Have always had decent service with this group. However I ordered lunch on line for my wife and I as she has medical issues and she MUST eat prior to treatment as the medicine makes her really nauseous. So I ordered on line and then went and picked it up at one of their stores which was convenient and nice. When I got back to where my wife was taking treatment they made her sandwich wrong which in itself is not the end of the world but today as she had to eat either prior or during her treatment it made me mad. Not to mention that 2 sandwiches and side salads were $26.00 So I called and they agreed to bring a sandwich out to us which was great but by the time they got here she as already feeling very sick and so I unwrapped the sandwich and wouldn't you know it they made the same wrong sandwich all over again. I happen to be part of the group of people that just don't understand the appeal of this place either. It's not a bad place but it's definitely nothing to write home about. I've tried probably each of the sandwiches on the menu and the best adjectives I can think of to describe them are 'bland' and 'tasteless.' I know they pride themselves in baking their own bread, and some of the samples I've had of their bread have been good...Unfortunately, the bread that comes on their various menu sandwiches is basically just glorified "artisan" Wonderbread. If you really want to try something flavorless and boring, opt for their chicken salad sandwich. You'll understand what I'm talking about. To start they advertise that if you come in dressed all in blue, you eat free. I called to verify this and was told that yes depending on the amount of blue you had on would get you a discount of some sort. My daughter and I wore blue jeans, t-shirts, shoes, and hair accessories. When we went to pay for our meal and no discount because our clothes did not count. It had to be paint, which I was not told! Love everything I've ever had from here. But, I think my favorite thing has been the sourdough starter set. The kit included the flour and starter to make one loaf and enough starter and flour to feed for future loaves. More importantly, it came with great instructions. I am usually a fan, but have had terrible experiences since the move to primarily online/pick-up orders. Order 1: Missing baguette. Order 2: Missing cookies. Order 3: They were out of chocolate croissants, so cancelled my order rather than asking if I wanted a replacement (I would have been happy with plain!). The online system required me to select a "flavor" for my iced coffee (no option for "no flavor"); I chose "regular," assuming that "regular" = plain iced coffee. It was instead simple syrup and milk, with a dash of coffee. Finally, my bagel sandwich was made on a croissant. If I wanted a croissant sandwich, I would have ordered one. This place is phenomenal. A very nice gentleman named Nick took my call, it was almost closing time and I don't close my shop till 10 as well. So, I asked if it was too late to come in he said it wasn't. I rushed up there because I know how it feels to have worked all day and you just wanna go home. I walked in the door Nick greeted me, asked how I was, and politely took my order. He didn't have the grumpy face or a bad attitude like most people that work in a food establishment do when it's almost closing time. Blue Baker is one of my favorite places to go in College Station. Whether it be for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a cup of coffee. For breakfast, I will like their salmon bagel. I have had other items from the breakfast menu and none have disappointed. For lunch and dinner, you can't go wrong with the oven toasted indigo sandwich, the chicken pesto pizza, or a cup of their soup. Definitely check Blue Baker's bakery menu for when they serve blueberry peach bread or banana chocolate bread. Both are delicious. If you have a sweet tooth, Blue Baker's chocolate chips are so good. I have heard about Blue Baker from living in College Station and decided it might be a good place to try and have a peaceful lunch. I finally had some free time this afternoon and found it less than appetizing. The Good: -Desserts (cup cakes and cookies) -Croissants (used for sandwiches) were well made and better than most restaurants -Tea (sweet & Peach) good quality and not over-brewed/old as many restaurants -Atmosphere was calm and quiet (coffee lounge-esque The Bad: -Quality of meat in the sandwiches was much worse than expected and was somewhere between packaged lunch meat and Wal-Mart/HEB deli meat (lower quality than subway) -Price/quantity for sandwiches was horrible, at the exact same price point of a subway foot long the quantity and quality was less than expected (70% bread) -Potato Soup was very disappointing the potatoes were diced into pencil eraser sized bites and was overpowered by the amount of celery dumped into fill the bowl. -Sourdough Bread should not have been allowed to be called sourdough due to the exceedingly sweet flavor produced. This place is average at best. Pizza is meh, pastries are dry, and I could make these sandwiches at home , cheaper, and better undoubtedly. Their Royal isn't bad, but the fruit flies near the soda unit were. I think people compare this place , and write reviews based on what they know about food, and serving the average general public consumer , which is usually very little. I don't expect anyone here, myself included, to be