I want to update this review as I've had the chance to talk with the owner of the salon. Bobbie the owner does not deserve to had his business or reputation diminished because of a stylist who did bad work. Speaking with Bobbie he was caring and professional. He was even willing to be an advocate in sharing my perspective to the stylist. He validated my concerns on what happened to my hair. I will always hold a high regard for Bobbie and I appreciate his kindness today. For anyone who reads this and the previous review I do not recommend seeing Mark Saenz. I try to be the most fair I can be in saying this. Maybe from this event or maybe sometime in the future he will gain more professionalism, kindness, and humility that would make me feel differently but for now I believe it's fair and just to say he is not a stylist you want to see. read more

I finally found the BEST! 2 days of reviewing Yelp reviews and I decided to go with Bobbi @ Black Butterfly. I'm sooo glad I did! I came in with a mess ready to shave it all off and left so HAPPY! After a dye, cut, and style I'm back in love with my hair again! I gave Bobbi freedom to fix and yes he did! Bobbi will be the only person I let touch my hair from now on! Oscar is AMAZING. Probably one of the best stylists I've ever had. I went in for a hair cut because my hair was getting way too long. My friend has been Oscar's client from previous salons and I've always loved her hair so I decided to make an appointment. I'm very picky with my stylists because I've had so many bad experiences, but Oscar was phenomenal. He made sure to listen to what I said but wasn't afraid to offer his suggestions, too. I left in love with my hair and I cut about 7 inches off - I've never done something that extreme and loved it right away. I plan on going back! read more

Two stars for the two times I was there when the owner wasn't. He needs an attitude adjustment. It is unreal how uncomfortable he made me feel when he was in the salon. During my first extremely uncomfortable visit, he slammed his foot on the floor over and over again because the bar downstairs was playing music. It was so jarring and he was cursing while he was doing it. The next interaction i had with him was when he ASKED ME to LEAVE because he wanted to "speak" to my stylist. It was horrible and embarrassing to be asked to leave the salon while my stylist was "spoken" to. This guy owns the salon? Unbelievable. read more

I am so grateful that I took a leap from an previous stylist at another salon to begin having Chad Morrell at Black Butterfly Salon start cutting my hair. It was a little over a year ago now and he's stuck with me as a client forever now! Thats what happens when you do such great work! I have short, stubborn, baby fine hair that doesn't like to 'do' anything. Good thing that Chad knows exactly how to cut it and whip it right into shape to make it do exactly what I want it to do. I always leave the salon feeling like a million bucks! Also, I can always reproduce the style the next day at home. You know how that works when you go to a stylist who makes your hair all perfect and you love it...but then the next day you can't for the life of you make it do that perfection again?..... yeah.,.. I don't ever have the problem when Chad cuts and styles my hair. I have also seen the amazing job he does when using color and when he works on people with varying hair lengths. I love Brett! He's been cutting my hair for about 4 years now. He has a great eye and I've always felt really comfortable with him. I like that all I have to do is sit down, tell him in a few words or hand gestures what I want, and he will just do the damn thing! I followed him from another salon to Black Butterfly. It used to be a really small, two chair shop and now they've expanded and the whole place is really clean and open. They're located on the second floor above Badlands, so you have a great view of the most happening corner in Sac. Seriously, you never know what you will see here lol. $55 for a haircut, including shampoo, amaaazing head massage, and style. So worth it!!! read more

Are you ready for this review??? I don't think that you are. I don't think that you can HANDLE this review!!! Out of all of my yelps...This one means the most thus far. Bobbie Blackstone is a Hair God... I have had my hair cut at many different places. I have yelp'd about a few. They were all good yelps too. None of them come close to my experience with Bobbie. He is sincere and actually cares about how your hair turns out. He has attention to detail which a lot of barbers/ hair dressers do not. He has hands that are soft like an angels. His salon is very welcoming and centrally located on the grid. After you get your hurr did, you can trot downstairs for a drink at The Depot or walk across to LowBrau for wurst and bier. Back to Bobbie. I have never felt more comfortable in the hands of a barber. I felt like a movie star the entire time. I will ONLY get my hair cut by Bobbie from now on. and that's real. I have been going to Bobbie for 4+ years now and I wont go to anyone else as long as he is in business. Over the 4+ years he has made a personal house call when I had surgery, and taken me on a moments notice many times. I cant say that he will do that off the bat for anyone but I will say that's the kind of respectable person that he is. He knows his products and he knows hair! The owner/proprietor had previously cut my hair back about 3 years ago. He came highly recommended and he did a good job of my hair then. When I walked into his salon on this Thursday, he said he did not remember me at all. That was not an issue for me. I had seen a young man in the hallway whose haircut I liked. I told Bobby (the proprietor) that I liked that haircut. When I sat down to have my haircut, I told Bobby could you cut the sides about like this and with my thumb and forefinger put in showed him that it was like a fourth of an inch. In a irritated tone Bobby said, when you said like his hair I thought you meant like his hair. At this point I decided to go through with a haircut as Bobby had done a good job 3 years ago. As I was having my haircut Bobby told me not to move my head as he was cutting it. I also found that irritating but determined to have my hair finished I sat there. I really feel that if you wants regular customers you have to treat them nice, and Bobby appeared to be in a bad mood or to be bothered by this customer. Bobby cut my hair to an acceptable level. However, I am not likely to return. This hair salon gets only up to Star for bad attitude. Here is some advice to anyone that sees Bobby, if you pick up that the there is a negative vibe, just don't have your haircut and excuse yourself. Because I am a nice person and my haircut was acceptable, I tipped him $20 over the $55 he charged me. However, I will never return and he lost my business. I think it's sad that this hairdresser or stylist was grumpy and not friendly and acted like he was bothered by my request. To that I say whatever goodbye. read more

