What a fun spot! The atmosphere is really cool. I couldn't help but take a ton of pictures inside and out. We went to the upstairs bar for brunch. Big kudos to the entire staff at Black Friar! On a busy Saturday night, my out of town buddy lost his wallet. We figured that out after we had already ubered home. We came back and got there right as they were closing. We told the guy at the entrance what had happened and he jumped right into action. He radioed in with my friends name and info and even did some searching himself. Less than 5 min later we had his wallet, but discovered his card was missing. The door guy let us in to the bar temporarily to go see if he had forgotten to close out. Turns out that's exactly what happened. We stumble upon this pub while walking McKinney avenue on an empty stomach. I never expect a bar to serve food that will keep me coming back. This small find was an incredible one. The fish and chips is spectacular! The burger is exceptional! We came back a second time just to see if it was a random good day for the kitchen. It wasn't! This kitchen serves up a great meal! Very nice bar in uptown. I came here with my friends and got some foods and drinks. It was Taco Thursday so we got Pork, Shrimp, Fish, and Brisket tacos, $3.4 each and was very good, tasty and decent size of potion. People were very nice friendly, we especially love its atmosphere, pretty fireplace at the front yard. Only one concern is the parking space, they have their own space but little bit difficult to get in due to the small gate. read more

Blackfriar Pub is my go-to for drinks in Uptown. I've brought dates, friends, siblings, whoever here and never been disappointed. The drink menu is awesome and the beers are cheaper than anywhere else in Uptown. The ambiance is super cute with sparkling Christmas lights out on the patio! Late night snack? My fave is the chicken nachos -- awesome every time. This is my "local bar" and I wouldn't have it any other way. read more

Food is excellent. They go above what normal bar food is without creating gimmicky stuff that looks cool on Instagram but tastes bland.

The Black Friar offers some good food selections, it's kinda small but I like having the intimate indoors area, the outside is great too. Small patio tables along with the HUGE outdoor tables that are great for large groups. They even have a fire pit for those chilly nights. I've had many of the menu items but my favorite has to be the Chipotle Avocado Chicken Sandwich. I'd recommend getting the chipotle on the side, though cuz it's kinda hot at times. They have some great Mexican Martini's and a few rotating drafts which is good if you like to try something new now and again. If you're a domestic kinda person the beers are pretty cheap at $3.50 ea. During the day it's park yourself, but at night it's valet only. Which the one star is subtracted because my sister and I tried to go once and they actually said 'the lot is full, can you drive over and park at the Idle Rich?'. Which in my opinion is kinda crappy. All in all I've yet to have bad service or bad food, they're always pretty on top of their game. read more

As I've gotten older, I've become somewhat of a grouch when it comes to bars. Especially around the McKinney area. Is it going to be crowded? Will I be cold/hot? Drinks good? Will I be able to find a seat? Will the bar be filled with douchelords and twitties? All these things give me anxiety and I hate it. So when the Man Piece told me he was going there for HH after work, I broke out in a nervous sweat. Happy Hour on a Friday? That's the WORST or the best...whatevs. So anyway, I decide I'm gonna make this work. Tim Gunn would be proud. I arrive around 6pm and low and behold, what do I find? Heat lamps on the patio. Check. Nice big table on said patio my friends snagged. Check. Lovely waitress. Check. Amazeballs people watching? Double check. I sat down at the great table, ordered a Sangria and found myself truly having a good time. Anxiety who? There's this beer that I love and I NEVER remember the name. I mean ever, I can't even remember it now. So when I told the waitress it was a similar to an ale, came in a short stoutly glass and had a high % of alcohol content, she smiled and said, "I have an idea, hang on I'll be back" (and this was ALL the info I gave her). Low and behold about 3 minutes later she arrived with my beer, I took a sip, saw angels and then gave her a hug. Not really, but I thought about it. By the time we left....oh, 3 hours later. The bar was packed. So I would definitely suggest getting there early for HH. I know I got lucky that my friends got there and snagged a table, but I know this is not always the case. Black Friar has eased the crazies in me and I look forward to my beer in the future, whatever the name is. read more

