To eat what was probably the worst overall mexican food I have had. I dont write reviews often, but the disception was off the chains. Knowing how good the food, service, and atmosphere is at the "Original Blanco Cafe on Fredericksburg Rd I can't imagine the other Blanco Cafe's would be any different. We always get smiles from the staff. You can't go wrong to bring family from out of town to Blanco Cafe. Their breakfast selections are delicious. Make sure you ask for their green sauce. The flour tortillas are excellent and make the meal. I have told friends about the food and have gone on my recommendation and thanked me for recommending it as a place to go especially for the breakfast/brunch selections. Our server was on her ps & qs! She took care of us as fast as possible. They were out of barbacoa when we came so we were all sad to hear that! I resorted to the brisket plate, meat was dry and plate said potatoes not potato salad. I still ate the plate because it was delicious regardless of the things I would have changed. First of all, we have been going to Blanco Cafe for over 30 years at the original location. Gathered for my sister's birthday, and we were seated fairly quickly. Our waitress was fast, efficient, and friendly. Our taco came quickly and was hot and fresh. Very flavorful. I had the chicken puffy taco. I ordered guacamole but received it after I finished my taco. Our enchiladas were warm but not as tasty as I recall. The rice was bland and a little clumpy. The beans and tortillas were great. Waitress kept our drinks filled and checked on us frequently. Hopefully, this day was just an off day for the kitchen because the enchiladas are best served piping hot, and the rice should be fluffy and tasty. Might try again in a month or so. read more

Geeeeze. How disappointing. All I've ever heard is how this place is an absolute "staple" in San Antonio! A must go. Personally, I could take it or leave it. The place does have a nice "old fashioned" diner feel, though... This past Sunday, my wife ended up across the street at a new coffee shop, and decided to give this place a go. It was incredibly crowded - lunch hour had several people waiting outside. Fortunately, we were able to sit right away at a table near the front door. The first thing I noticed - THE HEAT. It was incredibly hot outside- and not much cooler inside. Yes, they had fans going, but it wasn't enough. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot which made the overall experience unenjoyable. Service was stretched thin, you could tell. One server took care of way too many tables which led to, I'm sure, longer than usual breaks between being seated, getting drinks, ordering, etc. Once we ordered, however, the food came out astonishingly fast, which was nice - because we wanted outta there due to the heat. I happened to notice they are known for their enchiladas, so that's what we both ordered. But, what came out was nothing different from any other enchilada I've had at any other regular ole tex-mex joint around town. I'm not quite sure how awards were won here. Let me comment on the good first. The service, is great. They're attentive and quick. In addition, the tortillas are superb. Now the not so good. My breakfast plate came with potatoes and beans, both cold and flavorless. The person with me, got a cold plate of carne guisada, rice, and beans. It was also a little warm inside, which was uncomfortable to go into after being in the 100+ degree weather. Not really impressed by this restaurant for a list of reasons. But up front; great tortillas, great rice, great carne guisada, great cheese enchiladas. On our visit we were served drinks and given menus, then our waitress never returned. I got up to find her, she said she forgot about us and then took our order. After food delivered never saw her again, had to once again hunt her down to get the check so we could leave. We were told they were short handed, so your experience may vary. I found it a bit pricy here, entrees seemed priced more in line with downtown touristy Mexican restaurants (think Mi Tierra Cafe) than a neighborhood place. And you pay for everything. In a city where the majority of Mexican restaurants drop free chips and salsa on your table as you sit down, here they are $4 if you order them. Need a to go box? That'll cost you. Want more than 2 oz of pico de gallo? $$. I think the only things we were not charged extra for were the napkins. Not impressed with the chorizo and bean taco; chorizo not drained and not enough bean so very greasy taco. Chicken in the chicken enchiladas was dried out, so not good like the cheese. A bit of sauce in there would help. The pico de gallo had no lime juice or cilantro, was just chunks of jalapeño, tomato, and onion. Over cooked and dried out frijoles too. This place was so close we could walk. It seems to be surrounded by cute shops which is an added bonus. We went for breakfast and it was delicious. I had a pepper and potato taco and added the egg. It was so filling and nothing was greasy. The coffee was good too. My service was great. The decor was quaint. I ordered the Deluxe Mexican Plate ($14.99) + 2 cups of water in to-go cups ($.75 each X 2 = $1.50). So, $16.49 X $1.0825 (tax) = $17.85. I was charged $18.85 ($1.00 over). I wanted to love Blanco Cafe, but the overall experience left many things to be desired. Plastered all over their restaurant is a reminder to wear your mask, lots of "no mask, no service" and other reminders. I normally don't mind this and I'm happy to comply, however, not ONE employee was wearing their mask correctly. This includes the cooks. Most masks didn't have their noses covered, while other employees wore their mask under their chin. I felt really uncomfortable with the amount of flies that were in the restaurant. When we came to the table, there was a dead fly on it. In all honesty, I'm not sure why we stayed. I ended up getting a combo enchilada plate. I will say that other reviews are correct. I thought the enchiladas were tasty... and the tortillas were divine. But every other part of my experience left something to be desired. In every way. Will not be back for sure. read more

I really enjoyed this place. Lots of character and solid food. Ambiance was solid too. Not a fancy place at all, but an old building with some great food coming out of the kitchen is what I like. And this was my first time having Mexican food in Texas. Not sure if that makes it Tex-Mex or not. This was my first time in Texas and I really wanted to try as many taco eateries and Mexican food as possible. But I can only eat so much. This was probably my favorite place out 3 or 4 places. Living in San Diego for 35 plus years and growing up eating homemade Mexican food on the daily, makes me somewhat of a legit eater of this type of food. And I was happy with what I ordered. Carne Guisado was new for me. As was the Puffy Taco Piccadillo. The soup was new to me as well-Fideo soup is what I believe it was called. Basically beans com carne with noodles. My buddy had the enchilada plate and J guess that's what they are known for. I Just wish I was hungrier so I could've tried more items on the menu. Now only if there was a place similar in SoCal.
