I posted a request on yelp and several companies reached out to me about my small bathroom project. Keep in mind I put all the specifics about it in my request. Very small 19 sqft bathroom that has already been demoed and painted, just needed some flooring, a vanity , toilet and a mirror installed. After they reached out saying they could help, I got a phone call from them and spoke about my project. They asked what my budget was and I said I'm not sure, but it's pretty low as it's a small bathroom. The woman told me their remodels start at 20K! It just irritated me that they knew how minimal my protect was and still reached out to me. It was a waste of time. Who's spending 20K on a guest half bath? I guess if you're getting a bidet, heated flooring and gold toilet. I ended up spending 5K for two bathrooms and my kitchen flooring. THE PROJECT: My husband and I bought our first house in March 2021. From the inspection report, we knew it needed work (plumbing, electrical, foundation repair). We also wanted to renovate a bathroom, and then convert our garage into an ADU. In April 2021 I met with several contractors and chose Onn and Blues Brothers Construction (BBC) because of their reviews, and also because Onn was the one GC who went through the inspection report with us and talked through the problems that needed fixing. He seemed detail oriented and thorough, confident about being able to do all the work we were asking, and was reassuring and calm which were qualities I knew would be essential throughout this project. COMMUNICATION-- Once we signed a contract, (July 1, 2021) Onn disappeared and all communication was through Renee, the office manager. I was rarely able to talk to anyone who actually knew the work itself, just passing messages through Renee. It often took days or a week or more to hear back about a question or issue, sometimes having to ask the same thing over and over before it would even be acknowledged (several times I couldn't get an answer bc no one involved knew the answer about work their team did). I rarely heard from Onn, maybe 4-5 times over the 6 months that work was ongoing. BuilderTrend website was a big draw on signing, but was only really updated for invoices. Calendar was either blank, wrong, or updated after-the-fact. I'm glad I took lots of my own progress pics bc I never saw any from BBC. THE FOUNDATION- One of the key issues was a crack in the foundation. Onn was initially confident about taking this on. He charged me $10k to draw blueprints of the foundation to figure out the best way to tackle it. His team took measurements in July. It took 3 months to give me an estimate that was 10x what a competitor quoted. Finally, Onn told me he actually didn't really want to do the foundation and recommended I go to someone else for it. I felt frustrated and misled, and wish he had just been upfront about not wanting to do it in the beginning. ADU-- We hired BBC to draw up blueprints for the ADU conversion. We finalized a layout in August, were told it'd be 5-6wks to have the full plans. Mid-December the plans were still not done, I couldn't get an answer on their progress, and I was realizing I didn't want to do the ADU with BBC. I finally told them to just forget the plans and asked for a refund, Onn agreed verbally over the phone (though would later try to back out of that). Side note: In October I asked for a general ballpark estimate for vaulting part of the ceiling in the ADU. It took a full month for them to come back with an estimate of $50,000-$100,000 to vault the ceiling in a less-than 400sq ft space (others I've talked to since then said that shouldn't cost more than $20k). ROOF & MOLD- In September BBC replaced the plumbing throughout the house, then closed up the walls. In November I noticed mold and water droplets on the floor, under a baseboard near where plumbing work had been done. Onn was unresponsive. I talked with Cris about the issue, he insisted the plumbing was not the cause, his answer was "maybe someone spilled a drink inside the walls before closing them up." Thankfully I had taken a lot of pictures along the way and realized the problem was two vent pipes in the roof that BBC left unflashed, and water poured in during a recent rain causing a lot of mold to grow inside the walls. Four times in the next 4 wks BBC assured me they had fully taken care of the mold, only for me to find more mold and more work needed. They didn't follow standard practices for mold remediation, never got a dehumidifier to dry out the space, or even enclose it to prevent mold from spreading. At one point a moldy piece of drywall was left sitting on my kitchen counter over the weekend. I finally hired my own mold remediation specialist, he took care of it in 5 days. I never got a satisfying apology from BBC, only "mistakes happen that's part of doing construction work." MISC- Since moving in we've found many other things that were not done properly, sloppy finish work. Touch-ups are one thing, but for example the EV charger they installed wasn't even hooked up to the electrical panel; no caulk around bathtub; outlets askew from the wall; etc. CONCLUSION-- The work was finally completed in early January 2022. Final paperwork wasn't signed till April bc Onn kept agreeing to things then going back on them, and tried to get us to 1. Give up our warranty and 2. Sign a non-disparagement clause (to not allow a bad review). BBC agreed to work outside their usual scope with our project, assuring me they were qualified, but then made many mistakes that caused delays. Needless to say, we are using a different contractor for the ADU conversion. read more

