cute little place on main st. they appeared to be under renovations, but not sure. they don't have menus, the menu is on the wall. lots of cozy seating. the food was ok, but i came for the baked goods. I didn't see anything other than croissants and a few cookies. I tried the egg and potato burrito and the yogurt with granola. Both were average but the yogurt was less than average and my daughter didn't want to eat it. they were nice to enough to put the toppings on the side (berries and granola) so she ate that and a cookie. coffee was decent but served in a mug (dine in). great place to meet friends and chat. read more

Staff is very friendly and the food is excellent. Looks like the kind of place with coffee and a few pastries, but has a very good breakfast and lunch menu. I've tried quite a few items and have not been disappointed with anything. I was surprised to see a review kvetching about the prices, and wonder if this person's been to a restaurant in the past year or so? Or anywhere else? Inflation is very real, especially in restaurants which are paying massively higher prices for everything. Some places have been cutting back on portion sizes or quality -- and I'm happy to say Black Cat is serving generous portions and the quality of everything I've tried has been great. read more

Delicious food in a warm, cute, and welcoming atmosphere! The staff was very accommodating with our party of five and were quick to put together a table. Everyone loves the coffee drinks they ordered. Two of us got the burritos and they were outstanding! One person got the country omelet and loved it, especially the fun factor of having the hash browns inside! The French Toast was very good and the side of hash browns came in a nice crock. Came here with my aunt for a small breakfast. Adorable spot with delicious breakfast options and fresh coffee/lattes. I had a caramel latte which came out perfectly; they honored my request to have it served "not too hot" and it was not too sweet. My aunt enjoyed a regular coffee with an original breakfast burrito while I noshed on a country omelette with toast. It is a small cafe with not a lot of seating and it is cash only (there are banks and ATM's close by). Great service, friendly staff, great ambiance, stellar location (the cafe is located at the top of a hill overlooking the Hudson) and the food/drinks were fresh and served quickly. Loved this cute little place! We We arrived in town and wanted somewhere to grab an easy lunch. Crowded inside but they made room for our group of 4. We all had different lunch items, though one friend ordered breakfast. You could taste the freshness in all of the food! Super friendly wait staff and patient with me as I didn't know the way things worked here (you order and pay at the counter and then they bring the food to you). The food is prepared in a minimalistic and health conscious fashion and is very simple; but this gives you the option to add the condiments of your choice. Keep in mind it is cash only, and there is no "wait staff" here. When you are ready to place your order, you head up to the front and let them know. Overall, if you're looking for a "trendy" cafe this spot isn't for you; definitely has a more laid back, small town vibe. But, the food is good and the wait staff is incredibly nice. read more

I've found my go-to Sunday morning cafe. Finally. After two months of searching. They have extensive breakfast, lunch, and hot chocolate (!!) menus, as well as a nice assortment of caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks. The food is pretty pricey and not particularly memorable, but really, the location and atmosphere of the Cafe pay for itself. The cafe - even when full - isn't particularly loud, which is conducive to hardcore studying (or yelping). There aren't many outlets though - I think the only two I've found are by the tables closest to the doors..and these tend to be snagged pretty quickly. The few times I've been here, I've been able to find street parking directly in front of the cafe. The signs say that you only get an hour of parking, but I've parked in front of the cafe for 3-4 hours at a time and it hasn't been a problem yet. Tip: They are cash only, so remember to stop by the ATM on the way in! read more

