Really cool upstairs restaurant, bar, and outdoor patio. I thought the European inspired decor made for a nice ambience. The food itself I felt was a little hit or miss given the prices - we enjoyed the escargot but it was very very buttery (not mad), other appetizers were solid too. For mains I got the Paella which was a good portion size but a little bland. I tried a few bites of the Beef Stroganoff and enjoyed that more. All the desserts - cheesecake, tiramisu, and pistachio cake were awesome. Cocktails were decent too, though when I ordered their G&T off their menu, they brought me a normal/plain Gin and Tonic - so make sure you're careful when you order! read more

An exploration of Eastern Europe flavors. I had dined here when they first opened and it was not good. So I've given them time to get the kitchen up to speed. And it has paid off as the food is good. A fellow diner at our table remarked that their Bloody Nary was excellent and that Blue Tuba makes their own mix. Cocktails are an important component of any dining experience here. Don't ignore the cocktails. Czech "margarita" with slivovicz. The photo shows a classic kolaç, made like back in the day, in the old country. Not that meat filled doughnut tiff at the doughnut shops around town. I know that it is safe to drink but I'd suggest patrons to just order a Topo when here, instead, and skip the tap water. Mac and cheese with a nice, Gouda smokiness. Here at Blue Tuba, they default to a pierogi recipe. With delicious sautéed onions. The Czech knedlik . Similar to a Polish pierogi. While pierogi are typically filled dumplings, the term "knedlíky" in Czech cuisine often refers to a variety of dumplings, including both filled and unfilled types. They are a staple side dish, especially the bread or potato dumplings that are served with sauce-heavy meat dishes. However, there are also sweet versions filled with fruit, plum jam, or other sweet fillings, which are more similar in form and function to a pierogi. One specific type of sweet Czech dumpling that is very similar to a pierogi is called ovocné knedlíky (fruit dumplings) or bramborové taštičky (potato pockets/dumplings). These are often made from potato dough and filled with things like plum jam or fresh fruit, then topped with ingredients like poppy seeds, sugar, and melted butter. Came here for Tapas Tuesday and we were pleasantly satisfied with our dishes. My personal favs included the schnitzel, the fried eggplant, the pierogi, the duck fat fries, the Serbian meat thingy, and the fried cauliflower. Novel concept here that has some issues with execution. Can be a little difficult to find the entrance if you're looking from the street side. You'll need to circle around back and then head up stairs. You're greeted by a fun Texas neon over a map of Europe. It's a fun touch, but the space seems to be confused between a very Pub-esque bar area and a more traditional dining space that has an awkwardly placed music stage. Menu isn't a big as it could be with the promise of trying a taste of Europe. Our waiter just wasn't as knowledgeable as we would've liked, not sure how familiar with the various cuisines offered he was. I think with this kinda of restaurant you want to be able to make some recommendations from a place of experience. The food was just disappointing in general. The fried items like fritters and schnitzel obviously are hard to mess up, but they lacked salt and flavor. The big offender was the "Spanish paella", not about the dish was paella. Small plate of electric yellow and wet rice. It's something I was more familiar with that made me think the things I wasn't familiar with were probably equally as unrepresentative. We visited Blue Tuba for lunch service on a weekday. Located in the Heights, the entrance was actually quite out of the way and in the Torchy's parking lot. Dining is on the second floor; the interior felt a bit empty and casual. The menu looked like a mix of European / Eastern European cuisine. Our waiter did not help much with explaining the menu or going into the variety of different styles of dishes on the menu so we just went to order a bunch of different options. We tried a variety of appetizers; mussels/ fries (3/5), escargot (3/5), cauliflower fritters (3/5), and Serbian cevapici (2/5). Most of the dishes are a new dish to try; the appetizers tasted a bit pre-made / executed a bit below expectations. We also got the schnitzel (3/5), chicken paprikash (3/5), and Spanish paella (1/5) as main dishes to try family style. The large variety of different cuisines (Spanish, German, Polish, etc etc) seemed to take away from the taste and quality of the dishes from any particular cuisine. The dishes felt like a fairly shallow presentation of a common dish from each country. There is definitely appeal to this but it seemed to take away from the quality of any particular dish. The Spanish paella in particular was extremely bland, with a soggy rice texture, and what was clearly a reheated dish (rice was stuck in sticky clumps). I want to preface this to say that I've spent a lot of time in eastern Germany, as my adoptive family is German. To start, we entered to find the hostess on her phone, and she immediately asked if