We went to Black Bear Diner a few days ago and really enjoyed it. The staff was very friendly and the service was great. I loved my BLT on sourdough it was a treat to get it on sourdough. My family has been going to Black Bear Diner for years when we visit family in California and have been hoping we would one day get a location in the area. We were so excited when we found out it was happening. Our first visit to this location went great. We visited after church and it was busy as expected. We were told a 45 minute wait and only waited 20 minutes. After we were seated we were greeted by our waitress and our order was taken promptly. On October 9th my birthday we went there for breakfast and the experience was not good at all. To begin with the server brought out three different plates and neither were mine, she'd brought out my husband's and got his right on the first try (I wish I could remember her name.)We needed refills and napkins and she never came back around. I do have to give props to all the other servers they came by and without hesitation brought us what we needed. We'd been wanting to go there but because of our work schedules we'd not had the time and it was a big deception on the day of my birthday. Our first visit was not an impressionable one. Wife ordered chicken fried steak and I the prime rib. Wife said chicken fried steak was ok, but my prime rib was not good. The prime rib was cold around the edges and I had it sent back. I was afraid to get the same piece of meat over cooked. When they returned it was a different piece and they asked me to try it to see if it was satisfactory. I did and accepted it even though the new piece wasn't much warmer than the first. Didn't care for the taste either. I ate the prime rib anyway because I didn't want to go to a different restaurant. Granted this was only one item out of many they serve but nothing impressed me about this place. I would also like to note a group a few tables away from us complained about their food as well. Then when the server brought out the check, they tried to charge for two prime rib. They did fix the check when I brought it to their attention but I overlooked it at first. It was my wife who noticed it after she looked it over believing it was too much. Attitude amongst the staff was mixed some friendlier than others. The atmosphere is very bland. Verdict is not out yet, but not in a hurry to give them a second chance. read more

This has a very Country feel to it and it is pleasantly different from other diners. It almost feels like it would, if Buccee's had a diner in it's big store, set apart from the crowd. The service could have been better. Too many waiters came around asking if we needed anything and among all 3 of them, we didn't get water, plain cream or extra butter. The corn beef was tough. My eggs were not as hot as I would have liked them to be, and I asked for NO powdered sugar on my pancake. Of course, you guessed it. Powdered sugar was served on my pancake. (They serve 2 BIG pancakes that are delicious, but I only ordered one, knowing I could not finish two.) The 3 large sausage links were delicious! if they can organize their waiters and be deliberate on making sure cream, butter and water are present on the tables, that would enhance the dining experience. The food came out quickly. That's a plus! When I asked for butter, cream and no powder sugar, our guy, Josh, was very friendly, upbeat and always answered, "I gotcha!" However, we had to hail down other waiters to deliver the goods. I will be back as there are few "diners" in Mesquite, (or anywhere). It's a neat place to go and the noise level is conducive to actually being able to visit! Other than those little things, I would have given Black Bear a 5 star. read more

Absolutely terrible service. Arrived at 9am and our table of 14 was seated at approximately 9:30am, which was reasonable. However, we waited 1.5 hours for our food!!! Food was excellent. The stuffed black berry French Toast was worth the wait. Freshly squeezed orange juice was good and the sweet cream waffle was delicious. Service was a 2 out of 5 though. Kitchen was 40 minutes behind and it took 20 minutes to get our drinks . The food saved our overall dining experience. read more

Went here for lunch with a friend. We only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated - for the lunch crowd that wasn't too bad. The hostess was very nice and gave us the menus and left. We waited a bit longer than expected to be greeted by our waitress. We ordered our drinks and they were served pretty quickly. She then left without even asking if we were ready to order (which we were). When she finally came back, we placed our order. I ordered the turkey and dressing, along with two sides. My friend ordered the taco salad. A few minutes later the waitress came back and said they don't have the turkey until Thanksgiving...first, why have it on the menu if it isn't available and second, why didn't the waitress know they did not have turkey until Thanksgiving. While I know turkey is expensive right now, it should have been marked off the menu or at least the waitress should have known...indications of poor management. I ended up with the taco salad which was huge (full of lettuce), but ho-hum. I had to request a refill of water and it took a while to get the refill. Also, this is a fairly new restaurant and only one toilet in the ladies restroom was working. I'm hoping that whatever was wrong just occurred. Personally, I doubt I will be back for a while. Food was mediocre and service while okay was not outstanding. read more

