We have never had a bad experience with them but the last few times we have went there (like this last Monday) we waited 45 minutes after ordering breakfast and even noticed a person came in after us ate and left, we finally walked out. Will have went to this restraint for many years but we have made the decision to not return. At one point the waiter said "your food will be here soon, I promise" and 20 minutes later we finally walked after telling the hostess we had waited far to long and we would be making a complaint. We stopped here for some takeout while charging our Tesla. This Black Bear Diner has the superchargers installed in their parking lot. We visited a few days ago during Covid. This location is very convenient for people charging their cars and the parking lot felt safe. I ordered a Cobb salad and my husband the chicken fried steak. My salad was fresh and had a good ratio of lettuce, lots of bacon, cheese, etc. It was quite good. My husband's chicken fried steak was not so good., He said it was a bit mushy, as if it had been reheated and hot prepared right away, he thought it should have been crispy fried. We stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday. we were greeted by a very efficient and courteous waiter who informed us of an impending wait due to a large group of 40 being served. our food did take some time, but we were aware of the wait, so that was ok. I pulled into parking lot and there were only 6-7 cars. Sent my son in to place the order (11:30) and was told it would be about 20 minutes...he said ok-and paid for it. 25 minutes later, not done. 35 minutes later, still not done, finally at 50 minutes later it was done. Cold, burnt potatoes, hard, cold eggs, soggy biscuits, and bacon that wasn't really cooked. To add, I didn't get napkins, utensils, or my extra sauces....we spent over an hour and half just trying to get this cold burnt food! NEVER AGAIN BLACK BEAR! Excellent customer service. Food was good too. I have been to black bear diners in different locations but the grant pass employees were so nice and friendly. I most definitely recommend this place as a stop over location for breakfast lunch or dinner. We came for breakfast and I really appreciate the transparency of when I ordered the brisket with eggs, Rodney who provided excellent customer service came over to let me know their brisket wasnt quite ready but recommended the corn beef hash which I'm glad I ordered it. It was delicious! He even brought the kids their pancakes 1st so they can start eating which was nice. I am not sure if rodney is a manager but he definitely shows management material with how much he shows he cares about customer service and quick turn around with our orders. I could go on of how much I liked this place and overall experience was great! Thank you Rodney and staff :) I would give you more stars if I could. Service was BAD! The waitress cracked me up, she pulled the worst come on in history. She literally hung over (one arm behind his head and boobs in his face) my husband while taking his order and then 'forgot' I was right there across from him. I am not one to worry about such folks, but she was so brazen I actually laughed out loud and said, be nice to me I'm the one that tips. Her face turned bright red. Then she lopes off and forgot to take my order. My husband was stunned I was a laughing mess. So, about 2 minutes later (when I finally stopped laughing) She came back and she was P.O'd. She then asks for my order and our food came back pretty quickly. She actually separated every item I ordered separately (ie eggs,bacon and toast). My husband gave her the CC and I added a tip (I was seriously trying hard not to laugh again. When we were about to leave I asked my husband how much the bill was (I didn't check when I added the tip). He hands me our receipt and I see it's way more than it should be. But as we left I thanked her for her dinner theater and it was worth every cent. I still laugh when I think about it. But do beware if you don't want to have your partner completely embarrassed go to another Black Bear ( their food is always good, no matter where we find one) My only complaint is that my husband won't go to that one again. read more

We came here to use the supercharger and spotted this restaurant. I was charmed by the interior decor. The seat covers on the booths are unique and match the trim on the walls. The huge copper hood over the kitchen pass-through is stunning. Black Bear Diner is a pleasant, causal, restaurant. There are no tablecloths and the napkins are paper. The menus are entertaining featuring events from the past on the front of the newspaper-like menu. The service was somewhat slow considering the restaurant was not at all busy. The food was satisfactory and ample. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is very clean as were the bathrooms. Parking is in a private lot. As an EV owner, I was disturbed to read the review which indicated that the Diner owns the property on which the charging stations are situated yet the manager refused to call the police when the charge stations had been illegally and purposely blocked by an RV. Told our waitress- she was very kind and nice and said would remove my item from bill. NOT- she removed the up charge to make french out fruit filled. So 3.99 off the 50 dollar bill. Got there and young man said there was a 50 minute waiting, but I could sit at the bar (not a bar but a counter ). I figured that was fine. So, I ordered a patty melt with fries . I sat for 40 minutes before this simple hamburger arrived. There was no reason given nor an apology. The sandwich was ok, but made of inferior ground beef. Little taste and there were little bits of hard chunks in it like gristle or bone.i had the worst stomach ache in years later. I should have complained, but I'm not that fussy usually. Hmmmm. This is one of the less good Black Bear Diners I've ever