I don't even know where to start.... it was that great. I've not stopped talking or thinking about this experience. Every delicious bite, from the oysters, to roasted bone marrow, roasted mushroom soup, red fish, slow cooked beef ribs, on and on and on. Make sure to review the menu prior since it does change periodically. It's great to know that the ingredients change with the seasons and therefore the menu will follow suit. The quality and attention to detail is amazing. The delicious meal was made EVEN better by the welcoming and genuine service. We've dined at restaurants where the food was terrific but the service was so stiff it was uncomfortable....not here!! The service highlighted the meal! The GM Dorian Mills and executive chef Tony Hernandez made themselves completely available to all the patrons. What an amazing touch. I wanted to love this place. There is ample parking. The Hostesses were friendly and polite and as our table was not quite ready, seated us on a lovely outdoor patio to wait. The wait was short. We were taken to our table and our server was attentive and personable. Even though our drink orders had been taken, another server stopped by the table just to make sure we had been served. The ambiance was just right for a long awaited date night. We are not big eaters so husband ordered the Scallops and I had been jonesing for the Short ribs since I saw it on the menu online. On first presentation, our impressions were positive. While the scallop entree is smallish (only 3 scallops) the short rib entree was plentiful and husband always eats half of mine anyway! Unfortunately the downfall of the evening was when we tasted the food. While the carrot and the snap peas were fresh and delicious, the potatoes were so salty they made my mouth pucker and sadly, the short-ribs had braised past the point where they would have been succulent and juicy and had the texture (and flavor) of sawdust. Husband's scallops were likewise over salted and I noticed that while with the help of a lot of water, he finished my short ribs, he did not finish them. Very disappointing dinner! I will say, the butter cake dessert was good. The cake itself is very basic but the raspberry topping was really good. Overall, nice people, great atmosphere. Just don't eat here! read more

We spent our anniversary dinner here and are from out of state. This place has a lot going for it and we wanted to give it 4.5 stars but didn't have that option so we gave it a 4 for a few reasons. First off, the service was impeccable. Our food arrived quickly and we didn't do much waiting. Our server, Brett, immediately greeted us and wished us a happy anniversary. The food was amazing. My husband had the oyster sliders which he loved. He said he could 25 more because they weren't any bigger than a quarter. Brett explained each dish we ordered and how each item on the plate paired with each other. Really explained how best to eat our food. We loved hearing about each ingredient and why they were paired together. I had the arugula salad and it was the best salad I've ever had. Then we had the bone marrow with tenderloin tartare. I was a little intimidated by the tartare but it was delicious in flavor. The end of the bone marrow was a little cold but once we got to the center and the meat and marrow was warmer, it tasted much better. Then we ordered the duck foie gras. That was delicious. the foie gras tasted much better than we anticipated. The duck was so tender and the salad and accompaniments all came together nicely. The food was exceptional and out of our 4 anniversary dinners we would rate this the second best only behind the Idaho raise tomahawk steak we ordered at Prime Steakhouse on St. Thomas for our first anniversary. For dessert we had the butter cake which Brett talked us into as we were thinking of the chocolate cake The butter cake was delicious and all the components made it what it was. The cake alone probably not but all the accompaniments is what made it. The place was a nice and charming on the inside very rustic and slightly industrious. It was almost like eating on the side of an Italian restaurant with all the brick walls. The only drawback to this night was our table had some sort of sticky substance on it before we even sat down which I had to clean with my napkin and glass of water because it was sticking to my forearms which makes me believe they didn't do a good job of cleaning the table before setting it. The second was for the price of the food, we wish the servings were a little more. It took 5 plates of food to fill us up. But I guess we were paying for quality not quantity. Overall a fabulous 2-hour culinary experience and the second best on our marriage journey thus far. We would definitely return another time. read more

