Awful! We made reservations on the patio yesterday for 5:15 right after the races were over. They sat us on the patio that was covered with Lantern Flies. Within minutes, one landed on my head and several were on and under our table. We asked, along with another table that was seated next to us, if we could go inside. They said no. The other table left. We then asked if we could sit on the other side of the patio away from the side of the building that was covered with the Lantern Flies. They still said no. Not only did they say no, my husband caught the hostesses mocking us because we had asked for another table. When we first complained, the waiter told us that when he was setting up the patio, that they were jumping all over him. So, they knew about the problem and still seated us out there. They made no effort to accommodate us. We got up and left just like the table next to us. It was a Saturday and it was impossible to find another restaurant locally to have dinner. It is a disgrace that they were willing to seat us on a patio knowing full well that it was covered with these bugs and made no apologies about it. read more

Live music was great. Food was something else. The Pat Lafrieda burger was plopped down on my table with no condiments and a side of crumbs of what used to be chips. Had to go get ketchup from the bar. Shared my burger because my girlfriend was still waiting for her pizza. Pitcher of sangria was filled to the top with ice. Got two glasses out of it. Her pizza finally showed up after we asked twice for it. It was miserable. Looked like they smeared tomato paste on it and put the skinniest slices of mozzarella I have ever seen. read more

Came for comedy show with my wife and her family. They set up the back area into a stage with individual tables all over. We came for the 2nd showing so there was no dinner being served but they did have dessert. The desserts were horrible and we tried every one of them. Just stick to the drinks and make sure to eat before you come. The set up is cool with the stage and tables but the experience kind of sucked. I will probably not be back. read more

We (six of us) arrived for dinner and were promptly seated. There is plenty of parking. There is mini golf next to the restaurant. Mini golf was not open this time of year. The restaurant has huge decks for outdoor dining. If you like manhattans, you must try one at Blu Grotto. It's delicious. They have a very comprehensive wine list. Our starters included burata, oysters, carpaccio and salads. My carpaccio was outstanding. We shared the starters so everyone could have a taste. Notable main courses included bolognese, gnocchi, veal Milanese and salmon. Nobody was dissatisfied. My gnocchi were very good and cooked in a nice light brown butter sauce. Service was very good. Prompt and covered by multiple staff members. They also have a person monitoring diners with an iPad to predict when they will finish and allow tables to open up on Open Table. Decor- very modern and comfortable. Watch the ceiling as the scenes change. Very cool. One issue - the chairs are very comfortable, but they need felt sliders on the feet. They are very hard to move on the hardwood floor. Also, in some locations it's hard to get in and out of the chairs without moving the table or sliding out over the arm of the chair. I'd recommend not sitting at a table where your back is against the wall. Overall - very very good. We will return. read more

I'm shocked this restaurant is averaging only a 3.5 rating! That's the reason we waited so long to dine here because we didn't think we were going to have such an amazing meal as we did! This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous inside, and it has beautiful outdoor views as well. We started with the burrata and the octopus appetizer. The burrata was good, but the octopus was exceptional! They gave you a generous size portion as well. The octopus is a must order appetizer here. For entrees we had the bone in filet mignon and the tile fish special, and we also ordered a side of potatoes as well. The tile fish was good, but the bone in filet mignon on stole the show! It was so delicious and the blue cheese I requested on top gave it an excellent flavor. The potato side dish was tasty too. One thing this restaurant should do is add more side dishes do accompany the various meat dishes they have such as creamed spinach and lobster Mac and cheese. For dessert we had the chocolate lava cake with a mocha filling accompanied by a pistachio gelato and a coconut cake special. The lava cake was cooked perfectly, but I wish it had less mocha flavoring and more chocolate. The pistachio gelato that it came with wasn't a good combination either. I actually asked for it to come with vanilla gelato instead, but unfortunately was still served with the pistachio gelato which neither of us liked. The