This bar is a pretty good time. It's always very packed so I guess that's a good sign! Once you are able to get to the bar and actually get a drink, the upstairs has a little more room, we were able to get a table so that was cool. Black Friar is a great place to get some food, drinks, and chill. The outdoor area is super cute laced with fire places and lights. The atmosphere is perfect with a good music in the background not blaring super loud so you can enjoy the tunes and the company you're with. The food is good, beer selection could be greater but they have some good local options. A good place to go on a night that you want to get out but have a more chill evening. read more

Tried this place out during HH yesterday (Wednesday) and it was greatness! We hung out at the bar in the dark interior, leaving the patio to the smokers and such. The beer selection was quite eclectic...and they have some interesting beer cocktails, as well. I was *trying* to not hit it too hard as I had a long night ahead of me, and mostly pulled it off...but it wasn't easy. We tried the Hatch Queso and it was quite tasty! The salsa was okay, but I wouldn't put it in (or even close to) the "don't miss" category. Then I moved on to the Beef Burger, with cheese and bacon. It was definitely top notch! I really enjoyed it. I was extremely tempted to go for the Hatch Queso burger, but thought that would be a bit overboard given the earlier consumption of said queso. Another thing worth mentioning were the fries...they rocked! They were much better than I expected, given their generally nondescript appearance. They were crispy on the outside, light on the inside, and perfectly seasoned....they were a nice surprise! Lastly, the service was great...our bartendress was fan-damn-tastic! I can't speak to the table service, but the bar service rocked. I will definitely be back...and hopefully that will happen fairly soon. read more

Duh !!! Who doesn't like this place. The music is good, DJ has a very good taste. The atmosphere is perfectly great. And Mollie, the bartender, is the BOMB !!! She could mix any drinks, and any shots. And they are all great. Anytime I was there, I had to get Uber home. Definitely it is a crazily fun place to hang out.... While I'm a huge fan of pubs and dive bars, this place doesn't QUITE fit the bill of either. It tries to be a pub with it's decor and Guinness heavy mixed drinks (Dark n Tan, Black Velvet, etc), but the clientele scream "FRAT HOUSE" the moment you step in. Maybe it was because we came and it was Labor Day, but all of the waitresses were dressed in neon/sparkly short shorts and slightly revealing tops. Definitely not the ambiance I was going for, but the other men in the joint seemed to dig it. I did really like that they had the new Franconia Champagne Ale that I'd been wanting to try for a decent price in pints ($6). I will also give them credit where credit is due to their food: My Fish n Chips were off the HOOK! (Get it? Fish, hook? Off? Ahhhhhhh I kill myself) Jokes aside, they were crisp, meaty, and had some serious flavor without the lemon juice that I was pouring over it. I'd come back here alone JUST for that. They also have these mayo dips (three different flavors, chipotle, tarragon, and bourbon) for the "Frites" (aka skinny fries) side if you order that, but I got my "chips" (aka steak fries) swapped out for this. This is seriously the right way to go. Hashem D. had the Avocado-Chipotle Burger, which was sizeable and tasty. Situated right on the corner of Routh and McKinney, this place is a must stop for a group bouncing around uptown. It's also a good place to take people from out of town. The pub has a great beer selection and always brings in an attrative crowd. As mentioned in other reviews, this place has the same owners as Idle Rich and Renfield's Corner. Of the three, Black Friar's is the most upbeat and lively. There are two stories with plenty of patio space on both. I also like that there is a bar on the first floor, second floor, and outside pation on the first floor, so getting a drink is not that difficult. While it's definitely one of the better places to visit on weekends, this pub is also good to go to during the week. Whether you want to get a drink for happy hour after work or go out with your friends on the weekend, there really isn't a bad time to go to Balck Friar. read more

I frequent Black Friar a lot and have no idea why it never occurred to me to write a review, but finally here I am. I love Black Friar 3/4 of the year. The patio is awesome at night or at brunch, but the Texas heat can melt the make up off my face quicker than I can get my first drink in the middle of summer. It is usually pretty crowded and seating can be hard to find at night, so if you can't handle standing in heals make sure to wear flats. When I've got a great patio, good people, and good booze, I've got nothing but love. read more

The beer selection is not bad- they even offer european-style combos like "Black and Tan" which I used to drink while in the UK. The food is pretty good - I enjoyed my maple-grilled chicken sandwich and tobacco onion strings. My friend enjoyed her vegetarian pot pie. But the menu is pretty much identical to the one at the Idle Rich Pub across the street (because they have the same owners). And according to my friend, the food at the Idle Rich is better, especially If you like veggie burgers (the Idle Rich Pub handmakes their patties, and the Black Friar menu says it uses a brand burger patty). The reason I give this place two stars is because if you're not hanging out on the patio (which is the best part of their space), the inside of the pub is simply too dark at night. I was sitting across from a friend in a 2 person booth and I was leaning over the table the whole time just so I could see her and feel engaged in our conversation. Since the Idle Rich Pub is literally across the street, carries almost the same beer and food selection at the same prices, has more light in its space, and has slightly better food, I don't see why I would come back here. read more

