I can't believe I had never been to Blanco Cafe until this past weekend. I spend a lot of time in San Antonio visiting family, and I love to eat. And Blanco Cafe has been around since 1974! But I'd never been until my grandfather requested it for dinner one night during my most recent visit. FYI There are a couple of restaurants called Blanco Cafe in San Antonio. This one is on Blanco Road, and it's been there for more than 50 years. It's known for its enchiladas, but it has a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner (they close at 7pm M-Sa and at 3pm on Su, so it's a place for an early dinner only). (They don't have alcohol either, so this isn't your spot for a margarita or beer with dinner.) The cafe is classic and comfortable. It's not fancy but has plenty of charm. People love it so there can be a little bit of a line outside, but it moves fast. We were a table of five and by the time I parked (there's a small lot behind the building and street parking), my family was already seated - and that was a Friday night around 6. Since they're known for their enchiladas, four of the five us got their enchilada plate. They're so classic - classic Tex-Mex enchiladas that is! Tex-Mex enchiladas start with tortillas dipped in a chile sauce (which is what makes them look so red). They're stuffed with gooey cheese and then topped with chile con carne and even more cheese. I can see why Blanco Cafe's enchiladas are so popular. They are classic, delicious, and so crave-able. Served with frijoles, rice, and wonderful flour tortillas, it's just a great, classic meal. I have zero complaints. But if you're not in the mood for enchiladas, they have a full menu with plenty of other items to choose from (and lunch specials Monday through Saturday). I didn't have room for their Fideo Loco, so I'm personally ordering that when I return. Blanco Cafe was a treat. The service was great. The restaurant has no frills but is comfortable and classic and charming. It's simply good. I know I'll be back because even my picky grandfather (he's 102, so his pickiness is understandable) loves it. I'm looking forward to returning! This is the second visit to this place recently. We arrived there at about 1 o'clock and we had to get on a waiting list. We were asked to wait outside and It was hot, over 90 degrees. After about 30 minutes we were called in. The dining room was full and they only had two waitresses working. It took a few minutes from the waitress to take our order, and we waited a few more minutes for our drinks. We ordered the enchilada plate because the reviews showed that they had the best in San Antonio. The enchiladas were not what we expected. We have definitely had much better enchiladas in San Antonio. The beans and rice were good. We definitely disliked the many flies that hovered over our table and had to be waiving our hands to scare them off of our food. The waitress only checked with us once and did not offer drink refills which we badly needed. In summary, the place did not live up to the reviews, and the whole eating experience wasn't pleasant. When I'm looking for classic San Antonio enchiladas, this is my go-to spot. Every time I've been, they are SLAMMED with a line out the door, but the food always comes out super quick and piping hot. I haven't tried anything other than their cheese enchiladas, but why would I?! This is what they're famous for. I love that it feels like a diner and the ladies working are always so so nice to me. I ordered the Carne Guisada, Eggs, and Potatoes plate. It was absolutely amazing! The Flour Tortilla here is absolutely delicious. Blanco Café opened near my work so I had to give it a try. I actually went three times in a two week period, so I'm going to summarize here. Only menu pictures this time! The restaurant is new, clean, with historical photos, artwork, and clear ties to San Antonio. Music is playing over the chatter, but not blaring. The first time I went on a Monday and got a water (comes with a slice of lemon) and the #1, cheese enchiladas with fajitas but it let's you request/sub in the carne guisada (more bang for your buck than getting the carne guisada plate itself). The food was standard Tex-Mex; they love their yellow cheese. Enchiladas were good as was the carne guisada. The beans & rice were just okay, but I added the green salsa to almost everything because I like my food spicy. I had wanted to try the chicken flautas or the chicken fried steak but those are only daily specials (Friday and Tuesday, respectively). I returned on the following Friday because my coworkers hadn't been yet and I wanted to try the chicken flautas plate. I firmly believe you can tell the caliber of a [Tex] Mexican restaurant based on their flautas! So I ordered them