coconut cake was very good! Another recommendation would be to add to more desserts to the menu as well as there was only 4 options to choose from. We both thought our meals were fabulous, and now plan to become regulars here. Second time here, first was for the Beer Garden for live music and it was great! Today we went for a quick 5 pm snack a few cocktails on a Saturday & we found a Happy Hour! Nice selection of snacks & cocktails & wine, very comfortable bar stools & tv's showing various racetracks you can bet on as you indulge your self. Just wish the 2 very enthusiastic bartenders had a bit more experience. Not very proficient at making the cocktails on the menu but after a few tries they got it right. I dont know why I didnt review after my first visit, but I had to go back again just for the salmon. Its perfectly crispy on the skin side yet rare on the inside. Excellent! Appetizers and main meals were very good. And the wine by the glass list was even impressive. I had a white burgundy which you don't find often on a wine list by the glass. For appetizers the octopus, Shisito peppers and chopped salad were all equally delicious. A few people ordered the special Halibut with artichokes and loved it. I had the shrimp scampi over spinach with white cannelloni beans in a well done wine sauce. They were also real jumbo shrimp. And it's a pretty restaurant with a good vibe. Went to the track last Saturday, the 29th of June. Decided to try the beer garden here at the Blu Grotto. There were 11 of us. Left track around 4 and all arrived by 4:15. Got a table for 11 underneath their decking and ordered our drinks. Took awhile to get the drinks and when we got them we ordered our food, mostly burgers and pies. Then, it started raining. It actually poured. Our waitress came over about 10 minutes in and told us no food, the kitchen was closed. They have an outdoor kitchen! We ordered another round figuring the rain would stop and we could then eat, but by now the rain was coming thru the roof, soaking everybody. Blue grotto beer garden We gave this place a second chance yesterday, and sadly, once again, we were disappointed. Although it is a beautiful venue, service is lacking, along with the quality of food. Took 20 minutes to get a drink, the server lost our ticket for our food so we waited 40 minutes without getting any food. Upon arrival, the burger was just so-so, but unfortunately, the wings arrived way after my burger was eaten and were inedible. The manager came over and questioned us about the wings, and as a token of good customer support, he removed them from our bill. We tried a few of the specialty pizzas, but they were more crust than anything else. My basil pizza had exactly two pieces of basil on it. If looking for an incredible pizza, try Pazzo in Red Bank on Monday, where it is half price. This place has tremendous potential to be a weekly spot for drinks and a bite to eat, but there are better locations elsewhere, with better service and higher quality of food. read more

Went here for my birthday (which they asked about on the reservation but never mentioned while we were there), received the worst service I have ever received at any restaurant. Yes, any restaurant. Ever. After being seated and being provided bread and water, the waitress came over. "Can I get you a drink from the bar?" After telling her our drink order, she walked away without saying a word. About ten minutes later, she returns..."The bar is backlogged, do you know what you want to eat?" No "hello", no "my name is...", no "have you been here before?" or "here's our specials". After telling her our order, she again walks away without a word. About five minutes later, our drinks arrive without a word...drop and run. Ten minutes later, the table next to us asks us if we ordered meatballs, and hands us our first appetizer. After speaking with them, we realize they had sent back our other appetizers. After explaining this to another member of the wait staff, they finally bring our appetizers to the correct table. At this point I've finished my drink and moved it to the far side of the table to see how long it would take for her to notice. Our appetizers get cleared, no one notices (or asks how they were). Our dinner arrives and no one notices the empty drink glasses. Our waitress comes and goes three more times, appearing to look over our table and sees nothing. Finally, as we're almost done with dinner, she asks if we need anything else and I mention that I would like another drink. Ten minutes later, she comes back and asks if anyone brought my drink over...nope. She comes back another five minutes later to let me know they couldn't find ginger beer for my Moscow Mule, but that they were looking. Another ten minutes later, my drink arrives. After clearing our dishes, she comes over with dessert menus and asks if we want anything. After declining