We were a bit lost and kind of just happen to run onto this awesome place! Very nice young man greeted us and I saw the salted caramel but was a bit apprehensive to get it because the last time I had it at Molly Moon I was disappointed. I had two scoops in a freshly made waffle cone and that was so delicious! My boyfriend had the peanut butter and vanilla bean in a waffle cone as well. He said it was awesome! I wish they would open more stores around Bellevue. the smell emanating from bluebird is as captivating as birdsong, so i see the reason for the name. it's honestly difficult to pass by without partaking. the service is always with a smile (and probably some witty punny jokes), and their flavors are rich and full. definitely a delight, every time. their old fremont location was one of the first spots i ever ate at in seattle when visiting back in the day, and i'm glad to live so close to their current spot. thanks for keeping me full of good ice cream, y'all! read more

Even though this spring is one of those classic dumb, cold, windy, wet, cold, wet, windy, cold Seattle springs, we had an ice cream hankering and a special occasion to celebrate...so, we paid a little visit to Bluebird on Phinney Ridge. The sun made a brief cameo and shined through the nice west-facing windows and warmed us up a little, just in time to dive into some frozen treats. Frozen treats on this occasion were a couple of double-scoops in waffle cones, but not until we had deliberated over the dozen-plus options on the menu board. I wavered quite a bit...the Morning Glory chai was calling out to me like a vegan siren...but in the end I went with snickerdoodle and marionberry, while GF got a scoop of chocolate and a scoop of salted caramel. The snickerdoodle-marionberry combo was like eating a giant serving of pie a la mode, and I really loved the cinnamon in the snickerdoodle. Their ice cream seems very sweet...I thought I heard the server telling another customer that they use the same amount of sugar that most ice creameries use, but that you can taste the sugar more because they use lower milk fat...? I dunno, I couldn't really hear over the sound of myself eating. But I can tell you that the little boy sitting a few tables over was getting more than his daily allowance of sugar...he had chocolate ice cream all over his face and by the time his family was ready to leave, he was giggling and bouncing up and down like a super ball. Bluebird has a nice variety of vegan flavors, of which I plan to avail myself at some point. Extra thumbs for partnering with local companies to create flavors--I noticed Remlinger Farms, Theo Chocolate, Chaco Canyon, Morning Glory and Caffe Vita, and I'm probably forgetting one or two. Check out the cool merch...the embroidered bluebird on the beanie hat is especially awesome...its eyeball makes it look like it's totally deranged...or maybe it's just all juned up on sugar too like that little kid was. AMAZING, AMAZING! Sometimes I come across an ice cream that has amazing flavor, but it is overly sweet, so you get a couple bites in and you get tired of it. This was so perfect! I could not stop. I ordered the Snickerdoodle with chocolate sprinkles. It was a great combo for me, the milky ice cream contrasted with the tiny crunch of the sprinkles. I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the place and the overall vibe. They have a nice layout and selection of souvenir-type items. I ordered a chocolate malted milkshake. It was the proper consistency- neither so thick that you would need a spoon the consume it, nor so thin that you might as well went to Starbucks and ordered a Frappuccino. Taste-wise, it tasted how a scratch-made malted milkshake should taste, as opposed to something made from premix. It came with a blue-striped paper straw, which was a nice touch. Never have I ever... been to an ice creamery that also is a brewery until Bluebird and my life has been much improved since I discovered this gem! How could you not fall in love with their homemade ice creams and beer, especially in the wonderful form of a beer float?! They are always pumping out freshly made waffle cones hot off the press and I always get one with my beer float and eat it like chips n' dip. YUM. Their service is consistently amazing. They are never skimpy with their samples to make sure you end up getting something that you're happy with! The people that work here are friendly, funny, and personable. AND as a lover of dark beer living in a city with drink menus polluted with IPAs (and double IPAs for diversity), it was seriously refreshing to see a menu with dark beer options! Bluebird, you make my heart sing! Everytime I get a taste of your delicious ice cream, my outlook on life becomes brighter and my days become happier. I am a self diagnosed lactose intolerant person. I know, I know! I sound so silly! But I honestly feel like everytime I get a taste of dairy, it's like that scene from White Chicks where Marlon Wayans can't hold it down in the bathroom! With that being said, the fact that Bluebird serves Horchata, one of my favorite ice cream flavors, vegan style, they've already won my heart over. Of course there are times where I just cave and I'm curious to know what other delicious flavors they serve. To their Snickerdoodle and their Pistachio, it is worth the stomach space AND the stomach pain! The Snickerdoodle is just sooo creamy. I love getting this and a scoop of Horchata to intermix the two. Their cinnamon flavor profiles go together like holy matrimony. The Pistachio is probably my favorite right now. The cream reminds me of cream cheese frosting and I just looooove how they have huge chunks of pistachio nuts distributed amongst the mixture. No food coloring in this bad boy! I heard that Bluebird served Horchata Ice Cream so I made it a point to come out here to try it out. I came in for the Horchata but I left with Snickerdoodle. Sounds like a romance story gone bad, but let me tell you why I ended up with Snickerdoodle. I came in all excited with the thought of how creamy and delicious Horchata was going to taste, but it fell terribly short. It wasn't creamy, it wasn't smooth and rich. It was actually kind of tart and tasted nothing like Horchata. I. was. catfished! Perhaps it's because it's vegan and made with coconut milk instead. It just wasn't the same. (nothing wrong with vegan) Then I tried the intriguing flavor of Snickerdoodle and this tasted more like how I envisioned Horchata to taste like. It was smooth, creamy, and packed with cinnamon flavor. Oh how my taste buds danced! It was a match that was destined to be. So in the end I left with Snickerdoodle and not Horchata. The End. Prices are reasonable, the storefront is small, cozy, and very cute. It has a lot of vintage/antique furnishings that give this place a unique vibe. The line was out the door and curving around the corner when I left. This place seems very popular and I am excited to come back and try more flavors!! read more

