Two extremely important points to make -- as a nonnative to the area -- before I address the 'cue itself: 1) If you're seeking traditional mustard-based South Carolina sauce here, you're out of luck: a sign behind the counter states quite unequivocably the owner's view that "mustard = heresy." While, as a Texan, I am in agreement, my friends who visited Bluffton BBQ hoping to at least try the regional variant were disappointed. 2) The owner of this place is a full-on member of the Tea Party brigade, and proudly displays all manner of political propaganda as a result of his apparent intent to proselytize the cause. That's the sole reason I'm giving this place two stars. Frankly, I don't give a hoot which party or politician you support, but it is unspeakably rude for any restaurant owner to thrust his personal politics upon unsuspecting diners, regardless of how strongly you might support Jim DeMint or whomever. In Texas that is literally unheard of, and it's just about as red a state as South Carolina is (though we admittedly lack the ignominy of having a U.S. House delegate who once accused the president of the United States of "lying" in the middle of a State of the Union address). I thought Southern folks were more polite than Texans (and we needn't rehash here the debate over whether Texas is "Southern" given its heritage as a former Confederate state, but suffice it to say no Texan I know considers it as such), but now I'm not so sure. Anyway ... if the owner's personal politics weren't on full display at Bluffton BBQ, I'd happily give the place four stars and possibly even five. Their ribs and pulled pork are superb, and the sauce (while much more Kansas City-style than Texan) is equally great. I can't speak highly of the pristine premises, but keep in mind that in Texas most "real" barbecue joints date back to the early 20th-century and have the smells and decor to accompany such heritage; thus, Bluffton BBQ seemed awfully "new" to me (which I assume it is - the building looks to have been built within the past few years). Again, great 'cue -- but be forewarned that you'll basically have to deal with an extreme right-winger to get at it. read more

HOLY MOLY! I'm ashamed I didn't write a glowing review as soon as I left. My mother is moving to Hilton Head Island soon - and I will force her to take me back whenever I visit. The BBQ was simply delicious. Super chill place - with 'donations accepted" self serve beer, fabulous platters of meats and sides, bottled root bear, and lots of PIGS everywhere! Not what I was expecting. Food didn't match up to price. Just one kind of sauce that was close to A-1 steak sauce in appearance and taste and ketchup on the table. Pork and a fork was Ok. Seemed to be mushy and watery. This place seems to be one of those BBQ hole in the walls trying too hard to appear in a Garden & Gun Magazine. Tables are cramped, drinks are terrible. Really unique BBQ spot in the heart of Bluffton. Whole Chicken was awesome but get there early because they sell out quick. Ribs and Mac and Cheese were also great. Only complaint was the limited amount of booze. read more

The star of our pick-up was the Brunswick Stew. The actual que was good, but the sides kind missed the mark. Olives in the coleslaw? Not my thing. I didn't think there was a coleslaw I wouldn't eat, but this was one of them. Having the good fortune to have Bluffton BBQ in my town has turned me into a BBQ snob. While everything is wonderful, I always get the pulled pork sandwich or the pork and a fork plate because the pork is *delicious*! The brunswick stew and collard greens are also favorites of mine....or the hand-cut fries, which are outstanding. I love the quirky decor and laid back atmosphere. read more

Really great BBQ - it took us a while to try this place because I have a small child and they did not have highchairs for the longest time and all the chairs were stools. I think they finaly got 1 highchair (but it looked pretty gross) and they set up an outside area with actual chairs. Anyway, we chose to eat outside and he just sat in one of the chairs with a back. The food was great we ordered the ribs, pulled pork, - mac&cheese, sweet potato as our sides. All was great even the sides! We will be back :) read more