we had a reservation (we did, but I was a tad bit put off by her greeting, or lack thereof). Our waiter wasn't much better, to be honest. So service was mediocre, and unfriendly. But that's not why we came. We ordered the appetizer sampler, a Schweinshaxe, and schnitzel. I was disappointed to find that the sampler came with French's mustard and a canned sauerkraut. The cauliflower fritters were undercooked and hard, and the pierogis were a frozen product-- dumpling stuffed with instant potatoes. I wish I could say that it stopped there, however. The schnitzel was the same, coming with room temp potato salad that tasted like it was from the Walmart deli, and the cucumber salad just tasted of cucumbers, cucumber juice, and canola oil. Neither of which are even close to the flavor profile of the actual dishes. The schnitzel itself was tough and the breading was wholly incorrect and reminded me of fish stick breading. The mushroom juice it came with was just that-- it tasted like mushrooms and water. No salt. No seasoning at all. The Schweinshaxe. *sigh* This is perhaps one of my favorite foods to order in a European restaurant. It was served over another round of instant mashed potatoes and packet gravy. More canned sauerkraut. The outside was gooey and soft, not crispy as a true Schweinshaxe is. The inside was again tough, I had to use a knife to cut it. For me, this was more than just my experience as a chef-- but the expectation came from my upbringing and family. And it was an epic let down. Our bill came out to $123, and we will never be back. Met up with some family members at Blue Tuba for Houston restaurant week brunch. My cousin had somewhere to go right after so they wanted a place close to their house. This is a European restaurant in the heights area. They have a plenty of parking space as well as rooftop seating. The brunch set comes with 2 courses, a starter and an entree. I got the Slovak mac and cheese (spaetzle) and the polish breakfast. The spaetzle was made with mini dumplings, four cheese, and bacon. The spaetzle was only good at first because it was hot but as you eat more and it cools off, it's actually pretty bland. The polish breakfast was a polish hash that includes roasted potatoes, onions, peppers, smoked kielbasa, as well as fried eggs and a side salad. The overall meal was just mediocre. It just felt like eating regular sausage and eggs that you could make at home. My aunt got the Hungarian goulash hash and said it was bland and the meat was dry. Been to Germany multiple times and schnitzel tasted so bland, was so thin, and not even close to what is even authentic. Literally had to season our own food, which, IMO should have been the chef's job. Platter was just cut up cucumbers and potato salad - terrible portion sizes all around. Bottom line up-front: delicious European culinary delights served by an attentive and knowledgeable staff in a fun environment. My family is Hungarian and one thing I've missed in Houston since Covid has been a restaurant that serves good Hungarian food. Charivari was really good and their chef was excellent, but they didn't survive and there's been a lack of any really excellent Euro-based restaurants. Blue Tuba rights that wrong. I ordered the Moja Draha (a cherry slivovic drink) which was absolutely amazing and followed it with my lunch, a staple Hungarian dish called Chicken Paprikash (English spelling). I will always order that dish as a barometer of how good their ethnic food is, and it didn't disappoint. As a matter of fact, it thrilled. I'm very critical of this dish as it's a family favorite and I make it myself, but this is the first one outside of Hungary that matched my own. While the galuska (what Germans call spaetzle) was a little salty, I will forgive that. It was absolutely delicious. Did I mention the excellent service? I was excited to try this place after seeing lots of rave about it on social media. And a good way to kick off Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024! We came on a Thursday night with no reservation and were able to get seated right away. First of all, this restaurant is tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood area within the Heights. They have a huge parking lot with additional parking down the street, which is pretty rare for the area. You walk in through an automatic sliding door like in a grocery store and walk upstairs to get to the restaurant. The vibe is very cute. Beautifully decorated throughout. We were seated at a table and even though my friend faced the restaurant I faced the wall, they have a giant mirror on the wall so I could still people watch! We opted for the HRW dinner menu, which was $39 for an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For my appetizer, I got the moules frites aka mussels and fries, a Belgian staple. I hadn't had this in maybe a decade since going to La Frite in San Antonio. For my entree, I got the schnitzel. I haven't had schnitzel since being in Fredericksburg, so I was excited to get this. Schnitzel came out perfect: meat was pounded thin and tender to cut through. And there was just the right amount of breading that added the perfect crisp. It came with a side of sliced cucumbers and