Love this place, the atmosphere is great and the staff are cool and friendly, and the beer tastes good too.

Now those of you who know me, know I'm not one for reviews either good or bad. However, I'm willing to make an exception in moment like this. So, here it goes: This place is the equivalent of Disneyland for adults. With it's dark, somewhat morbid, intoxicating, and welcoming vibe, you are immediately in an escape from reality. To understand the complexities of this place, you need to break it down into three categories. First, we focus on the design and layout. Upon walking in, you're immersed into a 13th century, dark, friendly, and intriguing setting. With Plague Doctors throughout, skeletons, apparel, glimpses of the functioning brewery, and a design focused around the professional skateboarder lifestyle, I was swept off my feet. The stage, hosting trivia, bingo, rock bands, and occasionally comedians (me), you're always in for a treat. With the flow and design of Black Plague, you're brought into a world of pure (dark) imagination. Second, we focus on the quality of service. When it comes to service, there are no harder working beer tenders than at Black Plague. From upper management, to the brew team, to the beer tenders, you're guaranteed a sweet and simple moment of bliss. Hard work, friendly talk, and a genuine love for beer makes you confident in each and every selection they may recommend. I cannot say enough about the team at Black Plague. No matter who you see, they will always make you feel like family. Last, but far from least, we need to focus on the quality of the beer. In order to do so, allow me to spell out my living will for you. It goes something like this, "Life is the purest form of emotional and physical expression. We have many opportunities in life to make the choice between right and wrong. We love, we cry, and we long for more. This place is pretty good, the food however you have to order outside and they don't have a very big menu just burgers to choose from and one item of nachos. That doesn't really qualify as bar food. The beer was a lot better, they have a few options that are delicious. I have not been on an event night but it's probably better than during the day. Seems like a lot of males come here more than female, I'd probably give it another shot to try if I was in the area, but I wasn't completely sold on this place I did not realize that the food was separate from the bar. That's a good thing. Probably not going to eat that again, like who doesn't melt the cheese onto the actual nachos. I definitely will give a second chance here at the brewery. read more

COVID update. At the moment you can pick up beer to go on a station outside. I also had some delivered to the house. My new discovery is "In My Darkest Sour". I've been OK with a sour here or there but this one is something I can't stop drinking. I hope they come up with a great reopening plan. Maybe use some of the backspace or limit how long we stay which would be fine with me. /// Great place. A lot of space to be comfortable. Classy but friendly and casual. Bar seating, big tables to fit your family or friends. Great space for dogs. I have really enjoyed the beers. 1347 (year of the plague) is a solid IPA. Feb2019, Haze of our Lives is great, The Offering also, a haze that is easy to drink; Bring Out Your Dead I like at 60IBU, End of Thyme nice in a taster. Older comments: I keep getting flights which are 5 healthy pours. The people are cool, smart, nice. Often food outside that can come in. // Weeks later : I keep buying the flights because I just love it that way. If I like seven or eight beers why would I drink just one? Today I am reminded how fantastic Tropicus is. I've been getting that breakfast stout every time. I really don't like drinking a pint of stout but I love having a taste of it. Shoots Poke is the food tonight and Chrome Domes is the band. // Tonight Sept 3, Scotch Ale, great, rough like rye taste. Blood Orange, great. Alta Mors double IPA. Strong taste. Samoa stout nitro. Creamy rich. Interesting. I preferred the milk stout. Finish with Tropicus. // Moonage Food Co truck tonight. Price high. Taste out of this world. A spiritual experience. Esp. Korean Werewolf. TV on the truck showing Spinal Tap silent. This is one BIG suggestion for Black Plague. Toss the flight cards. They will always be wrong/outdated and easier to write the names down. // Samoa Cookie says it has cocoa and coconut, but subtle as ever. Great. I can't love this place more - decor - awesome beers - kickass service and so much more including outdoor seating!

