We loved the Blue Mussel Cafe. The food and the drinks were supremely good, but the service was exceptional. We were waited on by Kelly. She was not only a very attentive waitress, she had so much sparkle as a person, she made our whole evening fun. We had the fish and crackerboard appetizer, the pickles and gravlax were particularly good, we split a salad which had beets and candied nuts which was also good, but the salad dressing was remarkable. My husband had the lobster Thermador, and I had the halibut. We had ordered too much food but had our leftovers the next day for mid-morning. Both my husband and I can't recommend the Blue Mussel enough. It made our stay in North Rustico very memorable. read more

On our way to cavendish on Wednesday, August 9, we took a detour to North Rustico to the Blue Mussel Cafe to devour our body's weight in lobster and halibut. The restaurant provides a quaint, friendly, costal environment. Julian (Jules) was remarkably friendly and welcoming, and provided us incredible table service...making our visit truly memorable. We were also delightedly impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of the food. We had lobster and halibut and the halibut had been caught fresh that morning. Yummy! This was such a pleasant dining experience! Ambience 5/5 The inside is bright and has a maritime wharf look and feel to it. I'm pretty sure this is family run, too, but don't quote me on that. The menus are on clipboards and it's obvious that they know how to be a good host. We sat by the windows which provided us the perfect view of the ocean/harbor -- whatever that was. Food 5/5 Everything is homemade. When we talked to one of the owners and asked how they made such good food she replied "just a little TLC"! Seriously, it's good. If you're disappointed then you're a weirdo. I got the Seafood Bake and it was stuffed with great things! I can I got at least 10 good sized scallops in there along with some good bites of lobster. As a vegetarian stuck in seafood heaven, Blue Mussel Cafe did an awesome job with their Vegan Mushroom Wellington. It was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was laidback. I got on the waiting list through the Yelp app, checked in with the hostess then walked around. The restaurant will send a text when your table is available so you aren't lingering. Between the time we put ourselves in the wait line and when our food actually arrived, it was over 3.5 hours. The frustrating part is when we were told 15 minutes four times. Waited 1.5 hours for entrees. Food is nice but really not worth the wait, unfortunately. Tourist trap. *EDIT: After speaking to the manager about our experience, he took off our entrees and also gave us a gift certificate for the trouble. Seemed like such a cool spot when we first arrived - we were planning our island adventure to do a take 2 at this spot!!! Took so long to get served - other tables that came after us got food way before us and we were a simple table of 2. My husband's food was good - my salad was super. Was recommended the halibut - it was way over cooked -and terribly dry - the potatoes were over cooked and screaming hot -- beets and Brussels we pretty raw and barely warm. Great atmosphere at this lively spot in North Rustico PEI. Super charming. Food was well executed and the service was good EXCEPT... after doing my research on the availability of a kids menu on their website and Yelp, and driving across the island to dinner, we were immediately greeted at the door with "the kids menu isn't available at dinner, is that ok?" Well no, it isn't. But we will manage. They even refused to just provide plain pasta -- even if I was willing to pay the $16 for it. I just wish they had had some indication that kid options weren't available and I would have gone elsewhere. We ended up with stale potato wedges. Were it not for their lack of kid friendly options at dinner (and not indicating that anywhere on their website) I would be giving them 4-5 stars. Afterwards we headed to Richards and snagged a kid friendly meal for our little traveler. I really wanted to love this place. Just wished EVERYONE in our party could have enjoyed the food. read more

It took us about 50 mins to be seated and it helped that we used the Yelp wait list feature vs just showing up and waiting. 2. We sat outside. What a view. What an experience. Do it if you can. 3. We are from NYC. We dont impress easily. None of my other meals while visiting PEI were anything to write home about. Except for this. I wanted to stay here forever. 4. Get the smoked chatcuterie board. Just get it, ok. 5. Super fresh oysters. No surprise but hey... and Ive had bigger oysters in NYC but these were possibly the freshest I've ever tasted. 6. Seafood bubbly bake. OMGAWD. 7. Chocolate potato cake. Yes, really. Now if you have a massive sweet tooth this isnt for you. I dont and for me, this was perfection. One of the worst dining experiences of my life! The 20 minute wait turned into well over an hour, I had to pay 3 separate times and my food was barely edible ! I ordered the haddock and the plate appeared with 2 slices of fish piled on top of the veggies and the fish was coated with a greenish brown substance that was salty and awful to eat. The 400 dollar tab was vastly overpriced for food that any take out establishment would be ashamed to serve. My wife sent hers back but I did not want to impose on an already overworked serving staff. This is my first review of a restaurant as I am usually satisfied with most anything. read more