We happened upon Bluffton BBQ on our way back from Daufuskie Island. We arrived early and had no problem getting food or a table. It was getting packed when we left. Loved all the decor. The four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We had the quarter chicken, pulled pork sandwiches & a half slab of ribs. For sides we had Mac & cheese, Brunswick stew & sweet potato casserole. All were very good. Portions were plenty. Ted came to our table to see how we liked everything. He was super nice to our kids. We even bought sauce to take home. We are a BBQ family and spend an embarrassing amount of time poking around the southeast for ribs and pulled pork. I'm not really sure why. I always end up at Ted's. Almost every Friday, and it never changes. The dryrub is a secret and you won't find salad. Drinks are paid for by donations and when it runs out you are out of luck. Call early, don't complain, smile and sit down, and you will be rewarded with the best BBQ in the low country! read more

This is really the best place in the area for ribs and pulled pork. Prices are reasonable and the owners are friendly and helpful, they actually are there to serve you. You order at the counter and they then bring it to your table. Seating can be a problem, since they only have stools to sit upon. But, they do have outside seating. This place is great for lunch. We have been to this restaurant several times now and each time we leave full and pleased. I cannot even begin to explain the amazingness that is Bluffton BBQ's ribs. Great food! Ribs and pork on a fork is to DIE for. Love the Brunswick stew. Atmosphere is always great and the music on the back patio is very delightful on a Friday or Sat evening (peak season only). FYI - call ahead of time to make sure they will be open and ask them what they have ran out of. I think very highly of most of the staff that I have met there but there was one younger chick that works there was kinda rude and ignored us except to bring us our food. I think we came in past whatever time she thought she was going to get to leave. Her attitude stunk and she didn't try to hide her distaste. Not typical of the usual staff that I have met there. This is the place everybody says you must go to. Well I went, and didn't think much about it. Dont get me wrong, the ribs were good, but that's about all I can say, unless you count the fries my son said were awesome! We were ther in a Thursday night, and we were the only ones there at 7:00 pm . I ordered the big sampler plate, ribs, pulled pork, and 1/2 a chicken with 2 sides, my sides were Mac and cheese and Brunswick stew. Both sides were really bad! The Mac and cheese was really mushy, even my youngest said it was bad! But the Brunswick stew was even worse! It was very tomato laden, and totally flavorless. The girl at the counter asked if it was to spicy? And I said "this is the blandest thing I've ever eaten and that a little salt was in order" she got a little huffy and walked away. She came back a bit later, and asked if I really knew what I was talking about? I told her that I was a professional chef trained at the CIA & in France. I think I know what I'm talking about, she again just walked to the back of the restaurant. There was nothing but constructive criticism, but she didn't want to hear that. I then asked one last question, and this was it... Why is your BBQ served room temp? Bordering on cold? She said that they only serve hot food, but my friends pulled pork sandwich and fries were cold, my plate was warm at best, and that I can't excuse! Especially for over $40. I normally give a place 2 chances, but service was a bit on the sarcastic side and the food mediocre at best. There are many BBQ joints in this area for me to eat, so consider the alternatives when thinking about a BBQ joint. read more

I have to give Bluffton BBQ 5 Stars because they deserve it! And I know BBQ because I live in Richmond VA - Home of Buz and Ned's BBQ that beat Bobby Flay in a BBQ Slap Down. The bbq, chicken and ribs were juicy and yummy. Chicken had a spicy rub on the skin that was delicious. The sides we ordered, potato casserole and greens were perfection - no vinegar needed on the greens and no salt or pepper needed on anything. We opted to try a new place other than our usual foray to Jim n Nicks when down here. The ambience was cool and looked to be a fine local rib place. The ribs did fall off the bone as others have noted but...my husband who makes searching out great ribs his mission...said to be like that they were steamed or baked and never saw a smoker and they were covered with sauce albeit delish sauce. Bbq was delicious. There an outdoor seating area and an indoor area. Definitely choose to sit indoors because they had a bit of a fly issue outside. But inside they had some amazing pulled pork. Great size portions so come hungry. Sweet tea was good and the staff was military friendly. Best bbq in blufton I've tried so far. Small place. But huge on flavor. The pig was perfectly cooked NOT DRY!!! Many bbq joints screw that up. read more
