The Sunset Inn - Front area parking a little tight but doable

    The Sunset Inn

    (33 reviews)

We recently stayed at Sunset Inn in Islamorada and had a mixed experience. On the positive side,…read morethe room was clean and well-maintained, and the check-in process was very smooth and hassle-free, which we appreciated after a long day of travel. However, we felt that the property is quite highly priced for what it offers. Unfortunately, our comfort was affected by a few issues in the room--the bed made noticeable noise even with slight movement, which made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. Additionally, the air conditioner was quite loud, adding to the disturbance. Overall, while the cleanliness and easy check-in were definite positives, the noise issues and pricing did not quite match our expectations.

Well known and respected member of the community, the Sunset Inn was an interesting stay…read more Easy with check-in, parking was a breeze, and the unit was accessible to physically challenged. The hotel itself was very clean, and the room looked like it was recently remodeled. The bed had a European style bottom on it where I kept hitting my ankle and toes. The mattress was kind of soft, but the pillows were really nice and comfortable. The bathroom looked rather old, and the shower itself didn't have a door on it. So you risk getting water onto the bathroom on the floor when you're just taking a normal shower. I liked the rear room door which led to the pool area. The pool was a saltwater type and very inviting. This was a major plus for this Inn. Get the towels from the front office and pick a nice spot around the pool. This area really was well done Shopping is a breeze with the Publix grocery store just one mile south. Many great choices for restaurants are all within 2 miles. There are no places to cook inside the unit, but there is a microwave outback in case you wanna warm something. A small refrigerator is provided along with a coffee maker and Keurig coffee pods. Try not to book a room facing the street, as it gets rather noisy at night. Also, foot traffic during was rather loud up until midnight. There is a great value in staying here as the price for rooms are very reasonable. I think I paid $136 for the night. The two women at check-in were very polite and attentive to my needs. Questions were answered, I think I would stay here again if I didn't have a room up against the highway. Be sure to inquire first.

We stayed at Cheeca Lodge to celebrate our daughter's 7th birthday after having such a wonderful…read moreexperience here last year. We were excited to come back, which made this stay even more disappointing. The first day, I found a dead cockroach in the corner of our room when I went to turn off the floor lamp. Living in South Florida, I know an occasional bug can happen, especially during the rainy season, so I didn't think much of it. The next morning, my wife saw a live cockroach in the bathroom. I killed it and, again, assumed it had simply found its way inside. That night, however, around 1:30 a.m., I got up to use the bathroom and found more than 20 small cockroaches crawling throughout the shower, with others on the bathtub, sink, and bathroom floor. My wife woke up and helped me kill as many as we could. After that, she was so uncomfortable and anxious that she couldn't go back to sleep, worried they would end up in the bed or inside our luggage. The next morning, I went straight to the front desk and spoke with Jessica. She was professional, helpful, and genuinely apologetic. She moved us to Room 207. We packed everything we owned and relocated. Our original reservation was for a suite with a separate bedroom and full kitchen, which we had specifically booked for the extra space and privacy. The replacement room was a standard hotel room with two queen beds. While it wasn't ideal, we understood it was only for one night and accepted it. Unfortunately, once we moved all of our belongings into that room, we discovered it had not been cleaned. There were used towels, garbage still in the trash can, furniture out of place, and even a bloody tissue left in the toilet that had not been flushed. I returned to the front desk and spoke with Jessica again. She immediately apologized and moved us to a third room. Once again, it was a standard oceanfront hotel room rather than the suite we had reserved, but at that point we simply wanted a clean place to stay. Jessica also assured us that management would contact us to discuss the situation and make things right. That never happened. Between dealing with the cockroach infestation, getting almost no sleep, and moving from room to room to room, we lost more than three hours of our vacation. Instead of enjoying our daughter's birthday, we spent the morning packing, unpacking, and worrying about whether insects had gotten into our belongings. What disappointed me the most wasn't just the bugs or even the dirty replacement room--it was the complete lack of follow-up from management. No one ever reached out, despite assuring us they would. Issues can happen at any property. What separates a luxury resort from an average hotel is how those issues are handled. Cheeca Lodge is marketed and priced as an upscale resort, and guests rightfully expect a higher standard of cleanliness, service, and customer care. Unfortunately, that standard was not met during our stay. Jessica deserves recognition for doing everything she could within her authority. She was courteous, empathetic, and tried her best to help. Sadly, the lack of response from management overshadowed her efforts. Upon checkout today I spoke with Jessica and she said that management should had reached out to me yesterday which they did not, and assured us that we would hear from them today which we never did again. We came back because we loved our stay last year. Sadly, this experience has made us seriously reconsider whether we'll return.

Check in was quick, and very friendly with recommendations. Our room was on the second floor again, this time an ocean front and wow - it's worth it. We had the courtyard view last time and it's also a very pretty view - you can't lose. The pool area and bar is so wonderful - very scenic, and the service at the bar is great. They have a great menu for lunch options that they bring out to you. The room was very clean, modern, and spacious. You can request a microwave if you need too! There are bikes, paddle boards, and kayaks for rental for free. Lots of things going on in between the three resorts - we wish we'd had a chance to try the yoga! We will be back for years to come.

After 3 days my wife had to threaten the front desk staff with using towels to wipe her ass if the maids didn't restock the toilet paper in our room. Totally unacceptable for a resort. They kept assuring us the rooms service maids were coming in daily, but they never did until she threatened to come down and make a scene. The staff seemed unmotivated to complete even the basic cleaning tasks. We only asked for two coffee k cups, clean towels and the two room garbage cans to be emptied on a daily basis. That was just too demanding and the staff tried to mean-mug us when we came and went but finally got it done for the final two days of our visit. I'd advise you visit another property because the service is nonexistent and a total disappointment. Their on site restaurant was a joke as well. Completely overpriced and out of touch given the location. Every other restaurant we visited in the area was excellent, but theirs was almost always empty. The menu was way overpriced and there were countless local options that were much better and less expensive. Nearly all the staff on site see to be unwilling to provide service to customers and displaying a shitty attitude overall. Leadership changes need to take place or this property will crumble. Good location, just bad service with inadequate leadership supervision.

You can tell that they really take pride in every area of the property, rooms, pool and grounds. What a joy!! It was a fantastic experience where we could forget about work and enjoy each moment. We had room 4 which was a kitchen, dining area, king size bed, and bathroom located near the dock. It was clean, up kept and we enjoyed our entire time there! The bed was comfortable and it had a nice TV. My husband brought fishing tackle so that he could fish from the dock and was extremely happy!! Next time he plans to bring his small boat so that he can dock it there. Upon our arrival we were greeted and checked in quickly and efficiently. Our questions about the area, restaurants, etc. were answered and he said he was only a text away if we had any questions at all. This was impressive to me and I was grateful. The sunsets were gorgeous and we were happy we brought our camera. We did not use the pool or the many hammocks and chairs on the grounds but we're happy they were there. We enjoyed the dock and porch area just outside our room and we are looking forward to coming back next year! This resort does not charge for parking or a resort fee which we appreciated and is located 10 to 15 minutes from a Publix in case you would like to purchase items for the kitchen. CVS is near the Publix too. This is a wonderful old style Florida resort that doesn't nickel and dime you for everything. We already have reservations for next year!