Just as awesome as I remembered! I visited in 2016 on a cold, overcast, drizzly day in 2016 and have fond memories of a seafood bake lunch on the patio. Today was a sunny, hot day and I'm with my family of 6. At 12:22p we put our name on the list from the National Park (text message link showed an approx. 35-55 minute wait) and headed to the restaurant. The restaurant was packed and it was tough to find parking. There was a long line to check-in and when we made it to the front of the check in line we were told they called us already and had to move on but we remained in queue on the list. For reference, it was 30 minutes since I first put our name on the list. We waited another 10 minutes at that point for a table, so their system seems to work well. The service was excellent, prompt, friendly, and attentive. The wait staff was hopping busy but we were very well taken care of. The food was excellent. We enjoyed the pan fried halibut, the chicken Lick'n sandwich, the linguini with chicken and bacon, and the lobster roll. We sampled several non-alcoholic beverages including lemonade and strawberry lemonade that were listed as ingredients in fancy cocktails. My lobster roll was incredibly tasty and I'm glad I waited to indulge my lobster roll craving here at the end of our trip. I knew it was going to be great. The potato salad was delicious, too. My niece is not a mushroom or seafood eater and she enjoyed the linguini so much that she didn't notice that there were mushrooms in it. She took home her leftovers--so it must have been delicious. read more

The restaurant is in the beautiful seaside village of North Rustico. It's a lovely place for a walk along the water. The Blue Mussel Cafe is fantastic! They are always busy, but they have a great system of a buzzer that lets you know when your tables free. The menu is full of seafood ( obviously), my personal favourite is the Bubbly Bake. Fish is a hard dish to cook especially on a grill. Leave it too long on the grill then it becomes dry. Leave it on the grill too short then you might as well have sushi. Blue Mussel Cafe knows how to grill fishes. The salmon I had was a bit bland, but cooked perfect. I didn't care much for mixing my cold salad in the same plate with my grilled salmon. But I guess that's how they serve it. Overall, the food is good. Minus one star because we came for lobster. They ran out of lobster. read more

My entire family agreed that these were the best lobster rolls we have ever had.. and we eat A LOT of lobster rolls. In fact, just looking at the photo I took of my roll makes me want to go back. Would have probably been a five star review but the place was absolutely packed and we sadly couldn't even get on a reasonable waitlist to eat in the restaurant. We didn't even think to get a reservation figuring that the place was kind of in the middle of nowhere on the north side of the island and we were visiting after the lunch rush. Luckily they had a little trailer out front selling lobster rolls and one or two other items from the restaurant and a small first come first serve seating area with pretty views. They were out of all the beers and seltzer waters at the trailer which was fine but I would have enjoyed a nice cold beverage with my lobster roll had they had better stock. Would absolutely go back if we ever visit PEI again and perhaps visit on a hopefully quieter week day with a reservation. read more

Would actually give 4.5/5 This restaurant definitely lives up to the hype. We went during shoulder season and were lucky to get a table without any wait, but during high season, be prepared for a bit of a line! The service was excellent, with our waitress being very knowledgeable about the menu. During our visit, multiple workers came by to ask if everything was okay and if we needed anything, which was a nice touch. 5/5 In terms of food - seafood chowder, with a side biscuit: probably the best chowder we had on our trip. Very flavourful and creamy. Only downfall was the size was quite small for the price ($10). Also, the biscuit wasn't warmed up prior to serving, so it was lacking the flakiness and fluffiness you'd expect with homemade biscuit. 4.5/5 - Lobster roll, served with side of potato salad: very nice and light flavour. The potato salad was really nice. My only wish was that the bun should've been toasted or warmed up a bit, felt a bit hard/dry. 4.5/5 - Halibut: was told this was freshly caught that morning. Was a nice thick cut, served with potatoes on the side. Was told it'd be medium cooked, but felt it may have been overdone a bit as it was a bit dry in the middle. The seasoning they had on the crust was excellent though! Perhaps a thinner cut with more of the seasoning on the fish would have helped. The potatoes also could have used a bit more flavour/seasoning. 4/5 We got a drink which was a house pager mixed with strawberry syrup, and it was very refreshing. Overall would recommend! read more