the next judge on the show "Chopped," but c'mon people...I almost don't want to write a review on yelp knowing real people are deciding where to go If they are unfamiliar with the area based on reviews written by people from a place who's slogan for years was, and still is, keep it normal.....but in the interest of honest evaluating here goes nothing. Here is who will like this place : People who write or take a review seriously that says, "great dipping sauces." This should equate to don't read anymore of my review. If you want to dip trash, deep fried or otherwise, in tasty sauce be my guest, but I'd rather eat good food that doesn't need to be covered up by some sauce, or even worse, ranch salad dressing. If you have to put ranch on something that isn't a salad, or a raw vegetable every time you eat it ,your review should start off with, " I'm not a good person to ask, but I think I'm gonna do my best Robert Irvine impression anyway. I know I should probably just stay out of this conversation, but Yelp gave me the green light to share my uneducated opinion about food and probably service." You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but what makes you think you should help direct an innocent visitor to a lackluster meal and some mylanta is beyond me. Also, If you think you can truly tell how clean a restaurant's kitchen is by looking at a restaurant's bathroom as well as dump ranch or some other sauce or condiment on everything you eat, then delete the probably from the previous quotation, then go home and look at your kitchen. Then go look at your bathroom and tell me this holds true if you aren't a college student or a pig. You should , and I hope you do, clean your kitchen and dishes after every meal or at least every day. Stuff that goes INTO your body comes out of there . Do you clean your toilet after ever deuce, or clean your bathroom and shower every day? I thought not. Do you allow random drunk, or sober guests into your kitchen if you are a restaurant...nope, but the bathroom they can use and destroy every five minutes if they want to. So as I said before, if you think like the forementioned people , go to Blue Baker, ignorance is bliss and you will love it. By the way, sauce is meant to compliment good food and put it over the top and bring it to the next level so to speak.... not be a requirement for every meal. So again, if this is you, and it probably is if you live in College Station, go here ....you will love it. If you know how to cook, and have ever had any professional culinary instruction or attended cooking classes not taught by Paula Dean, skip it. There are cheaper to similarly priced sandwich/pizza places with as good if not better food. Going to some sandwhich/pizza place for their dipping sauce, their trendy build out or their cookies and free wi-fi (which is why I think people may like Blue Baker ) is like eating a sandwhich at Must Be Heaven because you like their pie. Skip the crappy sandwich, make your own lunch and just buy the pie from them if you don't know how to bake something. That being said, Blue Baker makes a decent cookie for the money, but so do the trolls at Nestlé Tollhouse, and they look a hell of a lot happier doing it. One more thing I almost forgot, I talked to the G.M. here extensively and he is the epitome of what you don't want to come off like if and when you ever grow up . NOTORIETY: Gimmicky restaurant (see TIPS below) FOOD: Smoked salmon & cream cheese breakfast sandwich ($4.25 after tax): Conceptually this seemed like an epic sammy. Execution-wise, I was let down. I was let down by the fact that the bagel was a bit on the tough side, the cream cheese was a tad too salty, & it was pricey. They were generous w/ the cream cheese though & the sammy in general was OK. BBQ Chicken Pizza (9" for $8): Out of the 2 pies I tried this was the better one. The crust had a nice chewiness to it, but lacked crispiness to it. The BBQ sauce was a tad too tangy, but overall the pie was pretty good. 3 Meat Pizza (9" for $8): This pie was crispy & had the chewiness of the crust, which was good. However, the meat was kinda dry & salty. Personally, I would not get this pie again. Lobster bisque in a bread bowl ($7.50 after tax): This soup had good lobster flavor. It was creamy & had the right savouriness. The bread bowl itself was ok, w/ a thick outer covering. This soup is tasty. OVERALL: I'll def. pass on the breakfast sammys for next time. I was overcharged immediately after placing the order (checked my account) and when delivery came signed for a different lower amount. When I called manager, he explained that the driver had not returned and my account hadn't been charged yet. But it was. He called back when driver returned and explained that my account was processed at the correct amount. My account reflected the correct amount. Situation happened again on last order. This time I took a screen shot of incorrect overpriced amount charged to my account. When driver came I signed for a different lower amount. My account reflected the lower amount. Top three places in College Station. Their sandwiches are amazing; great bread, fresh meat and vegetables. I have never had the soup, but people seem to enjoy them, and you can have it served in a mammoth bread bowl. They also installed a wood fired oven recently (ha, 2002 I guess) and serve pizzas after 4 or 5. I almost always got the white pizza with chicken. Awesome pizza.
