wait an hour wait for the locally recommended breakfast joint because we had been out of town for a week and wanted to get home. We were 4 hours into our 8 hour drive and had a wonderful time touring the Farmers/Artisans Market downtown Grants Pass and decided to go with the quick service at Black Bear Diner. After over 10 minutes for our server to say "hello" and offer water and coffee and another 10 minutes for it to show up(I am not exaggerating) then another 35 minutes to get our food, the eggs were cold on my wife's and daughters dishes. The server took the eggs off the bill ($6.47) but we were starved and trying to make good time. The money didn't matter but our time did. To be fair, my son's and my food were hot, and a lot of it, but 2 out of 4 dishes were cold compounded by an unholy amount of time to get it with zero communication from our server. Our waiter was fast and friendly and my BLT lunch was excellent. I wish Black Bear had locations in the Atlanta area, we need places like this. After giving the two of us a big booth so that we'd be comfortable, our waiter got our drinks and took our order. At that point he told us they had a party of 30 so we could expect it to take time to get our food. OK, we talked about leaving but decided to wait it out. The burger and fries and tuna salad sandwich came 30 some minutes later both with cold soggy fries and a promise that fresh fries were coming. I ate the burger. It was barely hot and full of tough chewy "bits". I ate slowly and was down to my last few bites when a woman who appeared to be a manager came by and promised to get our fries asap. We could see her in the kitchen and then talking to a different employee. That woman got almost to our table with aplate of fries then turned and went back to the counter. Finally, with burger finished our waiter brought the fresh fries to our table 45 mins after we were seated. "Enjoy guys." I ate a few but a plate full of mediocre fries after a bland burger was not appealing. No one came to offer any adjustment to our bill. In fact, they all seemed to avoid us. This was our first visit to this BBD, but as veteran customers of this chain, this was not BBD customer service! Really poor customer care!! We waited over 35 minutes for our food. There were only about 10 people in the entire restaurant. Why did it take so long? I had the Tri-Tip and my boyfriend had a Cheeseburger and a side of Chili. My mashed potatoes were stone cold and the chili tasted like canned baked beans with hamburger and BBQ sauce added. After the waitress brought our food we never saw her again. Not to check if our food was ok or refill our drinks. After waiting for another 8 minutes for the bill, we finally just went to the register. The lack of care also show in the dirty and broken restroom. This place is a disgrace to the Black Bear chain. read more

Quick and friendly service. Within walking distance from our hotel. We were surprised but they had a big machine that makes freshly squeezed orange juice. Was so tasty. Okay, this wasn't exactly Medford, but we stopped here on our way. I wasn't super excited,cuz I'm not a chain girl. Black Bears are typically the same everywhere, but at least it wasn't Denny's. I had a patty melt. It was pretty greasy ( maybe it was juicy? not sure), but the rye bread and grilled onions were nice, and I liked my iced tea that came with it. I had ordered potato salad and it arrived with fries. The server brought me potato salad, too. I ate some of that, it had big black olives in it, not really delicious, and a couple fries, they were just fries, not especially good... stuck to patty melt, which was large and filling enough. It was quick stop. T, coworker and chauffeur to Medford, pined for their pies, but we skipped that and got back on the road. The pies did look good. Maybe next time I'd just get pie and skip the lunch part. Oh, their dessert menu has the calories on it. Did you know one of their Bear Claws ( which are enormous, BTW) has more than 2400 calories in it? I could have skipped knowing that. read more