dessert we get our check and leave. The reason this is not 1 star is because the food was actually pretty good...well above average...the drinks were great as well, once they got to the table. This is the third time I was there and it continues to surprise in a good way. The food is outstanding as is the service. I'm not too keen on the drinks, but the food is more important in my eyes. First, I love the decor. The blue tint is relaxing and inviting. The main dining room is comfortable and not crowded. We were seated in an small alcove at the right hand side of the dining area, which made it cozier and more intimate. We were seated as soon as we arrived, even though the rest of our party wasn't here yet and got some a bottle of sparkling water with limes and lemons. Once our friends arrived we ordered drinks. My BF had a M.Y Red, which he liked except for the egg whites. I had the El Burro, which was a tequila take on a Mule, but claimed to have grapefruit juice and soda, but I couldn't taste it at all. I ended up sending it back for a Cosmo which was good. We started with Meatballs, which were served in a red sauce with melted cheese on top. I had the Beef Tartar special which was made with a bit of truffle oil and Fontina cheese fondita (light beaten cheese fondue). It was simply heaven! We followed with a Filet Mignon, which was perfectly cooked medium rare for him with a small portion of potatoes of gratin and broccoli puree, while I had Octopus Pasta Puttanesca, which was truly delicious. The cap the meal, he had as Chocolate Lava Cake, with Nutella inside, which could only be rivaled by my Nutella Pannacotta. The texture was smooth as silk and the flavors were not overwhelming. Definitely worth a taste! If you go later for dinner (we arrived at 8h15), we could not get our first choice of mains, the Filet replaced the Pork Chop which I had had before and is amazing! This review is for their beer garden. It has so much potential but we have been there twice now and have had horrible service both times. The first time was right after they opened so we were more forgiving. But the last time we were a party of 4 and walked out before ordering food. We waited over a half hour between drinks and the waiter coming back to get our food order. He continued to stand near the bar and look over at us but wasn't coming over. Was with two friends and we all agree, our waiter had a bad attitude with every table she tended. Sometimes people have bad days, I get it, just do not need it. Food choices for the Beer Garden are limited; pizza, burger, wings, and a lot of fish dishes, I enjoy the fish. My order for the tuna Poke bowl was served on a plate and each item in a little separate pile. Chef, the key word to this order is 'bowl'. Band was on point, although band member was flying a drone just above the crowd (like five feet above their heads) recording the band. Dangerous situation and accidents happen, I also believe the pilot of the drone did not have a flying license for the drone as he would know about flying engagements and safety precautions. We made an 8:30 reservation here for a Saturday evening to celebrate a special occasion (2 birthdays) without knowing much about the place. Intentionally arriving at 7:45, we made our way to the bar- every tv had horse racing and the bettors were heavily engaged in the action. This is not our thing but it's understandable since we're next to the track and this lends itself to being a more social atmosphere; we ended up in conversation with 2 other couples. Manhattans were healthy pours with a large cube of ice, gimlets and Hudson Baby bourbon were flowing to the tune of $180 (16 drinks). The hostess was very flexible and allowed us to stay at the bar until 9pm before we were seated while saving the window table for us. Appetizers: short rib meatballs, calamari, and tuna tartare...all delicious! Entrees: Pork Chop & peppers (best ice ever had), Veal Chop Parmesan (huge and incredible), Monkfish (delicious), and scallops that were perfectly cooked. Dessert: chocolate ganache molten cake and ricotta cheesecake. The service was attentive and friendly, the food was excellent, and the atmosphere classy and up-beat. I booked Blu Grotto for Mother's Day. By the pictures, I thought that it was going to be a really upscale place with unique decor. The pictures though are better than reality. On the website, the menus were all a la carte items. When we arrived, it was a Mother's Day buffet, which wasn't advertised. I felt like I really blew it this year on Mother's day because on top of the cheesy blue ambiance and the buffet that was nothing to write home about, there were a TON of flies. It was really disgusting. We also had to ask the waitress if the bartender could not use ice in our cocktails. The glass was literally full from top to bottom with crushed ice. It was ridiculous. We did