I contacted Blues Bro back in late 2020 and then we went over some things. In the mean time I contacted other agencies as well trying to see where I get the most value for my money, it was here. I locked in the contract, to the person getting work done please go back and forth and negotiate. I hired them so that I would not have to deal with contractors for my adu.. I was happy on my results and how my project turned out to be. I gave my own rough blueprints to Blues Bros which helped a lot. Project mgn was Sussan and cordinators changed but Renne was very, very helpful. Payments were done in installs of each step the project goes through.. they have an app it tells you when the payment will be done. I bought most of my own stuff, even though they have inventory inhouse. I would recommend to future client, negotiate, read the contract and be upfront with budget and leave a little buffer. Have communication with both contractors and Blues Bros. Be on top of things right away from the first second. Get the number of the contractors and there boss and ask for weekly of daily status of work. If something is off have chat with both Blues and Contractors right away. Our remodel was completed a year ago. It seemed only fair for me to post the review based on using this kitchen and seeing how the workmanship faired. In addition, I was waiting to see if Blues Brothers would help with any issues that arose later on and held up their end of the workmanship warranty. I interviewed 4 companies and ultimately decided on Blues Brothers because I connected with the project manager and was very excited to be working with another female. The other 3 companies I interviewed, came to the appointment starting off with "will your husband be joining us?" At this point, if you are a real contractor you must be a complete moron to think that the husbands are the ones calling all the design shots. This shows a lack of experience and an elevated ego. So no thank you to misogynistic attitudes. With Blues Brothers, I hit it off with the assigned project manager and she was wonderful at the meeting. She really listened to what I had in mind and was very reassuring. All this came to a screeching halt when I signed the contract. Once my contract was signed, I was immediately ghosted. Not a word. When I was finally contacted, Renee the office manager took over my project. The company only told me that the PM had a family emergency and would not be on my project going forward. Fine, I'm not cold-hearted and I would have completely understood if she had told me or given me a heads up but weeks went by without a word on her whereabouts. As much as Renee was good at being the messenger between me and the subcontractors, she did not see my kitchen at all. How do you manage a kitchen remodel without ever seeing the home? All these other project managers that I read about on Yelp and even the owner of the company were completely nonexistent in my project. You would think that the owner himself would reach out to me especially when his own project manager abandoned the project right off the bat. Not at all. Not a peep. My project was very straightforward and I had purchased all the materials and finishes ahead of time since this was not my first remodel. (My previous contractor for my other two home remodels moved out of the country so I had to see a new one.) I was completely in shock at what was unfolding. This was not a way to start off a kitchen remodel. I wanted a project manager for this project because I wanted a professional. I assumed BB could handle it because they have project managers but of course, I did not end up having one. I should have received a discount because I paid for a PM and did not receive one! The remodel was then contracted out to subcontractors who seemed to understand remodeling about 50% of the time. My backsplash tile work seemed okay but the grout was left on the tile without cleanup. The nail holes were not patched up and the cabinet doors were not attached properly leaving a wide gap in between the doors. The doors were not adjusted properly and to this day, it still looks off. Another company came to work on another cabinet project for us last week and it looks like I will have to hire them to fix these doors I have only had for a year. BB will tell you to go to their cabinet partner next door but I will say, you will need to proceed with caution. The subcontractor that BB hired to install my countertops did not do as nice of a job as I would have liked. The countertop seams are noticeable and did not look professionally done. The edges on the countertops don't look smooth either like they haven't been sanded or smoothed out. The whole point of having a project manager was so I