The service here is usually pretty great. This particular day I'm reviewing is my most recent experience. The service was great, but the taste of the coffee could have been better. I like stronger coffee and it was pretty watered down. Next time I'll bring my own. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and was disappointed to learn the ham in it was just sandwich ham. I was expecting something a little more for the price. The temperature of the food was adequate the taste could have been better. The english muffin was not toasted to a crisp which left every bit chewy. Going forward I would not order this dish, and expect adequate but not GREAT food. read more

It was terrible. We weren't given utensils and it took forever for the waiter to take our order. In fact my daughter went and asked if they could bring more silverware to our booth and the waiter instead of doing it himself in a non busy restaurant gave them to my daughter to bring back. And then when we finally ordered we waited over 40 minutes and asked about the status of the food and the waiter said they were running behind, but there was only 3 other tables with smaller parties than ours. I've been coming to this BBD for all sorts of occasions: bday breakfast, Sunday brunch (lol), quick bites to eat after morning shifts, and even sat at the counter a couple times. And I must say I've never been underwhelmed. Great job BBD! Today my wife and I split the corn beef hash, had a couple cups of coffee...then had a strawberry rhubarb pie a la mode to finish off our breakfast. I came here on June 16 2021. Here for breakfast, ask if I could set at the counter. This was a mistake, I was there for a good 20min's finally someone ask if I wanted something to drink, I ask for water, didn't see any water for a while. My server finally came and ask to order. I as for Oatmeal scramble eggs and bacon. Ask about the milk, he said it comes in a small container, 2% milk I think they think it's the amount of milk, not the Grade of milk. All of this cost me $20.98. The food did come to me for a long time, it was cold wasn't worth eating, but I had to eat because of Health issues. This one of the more busier Black Bear Diners. The service is quite good and I was pleased with the food over all. I have liked the Black Bear Diner food for the most part. Except I wasn't impressed with the gravy. I like my biscuits and gravy to have more flavor! It's lacking the fresh cracked black pepper and homemade taste! I am spoiled when it comes to the quality of gravy, that Giant Chef Burger in Pleasant Hill makes! Besides that the food is tasty and quite a selection. Great experience except for family across from us was "FaceTiming" and the volume was pretty loud. I mean you could hear the conversation clearly. I mentioned this to waitress and she says she can't do anything about it. I then called the manager and she refused to say anything to the family. Came early morning with my husband and baby and we chose to dine outside. The waiter was very pleasant and nice. I had the strawberry lemonade and my husband had the regular lemonade. My lemonade was good but my husbands was water down. I was a bit disappointed with my food because it was very bland. The Jalapeños were the only thing that had some flavor in the bowl. I like this diner. They have a wide variety of food to choose from breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. Every time I have come here it has been a pleasant experience from the host to the servers and even the food is great too. I tend to come here for breakfast especially for their sweet cream pancakes. Those are my favorite along with their corn beef hash. The meatloaf and salads are good too. They even work with you if you want to substitute something out instead of carbs for more fruit, veggies or salad which I really appreciate. They also keep your glasses filled without having to flag someone down to refill and that in my book is always a plus. Another plus is they are open a little late so that's good for when we get here late night munchies. read more

Came here one evening to get my waffle fix. I left feeling disappointed... the waffle was soggy, no crispy edges, felt like I was eating a fat grainy pancake. Service needed some work, the waitress was nice while taking our order, but didn't come by to refill our drinks or talk to us again until she gave us our check. It wasn't even crowded, she was only serving another table aside from ours. $30 later - we left pretty unsatisfied and went to breakfast at Huckleberry's the next morning. read more

Horrible man I got sick for 21-25 days after eating here, I found a small hair in my food, but I was almost done anyways so Just left, this location they got someone there playing with the food or something not cool. It was really really busy and I think the cooks were just pissed off. After a very long time of not eating at Blackbear we decided to give them another chance and ordered food to go. I am so glad we did... Blackbear have redeemed themselves with a delicious meat filled Turkey Club Sandwich with Fries. Super larges 4 piece stacked with delicious turkey, bacon , lettuce and tomato on toasted wheat bread. Do not come here. The last 2 times I come here, I've ordered a salad & they ruined it. I told them exactly what I wanted and DID NOT want on the salad - and they agreed! Acknowledged! Pretended to listen to me! When I get home, there is EXACTLY what I told them I DID NOT WANT!! And the hard boiled egg? - Everyone knows a chef salad has hard boiled egg in it!! Called the restaurant to ask if they had any rare prime rib for their father's day special. The man who answered said yes. I told them I would be ordering from Uber Eats and wanted rare. Well, it wasn't. It was inedible, dry and overcooked. The potatoes had chicken gravy and were over salted. There was no horseradish sauce. The worst meal I have had from them yet. Very disappointed with Black Bear Diner. I have been frequenting this diner throughout California for many years. This week when I went to go pick up a large breakfast order, I noticed a "Packing fee" on my receipt when I got home. I completely understand that in these times restaurants need to make more money many time to stay in business, however, when it comes at the cost of simply packaging an order, that's when it becomes ridiculous. Packaging an order is not some sort of premium service. I sure won't make anymore to go orders but I will still dine in unless there are other added "fees." This is no way to do business. A fee at the cost of customer service especially a thing like packaging our food is not a way to conduct business..please do better. read more