Bobby is fantastic and does amazing color! The only problem I have experienced is with mid town parking. They are getting very strict on the 2 hour limit and I have received parking tickets for being 5 minutes late! That said, a cut, color and style takes all of 2 hours!!!! read more

I followed Sommer here from a different salon. Not only does she cut my hair beautifully and skillfully, she is wonderfully entertaining. I look forward to every appointment just to catch up like old friends! She did my hair for my wedding ceremony (traditional) and for the 1980's reception (not-so-traditional). Both styles held up beautifully throughout the night. The atmosphere in the salon is fun and lively. And it's conveniently located downtown. I would recommend to anyone! read more

I have had many hairstylist attempt to tame my hair. Many have failed. OK, actually all have failed. Except Oscar. I followed him to this salon after he left his previous one. Honestly I would follow him anywhere since he is the only one that can handle my thick, curly, previously frizzy hair. I get the Global Keratin Smooting treatment every 3 months and the occasional color. I get so many compliments. It leaves my hair smooth, shiny, healthy, and manageable. Oscar is not only an awesome stylist but he is very friendly and easy to talk to. The Salon itself if very cute and clean and the decor is nice. read more

Read a highly rated YELP review on this salon, so I booked an appt early in Jan for a color and cut on Jan 23rd, which just happened to be my birthday. I spoke with the hairstylist, Bobbie, numerous times before the appt. On the day of the appt, I was running late. (I'm retired, so i move slow). I phoned the salon to advise them of this, to see if I should reschedule my appointment so as not to disrupt the appt after mine. Bobbie insisted I could make it from Roseville to Midtown Sac in 24 minutes, which would give me 10 minutes to find parking. I was then told if i did not come in, I would have to pay a $50 administrative fee because I did not give a 24 hour notice of cancellation. THERE IS NO MENTION OF THIS ADMINISTRATIVE FEE ON THE SALON'S WEBSITE, and I told Bobbie that. Apparently a text message is sent to confirm the date and time of the appt, as well as mention the administrative fee. I never received the text message, as Bobbie had my landline phone number, not my cell phone number. I ended the call. I decided NOT to drive to Midtown Sac, I was too rattled. Getting bad vibes from the phone call. I didn't want a bad color and cut. I did pay the administrative fee, but I am not happy about it. Awful customer service. I found them through a deal site but it is apparent that they are too good to take thrifty people as clients. I could feel the disdain over the phone when I tried to book an appt and let it be known I had a deal voucher. Rude again when getting my name, still ruder when taking my phone number. If the salon is that inept when answering the phone, no way am I letting them touch my hair. AND, finally since I gave my name, the rude person lied that I actually used the voucher. read more

Hands down worst experience at a salon EVER!!! Bought a keratin treatment on living social. Walked in owner/stylist did not even say hello it was obvious he was in a pissy mood. I had to awkwardly say hello to break the silence. He hardly said a word to me until 1 hour into the treatment when he reprimanded me for leaning forward in my chair to reach my coffee. "Don't do that I don't want that stuff (keratin product) on my chair." Wow! Anyway after he told me he was going to have to charge me extra for the treatment (long, thick hair) he lightened up and began to treat me like a human being. So he completed the treatment and when I got home I realized he had done it incorrectly by washing out the product. I went to the manufacturers website and watched the step by step guide for the California smooth keratin treatment and of course no washing it out but blow drying and straightening with it in. Of course 3 days later when I washed my hair it was no straighter than when I walked in to that abusive appointment. A salon visit should be relaxing and refreshing not abusive and uncomfortable. Do not waste you time or money with this guy!!! read more

Bobby was very welcoming- though he did not cut my hair. Chad cut my hair and did magic to it. I love it..... He is the defition of awesome.