I made a very serious promise to my friends that frequent Uptown bars the other day - I will never go to Black Friar Pub again on a Friday or Saturday night. Maybe I am old. Maybe I am intolerant. Maybe both...but I have simply had enough of SMU Graduate Barbie and SMU Graduate Ken for one lifetime. Now that my irrational rant is out of the way, I can tell you what's good about the place. The food is good - it's nearly the same as Idle Rich across the street (see above promise, as it includes Idle Rich as well.) I like the Chipotle Burger and the sandwiches. I like how they have holiday drinks like Irish Coffee and Mulled Wine. I have always had decent service from nice waitresses that have never screwed up my tab. I even like the outdoor patio. There is a valet, and you pretty much just have to bite the bullet and do it. On weeknights, I am sure I will end up there again sometime. But I repeat, if you don't really like the whole uptown crowd thing and you aren't in your early to mid 20s....I suggest steering clear on weekend nights after around 9 pm. Go to the Dubliner or Meridian Room, where you can still get great food, great service and enjoy the people around you a little bit more. read more

I think this is my first one star review and without a doubt my shortest. I tend to review things I like, because it's a good use of my time. I don't like Blackfriar. It's a conglomeration of good 'ole boys (emphasis on boys) wearing baseball caps and three whiskers it took them a month to grow - and the girls who love them. These creatures swarm the bar and make the wait not only impossible - but unbearable - as you can't help but overhear conversation that makes you go into convulsions. Of pain. It takes a lot for me to get to Uptown and go anywhere, but last night my friend was having a 30th birthday and she wanted to go to Blackfriar so that's where I ended up. Alright, let me break it down for ya. The patio is a decent size and it was packed on a Wednesday at 7pm probably because the weather was so nice. I walk into the patio area and found myself being ogled by every guy around. I am all about getting checked out but having EVERYONE turn around and just look me up and down made me feel like perhaps I forgot to put on pants or something? I found my friends on the more isolated tables on the patio and to the left. I was glad we were off to the side because I didn't want to sit where all the other people were! Although if you are in the mood to hunt for douchebags and Barbies, they are both here in full force...but "slummin it" in their Tshirts and shorts or sundresses! HA! I can't complain about the drinks. They had the sweet tea vodka that they mix with some peachy fizzy soda and it was tasteeeey. They also had some very strong vodka sodas. I was pleased with this and also with the waitress. (note: also a large beer selection for you beer drinkers.) I got the sliders (they have a different name on the menu but I cannot remember it). Four burgers that had absolutely NO flavor whatsoever. All they did was soak up the booze and were barely worth the calories. Normally I would eat all four mini burgers but I only ate two of them and wasn't tempted to finish the rest. The shoestring fries kind of looked like McDonald's fries but were limp, greasy, and not freakin salty enough. I guess I need to try something else next time because they have an extensive menu...but really, there isn't going to be a next time and we all know it! I didn't get to go inside and check the decor since it was such a nice evening. I mean, really, honestly, there are 100 better bars in Dallas. Even their sister places Old Monk and Dubliner are 100 times better than this place. In my mind this is a 2 or 2.5 type place and somewhere I would NEVER go on the weekend. But I am going to give a generous 3 star for the strong drinks, the friendly waitress, and the decent patio on a lovely Wednesday night. read more

We were walking around exploring Uptown and this place caught my eye so i dragged everyone with me to check it out.. good choice by yours truly! We sat outside since the weather was nice and really enjoyed the whole patio vibe. We went on a Sunday so we had a choice from the regular full menu along with their Sunday brunch specials. I went with the nachos and they bomb! I love nachos but i really love when restaurant make the big chips into an individual nacho for you...does that make sense?! lol Well anyway, this place does that with their nachos...so its not a heap of chips on a good plate size full of well crafted "individual nacho" bites. I finished the whole damn plate and didn't share one. My black and tans were delicious as always... my other company ate off of the Sunday special menu and really enjoyed their breakfast burritos and tacos.. fyi the breakfast burrito is HUGE! read more