They just started brewing their own beer a few weeks ago, and it seems like they might be the only ones around making beer and ice cream and not doing anything else. They're pretty good at both. You should check 'em out. This is a busy little section of Greenwood Avenue, with tons of businesses sitting right together. Bluebird has the corner spot right across from the 74th St Ale House. When you pull up, depending on how bright a day it is, it can be kinda tough to tell whether they're open. Inside, they have a charming space, with a tilted ceiling of exposed wood. There are a couple little tables made from old milk jugs, and one sideboard with a couple stools. Behind the counter, there are chalkboards listing all the pop flavors, beers, and ice creams. Their ice cream is really good; I love ice cream but I came in only for beer yesterday. I had the Theo Chocolate Milk Stout, which was sweet but not overly sweet, with a nice amount of body and not too much ABV. The service was friendly and the prices were fair. They serve the beer in jelly jars, which isn't as cute as it sounds, and they freeze the jelly jars before they serve, which isn't that cute, either. But the beer's good and it doesn't mess up the serving too much. I'd definitely come back. read more

This is the kind of place you want to root for. Perched on a corner in a sweet little neighborhood business district. On sunny days they are one of several shops that throw their garage-style front door open for quasi/outdoor seating. Their frozen treats are studded with local faves like vita coffee, theo chocolate, and cb peanuts. At the holidays, they partner with the pie shop up the street for frozen holiday pies. It's everything I love about Seattle x^10. I hesitate a bit here because everyone who works here is really, really, nice. But these guys have absolutely failed to figure out how to efficiently run this shop. 93% of the time whoever is working behind the counter is dying in the weeds. Exhausted by the relentless crowds. There seems to be this weird culture where, at shift change, the relief scooper shows up and the person leaving abandons them with a gleeful, "good luck dude, you're pretty much effed" followed by a flounce out the door. On a recent visit the pot of hot fudge was empty. The cones were burning. The scooper tried to get the can of fudge open, only to find the only can opener wasn't working. Meanwhile, the crowd stretched out the door and had started to turn the corner around the block. Several folks in line took pity on the poor scooper and tried to help open the can, to no avail. Normally you'd rightly be frustrated, as a customer, by the glacial speed of service... but, on this day, you'd have to be a psychopath not to simply feel bad for this poor girl who was clearly totally overwhelmed by scooping cones, making cones, ringing people up, etc. I think they'd sell a lot more ice cream if they solved this problem. Also- I really wish they had a kid size cone. The portions are ginormous. read more

