I had an appointment at 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon which was made a week ahead. Only to be called at noon on Saturday to be moved up or cancelled the appointment because they overbooked? The appointment was for a blowout for my daughter's prom. We were forced to go early and were rushed through. The stylist didn't do what she asked for. She wanted a bouncy, big curls blowout with a brush instead was given a flat, small curls with a curling iron that we could if done at home! Blo takes walk ins with ease - I was seen immediately even though I walked in without notice. The shop is cute, it's a galley shape, so a bit narrow. Space was used very well. I loved Jessica! She was so kind and so accommodating. She really listened to what I needed, and she was fun to talk to. I was able to go on my phone most of the time - answer emails, go on Reddit, etc, but when I would listen in to the conversation in the shop, it was always fun. I requested a soft wave blow out, and my hair was was completed fully with a blow dryer and brush, no need for a hot curl. I LOVED how it turned out. Jessica was phenomenal. Remember to tip the team well, they work really hard! You won't be disappointed; I had my hair done for a work event and received compliments all week! Blo Blow Dry Bar on the upper west side on Amsterdam is our go-to salon whenever we are in NYC. My daughters and I have thicker, curlier hair and we require stylists who are able to blow dry it out to a smooth and elegant look, which is exactly what this salon has done for us every single time (and especially for the last two visits which were for family weddings so our hair really needed to be picture perfect)! I hate leaving low rated reviews and I rarely do because I use Yelp to help guide the businesses I go to. I came here to get a blow out before my engagement photos. I asked for round brush blow out to get volume at the root and then beach waves but did not leave with that... First off the place is a bit run down looking with the chips of color missing from the leather chairs. They had just opened so maybe that's why the staff seemed a bit quiet, some eating breakfast at their station. The shampoo was also done with cold water and when she blow dried she didn't use the round brush and sort of blow dried just like I would at home. I mentioned it to her and how I could never learn to master the round brush technique at home thinking it might help prompt her to switch from the comb to the round brush and she said "oh yea, I remember in school it was difficult." Maybe I should have been more forward but it was my first time getting a blow out outside of a post hair cut at my hair salon and thought maybe she was just getting started. Next thing I know she starting to curl and my hair was flat. She asked if I liked it and said I think it needs more volume. She just added spray and tousled my roots a bit. I realized then that I didn't want to explain to her that she blow dried my hair flat and didn't want to make a fuss...so I ended up just trying to get out of their to have enough time to fix my hair at home. 2 stars instead of one because they weren't nasty or anything, just didn't deliver and lost $70. Bottom line, if you don't know how to use hair tools at all then sure use them. But if you're familiar with your curling iron enough, you can probably do the same job at home. read more

A bit disappointed here. I booked an updo as it's one of the cheaper options in NYC. As soon as I came in, I was rushed into my seat and immediately asked about style. I felt SO rushed by the employee and felt I was unable to discuss what I wanted as she jumped right into doing my hair. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and explained what I didn't want. I understand that there are limitations, especially at a place like Blo, but employees should be honest about their skill level or ability with certain hairstyles. The style I ended up getting looked absolutely nothing like the photos I showed. That's fine, but employees should be honest and upfront and offer other options if that style cannot be replicated. What I ended up with was a bit of an insane curled twist sort of thing. It ended up being pretty messy and a ton of pieces fell out completely between the appointment and the event. I would have asked for different styling if that inspiration picture couldn't be accomplished. Aside from that, it was just generally messy. Flyaways everywhere and the hairdo was not secured at all. On top of all this, the location itself is a sensory nightmare. The music is BLARING and whoever is controlling it will skip between songs constantly. It's dark and dingy and clearly needs some repairs. I also kept spinning in the seat like a carnival ride. All that to say, I understand that this is more of a "budget" option in NYC, but I do not recommend getting an updo at Blo and am pretty disappointed I paid that much for a mediocre hairdo I could've done better myself. read more

Staff here doesn't necessarily wear masks even though their Yelp page states otherwise. I had an appointment but wanted to confirm this ahead of time. The edgy lady I spoke to on the phone let me know that everybody is vaccinated and therefore don't necessarily wear masks. Lol ok so you're all wearing shirts so that means you don't need pants. They could at least offer to wear a mask upon a clients request. In addition to this and the bad vibe from the phone call + all the poor recent reviews about the actual quality of the blowouts, I decided to cancel. read more

Scrubbed and washed my hair (love getting my hair washed when the stylist has longer nails!) and she was very gentle washing, brushing, blowing out and styling my hair. I took my 12 year old daughter to get her hair washed and blown out mind you I booked a regular service for $55 quoted amount however I did put a note my daughter's hair type which is a 3C/4C curl type (we are African-American) . I did not expect because of her hair type that unbeknownst to me there would be added on "extended time charge" by the receptionist. This was very unprofessional because it was not told to me via email nor phone that there would be an additional $25 charge due to my daughter's hair texture and that if there is a longer time to blow dry her hair that it's an extra charge. I do not feel that the $79 amount I paid was worth it after all my daughter is only 12 years old. I am still waiting to speak to the Mgr regarding this. read more