did not have to look into every single issue since that's not my job. Each issue that rose took weeks to resolve. In the end, I never thought I would be among the contractor fail stories. I guess you never know what you really get. Even the contract with the warranties and workmanship guarantees is really meaningless. It only causes more time and stress to reach out, hoping they can help with a solution, which by the way I have not received a response to. My emails have bounced back saying the email address is now undeliverable. I also shared my sentiment with their post-project review as well as their team who came in to take photos. In the end, what's done is done. I am grateful to be able to even go through a kitchen remodel and if I can help another homeowner in their remodel journey then at least there's some salvation. read more

They never completed their project. Despite calling multiple times. They were subbing for another contractor who wasnt paying their subs despite taking $600,000 from me. I offered to pay directly since i was aware of my contractor's poor business practices. Never called back. I guess what i encountered was two bad contractors. The installation of the microwave is what took the longest, but that's not on them because we needed it installed by the microwave company people for the warranty. It's hard to believe it could get worse. But the electrical Blues Bros installed now has one light out. I changed the fixture and it's not the fixture-it's in the wiring. The 'electrician' they used wasn't the licensed electrician of record. He obviously wasn't an electrician at all. I actually feel a bit uncomfortable writing this review at all, since coming up with this rating has been extremely difficult. TL;DR: 4-5 stars for the construction team specifically. High quality work, friendly team, easy to work with, even taught me a lot. 1-3 stars for the project management. Since this was provided by one of the contractors associated with Blues Brothers, at their request I did not base the total rating on that, but I will explain below. I recently completed a kitchen remodel project that's been in the works since February. I had interviewed a bunch of companies via Yelp, Homeadvisor, Buildzoom, and Houzz, as it was really difficult to find one that would 1) be willing to work in a high-rise condo building, and 2) be able to help with creatively maximizing storage space in a small 8x8 kitchen with really annoyingly placed soffits. Another must-have on my list was access to affordable bamboo cabinets, which many did not, but it wasn't a huge dealbreaker either since Sincere Home Decor had exactly what I wanted as well. I narrowed down to 3 really awesome companies and it was a tough decision. This is probably the most expensive project and the most money I've ever spent in my life, so I wanted to be careful. I selected Blues Brothers because they seemed to be detail oriented (actually had line items on the contract) and creative. They provided a realistic and beautiful 3D rendering of what my kitchen could look like. I signed the contract in March and notified my HOA. Then COVID hit. Like many Americans, I lost my job at this time, but fortunately I had the entire budget for the project already set aside. Even though I had the funds, we weren't able to start the project until August, and the project took 2 months. They had quoted me 30-45 days, but I never complained about the delays since I chalked it up to the pandemic. It certainly was tedious to live in a 760 sq ft apartment without a kitchen for 2 months, boxes piled up everywhere, washing dishes in the bathtub... It's important to note that the project could have actually been completed in less time if the contractors actually worked every day. There were many days and sometimes multiple days in a row where no work was being done. I learned from other friends who have done remodels that this is fairly uncommon, but again, I never complained because it wasn't a big deal to me. I was very patient and understanding that all the workers have multiple simultaneous projects going on. I am not docking any stars for this, but figured I should mention it so you know what to expect. Communication was a bit sparse, and I was told that it was so they wouldn't "bother" me. When I asked questions, it would often take days to respond and certain questions were ignored. This may be ok for other people, but as a first time remodeler spending a significant portion of my savings, I actually wanted to be involved and know what was going on, and know when people would be coming/going. For example, nobody told me when my first inspection would be. My building manager called me one day and said "the inspector is here" and I was like, "the who?!". Nobody was working on my project that day, but fortunately I quickly found out inspections are quick and easy. One time I was told to buy and have grout ready within a couple days. Again, I'm a newb, so I googled "grout" and was overwhelmed. Asking of course yielded no responses, so I turned to friends again and got a nice lesson about grout colors and types and was able to get it in time. They also didn't communicate well with me on