Service was ridiculously slow for having only 4 tables in the restaurant full. Chicken fried steak is definently not made fresh there frozen patty just dropped in the Grier strait from the freezer. Ordered the season vegetables which was a nibblet of corn on the cob that had seen better days. Sides were not hot when dinner came out to begin with but after I waited 10 minutes for butter it was ice cold. Dairy Queen has better chicken tenders and the ranch had absolutely no taste to it. They spent some time and effort on the decor and it's charming. Took quite a while to get a table. There was just two of us and lots of Empty Tables. We just went to ignored for a while. When we finally got a table it hadn't been cleaned very well. The waitress shows up, flick some food off of the table and asked if we were set at a dirty table. I said yes we were but we were happy just finally get a table. She chuckled at that but didn't offer to clean our table and went ahead and took our drink orders. That's why four stars instead of five. The food was exceptional. With a cleaner table and better service this would be a five-star review. I got the mini volcano which is two giant sweet cream pancakes, one slice of bacon, one sausage link, and one scrambled egg. I also got a side of their hot Italian sausage. My wife got the bacon cheeseburger salad. We sampled each other's plates so I can tell you that every single thing that they brought us was perfect and delicious! The hamburger meat on her salad was incredibly good! I'm definitely getting a burger from them at some point. The salad looked so good that the table next to us saw it and asked about it. Ended up ordering the same thing and they were raving about how good it was. My pancakes stole the show on my plate. Did I say huge? Massive pancakes but cooked perfectly. The sweet cream made them sweet enough that I barely had to use syrup. I'm not usually a fan of scrambled eggs but I got them this time because I just didn't see over easy eggs going with pancakes. Terrific scrambled eggs. Thick cut Smokey bacon cooked just right, not floppy and not crunchy. Link sausage was great, especially dipped in their syrup. It's not a place I would stop in for lunch if I was in a hurry, but it's perfect for a laid- back meal. Also, they do serve alcoholic drinks if that's your thing. Well. Sadly. Black Bear Diner won't be a place that will stay opened for long. 2/3 times were terrible. Tonight we walked out it's 5:30 pm on Sunday NOT busy at all! We waited 10-15 to even be talked to for drinks and still no one came. I asked a server who's section we were sitting in. He found the server and she started yelling a cross the restaurant, I don't have time cause I have this large table over here. I looked at the "LARGE" table of 7! That means she only had two table ours of 4 and a around table of 7! We walked out and won't be going back. I'd say to stay away from this place. read more

The service was not great. We sat in a booth near the breakfast bar and could overhear all the servers complaining. My husband never received his toast and our server didn't check on us the entire time we were eating. When she did check on us , we already finished eating and she said "I just yelled at the kitchen about your toast." That isn't helpful for anyone when she wasn't aware of us at all during our stay. The breakfast was spot on, hash browns are a thick cut potato that was spot on, eggs cooked perfect, biscuits and gravy were really good(I'm picky on cream gravy and theirs was good) and the bacon was thick cut and cooked to a slight crisp(just how I like it). Servers made sure my coffee was full and they were very attentive(we were there at 630AM on a Friday, so they weren't busy). The menu is on what looks like a newspaper and the dinning area is very cozy. Great to find a new breakfast spot. Will be back for sure. read more

The cinnamon roll French toast and fish and chips arrived cold and seemed undercooked. any extra plates or utensils we requested took longer than needed to arrive. there were multiple times when we noticed our own waiter or other staff stopping to talk to fellow staff or coworkers. My dad when we asked one of our waitresses about the fish being undercooked. She asked us to put the fish on a separate plate to take back rather than taking the meal back as a whole when we complained to another staff member about this she just apologized and walked away. we talked to a third staff member about the issue and he asked if we would want anything else or if we wanted to take the fish off of our receipt which took another 20 minutes. I don't even write reviews for restaurants. i downloaded yelp specifically to complain about the service we experienced today. read more