with a water w/lemon. Again, the rice & beans were bland, so I doused them in green salsa. For average folk, it was maybe a 4 or 5 out of 10 spicy level (3-4 for me). The chicken flautas were fine, but could have used more seasoning. The tortillas were fried well and nicely crunchy. The last visit occurred the following week on Tuesday for the chicken fried steak. It was a sizable steak with a good cover of gravy. I again doused my entree in green salsa, but I can't stress enough that I really like spicy and may not be necessary. I recall wishing it was crispier and maybe could use more seasoning, but that may have just been my subconscious comparing it to milanesa, haha! The sides were simple and fresh, the texas toast well buttered. This lunch spot gets the job done. Service is relatively fast and servers check in regularly, but arrive early to beat the lunch rush! I'm not sure if it's a tex-mex thing or just the restaurant establishing its chefs/recipes, but I think a heavier hand with the spices/seasonings would not hurt. With such a diverse menu and lack of Mexican spots close by (that don't have tourist prices), I have to cut them some slack. I've yet to try their breakfast tacos which is what this area is especially lacking. I hope to update and give them 5 stars in the future! read more

Is it the best in town? No, not by a longshot. Is it the best in town? Well in some other ways it kind of is the best in town. I love it here. The beans are smooth and creamy. The tortillas are delish. The enchiladas (I usually get verdes) are tangy with perfectly cooked chicken inside. It's a dive. The food is not "awesome." But it hits a spot like no other place does in San Antonio. And, as far as I know, no other restaurant makes Fiesta medals that are even half as cool as the ones that Blanco Cafe makes (an "Eddie" Fiesta medal? Yes, please!). Love it. By the way: This is a review for the Blanco Cafe in Beacon Hill. Not the one downtown. Some folks here are confusing them and I think this is why the ratings for the Blanco on Beacon Hill are worse than they should be (there's always a line out the door, so people seem to agree with and love it as much as I do). read more

Pros: neighborhood staple Cons: not sure why it's a neighborhood staple It's an older food establishment with diner seating and regular dining tables. One of the places that makes you feel the food has to be good because people aren't coming here for the decor or vibes. Sadly, that wasn't the case for me. I got three tacos: asada, carne guisada, and bean and cheese. Homemade flour tortillas, but very disappointed for a place that has signs about having award winning food and continues to have crowds of people on the weekend. Not sure what the rage is about. Carne guisada taco fell apart, was expected but still not a fan of how messy it became. It's stewed beef in brown gravy. What I did expect to receive was the cheese it came with, still no where to be found as seen in pic. Meat was wet from gravy, but the actual meat itself was dry once I bit into it. Carne asada taco was terrible. The meat was rubbery and no signs of any Maillard reaction. Asada means grill, but that meat was tough and terribly disappointing. Bean and cheese taco was the old reliable. But at this point after trying the others I couldn't care for it as much. Didn't mess this one up thankfully. Server who took my to go order was kind and courteous. Food did come out promptly but I would've waited a couple extra minutes if there was more attention to add the correct ingredients I was charged for. The chicken and cheese were my favs. The sauce was incredible. They give you two homemade flour tortillas as well, you will want something to sop up the remaining sauce. Those tortillas were great. Got around to trying out Blanco Cafe after being repeatedly warned we would spend a good amount of time waiting if we weren't early enough- I am pleased to report that at 11:30 my party of two waited ten minutes tops! Our server was very kind and prompt, in fact, it felt like zero time had passed between putting in our order to the food arriving at the table. The portions were as generous as they were flavorful! Knowing how good the food, service, and atmosphere is at the "Original Blanco Cafe on Fredericksburg Rd I can't imagine the other Blanco Cafe's would be any different. We always get smiles from the staff. You can't go wrong to bring family from out of town to Blanco Cafe. Their breakfast selections are delicious. Make sure you ask for their green sauce. The flour tortillas are excellent and make the meal. I have told friends about the food and have gone on my recommendation and thanked me for recommending it as a place to go especially for the breakfast/brunch selections.