The service is bad. Had to give a one star because I couldn't give a zero stars. It was my first time going there and I'll never go again. The waitress took over 15 minutes to take our drink order when there was only two other tables she tended too. Not sure if she was new or not so we gave her the benefit of the doubt but once we received our 3 drinks she had forgot our water (which we had reminded her twice about) and she also forgot straws and napkins which we also kindly reminded her about as well. Then she said she was going to make her rounds and be right back to take our order. almost an hour had gone by before we had to call her to come back to our table and finally take our order. While taking our order she kept getting confused on their own menu items and asked if what we had ordered was even on the menu. After placing the order she came back around 2-3 times to make sure she got our order and sides right. We were so unhappy with our first experience at this diner that we decided to leave and close our tab before she could even send our order to the kitchen. Never going here again! read more

My wife and I have enjoyed several meals at black bear, and they were great. But. I ordered corned beef hash and it was more like corned beef jerky. My daughter had a similar experience with a Reuben sandwich. Corned beef should be served pink and moist. Cook needs some training on this. read more

So disappointed in this place. Drove from Richardson to Mesquite to try the stuffed blackberry French toast, only to be told they were out. We asked for the cinnamon roll French toast instead and we're told they never have it. Server had not suggestions in lace of that. It's a new place in Mesquite, finally... something out of the ordinary. We spotted the restaurant yesterday and googled the menu. It looked worthy of a try. We expected it to be busy and were understanding about wait times. Waiting approximately 40 minutes to be seated which we agreed to and did so. After being called for our seat, the hostess then took us to a table where we had to stand and wait for the lady to finish sweeping out from under the table.. I can appreciate the need for cleanliness but having us stand out in the middle of the restaurant while she did the cleaning was not the best start. After seating, our waitress came and took our drink order. She was there. I'm not saying she was unpleasant but certainly didn't make any effort to make us feel welcomed.. I shrugged it off as for I am pretty sure she has been overwhelmed with guests all morning. She then took our order. Not writing any of it down, I was worried. After 50 minutes, she finally surfaces and tells us somehow our order got pushed to the end and we were still going to have to wait. Again, trying to be understanding of the newness and still working out the kinks..... but almost an hour of waiting with a 5 year old... becomes trying. Finally, the hour has past and our food arrives.. but wait, not mine. Just my husband's order and my grandson and then acts though she is coming right back with mine. She did not. After about 5 mins she comes back to tell me that the cook didn't prepare it right and the manager is having the cook remake the order. Another 20 minutes passes and I had to go find her to tell her to just cancel the order and bring my check.. My husband and grandchild had finished their meals and at this point I no longer wanted anything they had to offer. I was irritated beyond measure. She did take the item off of our check. Well, wasn't that nice of her? I don't recommend you go here if you are looking for decent service. The greeting is poor, the wait staff is poor, the entire experience was awful and I couldn't even tell you that the food is worth it.... I never tasted the food and now, I never will. Staff was very professional like and very friendly I had breakfast at the bar it was really busy yet the staff I observed worker so well together as a team. My food was very delicious and hot and did not have to wait long even with the full capacity & the second week it has been opened, each worker did so well and hands off to their manager, which I asked his name: Dalton. OMG! We went with a coupon for breakfast but didn't use it. Ordered Big Bear portion of CFS with 3 eggs 2 huge biscuits and hash brown, the wife ordered Eggs Benedict with hash brown. It was all great. It was so good we went back two days later for lunch. Big Bear portion of CFS with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob, the wife had the fish and chips. It was very good but not as mind blowinfly awesome as breakfast had been. Still it was huge portions that were really good. The staff was friendly and welcoming. They did forget a side of bacon at breakfast but I was so stuffed it didn't detract from the overall, warm glowing feeling of contentment. I would recommend the Big Bear portion only if you are ravenously hungry or a glutton for that belt loosening, I'm stuffed feeling. I saw the epic Bearclaw but it is so big I was scarEd off on this trip. Definitely our new favorite breakfast diner. read more
