Writing this makes me really sad, but as much as I have always loved their black cat bomb I don't think I'm going to ever go back. I go in today and the guy behind the counter isn't wearing a mask and is talking to another customer about how it is basically covid is not a big deal, it's like the flu and you can just get a vaccine for it. Unfortunately, I have a friend who got it really bad and now struggles to live her daily life due to it messing up her lungs. Therefore, I can't consciously support a business that has this stance and doesn't want to take the basic idea of wearing a mask to protect others seriously. Unfortunately, the girl working must have been in a bad mood. Have worked in a coffee shop so I know how an experience should be. I ordered but then realized my friend asked for a little sweetener so I asked the girl to add a little vanilla and she was super rude about it. I offered to pay and she said well it makes no sense now. At the end I gave her a dollar to pay for the tiny bit of sweetener added and she didn't say bye or have a good day or thank you or anything. I was not welcome to eat my sandwich there that I just bought because I had a outside beverage. I didn't want coffee, I was drinking a tea that I brought in. I came to this coffee shop because on Saturday at noon to study, and I am super glad I did because it has free wifi and tables with outlets for charging laptops and phones. There are also couches to sit on and relax if you prefer it over the woode and leather chairs. The music they played was very relaxing indie style tunes, which complemented the studying well enough for me. I also decided to order their Turkey Bacon Wrap with Granola and Yogurt for lunch when I got hungry. The wrap was cooked well and came with a hearty amout of eggs and tomatoes. The yogurt with granola was smooth and crunchy, just the way I like it. The meal portion was very fair for the relatively cheap price I paid. I was craving a refreshing beverage today since our summer heat is in full swing and popped in to get an iced tea. Not only did they have iced tea, they had tropical!! MY FAVORITE. She says "Can you speak up lets not mumble." Okay well that was rude? I speak up and she still cannot hear me and she says "Okay are you going to speak up or what?" So when I speak SPEAK up she goes "I asked you to speak up not to shout like a karen." After that I asked "Is there a reason you're talking to me like that like what is going on?" She goes and says "Maybe because your kind has a hearing issue i dont know" Excuse me what? "Your kind" who exactly is my fucking kind? I thought nothing of it until i went ahead and added my regular Scrambler bowl. I uttered the words "Can i have extra salsa on that please?" and our lovely barista went "Yea I know how much your people love that stuff. Are you done is that it?" This is where I draw the line. "Your kind" and "You people" are two great phrases to kindly tell me you want us to fuck right off because we aren't White. Im so very sorry I, a Mexican American Citizen, is ordering at a coffee shop that has the word "BLACK" in its name. To Tanya, the owner, you have done a bang up job or telling your friends and employees to go on Yelp and write up some great reviews to boost you up but I should've listened to the others who have had awful experiences recently. And the way you respond to customers? And their grievances regarding service at your spot and how they're treated? I often struggle finding a quiet place to study but not too quiet (to let my mind wonder) and Black Cat Coffee House just became my favorite spot for that! Ownership has changed here and for the better! About a year ago, the original owner Don sold it to some guy who had no idea what he was doing, and now it's changed hands again...but this time, these new owners are taking great pride in Black Cat and to giving their customers supreme and speedy service with a smile! Black Cat continues to be a phenomenal place to grab your favorite caffeinated beverage, and they also offer delicious snacks and savories. The zucchini bread is outstanding. Be sure to try their Thai iced tea (which you can get with non-fat milk instead of cream if you're watching your calories like me)...super yummy! Their hot chocolate is also to die for. The new owners also do a fantastic job and keeping Black Cat clean and cozy. They've brought in some nice new art work to spruce up the surroundings. Like other reviewers have stated, the owner of this otherwise decent establishment is one of those anti-science, anti-intellectual, anti-masker nut jobs who downplays the severity of COVID and makes BS 'medical condition' excuses even though the entirety of medical science, the CDC, and the WHO proves them wrong. I am a diagnosed asthmatic who runs, work outs, and plays basketball IN A MASK daily and its never been a problem. Healthcare workers wear much more restrictive N95 masks and full PPE gear for the entirety of their overtime shifts, yet the owner and some of the employees are too much of babies to wear a comfy surgical/cloth mask for the safety and comfort of other people. As a result of this owner's delusions, there is no mask usage at this place and distancing measures are poor. Do NOT come here if you care about your health. And instead of complying with public health guidelines to make their customers feel more comfortable and protect their health, the owner private messages complaints to harass the customer, spouting absolute nonsense and disinformation about COVID. It seems several of the employees are like this as well. Absolute selfishness and a terrible shame that this decent coffee shop is run by delusional and selfish people. This was quite a nice little coffee shop on the East side of Phoenix. I met my friend there for a quick visit. It was a nice day , so we sat outside. Our coffees were great,nice and strong ,but not