A place that has about a dozen different varieties of hot cocoa earns four stars simply based on that fact. Apart from the hot cocoa list, this is a very quaint and cozy place nestled into Main Street of Irvington, a short walk up the hill from the village's MetroNorth station. They provided an assortment of sandwiches, soups, salads, teas, coffees, and pastries as well. Seating was enough for perhaps 16 or so patrons, if I may guesstimate*. Unfortunately, when you come in with a party of three and single people are hogging tables meant for multiple patrons with their laptops, you do have to impatiently yet politely wait a bit for those people to "get a clue" and move to a table that wouldn't inhibit three people from sharing a common eating space. (Side note: FREE WI-FI! Oh, happy days!) I ordered their Grilled Fontina Cheese Sandwich with roasted red peppers and avocados on ciabatta bread. Beyond fabulous! One friend ordered a veggie burger that was to her liking. My other friend ordered a Caprese sandwich that was decent enough for her; she complained about the lack of promised pesto and never did finish the sandwich. You get your choice, with some sandwiches, of potato chips or pretzels. I've NEVER been offered pretzels as a side option, but it's an option I certainly like! (I ordered the chips, however, because I needed some salt and grease in my life. Of course.) When it finally came time for my hot cocoa, I opted for a small Nutella Hot Cocoa. Real Nutella is used! I saw the waitress scoop a spoonful straight from the jar and blend it with my cocoa. The result was delicious! Not overwhelmingly loaded with hazelnut flavor; quite complimentary, in fact. I'm sitting here typing and fantasizing about it...no shame...as Nutella pretty much equates to ambrosia in some culinary circles. Their menu boasted some tasty looking breakfast options! My friends and I will definitely be coming back to try them, along with the other varieties of cocoa. I've got a dozen more to try! * - I hate that term. This place has the best home fries I've ever had in Westchester Country. It's also super clean and wasn't crowded. The staff were polite and professional. The coffee was a little burnt but you can doctor it up at the self help coffee area. I'd come back for the fries. I'd like to try them for lunch one day too. The only negatives are there are no restrooms that I could see. It's also pull in head on street parking, so be careful when you're backing out of your spot. We went for Saturday morning breakfast at the Black Cat and it was a very quaint experience. I had the three cheese omelette; I wanted quiche but they did not have the kind I was hoping for. The omelette was perfectly cheesy; full of mozzarella, cheddar and (insert third cheese I forgot here). It was also generously sized. The home fries on the side were also delicious, and I sampled a slice of French toast which was yummy too. The portions aren't necessarily tiny, but I wasn't fully full after my meal either. I think for the prices, they could spare a little bit more food per plate. The coffee is good and it's a cute location with outside seating overlooking the Hudson. They also do not accept cards, so be sure to have cash on hand. Overall a good visit. Might come back for some quiche some other time! Thanks! read more

I have to go on record as NOT being a cat lover, in fact I'm severely allergic to cats, but had no allergies while dining here yesterday despite the 3 adoptable cats in residence. The Black Cat Cafe exists to raise money to save cats from kill shelters (I heartily support this goal). I just saw that the Black Cat Cafe serves ice cream, so I got a friend to join me for an afternoon ice cream break. They serve one of the top local ice cream brands - Bassett. Prices are comparable to Handel's, Kilwins and many other ice cream shops, but here you are supporting a worthy cause while eating premium ice cream. The woman serving us (I'm sorry I didn't get her name) was a very good salesperson for both the ice cream and the cause. In addition to coffee and ice cream, the small kitchen also serves lunch and now dinner. Prepare to wait, as they are understaffed, but also prepare for good food for a good cause. Wow. I swore I saw Angela Lansbury solving a crime around the corner. This sweet little spot in this sweet little town was just what we needed after a night of poker and White Russians at my brother Sawyer's farm in Cobbleskill. Before heading back to the city I CHOWED down a Thanksgiving Sandwich...yep...you know with turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberry on some yummy 9 grain bread. Cute. Cozy. Comfortable. Cute little cafe! My sister and I were visiting the area for the weekend. Not wanting to pay for the overpriced breakfast at the hotel we found this gem. The Black Cat is in the perfect location for a commuter. I pull right up to one of its parking spots on Main Street, right in front of it, and grab a coffee. The coffee is delicious. I love it. Plus, they always have an awesome coffee sleeve. I have a few saved and they sit on my desk at work. One says "smiling is contagious." How do you throw that away? Just another bland coffee shop & sandwich place like so many others that dot the little towns along the Hudson River where locals go to mull over their fair trade coffees, homemade sandwiches, and New York Times to make themselves feel superior and a "part of the community" while they look sullenly out the window. Seriously: there are a lot better types of these places all over the little towns that dot the Hudson River. This place needs to step up their game. Food was bland and overpriced. For some reason, my salad did not come with dressing while the other salad ordered at the table did. Hmm.... The salad and sandwiches were something I could have easily made at home for a lot less and be a lot more delicious. I asked the person I was eating with what they thought of their sandwich and the only he could say was "At least it's nutritious." Nutritious food doesn't have to be bland. Service was good though. I did not have any coffee drinks so I can't speak for how good (or bad) they were, but, it's okay because it's doubtful I will ever be back to try a coffee. read more