not know whether we should order at the bar or wait for a server to come over, it looked like they didn't know either. While they were nice the rest of the time they continued to be disorganized. I got the burger to eat, it was tasty but overcooked and the plate was very empty for $16, coming with pickled vegetables instead of fries or chips. They had a nice beer selection that was reasonably priced, but the cocktails came in tiny cups filled with crushed ice. The Blu Grotto left a BAD TASTE in our mouths. To put this review in perspective, keep in mind that the layout of the Grotto is a bit strange; 1/2 of the tables have a nice view, the others do not. The pictures on Yelp are a bit misleading. My girlfriend wanted to surprise me and made a reservation a few days ahead of time. She even called back to confirm and asked if we could have a nice table, as it was my birthday. We walked in right behind a couple whom did not have reservations. After giving our name the hostess said "Gabby (I think that was her name) will seat you, please follow her". However Gabby walked right by us and proceeded to seat the other couple. Puzzled I turned to the main hostess and said "I think she is taking that couple to our seat". She replied "your right" but just stood there like a deer caught in headlights. "Well...you might want to say something". She took two steps, and floundered instead of handling the situation. My GF had in fact caught up to Gabby and said "Excuse me, I think you're supposed to seat us" to which she was told "OH you're right, but it's too late now". The couple with no reservations now had the best seats in the house while we were left standing in the middle of the dinning floor. As a consolation they pointed us to literally THE WORST table in the place, which faces the door. We declined. After a few minutes we were seated in what is probably the 2nd worst table, facing the kitchen entrance. The other side of our view was a stack of chairs on the deck. To be clear, normally I would not care much where I sat. But we did plan ahead and request a nice seat, which due to BAD SERVICE was given away right in front of us. Pretty ROTTEN way to treat a customer. And all of this without so much as an apology. My GF was VERY UPSET, as she had put effort into planning this ahead of time and was really excited. After sitting a minute we decided this experience was SPOILED and would go to another local place. On the way out we had the courtesy to tell Gabby that we were leaving, who replied in a sarcastic tone "BYE!". Dining out is like a symphony. It does not matter if an appetizer or entree is good, one or two bad musicians can ruin the entire experience. From the other reviews I see there is a reoccurring issue with reservations and service. Do not let the Blu Grotto RUIN YOUR NIGHT, there are way too many other well run local restaurants in the area. read more

Nothing had any flavor at all. Chicken from la Rosa tastes better. My boyfriend's steak just tasted like gross meat. We literally left there hungry because neither of us wanted to eat our food. Best Octopus I've had in a long time, if ever. Service was thoughtful but needs improvement. Wine service gets a D for not opening the bottle at the table. When I asked why the reply was odd "I tasted it to make sure it wasn't corked. I didn't drink any" Hmmm incorrect answer and wrong service. I don't care if it's a $20 or $2000 bottle that's not how you serve wine. Over all I'll give them 3.4-4 stars, a B-. It's local to where I live and will definitely give them another try. TAKING BACK MY PREVIOUS COMMENT-- FIVE STARS FOR THE UTMOST PROFESSIONALISM AND RESPECT. After reading mine and my boyfriends reviews about our awful experience last time we dined, the new manager reached out to us via email to apologize for the previous manager's inappropriate and outlandish behavior toward us. Casey, the new manager, offered my boyfriend and my mom dinner on the house. I mean everything-- dinner, drinks, apps. Shook our hands and introduced himself to us, checked in on us throughout the evening, and made our night exceptional. According to our amazing waitress Patti, she told us that she remembered some awful evenings with the previous manager, and that the new manager wanted to select some previously disappointed and disrespected patrons to bring back into the Blu Grotto to essentially ask for a second chance. THIS RESTAURANT, WITHOUT QUESTION, HAS EARNED OUR RESPECT AND FIVE STAR REVIEW AGAIN. To produce some background: I'm a teacher and my boyfriend and I are both millennials. We never ever complain at restaurants and we give our servers and their managers a lot of grace and love and patience, even when they royally mess up... but for a previous manager twice our size to chase us out of the restaurant and scream at us in front of our parents on the front steps of the establishment?