bitter. Customer service was very good , as well as they place was well laid out and clean. Quite busy as well for the middle of the day. So that is saying something. Since there is lots of competition around. Lots of Coffee and Tea drinks as well as Juice and water. They have Pastry and the usal fare that you find in a Coffee Shop. There are several reasons why I can never camp out at other standard coffee shops (e.g., Starbucks): I don't enjoy the food, or the coffee, or the crowd. But then I came to Black Cat. And now I don't want to leave. I know what you're thinking: "If it's not crowded, it's not delicious, and if it's crowded, it must be great." No. It just means that most people are sheep [who enjoy burnt coffee]. I have been sitting here for the past two hours, and there has never been a moment at which every single table filled up. That means I could have walked in at any moment and found a table. I wasn't hungry yet, so I started out with an iced apricot (white) tea. No sweetener, and it is superb. I read some of the other reviews before I came, so I knew to order a large. Smart move. I got hungry a few minutes ago and ordered the Black Cat Melt (Smoked ham, provolone, Dijon mustard, red onion, grilled on marbled rye) with a side of fruit. I apologize for not having taken a picture, but I was hooked at the first bite. This is a thick-sliced rye, toasted to a warm-but-not-burnt perfection (how did they know I like my toast this way?!); the Dijon mustard is a delectable mustard, and there is just the right amount of ham and cheese--not so much that I feel gluttonous, but not so little that I feel deprived. And there is a banana on my plate. And it doesn't have any bruises. I'm in heaven. While I was waiting for my sandwich, I took my headphones off long enough to hear some of the employees talking to a very talkative little boy. He was having a ball. Anyone who can engage a small child and simultaneously make a sandwich this perfect has my vote. I plan to be here for the rest of the afternoon. My issues with black cat The employees are consistently rude. I used to go a lot because it was convenient for me. I've worked in the service industry (and I'm well aware of how difficult the work is, however) I can't imagine ever speaking to a customer with the tone that these employees do. I was served spoiled food. I was not allowed to use the restroom, even as a paying customer. This is fine by me if the employees could have directed me somewhere else, but alas, I was told the bathroom was only for employees and nothing more. Honestly, I understand all of these things happening as a one off issue. My last straw however comes in the reply's that the company has left to people on Apple reviews. I've read through the good and the bad, and all of the more negative reviews are replied to in a snarky tone (as usual) and do nothing to actually try to address the issues customers have. How difficult is it to reply and address legitimate issues a customer has? At this point, it's lost my family's business. read more

Notice to Artists and Makers who aspire to feature their work on these walls: you will pay a $100 non-refundable fee under the table (handshake deal) for the allowance to feature your work on this shops' walls. The owner reserves the right to rescind this allowance without as much as a 2-3 week notice, and don't be surprised if it is sprung on you on your next visit in person rather than done through a call, text, or social media request to talk beforehand. Be prepared for it to possibly take place in front of your family, too. "I need you to take your work down within a few weeks. I took a deposit from a new artist today and it will be in the space you occupy. Goodbye." Why? Don't ask. The rationale will not be provided even if requested. Perhaps it is because the prospect of collecting $100 from a new maker is desired, even if it means cycling out tenured makers/artists without discussing it beforehand. This even means cycling out uncommon media like woodwork; this medium generated a lot of interest from visitors in a years' time. Consider $100 out of pocket to hold a place on a wall a good bit of money just for you to be given the boot unexpectedly. Advice: Don't forget the term handshake deal. Get any terms in writing, signed and dated by both you and the owner. And be sure to consider other options before resting on Black Cat. If you do commit to featuring at Black Cat, make it a 50% refundable deposit to prevent a total loss when you get the boot. This is a coffee shop with character. The owner is kind, keeps a clean shop, and makes a bomb Thai Iced tea from scratch. Location: Like most places in Arizona, this coffee shop is located in a strip mall. There's a Safeway in the mall and a few restaurants as well. It's a great area to run errands in. Atmosphere: It's a little dark in here, but not so much that you can't get work done. I generally prefer light and airy spaces, but Black Cat offers a different and just as appreciated environment. It's cozy here, and makes me wish that Phoenix had more rain so that I could curl up in a seat with a hot cup of tea, and listen to the rain drops. There are also paintings on the walls done by local artists. The owner brings in new work every few months to change the mood. Seating: there are high tops, and many low tables to sit at. I would go with a huge group, but 4-6 people would sit comfortably. Drinks: I ordered the Thai Iced Tea- I didn't want a pre-mixed overly sweet drink however, so the owner made mine from scratch at the same price. It was an absolute STEAL. The only thing I would've had differently was putting simple syrup in my drink instead of the honey. I hadn't realized that there was simple syrup at the back of the cafe. The drink itself was strong and flavorful - a favorite for sure. $3.50 for a large. ALSO: taxes are included in the price. Love it.