potato salad, which balanced the meat nicely since they were served chilled. And the portion was HUGE! I could only eat half and took the other half to-go. The regular menu states that the mushroom gravy is $4 extra, otherwise you only get the bare schnitzel with no sauce. The HRW menu online also stated this, but the HRW menu in the restaurant made no mention of the gravy option. When I asked our server, he mentioned it is included on the HRW portion, however when I got my food, there was no gravy. So I asked for it and it took them about 10 minutes to bring it out...I didn't want to wait for my meat to get cold, so I started eating, and the gravy finally came out when I was about 1/3 way through. A little inconsistency here, but not a major inconvenience. And for dessert, I got the tiramisu. Taste was on-par with other tiramisu's I've had. Texture was just right: moist and spongey. Presentation was beautiful - they dusted the plate and left an imprint of a fork, simple yet pretty. My friend ordered the creme brûlée for her dessert, but about 20 minutes after ordering, our server informed us that they were out of the creme brûlée. This was a little surprising since it was normal dinner time at 7pm, but perhaps they did not anticipate the demand for this dessert as part of HRW. For my drink, I got the old fashioned, my go-to, and my friend got the Strawberry Fields mocktail. It took a little while for the drinks to come out. My drink tasted a little watered down, which was a bit disappointing since I like OF's for the bourbon taste. They do promote on social media their happy hour from 5-10pm, but our server informed me that that's only for the bar and patio and not the dining room. As hinted above, service was a little spotty. While our server was attentive and checked on us and kept our waters filled, food did come out a little slow. The table next to us put in their order right before ours, but it seemed like their food came out way earlier than ours did. I might credit all of this, again, to it being the first night of HRW. But if you are doing the HRW menu, I would budget ~2 hours in your schedule. Overall this was a great spot, and definitely a nice addition to the Heights. Something very different that fuses together multiple European cuisines, which surprisingly is harder to find in Houston. I'd say this is a great deal for HRW. On the normal menu, the schnitzel is $32 and the moules frites is $18, so you definitely get the bang for your buck at $39 including a dessert. read more

To enjoy more of Houston restaurant weeks, we stopped by Blue Tuba with our couple friends. There seems to be plentiful parking behind the restaurant, including on the street, which is a nice perk in the bustling Heights. Helpful tip: you enter from the rear near the parking lot. It's easy to miss and walk around to the front. There are sliding doors and then you make your way up a short flight of stairs to the restaurant. In terms of the quality of food, taste, presentation, and portion, I'd rate the night a 3.5/5. The polish taco with sausage was my starter, the goulash was my main course, and the lemon bar was my dessert. The taco was a bit messy and the tortilla was difficult to hold, but the flavor of the kielbasa sausage was good, and reminded me a bit of my grandmother's peppers and onions. The goulash was under seasoned, but the beef was tender and I had plenty leftover for lunch the next day. The lemon bar was just ok, but not really a wow factor. Our server was friendly but they took quite a long time to check in and it was a bit awkward when we were ready to pay. I did enjoy the ambiance of the dining room and thought the food was fine, but at the price point per diner ($39 approx for this particular menu.), I think there is some room for improvement. read more

I randomly found out about this place just a few days ago and finally made a trip here last night. I ordered the Chicken Paprikash for the entree and also purchased two orders of their 3-Piece Pierogi appetizer togo. The entree was meaty, flavorful, mild in spices, starchy enough, buttery, oily and very delicious. The chicken was dark meat thankfully as well as so tender and juicy in every bite. It seemed like it was braised in how it was cooked. Very good chicken with a nicely aromatic sauce that seemed to have a great blend of onion, paprika, stock and more. It was kind of like an au ju in a way. The spaetzle was buttery, moist, soft and cooked thoroughly. Being part Polish myself, I haven't found luck finding any pierogi that aren't in the frozen section of a grocery store, which don't count imo. Pollonia was great when I had them years ago n closed recently. There was supposedly a place that sold pierogi out in the Clear Lake area that closed years ago too. This place even saved me from having to order an expensive pack using GoldBelly. They were very delicious, doughy, had a good amount of filling and a great, sweet oniony vibe all in one. The oil they cooked them in was very good and helped bring out the overall taste. The service from everyone I came across being my server / bartender possibly, busboy and managers / owners was very welcoming, hospitable, friendly and efficient. We are still waiting