when to schedule appliance deliveries or the sizes of Rev-A-Shelf things I would need to purchase to be installed in the cabinets, so I ended up buying a lot of things that need to be returned, which is a huge hassle. There were some other issues and I could go into more detail, but this is already too long. Some damages were also incurred but they were fixed without much hassle. On the bright side, for you reading this, I think all of the issues of the previous paragraph could have been avoided if Onn had been my project manager instead. I didn't interact with him a whole lot during my project, but when I did, he was always genuine, responsive, and a good listener. Many compromises had to be made, but all in all, I do love my new kitchen and it was worth all the research, effort, and money I put into it. The actual construction team - Joe, Jose, Joey, Manuel, Alberto, and the countertop installers, were great and friendly. It was fun to spend time with them and all of them taught me at least one new skill. Check out the photos! read more

We redid the downstairs garage and living room to make a full 3rd bedroom and connected indoor/outdoor living space which has made our three generation family that much more comfortable. Overall we felt very well cared for and loved the results! In search of someone that can help update our house, I was very picky in who I wanted to let into our home. We will definitely use Blues Brothers Construction again for future projects. 1) Reached out to 10 different companies, 7 responded, and 5 came out to give quotes. Looking to update our kitchen to something much more bright and pleasant. Onn was first and hands down gave the most competitive estimate. One company quoted almost twice as much and was nickel and diming for every detail. 2) The team accommodated every request we had and handled hurdles effectively and immediately. They worked hard to make our timelines and fit our schedules. We didn't have to worry about anything. These guys know their stuff and helped provide suggestions when necessary. 3) The construction area was kept clean and tidy. Each person we interacted with was polite and respectful. We were barely home during this project since my husband and I both work long hours. It was largely unsupervised. We felt 100% confident in the integrity of Onn and his team. After speaking with a few different companies, I found Blues Brothers to be the best value, especially since they are also material dealers and designers, this helped me save a lot of time with the project. The process went very well and the job was executed in a timely manner- I renovated the kitchen, bathrooms, floors, new paint job, and a few other updates. Didn't enjoy our experience doing kitchen remodel. We thought we were hiring Blues Brothers to do the work, but they subcontracted the entire job to other contractors. Agreed upon details were constantly forgotten, and required double verification. Any unexpected work opened up a new discussion, a new chance for BB to charge us more (even though we paid a large sum up front). It took multiple attempts to have the work verified by the city. We had to constantly check in on the subcontractors ourselves to make sure the work was on schedule. In the end the kitchen came out pretty nice, but no fond memories of the experience. read more

So we had our bathroom remodeled and the team rather destroyed our bathroom. Comes to show you need to be home, trust Noone. So from the advertise and on-site est. And how it was walked through looked professional and bathrooms look great. I enter my info and recieved a call back. For a full bathroom remodeled 20k and up, this person was either not in her right mind or the site and her differ in price. I told her marker price for a bathroom is not 20 k bath fitters go for 4 to 6 k and 3 other construction have given 4 to 8 k she told me maybe that's why I needed to redo the remodel! Well I guess when I'm wrong I don't need the condescending company to do down grade work as I need my bathroom done. My lesson from the first lesson was not to be bullied by someone I hired else I'll end up right here. The site gives them a 2 star the consultant phone person can kick rocks! read more

I used Blues Brothers to remodel a bathroom in my house. We love how the final product turned out! See the photo. The team (managed by Onn and Jenny) was professional and kept the area clean and safe during the job, which was essential since we have little ones roaming around. At the end of the job they made sure everything was to our satisfaction. All the folks they sent on a daily basis were very nice and extremely hard working. The company is organized with written contracts (do read them) and the city permitting process. They even brought a portable toilet. I would use them again for another job. read more

He was very friendly to work with as were his very talented crew. He got me started on a portal that allowed a constant and reliable way to communicate with everyone on the project team; my questions and concerns along the way were always addressed quickly; and last minute changes I'd ask for when I'd think of something new were done beyond expectation.