No matter, Matt B. and I petted a fellow customer's corgi puppy while Ashleigh B. toiled behind the counter to get everyone their ice cream. We ordered beer floats made with Theo chocolate milk stout and coffee ice cream. The stout is apparently brewed in-house with Theo chocolate, and it is pretty incredible. The coffee ice cream is a good scoop to mix in. This was a perfect treat for a hot afternoon. If you like ice cream and beer, Bluebird is a great place to indulge. read more

The service is slow because of its popularity and always one person working but if you don't mind the wait and the disheveled line this place is a good stop. read more

As someone who's lactose intolerant, my dairy choices become very important. I've always been a bit stubborn and believed that a little ice cream never hurt anyone. Okay, not true in my case but I continue to make an exception for Bluebird. My mind is blown by the quality of the ice cream. My favorite is Cafe Vita, followed closely by Theo Chocolate, and rounded out by Horchata. I've seen others discuss the fact that the ice cream comes from Capitol Hill and hasn't been fresh. That hasn't been my experience but it may just be the luck of the draw. I haven't tried any of the brews so I feel unqualified to comment on those. The space itself is comforting but small. There are just a handful of tables (3 tables) and a bar. Even last week, when it was mildly warm in Seattle, the line at Bluebird was out the door. Of all the times I've been to this location, there have only been two occasions that I was able to stay and have a seat with my 3-person family. All of the other times, we've had to leave because of lack of space. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and patient. Parking is terrible. read more

This is smaller than the flagship store over in Capitol Hill and will soon serve beer here. However, coming back trying to get such good service and fun experience has been sad. The younger girl working snapped at our kids when one of them got too close and the counter. When we asked questions she replied tersely "there's a menu in front of you." When we asked for a receipt, without apology, she literally snapped "we don't do that." I went with four other people so I got to try three other flavors of the ice cream. You know how they say the grass is greener on the other side? My side was better. I had the famous snickerdoodle one. Everyone had pretty good ice cream as well but mine by far was the best. It had the cinnamon and sugar taste. No cookie pieces needed in this!!! Silky, smooth texture and rich in flavor. When the ice cream touches your tongue, you can taste the creaminess of what an ice cream is supposed to be. The place is small and quaint. Only one guy serving and checking us out and making the waffles. He still managed to be kind and grateful. I will make another trip to this place when I come to Seattle again!!! Dropped by last week with a friend, my first time here. Hubs got chocolate chunk, I sampled strawberries and cream, horchata, and peanut butter. Was undecided between horchata and peanut butter. Cool thing is I didn't have to decide! First place I've been to that I notice a split scoop, which is great since I'm forever back and forth between flavors and usually can't finish two whole scoops. Chocolate was amazing, my combo shot was a bit of a mistake and the flavors were both good, but not "wow" enough to hold up against each other. Counter guy was in a good mood and friendly, it's a nice little spot. I wish the horchata had a little more oomph and they had maybe one or two more memorable flavors on the menu. read more

Ok, so BlueBird Icecream makes a pretty darn good icecream, sourcing local ingredients that are premium (I refer here primarily to the THEO Chocolate, which is the main yummy in the Theo Chocolate Chunk icecream. The Theo folks understand both good chocolate and fairtrade, and in my book, that's key. Oh, and the taste is fabulous! In icecream or not! The chocolate scoop paired well with the Marionberry Icecream - another page from my book? You can't go wrong with chocolate and berries... The line might be a bit awkward as it winds out the door, and then you have to squeeze by the eager fans to actually leave the shop. Not a big deal, especially if you can find a seat, and watch the Phinney Ridge sidewalk activity. On this visit, there was some sweet art on sale, dubbed "Minimum Wage" - the artist was asking for $13.00 per piece for some small, lovely photographs on wood. Would I go back? Ice cream and beer, YES. I truly appreciate how Bluebird's ice cream doesn't compromise flavor for sweetness. If you order a scoop of marionberry, you really taste the marionberry and not some sugar-packed artificially-flavored alternative. They have rotating flavors every few days so don't always expect the same things on the menu...which makes for a more fun experience I think. The ice cream bartenders have always been great. Super friendly with jokes to spare. The space isn't too big so sometimes there's a line out the door, but that's just a testament to Bluebird's goodness. Their location in Fremont is just as great, minus the beer on tap (which is only available at Phinney Ridge).