Nice place! I had about an hour to kill in Irvington before a business meeting and had a serious desire to go to an independent coffee place. Surprisingly easy street parking available at 4:30pm on a Thursday. Very cute interior, local art hanging on walls, and the menus are handwritten on chalkboards. Cool hipster girl behind the counter was totally unpretentious and didn't roll her eyes when I asked what latte flavors were available. Woohoo! Unfortunately their kitchen closes earlier in the day so I wasn't able to try one of their paninis/sandwiches (they looked amazing) but my coffee was great. Expensive though, a 16oz (large) latte runs 4.50. But it comes in a cool Black Cat Cafe mug with a cool slogan.... "Leave Your Superstitions at the Door." I like that. Free wifi that is tremendously fast, and free cups of water. They're cash only so make sure you're aware of that. I'll try to return someday! read more

The cafe is a really charming and cozy place, and they have an excellent menu. I asked for chai, inquired how it was made, and found out they use a powdered mix rather than making it from scratch. Also, it is very expensive and they charge $6 for a 20 oz cup (or $6.50 for a 24 oz ... and less for smaller cups). Needless to say, I walked out but keep in mind that my grade is for my disappointment in their chai. I was looking forward to settling into the nice atmosphere of the cafe and trying some of their food (which looked delicious), but left since they didn't have home-brew chai. read more

Though there are lots of different kinds of teas and several choices of hot chocolate, unfortunately I wasn't impressed with what I tried. E.g. I've had Ghrardelli chocolates but the hot chocolate didn't taste much different than a Swiss Miss instant. The teas aren't better than some tea bags you can find in grocery stores. I like that they have a good selection of diner-type and quality food to go with the drinks. I like the location and the space is inviting, but they must have single-pane windows and leaky doors because it is COLD in there. Hardly anyone took off their coats and hats as they sat inside. Three years later and the food (lunch and breakfast) is always freshly made with premium ingredients and delicious and the coffees and teas are excellent. Service from a staff of really lovely folks is always with a smile and although you can may hit a lunch or breakfast crowd, you can get your meal to go in an old-fashioned box! Improvements since 2015 include a new layout that allows more people to enjoy the space comfortably and additional home-baked desserts.....This is a true community hub, where people meet to chat and to work.....at times live music events are scheduled in the early evenings as well........There was a pop-up tapas restaurant that transformed the cafe during evening hours during r the summer of 2018 that was amazing.....if we all stay-tuned maybe it will come back in 2019! read more

I really liked this place. I had a French vanilla latte that was really delicious - way better than any Starbucks coffee I've had. The place had an old, quaint feel, which I expect in a sweet, historic community town like Irvington. What made this place great is the friendliness of the barista, who I found out upon further conversation, was the weekend manager. Late on a Saturday night, we were the only two people in the place, so she spent some time talking to me so I didn't feel so isolated. I will definitely be back to say hello and meet some of the other town folk. Additionally, I didn't get to try them yet, but this place has freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. A great coffee shop with surprisingly good food. Black Cat has all the tea and coffee you'd expect, expertly prepared and served piping hot. They're big on reducing waste and encourage customers to bring in their own mugs, which I appreciate. There's a tempting display of desserts (I don't think they make their own, but they have chocolate pastries when I need them) and an ever-changing, seasional menu. They have homemade soups and quiche offered daily. Their breakfast burritos are fantastic-- now offered every day. They also have a big selection of salads and panini's. If you're ordering food, realize that this is NOT fast food. Each dish is made from scratch so if you're there with a group it will take some time for everyone to be fed. read more

This is one of my favorite lunchtime treats during the work week. The lunch specials are reasonably priced and more importantly good for you. The veggie burger is really yummy with a black bean base and some spice. My all time favorite is the chipotle chicken wrap. The cheese they use in the wrap is so amazing and addicting. Plus, to add the health benefit, all lunches are served with either a salad, pretzels or carrots. I always get the salad which has some fennel in it and a great dressing.
