Second helping of Friday's All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry!
    John P.

Four of us met at the Black Bear Diner (Sandy location) on Friday to try the "all-you-can-eat" fish fry! What a delightful treat! You start with three large pieces of delicate fish in a crispy bread coating, not greasy at all. They came with a generous pile of french fries, tartar sauce and fry sauce, and freshly made coleslaw. What's not to love! Additional servings (second and third helpings in our case) were offered cheerfully. We had an attentive waitress who quickly catered to all our requests. Delicious helpings of peppermint chocolate cream pie and blackberry cobbler completed an outstanding meal. I give the Black Bear Diner another five star review because they never fail to deliver a great experience.

Take out omelette with crispy bacon. & hash browns. This was AMAZING!

Even my take-out was AMAZING! My omelette was moist, and my bacon was crispy, just like I asked for. Thanks you!!

This restaurant tries so hard and has great, attentive staff. We love coming for breakfast. They have great kid meals and generous portions, great with coffee refills, and friendly service. They remember details like condiments, kid cups, plenty of napkins and aren't bothered when you have kiddos with you. Lots of parking. There was one night we came with a large party and even though they served us well, we could tell there was some drama with short staff and one staff person seemed to bad-mouth the restaurant and then walk out (maybe was fired?) It was confusing but they still gave us a good dinner even if it took awhile. There are weekend specials and we tried the pot roast and all-you-can-eat fish fry (which is just frozen patties, just keep in mind so you're not surprised, haha) but they are good and sometimes you just want comfort dining food. Got some pie and ice cream for dessert and that was a win. We might not return for dinner but love their breakfasts and hope to see them up and running with full staff again soon.

I've had breakfast here almost every morning during my trip and lunch here once. The food is delicious and the portions are large. Even the ones marked as "little less" are still quite large. My spouse and I started ordering just one breakfast to share and it's plenty of food. Thier biscuits are the largest I've ever seen! I'd recommend the steak and eggs, the chicken fried steak and eggs, and of the sausage or bacon and eggs, or the bear's choice with pancakes. My spouse tells me the chicken and waffles was good too. Don't get grits, they are the one thing to avoid as they are watery. Join the club that there's a QR code for at thr tabke and they'll email you a code for a free breakfast. (The email takes a while to arrive so plan to use that on a second visit.) The service is friendly and efficient. It's a chain of restaurants and I hope to visit somr of thr others.

Awesome food and Gracen was awesome! Such a nice server. Good coffee too. So here is what was left of the meat lovers omelette.

It's Black Bear. Some things are better than others. We have one very close so go frequently for breakfast. We enjoy their breakfasts far more than the other meals. But we're southern so maybe their take on lunch and dinner is just different than we're used to. The portion sizes and decadent calories are available of course but they also have decent healthy options with calories right on the menu.

I had a good overall experience and would go back! The breakfast was delicious. I ordered the two egg combo with the corned beef hash which wasn't greasy at all like it can be. I do not recommend the iced cold brew. It had a very bitter taste. The orange juice is really delicious! It is freshly squeezed. The chorizo breakfast burrito was also very good!

I was craving comfort food and had visited another Black Bear Diner recently that was very good. So I thought this would be a safe bet. Not so. Service was less than stellar-our server was uninterested and mostly absent and the food was just mediocre. We were there on a Friday around 4:30, not prime time. But we felt like the staff were more annoyed at our visit than happy to have us. My pot roast had an odd flavor. I couldn't figure it out, but it was definitely different than I had experienced at another location. It came with a microwaved corn bread muffin. Odd pairing. My wife's French fries were cold. I think I'll stick with South Jordan next time.

Not impressed. Food was subpar and the blackberry shake tasted like nothing and had big clumps of honey in it. Weird.

The Alfredo chicken was a beautiful balance of cheese, chicken, and a surprisingly pleasant hint of mushrooms. I am not a fan of mushrooms but it was not overpowered and complimented the flavor profile of the crepe. They were filling and the waitress was able to get us a box. "Don't worry honey, it's okay to look, and also throw money at the half-naked women! I promise you won't get in trouble!" Uh-huh. ;) Alright, I digress. Awkwardness aside, Prohibition is a really great place to enjoy a classy dinner, where the meat is served on a place AND on stage, and the cheesecake comes with the price of admission! Speaking of admission, as my wife and I were guests, being shepherded along by our friend, I cannot recall exactly what the "cover charge" was (not much, if I remember correctly...less than $20 for two?), and if reservations are *required*, I cannot say for certain, but I would say they are *recommended* at the very least, because our showtime was packed. Anyway, once paid, you are escorted through a secret bookcase door (SLC residents sure do love their speakeasies, don't they?), and into the dining hall and saloon, where you're soon to have your socks knocked off...well, someone's clothes are coming off, anyway! We were given a table that I dismissively thought was tucked away pretty far in the back and out of the way, but it ended up being one of the best seats in the house, as the table where the performers gathered, prepped, and returned to was just adjacent to us, so we were about as up close and personal as you can get, without getting yourselves arrested. Each of the dancers brought their own style, flair, and wardrobe to their performances, which were spirited and energetic, and a touch racy, without devolving into outright debauchery. It may be an (18+? 21+?) venue, but alcohol restrictions aside, I wouldn't hesitate to take older, more mature teens to a show with similar content. We ordered a smattering of smaller dishes, as we weren't particularly hungry, but the Mishima Wagyu tacos were fantastic (as you would expect), as was the Fedora Fin (Za'atar-crusted ahi tuna), and all of our cocktails. As the show is timed event with multiple performances per night, both food and bev are fired out of the kitchen/bar faster than the bullets from a Tommy Gun, but with far better accuracy. The whole operation here was honestly very impressive, from start to finish. Coming from a progressive city like Portland, it's always struck me a little odd that places that, by reputation, strike you as more conservative end up having some of the best, most wild entertainment venues, that you only wish you had back home. Prohibition is one of these places that I would rather see in my downtown, instead of the litany of seedy strip joints pushing for maximum titilation, but with only a fraction of the class and sophistication. Prohibition is good, clean fun, masquerading as something illicit, which is the heart of what makes it work so well.