Me and my beautiful wife celebrated our 16th anniversary at Bliss. I can't say enough about the staff and cuisine. I made a reservation for Thursday evening, but showed up on Wed essay evening. The hostess was quick to make our date continue and immediately seated us. Our waitress was professional and personable. My wife had the scallops, and they were AMAZING! They were cooked to perfection. The best scallops we have ever eaten. I had the beef tenderloin, which was the perfect medium rare I had requested. See their menu for all of the sides with each meal. Have you ever had those moments thinking about what your last meal would be? From appetizer to dessert? Shoot even the bread that is served at your table... Well I have and I have to say Bliss is one of my top contenders. Not only is the atmosphere divine and intimate inside, but by-golly the outdoor patio will have you falling in love at first sight. It really does feel like your dining in another city. The service here is great and every time I have dined here it HAS ALWAYS been a splendid time. The staff is so accommodating and courteous and they're so mindful of your dietary needs. If you're a fan of charcuterie boards then you are required by the laws of meats and cheeses to order a spread here. They have some of the best selections in my opinion and the fresh figs and honeycombs makes it that much better. Your server will be super insightful to answer any inquiries and give you a reminder on the gnodes and flavor palette each one carries. You can build a small or large spread and decide on which ones you want to indulge in. Two of my favorite dishes to have an anxiety attack when deciding to over are their scallops and braised short ribs. Each one is set with their own flavor palette but hot-dang are they delish! The grits with the scallops are so good, and I do recommend this dish if you're wanting something on the lighter side. I loved the short ribs; however, those honey glazed carrots and mashed potatoes are so damn good. I could have a whole plate of simply that with their honeycomb and figs with bread and I'd be just as happy. Their wine selection is great and I do recall them allowing you to bring in your own liquor (they serve been and wine here) for a small fee. I always forget this part though every time I go lol. The first time we went to Bliss the food was only made better by seeing Coach Pop up close and in person. He's the man. We recently went back in the age of COVID and the food continues to excel. We shared the Bone Marrow, Kale Caesar, and Duck Foie Gras.....we had no leftovers. Everything is very rich and seasoned which is our preference so we love it, but is something worth noting for people who have a more mellow palate. The food was matched by excellent service. Hands down, one of my favorite restaurants in SA. It has class, elegance, celebrity sightings, a world class chef and some of the most aesthetically appealing dishes you will find in all of San Antonio. For our starters we started with the oyster sliders, Japanese hamachi, and east coast oysters served with squid ink crackers that were very creative and a great accompaniment to the oysters. For our mains, we dined on the kale caesar salad with shrimp, Georges bank sea scallops, beef short ribs, Lockhart quail, and the duck foie gras. All of the choices were delicious, but the duck foie gras was exceptional! It was hard deciding on a choice for dessert, but in the end, chose the butter cake and it was a great choice; perfectly buttery and moist. Justin was our waiter and he was amazing. We also met his wife who is also employed at Bliss. We enjoyed chatting with him and hearing about his rehab center with a purpose. Good luck with everything Justin! read more

If you're hungry do not order this. It was three scallops only. Although it was dense it wasn't filling at all. How filling can three scallops be (?) still, it was very good. Some people at the table ordered fish - which was literally a giant fish. It looked delicious and filling. It came with veggie sides. Downside - a lot of bones. We were visiting from out of town and decided to try this restaurant. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and it's not too loud. We ordered the hamachi tostadas which was so good. My 12 yr old had the pork belly masubi for her entree. I am sure that was also outstanding as neither my husband nor I got a bite. My husband got the duck and foie and I ordered the scallops. Both dishes were devoured with nothing left behind except our fork marks where we scrapped the plate clean. If I could say one thing about Bliss, I would say it's a sub-par eatery cloaked in the facade of a "fine-dining experience". Not everything that glitters is gold, and just because you present the food aesthetically does not make it GOOD or worth the price. Quality over aesthetics any day (but in a perfect world, there is both). Don't waste your money. Maybe it's because there is little