I love this chain but this location is just not good. About a week ago I ordered their dinner special and it comes with a side salad. The cherry tomatoes in my and my husband's salad were all moldy, like VISIBLY had large parches of blue mold. I called the server over and asked for a replacement - her reaction was so disappointing. No apology, no " omg this never happens".It just felt like this didn't phase her. She comes back with a replacement salad for me - same issue. At that point I knew it was a food quality issue and the kitchen is likely not well maintained. Love this chain, but this location is a letdown. I'm a pretty big eater, and this place never lets me down. Black Bear blows comparable diners like Denny's or IHOP out of the water in terms of quality, quantity, and overall service. Every server I've had at Black Bear has been friendly and attentive, and although they don't know me by first name, they definitely remember who I am and what I like. I've eaten here probably 2-3 times a month for the last 5 years or so, and I've been satisfied pretty much every time. If you like big meals that are going to leave you feeling satisfied, put Black Bear on your list. Pro tip: don't leave any valuables in your car outside. This lot is notorious for break ins and smash & grabs. Hopefully we can get batman out here to make the lot a little safer for little old ladies. read more

Wow, what a downer. Our kitchen is under renovation so we've been ordering out a lot lately. Vallejo's Black Bear Diner has permanently lost our business. Our orders are incomplete, what food they do provided is unpalatable. I just ordered their tri-tip dip sandwich. When I went to pick it up, I asked where was the au jus? "Oh, I was just thinking about" was the response. My wife's open-face turkey sandwich looked as if it was made with turkey bologna. It was so bad, we didn't feed it to our dog. read more

We waited literally for an hour then we just left after trying and failing to get our waitress to check on our food. Used to be one of our family's favorite restaurants. I know this is a chain but being from the east coast I didn't know what to expect and was excited to try it for breakfast on Sunday morning. In true Sunday morning breakfast fashion, we had to wait for about 35 min and finally decided to take two seats at the bar - BONUS: we were able to watch the Eagles play .. at 10am.. still weird. I come here once a month and your service really depends on the server you have and it can range from amazing to poor. The food is also dependent on the server and the kitchen, but breakfast can hardly be done wrong. I am celiac and also gluten allergic and understand that there is cross contamination when coming here. Which is why I order food like a scramble or omelette with a side of fruit without bread. When your food comes out and there is residue bread and bread crumbs on your plate or specifically on your fruit, I send the bowl of fruit back to the kitchen. Sorry, not sorry. When the waitress walks to the kitchen and comes out almost immediately with your bowl of fruit and you see the same bread and bread crumbs in your bowl of fruit, you can either say something or not eat the fruit, because the waitress will not do anything about it anyway and bring the same bread filled fruit to your table, which you explained that you're allergic to. Know your waiters at this place, they are consistent with your service and experience. Today it was a 2 star experience - because this waitress doesn't care about your allergies. read more

Honestly, this place is so wholesome. It gives off the typical diner vibes along with the bear theme. The service is pretty good, they can be slower on busier days. The food is standard but the proportions are huge!! Definitely a meal that gives you a bang for your buck! This place had improved over the years. I remember that my family avoided this place because of the lack of flavor in the food, but that changed. Food: -Corned beef hash (5 out 5), it was slightly crispy and good ratio of meat, potatoe and eggs -Country Fried Steak and Egg (5 of 5). Good size and flavor of the steak. They give a lot of gravy, so some of you might want for the gravy on the side. Service: decent service. Nothing bad. About a fair wait time for brunch. Went to Suisun location for brunch with 9 family members. Our greeter was super friendly. Sat us in a short period of time. Food came out all at same time, all correct. Aaron was the BEST.
