I woke up this morning with an apocalyptic hangover. The only thing that could cure it would be a mess of biscuits and gravy. (If only that's what I had gotten) My darling fiance loves black bear diner and placed an order for me. What I received however, looked like a loaf of bread that was baked wrong, then cut in half with a few teaspoons of gravy (WITHOUT sausage??) This is an abomination! And it was freezing cold and soggy?? I took two bites (or tried to) because I feel miserable and am starving and still couldn't choke it down. My theory is that a customer ordered this in the restaurant, looked at it and sent it back, then the staff put it in the back and forgot about it until my order came in, and then sent me this culinary reject. My fiance gave it his best effort to eat it and just couldn't finish. With a mouth full of soggy cold yuck he said "this is literally JUST bread." The amount of gravy would be laughable if I wasn't so cranky and hungry and hungover. This was no laughing matter. Good thing my fiance shared half his food with me. Our food was cold when it finally came and my pancakes were harder than any I have ever ordered. I get they are under staffed but the food was the worst part of the experience. Food is on par with Denny's/Ihop but cost a little extra. service was great, and I will say that the quality of Bacon is actually a little better than standard breakfast places. In my opinion, why support a chain restaurant like this when you can go to Joe's cafe down the street and have an authentic locally owned meal with southern roots. read more

I enjoyed the Black Bear diner. It was not over the top amazing but it was good food at a good price with big portions. I had a turkey burger that was pretty good. The French fries came out hot but they were nothing special. They also had some good cornbread muffins. It also came out hot and fresh. The service was pretty good and the setup is done in a way that you pay at the front. I like that because they just left the check and said we could leave whenever. That way we didn't need to hound the waiter for the Bill. Overall it is good, but not out of this world great. I will be back to try their breakfast food. read more

The Babe™ and I went here for Lunch. It's classic diner food with a corporate twist on quality. The service was good, the food was very tasty but not magical (It's Diner food). For a more traditional Diner experience, one should try Callie's...but the food was good. Portion sizes were on the large side... I had a cup of soup and a tri-tip french dip sandwich. The fries were thin but perfectly cooked. The french dip sandwich was very good, especially with the onions & mushrooms. My wife had eggs benedict with a spinach sauce, which she enjoyed. The sum of our experience was that the food was good, the corporate diner experience means that there will be a high level of consistent quality but not a lot of magic. It was a good but not a fantastically great dining experience. We didn't have room for dessert, but the bread pudding did look very tempting. read more

Food tastes amazing and the portions are wonderful, but the service sucked last time I went. I wish I had a different waitress. First of all, my fiancé asked for seasoned fries with his meal and instead got Cheese fries. Second, he asked for lemonade and got water with a few drops of lemon. This was our first time at black bear diner. My kids were excited about getting breakfast for dinner. My 7 year old ordered the mini grizz and loved it. My 4 year old got the chocolate chip pancakes and thought they were pretty good. I ordered the California bacon eggs Benedict. They were pretty terrible. They were flavorless despite being drenched in hollandaise sauce. Really the only flavor they had was of an old grill. Terrible really. The fruit bowl that came with it was 90% crunchy honeydew with mushy grapes. I was really disappointed overall. Worse than my bland meal though was the service. Our server spent most of the evening talking at the bar. We never got refills for our water. They messed up my daughters order and it took over 20 min to get one over easy egg from the kitchen. I really can't recommend going here based on the service alone. read more

The good servers are amazing! Really made me feel welcome and have my food there with a smile and a good service. The bad ones... really bad... These people should not be in customer service jobs. I thought the service was good, and my meal was placed in front of me promptly. My waitress was very kind and checked in often. The coffee stayed filled but my water cup was never refilled so I was quite thirsty for the majority of my meal. I had breakfast and of course I ordered quite a lot. I had the corned beef hash with the biscuit and I added a pancake. The biscuit was a good size for a large breakfast for a large meal for a large man. The pancake was disappointing to say the least. I wasn't worried about the size although it was quite small, and the butter or margarine (whatever it was) seemed overly sweetened and was not a good taste. The syrup might as well have come straight out of aisle four at Walmart with a 6 for 1$ sign on it. It reminded me of the awful fake crap I would be served at a motels' "continental breakfast". For the amount of food I ordered and for the quality the cost wasn't awful. It could've been toned down about 4-10%. Overall a good experience and if I wanted a breakfast with a friend or family member after spending the night in a nearby hotel, this would be the place I'd go to. Black Bear Diner is without question my favorite "breakfast all day" kind of diner. They have a wife variety of of tasty dishes. However, I don't have to look far through the menu as I get The Grizz every time I go. It has 2 fluffy, buttermilk pancakes, sprinkled with powder sugar. Delicious sausage links and bacon, a ham steak (which I generally swap out for extra bacon and they always do it for me no problem). Then of course your eggs and potato choice. I go with the hash browns. The staff is always friendly and I have never visited and left disappointed in the service or the food I received. I highly recommend black bear diner. read more

The server was rude and dismissive. A short young looking guy with brown hair and glasses. When we asked for a to go drink he said he didn't know if they did that and walked away. I don't really get the appeal of Black Bear Diner. It seems like it wants to be a cute little family owned diner but it's sort of too big and too prepackaged to be that. It's got the bad parts of both; the unremarkable food and prepackaged "rustic charm" of a chain with the long lines and the unorganized, slow service of a much smaller place. If you go in on a weekend, be prepared to wait for at least 45 minutes, when I went on a Sunday, we were told it was a 15-20 minute wait then we sat there for over an hour. Most recently I went on a Wednesday at noon and still had to wait for 15 minutes. This is crazy to me. If this really was a small family diner, I would understand but it's actually HUGE inside. The food is so/so. People rave about it but I really don't understand why. It's fine. the biscuits are good but the gravy is not. The cinnamon roll pancakes are what I hear the most about, but to me, they're just too sweet, and cinnamon and maple are too really heavy flavors so I don't think they go great together. Everything else is basically just diner food, it's not BAD but it's nothing to write home about either. The thing I really take exception to is the up-charges. I got fruit on my pancakes and got up charged $2.50 for it! That's ridiculously expensive. And I wasn't asked about it. Then changing from bacon (which comes with the meal) to oatmeal it was another $1.99 up-charge. FOR OATMEAL. I'm not telling people not to go there, but I'm certainly not recommending it either. read more

Of the half dozen times I've been to the Orem location there has not been one time where things went smoothly and I thought, "That was a great experience and an excellent decision on my part." Things to consider before deciding to go to Black Bear Diner: - Do you have 60 - 90 mins of free time? - Do you like walking around to find a server? - Do you enjoy asking for something more than 3 times? - Are you OK with standing in line for 20 min while the two people in front of you pay? If you answered 'no' to any of these questions, then you should probably look elsewhere for sustenance. Black Bear Diner is not for you. If you answered 'yes' to ALL of these questions, you should probably look into buying a Black Bear Diner franchise so you can be surrounded by all your sick fantasies on a consistent basis. I love going to Black Bear Diner anywhere but the one here in Orem, Utah County, Utah. My sister and I came in during the lunch rush. We were seated in less than 5 minutes. We say at our table for almost 10 minutes before someone came over and said she'd be right back. While waiting for our server to come back, another couple came and were seated at the table across from us. They were served right away with silverware and water, we had nothing at our table. While still waiting for the server to come back she came and went the other couple and asked their order, we were shocked and decided to get up and leave.
