Underrated for brunch. When people suggest brunch places in Uptown it's usually Social House, Public School, State & Allen, BREADWINNERS... (some of these overrated - I'll let you decide which) never have I heard Black Friar. First, there was no wait, but it was also close to 1pm. Their menu options don't disappoint and their brunch drink specials are good too ($10 for a mimosa carafe!) I got a single red wine sangria ($3) and the Chicken Biscuits and Gravy ($9). This dish would run $11+ at other places. Normally not a big biscuits person, but this was good!! The fried chicken was perfect and I was satisfied at the end of it. I probably would skip the brunch tacos because the portion looked small... you only get 2 tacos. Personally think you should get at least 3. Would come back again! read more

I like it..its an Irish smack dab downtown Dallas Tx!!! Its an upscale, upbeat bar with a great patio for the summer and a nice upstairs bar for a chilly winter afternoon. I visit on vacation and have not had a bad experience with the staff. My sister likes the cheese plate. It is for the young and the young at heart tho come the late evening hours. Nice little pub. When you pull into the parking lot they do offer valet. The main floor is pretty dark but when you're upstairs it's not too bad. And I feel like it more lively on the second floor. When we went there was plenty of seating inside and out on the patio. Servers are friendly and the beers and drinks are reasonably price. read more

I love the atmosphere here. It's very unique and old fashioned. I love the antiquated look. I have eaten appetizers here in a few occasions and was never disappointed. They also carry the seasonal Sweetwater Triple Tail which is hands down my favorite beer. However, the most recent time we stopped in they had rap music blasting so loud that I could barely hear my date. If you are looking for a good bar near Hotel Zaza then The Black Friar certainly fits the bill. If you like to drink I'm told they have quite a good selection, if like me you just travel with those that like to drink then they'll be happy and you won't be disappointed with the food. The burgers here are good and I've never had a bad meal. The skinny fires are particular good if you are so inclined and the wait staff are always very friendly even if you show up with a large crowd. On this business trip I made my second trip to The Black Friar and it did not disappoint. read more

She brought out or tab without even asking if we were interested in another drink or another food item. I felt as if she just wanted us out there since the very beginning. I'm not trying to bring race into this issue, but is it because we weren't white? I am very disappointed in the service and experience. I will not recommend this place to ANYONE. This is the perfect place to have Saturday brunch. First of all, we had a $100 gift card to spend, we completely gorged ourselves, and we barely used even half of it! So that alone tells you it's a great deal. Second of all, at 1 PM on a Saturday we basically had the whole upstairs patio to ourselves. That is totally unheard of in Uptown. At most places there's a huge wait and you're yelling to hear yourself over the crowds, but here it was the most relaxing and intimate environment. And finally, the service was stellar--just the right amount of attentiveness without being overbearing. We sat at a wooden booth on the upstairs patio, with a great view of Uptown and also the incredible construction pit next door (seriously really interesting to look at). We started with a carafe of mimosas, which as part of their 4th of July weekend special was only $7 (great deal). The mimosas were delicious!! For our food we ordered the veggie nachos with guacamole, the fish tacos, and the Red House Salad minus the salami. Everything was really great, even better than we expected. We were expecting pretty standard pub food, but this was really outstanding. As the meal continued we also ordered a carafe of sparkling wine sangria ($9) and a frozen moscow mule to share ($8). Although Black Friar has the same frat-boy-esque crowd as Idle Rich across the street, the crowd here doesn't have quite the same snootiness. The people here are a lot nicer and a bit more laid-back. On a recent visit, one guy had to climb over my chair to get through because it was so crowded, but he wasn't sleazy about it, and we had a good laugh. His friend then politely tried to help me move my chair so that he wouldn't have to pull the same move. The staff is also a ton nicer here than at Idle Rich. When we tried to order food without realizing the Black Friar kitchen had already closed, the waitress was very polite about correcting us and even took the time to list some suggestions for places that might still be serving food. She wasn't too busy to stop and help us, and she didn't act the least bit put out. The atmosphere at Black Friar is fantastic. The wood paneling inside is cozy on a cold winter night, and the patio is great fun on a warm summer night. I like it best here in the early hours of the morning, when the crowds are starting to thin out. It's a great place to end an evening. Hint: valet is not your only option! Park on one of the smaller side streets near Ginger Man, and then walk to McKinney. It's really not that far, and parking is surprisingly easy on those streets. read more

Why have I never been here before now???? Black Friar is my new go to spot for anytime I'm on McKinney avenue. Everyone is extremely friendly, the drinks are delicious, and there is such great energy from entire place. Lit up attractively from the outside, you are instantly drawn in by the good music playing on the patio, which is the main star of the bar. There is an interior area upstairs and downstairs, but both are quite small; as well as the upstairs patio with limited seating. No problem, though, as the lower patio with heaters for the cold and misters for the Texas heat to keep patrons comfortable no matter the conditions. Seating is plentiful, and waitresses make it so you just need your credit card and thirst to have a great time! I cannot wait to come back here! read more

I've been here a few times with friends and I like it. The staff is super nice and friendly. Mostly guys in the crowd here and the times I've been here it's a late to 20 to mid 30s crowd. Wished it was bigger so you have to get here early if you want a seat at the bar. There is outdoor seating is when it's warm - it's awesome. So here is the breakdown: Hot drinks like Irish Coffe are $7. Draft beets for the most part run $5. Bottled beers range from $5-17 depending on what you order. Sundays they have brunch from noon-4pm serving things like Eggs Benedict and bottomless Mimosas for $14. This seems like a really great neighborhood bar on McKinney and my opinion is most pubs are fab. Food: I ordered the salad with their lemon chicken. It was awesome. I believe it was one of the best salads I had in awhile. We also ordered the cheese sticks which were brea and whiskey cheddar. Those were great too. They have a good menu to choose from. If you don't feel like eating a burger they have a variety of cheese boards to choose from. They definitely get an A for the food. While there is no pool table and only 1 dartboard I think you'd enjoy this place because it's just good to hang out. New to Dallas. Met some friends here to experience this "Uptown" area that everyone talks about. Did valet and it was $5. I come from California and I had to ask again how much it was because $5 is what you tip those folks back home. Our ID's were checked and it was packed inside, both upstairs and downstairs. Luckily my friend claimed a table so we didn't have to stand around. Drinks here are cheap. Well, cheap for my girlfriend and I. Not so much our friends who know this area well. A round of drinks for 4 people for what it would cost for 1 and a half drinks at a similar bar in California? I hate comparing things, but this still amazes me. You and your friends can have a great time for less than $30 a person. Less to just enjoy. Downside was the DJ had a turntable, but it was sounding like an iPod with no transitions. I stumbled upon this bar on a recent bar crawl and was pleasantly surprised. I've never heard of the Black Friar but is an amazing place with lots of atmosphere and fantastic service. Our waitress was so friendly and easy to talk to. We ended up ordering some food and everything we had tasted great. They also have my standard Guinness on tap as well a a variety of other great beers. We sat at the outdoor patio and enjoyed the weather. The vibe here is easy going and fun. This has been one of my favorite bars so far in Dallas. I'm definitely coming back to the Black Friar! You should check this place out. read more