for our first course to drop. Our waitress noticed the lack of food, made a brief apology and said it was coming. The hostess came by and asked us if we would like a another round of cocktails. Sure! But we'd like to change one of them. 10 minutes later (and still no food) the cocktails come out, but it was a repeat of our original order. We sent it back. Our waitress showed up a few moments later and says that she is told there is a problem. We explain the cocktail mix up, she goes off to take care of it, the right cocktails arrive, still no food. She offers another apology and something about being really backed up. Interestingly, folks who had arrived after us were already dining. Our first course arrives (staggered). Another 30 minutes before our main course arrives (staggered, as well). The salad was a bit wilted, but the rest of the food was very tasty. Sadly, good food is literally overwhelmed by inept service and execution. It looks like we were not the only ones to have experienced the restaurant in this way. Not terrible, but not good either. The food lacked proper execution. It honestly tasted like food prepared by people who did not know what it was supposed to taste like. We went for brunch on a recent Saturday. We were greeted upon arrival and were told we could sit anywhere we chose since it wasn't very busy. The weather was nice so we opted for the outside balcony. The service was prompt and friendly. I was eager to try the Hungarian dishes since I've eaten home made Hungarian foods as a child. After recently returning to Houston from a memorable trip through Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest, my wife and I were eager to relive our European culinary adventures. We hoped The Blue Tuba would deliver that authentic experience, especially as we chose it for our Christmas Eve dinner. The restaurant's atmosphere was excellent, and the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming. Our evening started off on a positive note with drinks and appetizers. However, as we waited for our main courses, my wife pointed out a sign reading "Euro-Tex," and I couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment. Our salad arrived first, but it was chopped so finely that it barely resembled a Caesar salad. For my main course, I ordered the Beef Stroganoff. While the flavors were acceptable, the portion size was surprisingly small for the $32 price tag. The dish was also overwhelmed by canned mushrooms, which detracted from the fresh, authentic flavors I had enjoyed abroad. Although we initially considered returning to try other menu items, the underwhelming salad and stroganoff made me hesitant to spend another $30 on the Goulash. Unfortunately, the food simply did not capture the incredible cuisine we had experienced in Europe the week before. In summary, The Blue Tuba Euro-Tex might be a great spot for those who haven't dined in Budapest or Prague, looking for that authentic European taste, for me, however, it felt like another "-Tex" twist that missed the mark. The atmosphere was great, and our patio dinner made for a pleasant evening, but the food wasn't what I was hoping for. Everything was perfect. I had chicken paprikas and last time I was there I had the veal schnitzel. Both excellent. Also the potato salad is to kill for. An interesting wine list of Eastern European selections. The Bulgarian red from Thrace was very palatable. I can't wait to go there again . Delightful and delicious new restaurant in Harold's old spot (upstairs only). We have been twice now and everything was tasty and well thought out. The owners and staff were very welcoming and informative. The Slovak Mac & Cheese was fantastic and the Mussels were fresh, perfectly cooked, with crostinis to soak up the lovely wine sauce! The second trip we had Couscousotto and Hungarian Goulash, both yummy choices. This is a perfect spot for dinner before a show at Heights Theatre! read more

Blue tuba is an affordable fun date night spot! We went on a Friday night and there was a singer and pianist! The drinks were amazing! My fiance got the smoke mirrors which is now one of his favorite drinks he has ever had. It had a mezcal flavor with a hint of pineapple and was not sweet. I had the Rosemary whiskey smash which was good too but not quite as special as the smoke mirrors Food wise, we started out with mac n cheese. It tasted homemade and was delicious. We split the pork schnitzel and coucousotto. I would highly recommend getting the mushroom sauce for the pork schnitzel. The dish was cooked perfectly but the mushroom sauce really elevated it. The couscousotto was our favorite of the night. The flavor was delicious, but there are a lot of textures going on in the dish (it has brisket, filet, shrimp with couscous). Overall, it is a great place to pop in for a casual date night! read more

Nothing ruins a restaurant experience faster than a group of 4-5, 8 year-old girls running in and out of tables while their parents enjoy their quiet convo. That's the problem with some restaurants if you choose to eat before 9:00pm in the summer. Other than that, good restaurant weeks menu, and the food was good. Would I go again? No - because of the atmosphere. read more