It is unbelievable to fathom that this very well run place has been open only for a few months. The folks behind the counter and the brewmasters seem to have the craft of not only making excellent beer but running a brewery mastered in such a short period of time. Skateboarding has a significant impact on the internal decor of this place and probably has something to do with the fact that Jordan Hoffart apparently is the Director of Brand here. The first thing you notice when you walk in is that this place is HUGE. At more than 12000 sq. ft. they have plenty of space to ensure the guests feel extremely nice and comfortable when they walk in to have sip or two. It is hard to miss the extensive emphasis on the skateboard theme and I am told that a large majority of the taproom was actually skater-built. The aesthetics of the place aside, the beer was awesome. I tried a few and all of them stood out for their unique flavors. The Tropicus, a tropicus style Ale with an ABV of 5.3% and 47 IBU is Black Plague's take on fruit beer. I found the notes of Blood Orange and grapefruit very subtle and I liked it primarily because despite the perceived intention, this beer was overly sweet but carried intense flavor. This was followed by the Samoa Milk Stout. At 6.8% ABV, this drink served both on Nitro and otherwise had a distinct taste of Chocolate and Coconut infusions. I appreciated the non-Nitro version more and I would be going back to get a better taste of this spread out over an hour or more to get a better appreciation of the complexity. The Freedom Scotch Ale was my favorite. At 7.9% ABV and 19 IBU, this was intensely flavorful and not super strong or overpowering. This Wee Heavy has definitely gone through a well perfected caramelization of the wort. I loved the perfect amount of sweetness coupled with a subtle tea-like bitterness rendered in the drink. You feel that the brewer stands out for not adhering to any specific guidelines and is not scared to operate outside traditional boundaries a little bit. This definitely makes for unique and innovative products. I truly am thankful for the wonderful team who come across as passionate about their craft and truly striving to come up with some product that is unique and so flavorful. The day I visited this place, they had the Baja Seafood taco truck parked up front so I was fortunate enough to pair their awesome beer with some delicious Steak and Habanero Shimp tacos. I would call and see when they would be back at the brewery. The pairing simply worked wonders for me... :) read more

Fun place, tasty beer. it's off the beaten path, located in industrial park. We visited on Saturday with our dogs. There were locals dining on pizza with their kids (who entertained our two Whippet Dogs) While Black Plague doesn't have a kitchen they have guest food trucks. That evening we had okay pizza with delicious beer. We will go back for sure but we will check to see what food truck is there that day. read more

We had a Yelp "Brewventure" here recently, but I've been to Black Plague at least one time before. We loved it both times. First time was during a heat wave in Oceanside and considering B.P. is inside a warehouse, there isn't any air-conditioning per se, or at least if there was one it wasn't turned on. They did have a huge industrial fan that felt good but I'd say they need a couple more. The second time we came it was in the high 60's and perfect inside. We got there early to beat the Yelp rush, and ordered our beers and tacos (from the El Cevichito taco truck outside) before there were any lines. Black Plague has a nice mixture of beers - from light to dark. My favorite is the Scotch Ale which is around 7.9% ABV I believe; so strong and so tasty. I also like the "Atra Mors" Red Ale which hovers around 9% ABV. Those are my favorites. My wife really liked the "Tropicus" which is a blend of two other beers: the 1347 Mango and Pineapple IPAs. The space inside is huge. Plenty of restrooms and tons of seating with lots of interesting trinkets and weird knick-knacks scattered around (like a full-size skeleton that usually sits at the bar). They also have a copper strip running along the middle of the bar area which is always ice-cold and made to keep your beers chilled. Great idea and one that every other brewery in SD should implement! In fact, I need to install one in my house somewhere. Maybe the kitchen island? This is one of my new favorite breweries for sure! I love the concept and dark decor! You can tell no detail was left behind. I came here on a yelp event night to give their flavored IPAs a try. My husband tried their classic one and it was the perfect IPA. You receive a take home glass with a pint full for $10 and the glass has gold writing which I thought was cool. The whole space is large with plenty of tables. It looked like they even had a small stage set up too. They have board games to play too. Friendly bartenders too! Really enjoyed my initial visit to this brewery. I stopped in on Super Bowl Sunday to catch the game. They had partnered with a great food experience but the name slips me. Super spacious environment with friendly people. Game was in a huge projector with great audio. Beer was fabulous. I tried as many as I could and still make it home. I can really say which was my favorite but I definitely didn't go wrong with any of them. I will say not having a kitchen kinda burned me because I wanted some wings or fries or something beside the main BBQ partner. Also no wait staff , I assume because the bar was so busy. So I had to keep getting up to get beer. That wasn't ideal. However, if you haven't been here you should go soon. And plan to stay a while and drink some delicious beer. And buy some to take home you won't be disappointed. read more

Best place to get a beer, if you like IPA. If you're not a huge IPA person you could get one of their stouts or other ales. Really anything off of the menu is amazing. The atmosphere of BP is amazing, a very chilled spot, no issues with bringing your dogs or kids during the day or evening.
