I don't have an issue with businesses enforcing a "service animals only" policy. If that's the rule, I completely respect it. My issue is the inconsistency and how the situation was handled. On April 21, I was craving breakfast for dinner, so before heading to Black Bear Diner, I called and specifically asked if I could bring my dog. I even clarified that she is not a service dog. The employee told me that was perfectly fine as long as we sat on the patio. We came, enjoyed our meal on the patio, and even ordered something for our dog. Fast forward to today (July 3). I'm 5 months pregnant and was craving Black Bear Diner--pancakes, eggs, bacon... the whole breakfast spread. Since we'd had no issues before, we followed the exact same routine. My husband took our dog to the patio while I went inside to let the hostess know we were there. Less than two minutes later, we were told we had to leave because our dog wasn't a service animal. Again, I don't have a problem with that policy if that's truly the rule. What I do have a problem with is that it apparently wasn't the rule when we were there just 2 1/2 months ago--or at least that's what your staff told us after I specifically asked. When I explained that we'd been allowed before, the hostess immediately became defensive. First, she pointed to a sign on the window and said it had been there for over a year. Respectfully, that's exactly why I called ahead in April. Signs don't always reflect reality, so I asked a real person and even clarified my dog wasn't a service animal. Then the explanation became, "You were misinformed." Exactly. Your own employee gave us incorrect information. What was missing from the entire interaction was any acknowledgment or apology. A simple, "I'm so sorry you were given the wrong information last time," would have gone a long way. Instead, we were simply told to leave. Afterward, I sat in the car and cried. Maybe pregnancy hormones played a role, but I think anyone would be frustrated after trying so hard to do everything right. I checked the website, looked on Google Maps, called ahead the first time to confirm the policy, and based my expectations on an experience at the same restaurant just weeks earlier. We made the trip specifically because I was craving their food, only to be turned away without an ounce of empathy. This experience wasn't about the dog policy--it was about inconsistent communication, poor staff training, and a complete lack of customer care. We ordered the French toast, three link sausages, a spinach omelette, sourdough toast, and hashbrowns and honestly, every single dish was delicious. The French toast was soft, warm, and just the right amount of sweet Portions are huge, classic comfort-food style, and perfect for sharing. This restaurant has been around for a few months now. We were coming from our daughters gymnastics class nearby so we decided to stop by. We were able to be seated right away. We ordered our drinks; huckleberry lemonade, coffee and chocolate milk. We ordered an omelette kids pancakes and sides of bacon and another meal. We paid $91 dollars, but it was yummy. We didn't take any leftovers home which is a good sign... it means my two girls ate it up. The restaurant theme was obvious and spot on. We come during the lesser busy hours and I love getting the Joe's Hobo Omelette and my husband loves the Grizz for the generous portions. Our little loves coloring with the page they give us upon sitting down, while we wait for our food, I love their coffee and my husband enjoys their orange juice. Their staff is very kind and food doesn't take too long to come. The cabin cozy environment is very cute and my daughter loves seeing all the bears around the restaurant. This is our first time eating at Black Bear Diner. Upon entering we waited awhile before anyone seated us. It was 11:00am Tuesday. They weren't very busy. Once seated, it took our waitress quite awhile to come to the table. We asked another lady for coffee. Finally the waitress came by, she wasn't the friendliest. The food was good and big portions, we ordered from the less breakfast menu, and it was a lot of food. The bear claw was $7.99 but so delicious. We ordered drinks and everyone at the table got their drinks but me. I ordered an orange juice and they brought me a coffee. I asked again for my juice and the waitress could care less. My husband and I go there 2 times a week, maybe more. EVERY TIME there is an issue. The large bowl of chili is always luke warm/cold. I order steak and ask for med rare, its med well !!! I sent it back and it comes back rare !!!!. The waitress Kayla is awesome and always tries to fix it. When I tell the management, they dont show any concern. Your cooks are not good at thier job. We are in our 70's and on a budget, and will not pay this money with such horrible food. The service ie wonderful. But in such hard times you need to pride your self on good food. My wife, my two daughters, my son, and I got there around 7:20 a.m. We were seated pretty quickly, and our drinks came about ten minutes later. I was really hungry, so I ordered the Grizz. I asked if I could swap the sausage for a hot link, and they told me it would be an upcharge, which was fine with me. This is where things went downhill. It took close to 45 minutes for our food to come out. When mine finally arrived, there was no hot link--instead, they brought out spicy sausage patties. The eggs were cold, the ham and bacon were cold, and the pancakes tasted stale. Honestly, it was probably the worst breakfast I've ever had, and for a family of five it came out to about $90. They tried to take my meal off the bill to cover up the mistake, but I didn't let them. I'd rather they acknowledge the issue instead of pretending it didn't happen. I always see this restaurant when I'm driving the 215 and I wanted to try it with my family. I haven't eaten at a black bear diner in over 14 years when I was up north near Mt.Shasta. When we walked in I was very happy with the atmosphere and the decor of the place, it was very cozy and welcoming. The service was ok, the food did take awhile to get to us. The food itself was very delicious and the portion size was more than generous, I even had trouble finishing my meal which is not normal for me. My son also ate all of his breakfast which is not normal for him either so he really liked it. We discovered this place when we happened to be driving by the area. This place is kind of tucked away before the freeway. The inside aesthetic is pretty cool, loads of bears, hot sauce, and a menu that walks you thru the history of the diner. We were immediately taken care of and the waitress gave us a couple of recommendations including the huckleberry lemonade which was delicious. We also ordered one of the malted shakes which was also flavorful. We ordered fish and chips and the Ruben sandwich for lunch. The fish and chips were cooked perfectly, the Ruben was not bad but very very greasy. Today I took my family a party of 4 to this restaurant. I had never been there before and it was our first time. The restaurant looks very clean and busy. The food was good as well. My server name is Any and was excellent. She checked on us a few times and apologized for the delay on the food. I've been to many restaurants and the timeline for the food to arrive at the table after placing the order is between 12 to 14 minutes. It took over 36 minutes for our food to arrive. This is unacceptable. Other than that the restaurant is very clean as well as the restrooms. The atmosphere is pleasant and family oriented.