I was a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding a few weeks ago and needed my hair put into an updo (or some semblance of) for a reasonable price. I originally booked an appointment with the Blo in Chelsea since the wedding was at the Standard hotel, however when I went to go look up Blo again on google so I could look at their hair menu and settle on a style, I saw that this location had a $23 groupon (normal price is $45) and is closer to my house, so I cancelled the appointment at the Chelsea location and booked here instead (for the same time I was looking for to begin with - on about a day and a half notice, sweet.) When I got there and after my hair was washed the girl (I suck at names, I really wish I remembered hers) asked what style I wanted. I had been looking to go for the fishtail braid they have but she deemed my hair too short so I went with their sleek bun type style. Again there was some sort of issue with how my hair wanted to lay so she did an off to the side type variation with a lot of volume and it looked great. (BF referred to it as wicked stepmother hair but swears it wasn't meant in a negative way lol) When I was done it was pouring out (ugh) and my stupid ass didn't have an umbrella. Thankfully the girls at the counter had a shower cap for me which afforded me the ability to get over to Duane Reade and buy an umbrella without destroying the look. By the time I finally got home around midnight (my appointment was at 1pm) it still looked great and I was a bit sad to have to take it out - even though I knew if I slept on it my hair would be one gigantic knot in the morning with all the teasing the girl did to give my flat hair some oomph. Next time I need my hair looking nice I'll come back. I liked some of the down dos they had but we were dictated updos for the wedding -_- read more

My self care day was wonderful. I made a morning appointment with Dominique and she was prompt, friendly and gave the best shampoo and blow out I had in a long time. The salon was clean and modern looking and very quiet with exception of the good music playing. I liked the vibe , not a bunch of people gossiping. It was exactly 6 people in the salon ( due to COVID I guess) but we were each conversing with our stylist's . Dominique was a good listener and she assured me she could handle my thick , curly hair. Great staff and service. Very efficient. I've had appointments with both Yester and Queen and both have been awesome, my hair style lasted for an extra day. If you're in a rush, the great thing is that you'll usually be out of there in 45 minutes. Even during the frantic madness during the holidays. :) I've tried at least 6 Blo salons around Manhattan and one differentiator that Ive noticed here is that they don't have the usual glass of champagne or coffee/tea offered everywhere else so if that matters to you on top of getting a fantastic blow dry & styling, thought this little detail might help to avoid surprise disappointments. read more

I did not like my results . I get my hair done every three months or so in New Jersey when I do my highlights but I this weekend I have a last minute special occasion and my regular place did not have a slot available. I decided to go to this salon because I visited once before and the results were okay (4/5 stars ) and I was in a time crunch . I decided to pay extra for the " wow " treatment and my hair looked less than stellar immediately after . I told myself that I could just fix it when I get home and that it wasn't that bad . 20 minutes later when I got home I looked in the mirror and I was horrified. I don't expect my hair to look so bad like I did it myself . The " wow " treatment didn't help at all . It looks air dried . Side note , other clients left with beautiful hair despite the misty weather outside . And I usually leave the salon pleased with my blowouts. A wonderful little gem in the rough! Super convenient on Columbus - right now under scaffolding so it is a little tricky to find if yo aren't looking carefully (I had to call to be sure where they were - just by the florist!). I made an appointment on the same morning, however I think that was just pure luck. I would recommend calling ahead. My stylist (I didn't catch her name!) was friendly, professional and efficient. I didn't ask or want curling iron curls, just a simple round brush blow dry and she was excellent. Thank you for a fantastic blow dry and I look forward to my next one! read more

I had made an appointment for 2:00pm for a blow out. The blow out was okay. The person who serviced me, burned me multiple times. The heat was unbearable. She held the blow dryer on my scalp too long. I thought I could sit and toughen it out, but eventually it hurt so bad I had to pull my head away. As she was moving up on the different sections of my hair, it continued. At first she apologized, claiming that her hairdryer was really hot. Then when it kept occurring, her apologies got shorter. Walking out of the salon my head was sore and still hot. She apologized for hurting me at the end of my appointment but it didn't feel genuine. She wouldn't make eye contact with me as I was paying or leaving. She seemed very disinterested. She did do a wonderful job with the washing, mh hair felt clean. Although when she was towel drying my hair she kept bumping into my cartilage piercing and it got caught on the towel. When she took away the towel it tugged my piercing. I did not express my concern at first, but now looking back I should've spoken up. She was very rough with me. Very disappointed. Also thought it was a little off putting to be asked how much I'd like to tip. Usually I just write it on the paper. Leaving the salon I noticed the ends of my hair feeling crispy and and crunchy. My hair is naturally straight and has no issues w holding curls. read more

I went out of my way to come here because of all the positive reviews but was pretty disappointed. I guess it really depends on who you get to service you. I wanted a professional blow out for my family photo. I have very simple hair--poker straight but will frizz if not styled right, and it always looks better when the salon does it. I asked for it to be blown straight with a little body at the scalp. My hair is recently cut so is should have looked much better than it did. There was little body at the top and what was there didn't last more than about an hour before it looked flat and messy. Not sure if they used too much product. I can usually get 2-3 days out of a blow out but the next day it looked oily and flat--so i had to wash it and honestly my blow out looked much better. Needless to say was totally NOT at all worth what i paid--$60 + tip. read more

I have a lot of thick and curly hair and she took her time on perfecting each section but was still very efficient and quick! Plus she's a total sweetheart. The blow out was not worth what I paid, even with a Groupon deal! It took almost an hour and a half to wash and "curl" my shoulder length hair. The curls did not look like what I had asked and the stylist blamed my hair for not holding a curl. I had mentioned at the beginning that it does better dirty but she insisted I still shampoo/condition and she would be able to make it happen still. I had to redo 80% of the hair myself when I got home. Will not be returning and would not recommend! read more