I came here the other night with a friend and I decided to experiment with beer. I had a Czechvar first, which was nice. Then, I ordered a Newcastle, and it was even nicer. Mini Chicken Avocado Sandwiches - Omg these are so good! The sauce on the bun is spicy, so get ready for a pleasant surprise. Everything about these mini sandwiches are wonderful. Chicken Quesadillas - Who would have thought that quesadillas at a bar would taste good? Well, at my waitress' recommendation, I ordered these and was shocked at how great they were. I love the patio. The inside (upstairs and downstairs) areas are fab too. At night, you can get a nice view of Dallas upstairs on the patio. The service here is great! I've walked by on a Saturday night before, and there were waaaaay more humans there than I felt like wading through. Saturday afternoon, however, we had the place practically to ourselves, and it was delightful. The bill can get a little steep pretty quickly here, so mind the menu. Having lived in Dallas for 11 years and moving back to Tulsa, I really appreciate a place like this. The patio is really nice, it was a bit chilly outside, but the heaters and fire pit helped keep it warm. My first drink was a Jack/Coke. I love a strong drink and this did not disappoint. My friend and I split a burger, Avocado Chipolte Burger with Tabasco Onion Strips. Awesome! Highly recommend. I did not pay the tab, so I can not tell you the prices. The biggest drawback was the choice of seating. Picnic tables do not allow for larger groups like ours to sit comfortably. There were 7 of us and the large table in the middle was taken, but we made do. read more

I checked out Black Friar a couple weeks ago and had a great time. There is a large outdoor seating area with lamps and heaters, which is perfect for cold evenings like the one when I visited. They have a bar inside you can order from, but waitresses also frequent the tables, which was nice because the line at the bar can get a little long. The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced and they have quite a selection of local beers. I will definitely make my way back here. read more

I stopped by Black Friar during an impromptu uptown pub crawl to enjoy some patio time and beautiful 75 degree weather. Three words: Blood. Orange. Lemonade. So refreshing and not too sweet, it completely hit the spot! After checking out their extensive (and uber veggie-friendly) menu, I completely regretted eating mediocre food from the barely open Nodding Donkey beforehand. This time a friend and I were out for pub food - I wanted a burger and onion rings... thought I'd give the McKinney strip a try as it was too late for my fav spot and was afraid of the over flow of people tired of dinner with daddy so out drinking - figured there was a spot on Oaklawn I could always hit! The first time I came to Black Friar Pub it was the worst experience. Never been to a bar that crowded were drinks were too much and the people were rude. This was a couple of years ago. I returned again last night and had a completely different experience. I could actually walk around the place! I spent the majority of the night on the patio and the waitress was more than willing to bring me another drink anytime I was getting low. The down side to this place is the parking. Which can be said of any place in Uptown. But it was an overall good experience. I don't venture into Uptown that often but if someone invites me to this place I won't huff at the idea. read more

This one is going to be short and sweet: went for Saturday Brunch and were very happy with our dishes. The wife-unit had short-rib eggs benedict (and the potato hash that comes with it) and I had the brunch bread pudding (which isn't as strange as it might sound... think of it kinda like a derivative of french toast). We both really enjoyed our meals. I was worried that the bread pudding whiskey sauce might be overpowering with whiskey, but I was pleased that it instead was a nice mixture of buttery sweetness with a little whiskey. Came to Dallas for a business trip from Los Angeles and lucky my best friend now lives in Dallas. I asked him to bring me to a local Dallas joint and this was the spot. Okay the crowd is a bit hipster for this Cali gal but the food was great (tried the bbq burger and fries), ambiance and drinks hit the spot after a long day at work. What to say about the Black Friar? It's the essence of what I think a Pub should be... and trust me.. a lot of places get it wrong. The decor is dark and woody, the atmosphere is laid back, chill people and SUPER cool bartenders. Only downside is that the balcony is small. [On that note, they are currently working on building a second level, so the balcony being small is a temporary issue]. I felt like I was at a frat house, but without the broken windows, chair on the lawn, and people jumping off the roof. It was a chill night, and we'll definitely be back soon! The bartenders were making some great drinks... started off with my fav. pinnacle whip and orange juice with a splash of sprite. Haven't had it? I have to admit that I have only had drinks here and I am a bit tentative in giving it 4 stars. I am doing so because the menu includes a cheese plate which I think is cool and not too many pubs do that. Having just returned from England I can attest that cheese plates are huge over there, so the touch of authenticity is appreciated. The beer selection is ok but does not match the choices of Idle Rich Pub across the street. The service was prompt and courteous. The inside (on a hot day) was packed and extremely loud with sorority types so we sat outside on the spacious patio where the smokers sit. We ended up leaving before we wanted to because of the smokers. Given a choice I would prefer Idle Rich Pub, but this place seems perfectly ok for a drink. read more

When you're bar hopping in Uptown Dallas your options are somewhat limited...well from a visitor's point of view when you started at a certain location. Never been here during the day or tried the food. But on occasion when we find outselves out in Uptown, this is always in our rotation of stops. It's a big two story house bar/pub so even with all the people and the crowding, we can usually find ourselves a corner to hang out in to drink. The bartenders are average, but should take that as a compliment considering they're usually not the friendliest in that area. I will give them the benefit of the doubt due to that they are always slammed and just trying to pump out drinks asap. It doesn't give much room for customer service. Granted we always enjoy coming here. Beers are around $5 and up. Line is never long to get in. Nice openness on the bottom patio and top balcony. Good location in terms of walking distance to bar hop across to Trophy Room or short walk to Kung Fu or Social House. read more

One of my favs and go-to places in Uptown. One of the best if not THE BEST patios on McKinney and the perfect place for a cocktail after work. I actually really love the food there, too, and on this occasion, scarfed a grilled-chicken sandwich, fries and vodka soda all in a matter of minutes. I had been to Happy Hour at a different place with tiny appetizers... not enough to soak up the enormous amounts of vodka already in my system.
