First off, didn't know Black Bear Diner originated up in Mt. Shasta...secondly, great breakfast. Heading back to Los Angeles, and staging for my next load out to Kentucky / Ft Wayne Indiana. Craved some solid American Breakfast and this joint delivered. You meet some interesting folk in places like this. Italian guy sitting next to me was from Staten Island, served in the Marine Corps, lived all over Europe. Was somewhat of a former Chief down in Bronx Precinct and just has all these stories about Trump, family members with super bowl rings, and decided to operate Semi-Trucks in his retirement. That awesome baby boomer American dream--- lawyers in the family, doctors in the family, kids doing really good..... Back to reality, not for millennials, nope. We ain't got any pensions. And with all that's going on in San Jose, any moment now, the engineers up in XAI and Tesla will probably replace my a** with Tesla Semis and AI agents......... so ya....enjoy good food before corporate America liquidates its labor force for ChatGPT...and then no more dining out! And now back to the present: Having ordered "The Grizz, fresh squeezed orange juice and a coffee" I am now content on continuing my trip back to LA. Great stop in between Phoenix and Indio CA. We have eaten here multiple times and have had great service and great food till recently! We came in and waited to be seated for awhile. The restaurant was empty! We finally were seated and the waitress couldn't focus on what she was doing taking our order! As someone on Keto I asked for no bun on my cheeseburger! Which it came with a bun! But it was bad quality burnt to a crispy and chewy! Plus Mcdonald's burgers were bigger! I have been to other Black Bears and this was not up to their standards! The burger was so thin and tiny :-(. Asked waitress for blue cheese dressing and she brought back blue cheese crumbles! It took everything we had to finish our meal and leave! I rarely yelp but this needs to be said - this restaurant is extremely understaffed. I implore the owners to re-assess how many waiters and cooks they need to serve the number of patrons of their restaurant. We waited an hour and a half for our food! Had we known, we would have skipped this place. I even sat next to a trucker who said this is by far the slowest restaurant in the area, and that he only comes here if he has "a few hours to kill." Not a glowing review, seeing as he passes through the surrounding area frequently. Our waiter was apologetic and I felt for him. He was the only server assigned to 4 booths and an entirely full counter, which sat 12 I believe. He was running around trying to assist everyone, but it is clear that there should be 2 servers in the bar area. When we checked out, I noticed the rest of the restaurant had very few plates of food on the tables. People were twiddling their thumbs, looking at the kitchen expectantly. Food has very generous portions. Servers are aways nice and take care of your needs. They also have take out if you choose to get it and go.

I ordered the NY steak and, as someone trying to eat as healthy as possible while keeping protein high, I requested scrambled eggs instead of the usual two sides. Even though this option wasn't listed on the menu, they gladly accommodated my request. That kind of flexibility really elevates the experience--it makes you feel like your preferences matter and your meal is being made just for you. The only downside was the lack of staff presence at the register and around the dining area. It was difficult to find someone if you wanted to place an order or ask a question. This might have been due to being short-staffed or simply busy, but more attentiveness and eye contact from the staff--even if it's not their assigned table--would go a long way in improving the overall service. read more

I am so glad that we went to this location. I know it's attached to a gas station but for a Sunday prime eating time - we were seated right away and food came fast. Waitress was a good sport in regards to all of our sense of humors - she played along. Lots of veteran hats, tee shirts and more as far as the clientele so we felt right at home. Food was delivered quickly. Potatoes on my friends plate and my hubbies were eh - My friend ordered the more chopped up breakfast potato - kind of cold and mushy, I could taste whatever they cooked it in as well. I spit mine out and she didnt eat them after her first bite. Hubbys hash browns were chemically tasting and needed salt and I do not add salt to anything. Now the positive - My California benedict was yummy - I did ask for a well done english muffin and it was gross - you can tell it was heated up on the grill so it was mush and again whatever they use to cook with flavored it but I loved the benedict with the spinach so it was still good. Thought it would be better since they have loads of customers since it is part of a truck stop in western bound I 10 leaving Phoenix toward California border. 10 mins from Buckeye. The location is attached to the gas station. We walked in about 11am with no wait. We were seated immediately and our food arrived quickly, all but the order of waffles. The tuna sandwich, chicken noodle soup were delicious. My partner enjoyed his eggs and sausage. We were told 3 mins till the waffles would be out. We finished our meals with no waffles. Our server came back saying they were cleaning the machine so would start cooking once they were done. We asked her to take the waffles off our order as we would not be waiting for them. This was 15mins after our first plates arrived at our table. When we went up to pay, we waited for the 2 guests ahead of us. This BBD has only been opened since Aug 2023, which is barely 3 months ago. The decor is cute and classy. The location is great, conveniently off the freeway and close to gas station and a travel store, just before hitting crazy Phoenix traffic. Christopher, our server, was fabulous. He greeted us from behind the counter when we walked in, seated us as soon as he was able, introduced to us the newspaper menu and what's inside. On our way to Palm Springs we decided to stop at the Tonopa location of Black Bear Diner. After looking at some of the yelp reviews, we were kind of wondering if we made the right decision. But I am happy to report that our visit was five star! The restaurant is clean, tidy, and quaint! With blackbear stuff all over the place. It keeps your eyes busy looking at everything! We had the Joe's Hobo Omelette, which my husband and I split, (thank God...it was huge!) Three eggs, bacon, sausage, spinach, cheddar cheese...accompanied by fried potatoes and a biscuit. Thinking that the biscuit would be normal garden variety... we ordered another biscuit and oh my God, huge mistake! The biscuits are as big as your head! We could've easily split the one biscuit. I have to say everything was absolutely yummy. As for our server, Felipe, he's an absolute keeper! Friendly, prompt, courteous everything an owner would want their staff to be! Even the gal at the cashier counter, Layla, was friendly and sweet! You better believe we will be stopping there on our next visit to Palm Springs! The worst Black Bear I have ever been to. Country potatoes were almost raw, and had no crispy crust. Also there was a curly hair mixed in with them which I do not have. The Chorizo Breakfast burrito was missing the Chorizo so had no meat of any kind, just egg and undercooked potato. It wasn't wrapped properly and fell apart as soon as I picked it up. The utter lack of care and effort put into making this food for the price is astounding. Cashier wasn't rude but I wouldn't say friendly either, definitely not the level of customer service I expect from Black Bear Diner. This is for all Veterans out there. We live about 2 miles from this location so we go here al the time, usually on Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes we stop for dinner during the week if we had an an appt in town. I am very disappointed . This location use to give a "Veteran" discount but now they have changed their policy and only give the discount to "Active" duty. Shame on you Black Bear in Tonopah at the TA, 339th & I-10. I guess the Veteran's service to their country is no longer important to this Black Bear owner. One may think it is only a 10% discount but the money is NOT the point. It is the "Recognition of the Veteran's service that is important". My husband served for 4 years, he was in Vietnam 1965-1966 and btw he enlisted knowing he would go to Vietnam and fight for our country.
