Blu Cantina has served as my go to spot in East Atlanta for both hookah and just for a chill night out. Blu Cantina charges $30 per hookah and the flavor selection does not have much variety as dedicated hookah joints, but the bowls are always packed quite well and last a long time. Drinks here run relatively cheap compared to a lot of other EAV spots. They additionally have a kitchen that serves up decent Tex Mex food and that doesn't close until one. The nachos in particular always satisfy and make for pleasant, messy munching when buzzed or more. My one gripe with this place stems from its weekend volume; the music is far too loud to have a conversation inside. That said, the music tends to be good and they have a small, quieter patio outside which allows for great people watching. Last night was my first time at Blu Cantina since they moved from Peters Street. Good vibes and good food as always! Blu Cantina is an urban bar eatery that serves Mexican style food & drinks. The crowd is full of beautiful, predominantly black people & the music here is always on point! They play a lot of hip hop and mix new music with our favs from the 2000's. Let's start with a little context, Blu Cantina has been open for a full 6 days by the time I write this review. Initially, considering the age of the restaurant I was going to take it easy on them but after a little research, Blu Cantina used to operate in Castelberry Hills... So this isnt a new spot...just a new location. Venue: cantina + lounge. Im not sure about the concept. Im guessing it did well in Castleberry Hills. It was a little sensory overload for my taste but cest la vie. The booths have huge curtains to give the place a VIP vibe after hours. There is a cute patio. Probably going to stay packed in the warmer months. Food: the food was decent, underwhelming to.say the least. The food was hot. Presentation was ideal. Food service was prompt. The menu is small. Not small in the exclusive fancy kind of way but small as in simple. I had the steak fajitas and brisket tacos. The fajitas are good. Looked like a pretty substainal chunk of meat with all the expected fixins. The brisket tacos is a flop for me. The meat was tender but lacked a clear flavor tasted like it was simmered in a oacket a taco seasoning. Maybe needed.some salt...or adobo...or cilantro...Ill take some Lawrys at this point. Checkout: slow AF. There was an error on my bill and I waited over 20mins for it to be corrected and another 15mins to get my card back. In a hurry...cashout at the bar. Overall, something to eat. Happy a taco place took over the spot as it is always goof to have queso close to so many bars. I would give it a 3 and 1/2 if we could give half stars, but I was impressed with the service and speedy food so I give it 4. Must check it out! This location is fairly new - 60 days. I decided to swing by with friends for a quick bite to eat on a Saturday night around 10:30pm before my drunken festivities. The East Atlanta area is a little live as there are a few bars around. This bar hopping scene is in between trendy and hipster so it's cool, but if you're not ready for it... don't bother. It's an acquired taste. Anyway, upon arriving at Blu Cantina, the friendly servers greeted us; throughout my visit they were overall really attentive. They have a great patio seating area leading out to the main street so you can be entertained by people watching. The music was bumpin' (hip hop, rap) but don't expect to carry full conversations if you're seated inside - it's loud. The drinks were mixed well & pretty; they have a great custom cocktail menu and a full bar. I had the Hendricks; my friends had the Bob Marley. For food, they have several options in which I am eager to try when I come back. This time I had the chicken empanadas. You can easily tell they are hand made. Very very very good. For dessert, I had a sweet tooth craving for churros, which were extra fresh and everything you'd ever hope for. If I had one suggestion, I would suggest adding vanilla ice cream to the churros. I tried to give this spot the benefit of the doubt all throughout my pickup experience, but unfortunately they missed the mark all the way around the board. I found this place by typing "Mexican" in DoorDash, and I'm new to the area so I wasn't familiar with this restaurant at all. I decided to do pickup instead of delivery, because I wanted to see what the restaurant looked like. Let me first say that this is not a Mexican, Latin American, or any type of culture of Spanish speaking origin restaurant. It's a hookah lounge that serves tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc. That was the first disappointment when I arrived, but the reviews were good so I reserved judgment. I walked in and went to the bar and I was told my order would be ready in about 6-7 minutes. I came back in that time and it still wasn't ready and the girls at the bar weren't exactly welcoming. So I waited another 10 min or so and when I went back inside my food was sitting in the window, but didn't get bagged until I went over and asked for it AGAIN. The food smelled good on the way home so I was excited to try it, but unfortunately the smells were deceiving. The chicken quesadilla barely had any cheese in it and was very dry. The empanadas were pockets of air with a tiny scoop of meat. The southwestern egg rolls were mushy processed chicken concoctions. The "Latin fusion" wings were dry and bland with no sauce! The tortilla chips were hard and over seasoned. And the queso? Hands down the worst queso I've ever had. The container was mostly jalapeños and the queso was watery and cold. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. It wasn't expensive but I very well could have saved my money and made a better meal at home. We came in on a Tuesday for $2 tacos. I was told that they also have trivia night later on. Everything was just alright. We got the cheese dip and salsa. The dip was luke warm. We ordered the turkey tacos and the shredded chicken tacos (even though the chicken was supposed to be grilled). All tacos filled with shredded cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. BLU Cantina made me miss Tomatillos, and I didn't even like Tomatillos all that much. I've been twice and the service is by far some of the worst I've seen in the EAV area. The second time I went I walked up to the counter to order and proceeded to wait while 3 separate servers came up, made eye contact with me, decided I wasn't their problem, and walked away. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years and know that I would've have never done something like that to a customer just waiting to order. When I was finally able to order I was told to sit wherever I want. The food lacked anything to make it unique, memorable, or delicious. Clearly Latino food made by people who aren't invested or knowledgable in Latino culture or cuisine. A manager came by and asked to refill my water. He walked away with the glass and handed it to another server. I never received my water again. When I asked the server if I could have more water, she hurriedly ran to grab some, leaving a dirty cleaning rag on my table for some inexplicable reason. I've heard good things about Blu Cantina and decided to finally come visit being that it's taco Tuesday. It took a while for a waitress to come to our table and take our order. At that time we found that they only have 2 taco options for the $2 deal which was disappointing but the queso was $2 too. My dad and I each ordered two chicken tacos plus queso. The queso was disappointing. It was soupy and not thick at all. Flavor was ok. Two tacos came to our table even though we ordered 2 each, I guess they were still working on the other two, there was only one cook on the line. So my dad and I each ate one while we waited for the other 2. They definitely give you a good amount of chicken but could've probably used a little salsa. At the end of my meal my dad wasn't feeling too well and, I assume the manager, brought him a bottle of water to help him cool down as well as checked on us. Ordered takeout via door dash and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food here was. It was quite the drive from our house but the food was still piping hot when it got to us. I got the southwestern egg rolls and the fried chicken tacos. The egg rolls were so flavorful and a perfect portion. The tacos were even better! I loved the spicy mayo that they had, it made it nice and juicy. Can't wait to try more meals from here since I've heard great reviews of their nachos! Also you can order margaritas to go from the app which is even better not many Mexican restaurants in the area offer that... and they do have plenty of alcohol in them some restaurants are skimpy on their margs when they are to go, not here. Blu Cantina previously had some of the best hookah so I'm hoping that's something they will eventually get back. Every night they have a special on drinks and food. On the night I decided to go, I ordered nachos and a Hennessy margarita that didn't disappoint. Not a great place for a date spot because the music is extremely loud. Also, timing is everything. Two of us walked in at 7:00 on a Friday. The place (which is small even when full) had a few empty tables at the back. Sat down at a table next to a booth occupied by a member of the waitstaff (who saw us sit down), who ignored us for the next several minutes, then walked by on the way to another table and sullenly asked 'howyawdurrin' while making virtually no eye contact. Other waitstaff also saw us and just sat at the bar, not bothering to come by, offer menus, bring water, etc. After easily 10 minutes of being ignored, we walked out with zero interest from any of the staff. Walked up the street to the other taco joint. Instantly got a friendly greeting, got seated, and got extremely prompt water, orders taken, and food delivery despite the fact that they easily had 4 times as many diners as Blu (but the same number of waitstaff). When we asked for the bill, the waiter said we'd get a fire department discount (completely by coincidence, both of us were wearing AFD t-shirts -- we're not firemen, but we support the local firehouse). We explained that we weren't actually fire department employees, and that we just had the shirts for participating in a fundraiser. He smiled and said, "then we'll give you a discount as thanks for supporting the firemen." And the food, by the way, was excellent. Blu has a SERIOUS, FATAL attitude and staffing problem. Used to love Tomatillos at this location, and finally decided to give Blu Cantina a try. Ordered the Nachos with ground turkey to-go. While waiting approx 25 minutes for the food, I noticed the kitchen seemed very efficient in preparing and setting the food out. Unfortunately, the service at this place really hurts the experience. The servers just weren't engaged and clearly didn't want to be there. I noticed another couples to go order sit out for 10 minutes before the servers checked on it and gave it to them. The same happened to my food, which was a good amount of food for the price. It was luke-warm in temperature by the time I got it, and cold after a 13 minute drive home.