I had high expectations for this new restaurant, hoping it would be a good alternative to Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrel has nothing to worry about. I've given them three tries now thinking things would improve over time. The food, while large in portion size, is sub-par in quality and employees seem more interested in socializing with each other than working. This last visit we ordered a burger and the mac and cheese for our granddaughter. The Mac and cheese looked like Kraft blue box with some cheese thrown on top. We first discovered black bear dinner when visiting in Colorado Springs . And we absolutely fell in love! Especially their bacon ranch with the side of fries !!! I asked for a Hot Chocolate and when I was drinking it, a piece of meat (or that's what I think it was) came out in my drink and I immediately spit it out into a napkin and I call the waitress and show her the piece of meat and it took her a minute or so to say something and I had to ask her to change my chocolate.The food was disgusting and burnt with no flavor. Experience: I was extremely excited to try Black Bear. As a bar manager in the industry I had heard great things about Black Bear and wanted to jump on the opportunity to visit when they came into the metroplex. We decided to wait a few months, as they seemed busy initially. We arrived 12:05 and were quoted a 30 minute wait at the host stand. It was 59 minutes later at 1:04 when we were alerted that our table was ready, however as someone in the industry I wasn't upset because from the lobby it seemed busy due to the amount of people waiting. I was surprised to see only a third of the restaurant was seated when I entered the building, this was 10-12 tables including the bar top. Again, not upset because maybe they were understaffed. We were greeted by the assistant manager at the host stand and walked to our table where we sat down around 1:06. We were greeted by a server around 1:30. It took us 24 minutes to get greeted at our table in a restaurant with at most 15 tables inside. I learned later they had four servers on and two managers. In this industry we all have bad days so I wasn't upset. I was a little peeved that I was at a tiny table next to the restroom. This was only because I'm particular about the size of the tables I sit at in empty restaurants, had the restaurant been packed then I'd be fine with whatever. We were greeted by a nice, yet shaken server around 1:30. I ordered water and coffee, also my food immediately since we decided during the 24 minute wait. We received our coffees around 15 minutes later at 1:45, I reminded the server about my water. We sat there without communication or "table touching" from any worker until 2:10 when another worker brought my friend their food. We spoke to 2 people between 1:06 and 2:10; and I still didn't have a water. After 42 minutes, I finally received my water at 2:12. My friend received their food at 2:10, my food was "allegedly" on the way. This was disappointing since I ordered 40 minutes before in a 1/3 filled restaurant. I stayed positive in hopes that it was coming when the minutes began passing. I received half my food at 2:20. This was an hour after I ordered, 74 minutes after sitting and 2.5 hours since entering the building into. Still only received half my food. I didn't even receive the entire entree. The best part is that the food was terribly cold and the gravy was a congealed mess. I nicely reminded my server that I was missing some items and began the wait for my food. Received the biscuits for my meal at 2:33, still no sausage. Food should've been remade but didn't want to wait. No drink refills. Friends food turned cold, he waited for me to get mine. No one ever inquired if our food was good or bad. We had 4 table visits in 2 hours. Environment: Everyone was nice. Servers we spoke to were upset that other servers didn't show up. Environment was nice. Hearing the manager yell, "Don't be a baby, I gave you five minutes", at who I assumed to be a cook was a interesting. As a manager in the industry I would have been upset too if my tickets times were over an hour in a diner-style restaurant. Eggs, bacon and fried foods do not take an hour to cook. Server pointed out to the assistant manager that I never received all my food. Manager stated, "Oh man, I was wondering who's food that was". Was apologetic, didn't offer any discount or compensatory void for my very late meal. I wouldn't have wanted him to comp my meal but he should've offered. The next manager I spoke to seemed completely overwhelmed. She stated she had 4 servers and herself to manage a full restaurant and a 19 top. However, like I said, the restaurant might have had a wait but was less than half full the entire time I was inside. 4 servers and 2 MOD's should've easily handled the business they had including the 19 top. I have tackled the same situation multiple times with less servers and managers. Its all about team work, training and organization. Who knows, maybe the kitchen killing tickets and ticket times is to blame for the staffs performance. Food: Chicken fried steak: Cold 8/10. Over-Medium Eggs: Over cooked, not runny 3/10. Hash browns: Cold, plastic tasting 5/10. Gravy: Congealed but once stirred decent 5/10. Biscuits: Giant but again cold so doughy in the middle 5/10. Hot sausage Patties: Never received, no one came to check what I was missing 0/10. Overall: Staff was nice but disorganized and dysfunctional. Restaurant was a third full and management could not organize to tackle the situation. Food should never take an hour to come out in a diner, tables should never wait on drinks for an hour. If you're going to give out late food, make sure it's the full ticket. This location will not survive in Mesquite if the experience provided to others is similar to the one I received. Let me start by saying if I could leave ZERO stars I would!! My husband and I took our 3 grown children and two young grandchildren here for Thanksgiving yesterday. The wait was not terrible-about 30 minutes even though there were plenty of large tables sitting empty. Got seated and the waitress took our drink order. Drinks arrived quickly and she took our order. We waited over 30 -45 minutes for our food. When it came out we still had not received our soups that were the appetizer with the Thanksgiving meals they were serving. One daughter ordered turkey and got ham. One daughter had a large hair in her turkey mixed in with the gravy and we were all missing our corn bread. We asked for a manager to show him the hair in the food and he came to the table. Acted like we bothered him and had a terrible attitude. Threw his hands up in the air like what do you want me to do about it-my husband asked him to remake her plate. He grabbed the plate without saying a word and walked off. Never saw him again after that. By this time we all also needed refills. About 10 minutes later my youngest daughter got her turkey however my older daughter that found the hair in her food still had not received her remake plate. Waited another 20 minutes and here came to soup-cream of potato with bacon. Two bowls were hot and two bowls were cold-ALL were lumpy soup with a weird texture to it. I have never had soup like that and we refused to eat it. We asked to get a salad in place of the soup and only received one small plate of salad instead of 4 for everyone that had gotten soup. When everyone was already done with their plate my oldest daughter finally received her remake. We had to finally ask for our corn bread and it was dry and just crumbled into a million pieces. Had to ask for refills. Never got any napkins. Let me make a note that it was NOT busy therefore I cant say that was the reason for the horrible service. Finally we got the bill and went to pay. For $24 a plate that they were charging for Thanksgiving the service should have been at least decent however it was NOT. The food was hit or miss. Either it was hot and delicious or cold and tastes bad. No one should ever have to eat their meal without a drink as your glass sits empty on the table. No one should also have to eat without having napkins. Every time I looked for the waitress she was no where to be found as was all the other wait staff. It was as if they were all hanging out in the kitchen. I have dined many times at the Houston Texas locations and NEVER had an issue. I honestly feel it all starts with management. If you have a bad manager with a bad attitude and zero customer service your waitstaff reflects it. This location will do down fast if this continues. I really wish I would have gone to Cracker Barrell instead but I have learned my lesson for the future. DO NOT GO HERE ON HOLIDAYS!!!! read more