tried. I've given them several chances over the last 3 years, but overall they are pretty much "meh". I would rate the food to be "quantity over quality" ... sure they serve big portions, but they are not cheap, you're paying for that big portion, and taste wise, I'd rate the taste a 4 out of 10. So yeah, its not that great. For the most part, they are slow in serving, and there is always something missing you need to ask for, and the entire experience does not seem very "clean", kinda like eating at a dive. I just purchased a small holiday turkey dinner to go, it consisted of extremely low quality thin sliced turkey, salty dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy that were OK, and maybe half a spoon of green beans. It was what they called their small holiday dinner because it did not include biscuit, salad, or dessert, it was priced at $23.99, according to their online menu, this dinner has a normal pricing of $17.49, apparently there is an up charge of $6.50 on the holiday! I probably could've gotten better quality turkey if I had gone over to the deli at Safeway. I have to say, this was definitely one of the worst holiday meal I've ever had from any establishment, the price was high, portions were small, and quality of food was poor. Over the years I have had opportunity to enjoy some extremely good holiday dinners from this establishment, but this year they really dropped the ball, I don't think I'll be spending my hard earned money at this establishment in the future. I appreciate the fact they were open for Christmas, but for the lack of quality food, and small portions that I received today, I think they would be doing everyone a favor if they stayed closed for Christmas next year. I've been to several black bear diners but this one is by far the best. This is the second time I've been to this one because I pass through this area about once every two to three years. The black bear in my area is terrible but this one is A+ + Our server Rodney was attentive gracious and polite! The food was exceptionally good; Fresh ingredients and perfectly prepared. I wish I had the opportunity to eat here every day. It was a joy and a delight in every possible way. Sorry there was a large party that came in and she was short staffed , on a busy Saturday. They should've been more prepared for the Saturday crowd. This is unacceptable. So they charged us $4.00. For my husbands coffee, We were surprised it was not comped, we were annoyed and pissed off from our trip to The Black Diner. i will make sure I tell my family and friends how poorly this restaurant was run and will not return to Black Bear Diner in the future. We came here both Saturday and Sunday on Father's Day weekend. it was not very busy on Saturday but Sunday was very busy. There was basically no wait on Saturday. On Sunday the wait was about 20 minutes and there were even people standing outside. We don't like to cook breakfast when camping. Our party of six had a mixture of breakfast and lunch items. Their whole menu is served all day so you are not forced to come during a certain time to get a certain menu item. They have fresh squeezed orange juice which is fantastic. All of the portions are huge even the "little less" portions. Overall the Black Bear Diner's all seem to be consistent. They're not like blow your socks off but it is decent comfort food. We did notice both times they seem to be short on silverware. On the first visit only a few of us had knives with our silverware. On the second visit the whole table only had forks. When we asked for knives on the second visit the server said "let me check if they're out of the dishwasher". It seemed a little odd considering the cost of silverware. Maybe somebody is stealing the silverware? Hope they know it's not real silver. Overall it was a good experience, the food was good, the service was more than adequate and the price was consistent with other diners in general. read more

I was here a few years back and quit coming due to the service, I tried this again last week after a long wait to be seated and a longer wait for the order I decided not to come here again, fast forward to this evening my friend wanted to come here, we got seated fairly fast however it was a wait for someone to take the order and longer for them to bring it, it was not busy, after a 20 plus minute wait she brought the food however my order was wrong, she took it back after another 15 minutes or so I got my order. Honestly, don't waste your money. There's so many other better American food/breakfast options in Grants Pass. The breakfast portions are good, but the food is bland & my eggs were soggy & kind of slimy. The biscuit was huge, but all I could taste was raw flour & the dough itself was terribly under-seasoned. The potatoes were also extremely bland & it didn't seem to matter how much salt I poured onto them, they continued to have a weird raw potato flavor. Their sandwich options are tasty, but they're something you could make at home for 1/3 of the price with some deli meat, bread & veggies. Nothing stands out. It's just okay, at best. So charging $16 for a chicken sandwich with a slice of cheese & a tiny side of coleslaw is just outrageous, to me. I could go a block down the road & get an awesome teriyaki chicken sandwich for $12 with 2 scoops of housemade mac salad. When you know that there are better & more affordable options, why go here? Worst BBD we've been to. We like to eat at BBDs when we travel. So far we've eaten in Medford, Vancouver, and McMinville. This one was awful. AWFUL. The food was not up to standard. The waitstaff was all either standing around talking or on their phones. Our waiter forgot the tea bag for my tea. It wasn't busy. The bathrooms were out of order, so we had to use what seemed like an employee bathroom, all the way in the back of the restaurant. It was disgusting. The whole place could use a thorough cleaning.