I've been lucky enough to experience this place in all it's different faces. I have yet to be let down. I've been during the middle of the day with my love at the time, found a small booth inside the dark cozy pub and just chatted, drank and ate the afternoon away...it was great. I had the burger sliders....scrumptious, and he had the turkey burger which I think was only OK....but the cozy atmosphere made for a perfect afternoon. The weather nice? Head out there for an afternoon of patio lounging. It's HUGE and has a bar out there so you don't always have to run inside....POINT. Open air during patio season is a BIG OLE kudos. I've also been on those Friday and Saturday nights when the air is PERFECT for a patio, and the place is jam packed with all the fun Dallas socialites. The amazing patio is honestly enough for me to wanna hang out for hours and watch the crowd grow and buzz, and the inside is just as cool...very dark and personal. The staff keeps up with the ridiculous crowd.....DOUBLE POINT. Late Sunday afternoon has to be my favorite though. After a LONG boozefest on the lake, we headed to relax and try to wind down....grabbed a table on their beloved patio. Actually have never eaten here until today. Some buddies and I went here for Happy Hour and had some appeteezers. Nothing special foodwise. I usually come here at night to do a little partying. Everytime I come here these things are always consistent: 1.) This place brings the HEAT. If you are interested in females, there is always a strong showing. 2.) Well drinks are pretty potent. 3.) I give this place 4 stars based SOLELY on the daytime atmosphere. If we're talking about night time spots, bring this rating down to a 1 and click off the page immediately. During the sun light hours, the Black Friar Pub is great. HUGE patio, lots of sitting, sort of elevated off the street which makes it different. The daytime atmosphere is really laid back and friendly, and you have an overwhelming sense of "I got nowhere to be but here." The night time scene is a totally different idea that I won't even get into it. The indoor space is way too small to ever be comfortable and the patio is usually so packed, you can't move. But daytime + Friar + beer + their queso = YES. read more

This place gets CROWDED! Man, oh man alive. It's like pulling teeth to get a table outside on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The last time I went to Black Friar was a Thursday night, and fortunately, we were meeting people who had a table, but our crowd quickly overtook the available seats. Standing room only, no bueno. They offer your typical bar food. We ended up getting the beef quesadillas, chicken quesadillas, and the veggie burger. The veggie burger was really quite good but it wasn't steaming hot when it arrived, and the same could be said about the quesadillas. I liked the beef quesadillas better than the chicken. For all three, I paid $26... not bad! They have several beers on draft and offer more beer in bottles. It was kind of difficult to get our waitress's attention, though, probably because of the large crowd on the patio. Valet is $5 at the drop, which I'm not really into. I personally think that valet at establishments should be free to patrons, at least. I will probably go back, mainly because it's convenient but mostly because it's a watering hole. read more

Then I realized that (as Van explains) the pub was formerly occupied by Tecole. Ohhhhh... Also, the few times that I've been there, the service wasn't that great. I realize it's McKinney. I realize the crowd is just "hoppin'." But you can come and check on us occasionally when we're seated in your section. Really. The selection is decent - again, though...ANYwhere in Dallas. And, let's see. The remaining star-grade comes off because the place just failed to impress me, period. Yeah, the patio was great. Yeah, my wine was good (so are the priest collars). I guess I'm feeling a little snobby today. OH -- I did really appreciate the wood panels inside - I guess they brought these in from a church or something? So, points for the decor. The Baja fish and fried chicken tacos were amazing! Black Friar has a great selection of beers and cocktails. I had a couple of local Dallas IPA's that were recommended by our waitress, while my partner tried their sangria. All were very good and did not disappoint in a hot Texas summer evening. Their patio is very large and has some nice shade while providing the opportunity to overlook the people on the streets. Great atmosphere and excellent service. Highly recommend anyone looking for a low key bar with great food and good selection of drinks. read more