to no competition for independent restaurants in SA, but when I come here and spend $300, I expect better food, the skin to be taken off my fish, and the server to be polite and not have an attitude. This place is charging New York prices for a sub optimal meal with small portions, basic ingredients, and classless staff who have no understanding of how to act/dress/behave in a tasteful setting. The appetizers were okay- the corn balls or whatever were tasty, but overpriced for what it is. It's literally just fried corn. The fish I ordered came with the skin on, which is a chef's preference of course, but why leave the skin when it does not enhance the flavor or texture of the dish? The dessert was SO GROSS- the goat cheese cheesecake is literally just goat cheese with a drop of vanilla extract on some pistachio graham base (when you order a dessert, you expect it to be sweet, and I am infatuated with goat cheese but this was a disgusting choice of flavors to combine and present as a dessert). Then when we said how bitter the strong goat cheese flavor was for a dessert, the server was adamant that it was our fault saying, "we didn't hide that from you" (verbatim). Then, the chocolate bar was described on the menu to be some extravagant dessert, only to come out as a 3 inch x 1 inch slab of chocolate cake with some kettle corn on top and a single line of caramel drizzled on the plate to seem like real "fine dining". Caramel corn? Really? And this is supposed to be high end. Just because you make the dessert small does not mean it is more exquisite. I would argue that a small dessert is supposed to leave you wanting more, ruminating in its deliciousness. But here, I'd argue that the portions were bigger than I needed because I didn't even want to finish it. read more

We went many times throughout the years, and the only suggestion that I would make would be to change up the menu. Bliss has been one of San Antonio's top culinary destinations since its inception five years ago. In that time, I have become one of the restaurant's most regular patrons; you know you've arrived when an institution of such pedigree has a table reserved for you in perpetuity. Thankfully, Bliss's standards have not wavered since day one. The menu, inspired by owner/executive chef Mark Bliss and helmed by chef de cuisine Tony Hernandez, has changed gradually over time, with some items being reimagined according to season or whimsy. A crispy soft shell crab appetizer, for example, might evolve from a Cajun/Creole interpretation to one bursting with South American influences (e.g., a bright watermelon mango salsa with roasted corn). What never changes, however, is the quality. Perhaps the best example of Bliss's "less is more" philosophy is the whole roasted branzino, resplendent with crispy skin and flaky, buttery flesh. Served with side of roasted artichoke hearts, grilled zucchini, and white bean puree, it's a dish of bright, clean, simple flavors that compliment rather than clash. At $34, it's also an outstanding value. Desserts are equally inspired. Goat cheese cheesecake might sound offputting at first, but give it a chance; the slight fermentation from the butyric acid prevents it from being the cliche, one-note NY cheesecake found at innumerable restaurants. Another winner is the dark chocolate candy bar with layers of chocolate mousse, a sprinkling of fleur de sel, and dulce de leche ice cream. If you're looking for the perfect special occasion restaurant, then Bliss should be at the top of your list. Holiday Bliss indeed! My bff booked the Chef's Table in the kitchen to say thank you for helping her find an awesome new job in San Antonio. Her & her husband & kids were organic farmers the last 5 years who truly appreciate fresh delicious food after raising 400 chickens, pigs, organic herbs, veggies, fruit trees, etc. I knew I would be happy with the food because my husband and I had eaten dinner here once before, however she was extremely happy with the food and her pallet is hard to please!! lol Recommend booking weeks in advance. Party of 6-10 but 8 best # IMHO. We started with a bottle of Spanish Cava for the charcuterie which included a cheese from Eastern European & cured chorizo. We then moved to a nice Italian White for the Hamachi Tostada (my favorite bite) & oyster sliders with candied bacon (hubs fave.) Next, the group was skeptical then in heaven eating the braised & charred Spanish Octopus; true bliss. We moved to a heartier Cabernet For the Louisiana-style Alaskan Halibut complete with Okra, & ending with perfectly cooked beef tenderloin with slightly pickled cauliflower which was a fun surprise. I think We barely had room left in our tanks to appreciate the triple threat desert headed our way, which included a flourless chocolate cake, coffee mousse, and a blackberry goat cheese cheesecake on graham cracker crust. At $125/person & gratuity expect to spend at least ~$1000 for 6. For us this was a bucket list item & completely worth it!! Bliss! You were outstanding. I chose this spot to celebrate my birthday while in town for the weekend, and I'm so glad I did! My husband and I started with their bone marrow and tartare dish. The fatty marrow really complemented the freshness of the tartare, so it wasn't overly rich. We then mentioned to our server that we'd be "sharing" our two main dishes, so he kindly offered to course out our meal and split each dish. I'm so happy they did this for us! They sent out the red snapper with risotto first. This was by far the best dish I've had in a long time. The sauces on the plate were just gorgeous. We then had their tenderloin dish. I liked it but I found the combo of pickled cauliflower, chimichurri, and Serrano peppers were all similar in flavor. Still a tasty dish but the fish was the star. We ended our meal with the chocolate bar, which was exactly what it promised -- a chocolate dream. I also want to shoutout the service again for bringing a birthday card over. It was very thoughtful. However It needed more salt and a kick in seasoning. Hence the 3 stars. The sides - corn and asparagus were delicious. Great flavors. I just visited New Orleans and other cities lately so my bar is set a bit high. Considering the flavor profile isn't unique and the portions are small, this restaurant is extremely overpriced. I have been to restaurants with very similar dishes that are about $20 cheaper. Unfortunately I don't think this place lives up to the hype or the prices. read more

My notes:- arugula/radicchio salad was incredible, oyster sliders were yummy (you get 4 small), no cocktails but get the mini bottle of moscato if you like sweet wines (my wife), CA Cab by the glass was terrific. scallops and beef tenderloin were good but we might - consider ordering something different next time, plenty of parking - drive is about 15 min from hotel emma, leave room for butter cake!!!! Loved it! I came in by myself and didn't feel like the wait staff treated me any different than if I were two people. So because of that, I instantly liked this place. I wanted something a bit lighter for my appetizer and ended up getting the octopus. I've eaten quite a bit of the stuff and have never had anything as tender as their steamed version. Not sure if this will make sense, but it had the same texture as mozzarella. Meaning it was smooth and creamy-like, instead of chewy. Total mind f. Then I ordered the duck breast and foie gras. It's extremely rich but well-balanced. There's enough acid from the vinaigrette on the salad that it cuts right through that delicious fatty taste. The kumquats and grapes were a nice touch but the whipped parsnip and broccolini were definitely my favorite. Overall, everything was pretty damn perfect in my book. read more

We were extremely excited to eat here and see if it lived up to the hype. I was shocked they didn't serve liquor but didn't really care. The ceviche was delicious although the plantain chips were soggy with all the liquid in the dish. All of our entrees were exceptionally presented and delicious. After was where the 3 stars come in. We weren't offered dessert for 10 minutes as our empty dishes remained on the table nor did our waiter check in one time after entrée delivery. We've gone here at least 3 times and each time the food was delicious and service is excellent. With all three times we've gone we had the corn tempura, George Banks Sea Scallops, Charcuterie, Roasted bone marrow with beef tenderloin tartare, Chocolate bar and Butter cake for dessert. The corn tempura was a sweet surprise and fun to eat. Sea scallops melted in my mouth and were absolutely cooked to perfection. Nothing worse then over cooked sea food but Bliss gets it correct. Roasted bone marrow was very good. I will say that the beef tenderloin over powered the bone marrow and for my taste I would have preferred the flavor of the marrow over the beef tartare but I will not remove a star for this as that is my preference. The Charcuterie is one of the best I've ever had. I'm happy the have honeycomb and part of the additions to your meats and cheeses of choice. Not many places offer that here in San Antonio, but it a wonderful pairing with meats and cheeses. The chocolate bar was so rich in dark chocolate and the popcorn was a fun edition and unexpected perfect pairing with the chocolate and I love dark chocolate. If your a chocolate lover then this is a must try. The butter cake was my favorite of the two desserts I've had there. The contrast of cold ice cream to warm freshly baked butter bake is a must. The entire dish is superb with all the different textures from the bourbon candy glass to the crème fraiche ice cream and warm buttery cake! You can't go wrong with this dessert. read more
