Sadly we moved away from Black Bear Diner in Phoenix 5 years ago. It was one of our favorite places. We were thrilled to learn one had opened up near us here in Plano. According to our server, they've been open only a couple months. It was as if we'd never left. Same comfort food we remember. I got the Grizz breakfast. My wife got the crispy chicken bacon ranch wrap. Solid quality and the usual huge portions. Their prices are a good deal higher than we remember. But that's all restaurants lately. I wish I remembered our servers name. But he was attentive and pleasant. Unfortunately, they're experiencing some growing pains. We waited over an hour for our food. They weren't expecting a crowd the day after Christmas. As we left, we noticed a note on the front door informing customers of being very short staffed that evening. That note would have been a nice touch wen we got there. Although it's unlikely we'd have changed our minds. Never been here and decided to tryit out. Right off the bat we stood at the host stand while several employees walked past us for a long time. When we were finally seated we waited for a long time to get our drinks. We got our coffee but nothing to stir it with we didn't even have silverware so we asked for some but the waitress decided to catch up with another worker while we waited for our silverware. The food was not good. Hash browns were burnt and hard, pancakes were terrible, the ham felt like a piece of leather. The only thing I liked was the eggs. The outside looks really nice. Walking through the doors you're instantly greeted with a smile and a server comes up to you. Everyone was so friendly. The food came out hot and very fresh. First the server didn't know what came with what I ordered. Second the ac was blasting cold like the north pole and leaking had to move. Then when the food came it dint taste good I could have got a frozen food meal and cooked at home and tasted better than what they serve. Went here for breakfast to the restaurant and upon entering was immediately greeted from friendly staff. We were seated promptly by a manager and asked for our drink order. We waited and waited and then a super nice waitress came to our table and asked what we wanted to drink. We advised her that we had already placed our drink order with another person, but restated our drink order again. She apologized and seemed frazzled and stated that they had her working all over the place. She went to check on our drinks and we were immediately served. The coffee was super strong, even after I added 3 creams. This is the kind of coffee that puts hair on your chest. The fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious but not chilled. The food was just ok. Well I don't post reviews often. But we ordered take out from Black Bear last night. Ordered post roast and cobb salad. Get there and the worker says, 'we don't have pot roast'. Okay, ordered meat loaf. While processing this change order, they 'found' the pot roast. So where was it? It led me to believe that they do not prepare the meals from scratch. Ordered a side salad, "we don't have any salad'. But, they prepared a cobb salad... WT. So the side salad was replaced with green beans. Got home with the meals, the cobb salad had very little greens, the chopped up breaded chicken was very dry and tasted old. The post roast's texture felt like little plastic pieces of meat. It was dry also, not fresh at all. We did not receive any bread/rolls with the meals. We have been to this place in the past, and it was fine, but this time the food was not good, tasted stale as if it were cooked at lunch and left in storage. Our order was at 6:30 on a Sunday evening. I will not be eating at this establishment in the future. read more

I visited this diner for the 1st and last time Saturday, 8/3 in Mesquite table#81/1. I am not adverse to waiting on my food because I used to be in the industry and understand being double-sat working doubles etc. However, what is unacceptable is accidentally giving person A what person B ordered; taking it back to the kitchen and bring that same meal out to person B later after person A touched it. I saw it with my own eyes + the glasses that I wear and the waitress confirmed matter of factly as if it happens all the time that that is exactly what happened. I'm sure that violates EVERY health code there is. Person A -my sister and I'm person B. I ordered stuffed blueberry french toast that was extremely cold, hard to cut, and chew, with eggs and ham (that was smaller than my palm). It was 5 of us and the only person that enjoyed their food was my other sister that got a sandwich. However, I paid and tipped the waitress and didn't eat anything. By this time I was too afraid of what the kitchen would do to my food. Just thought someone in corp should know how your Brand is being represented. read more

NO other patrons there on a late afternoon, so thought it would be a good choice. Had to wait 10 minutes for a host to seat us, then about 30 minutes for a poorly made scrambled egg. Was told that the cook was new and didn't know how to make it! What? Looked nice, but tasted awful. Bland coffee. Friendly waiter, but inattentive. Seemed everyone in the place thought this was an excellent time to take their afternoon break. Doubt that we would give it a second chance, even though we live close. read more

They spent some time and effort on the decor and it's charming. Took quite a while to get a table. There was just two of us and lots of Empty Tables. We just went to ignored for a while. When we finally got a table it hadn't been cleaned very well. The waitress shows up, flick some food off of the table and asked if we were set at a dirty table. I said yes we were but we were happy just finally get a table. She chuckled at that but didn't offer to clean our table and went ahead and took our drink orders. That's why four stars instead of five. The food was exceptional. With a cleaner table and better service this would be a five-star review. I got the mini volcano which is two giant sweet cream pancakes, one slice of bacon, one sausage link, and one scrambled egg. I also got a side of their hot Italian sausage. My wife got the bacon cheeseburger salad. We sampled each other's plates so I can tell you that every single thing that they brought us was perfect and delicious! The hamburger meat on her salad was incredibly good! I'm definitely getting a burger from them at some point. The salad looked so good that the table next to us saw it and asked about it. Ended up ordering the same thing and they were raving about how good it was. My pancakes stole the show on my plate. Did I say huge? Massive pancakes but cooked perfectly. The sweet cream made them sweet enough that I barely had to use syrup. I'm not usually a fan of scrambled eggs but I got them this time because I just didn't see over easy eggs going with pancakes. Terrific scrambled eggs. Thick cut Smokey bacon cooked just right, not floppy and not crunchy. Link sausage was great, especially dipped in their syrup. It's not a place I would stop in for lunch if I was in a hurry, but it's perfect for a laid- back meal. Also, they do serve alcoholic drinks if that's your thing. First time I went for lunch. They did not have the roasted turkey. So, I ordered a salad. Tuna was good but the lettuce seemed less than fresh. Decided to give it another try and try breakfast. Server was pleasant. They didn't have the chicken sausage. Omelette was good, hash browns too crunchy and hard to chew. Biggest problem was the atmosphere was very loud.