Short review. Luved this place. Had a Stella or two across the street at Idle Rich (which we also LUV) and walked across the street to Black Friar to try a new place for the first time. On a Sunday early afternoon, it was a cool, quiet atmosphere; dark woods, decorative ceilings like in a Cathedral, friendly service and laid back. Our server was awesome, always there, and we enjoyed the comfy booth inside. Patio looks great for better cooler weather with the misters. Didn't try the food, but menu is just like Idle Rich, so next time; saw some dishes being served that look pretty delish. Didn't realize it is part of the group of The Monk, Idle Rich and I think, one other. So have discovered another place for a kick back, have a drink or two, and enjoy the company. Great place !!!!! Very cool atmosphere! We went when it was raining so we couldn't utilize the outdoor spaces which to me were the biggest selling points. They had very nice outdoor beer garden areas with fire pits and lots of seating. The inside was smaller hence why the out door areas were the highlights. It's slower during the week. I like booze--there I said it. It's very true. But I also like cheese and ribs, and that's where Black Friar Pub went above the standard three-star-cause-they-got-booze mark. They have the most amazing spare rib quesadillas and cheese board selection I've had in a pub. The food was really good. And you know when the bartenders obviously have a private joke going on--they also let me in on the joke so I almost felt like I was somebody important. If you were there that night, then yes, we were mocking you from the bar. The bartender-Alan-was a hoot! Had a great time. I will most certainly be back. read more

Black Friar is a great, casual spot with a large patio, a good selection of beer, and delicious pub food. One of my favorite thing about Black Friar is that it's very vegetarian-friendly. They've got a good veggie burger. They've also got a wonderful vegetarian reuben sandwich (made with portabella mushrooms). And, recently, I tried the vegetarian mushroom and sweet leek pie, which is creamy and indulgent and completely delicious. The fries are great as well, especially with the trio of dipping sauces that are included if you order the "frites" as a side (if you're not ordering them separately, you can still request the sauces on the side). I'm not really much of a beer drinker, but my friends that are enjoy the selection here. And, I like that they have Franconia hefeweizen, which is quite tasty and is made just up the road in McKinney. The patio is nice and big, but it can get really loud. Then again, what pub doesn't have that issue? And, the crowd is pretty laid back for Uptown (although it can get a bit frat-boy heavy at times). read more

I'm giving my review based on weeknight happy hour or brunch/linner on the patio on the weekend. FAIR WARNING: Complete cluster on Friday and Saturday nights. And there will be Ed Hardy appearances. Unless you get there early and snag a table, you may have trouble getting drinks, and you will probably not enjoy everything black friar has to offer. Now, I have a soft spot for this place. It was one of the first bars I frequented when I first moved to Dallas and I LOVE the patio. They've added heaters and a fireplace over the years, only improving it. Also love the tiki bar outside so you don't have to wait at the inside bar, if you are out on the patio. The food is better than expected: the cheese trays, chicken sandwich, and loaded cheese fries are my recs. Drinks? Happy hour is only $1 off and I've run a few pretty high tabs, but the menu is extensive and has great beer options. Try the summer beer or ice pick for a refresher. read more

This past weekend I went to visit this former stomping ground of mine and was extremely surprised by the enclosed porch on the lower level and a brand spanking new upper level! Two nights eating here on our trip, and we're a health-focused, IPA loving couple! Plenty of good beer available, including local drafts, which is awesome for the traveling beer enthusiasts. First night: Deep Ellum IPAs paired with sharing both the chicken and short rib sliders. Decided to go with the frites (little bit out of normal for us, but we treated ourselves), and the three flavored mayos were fantastic! Second night: He had the tossed salad, I had the avocado burger, no cheese or bun. All delicious! Service: both nights the waitresses were friendly and great!
