Blunch is a great place for a quick, hearty pick up breakfast or lunch. The layout is a bit odd, so it's hard to tell who's in line, and the seating is very limited. If you plan to sit you should expect quite a lot of jostling. The food was good, but nothing particularly incredible. The loss of one star was really based on the eggs. The egg part of our breakfast sandwiches was one of those premade egg squares and it wasn't a great consistency. It was also weirdly juicy. I would go back if I was in the area and needed a quick bite, but wouldn't go out of my way to stop here again. read more

The place is super tiny so there's a lot of shuffling around between being in line to order and waiting for your food. We ordered an iced latte, hot coffee, bacon egg and cheese and a yogurt parfait. I would pass on the coffees next time, they tasted burnt and lacked flavor. The bacon egg and cheese was delicious, a great balance of egg, bacon, cheese and bagel. The yogurt parfait was very good! Definitely much more granola than yogurt but the granola was delicious, seemed homemade. I would like to try one of their sandwich presses next time! Herbed, flavorful and fluffy, the ova brick you'll find wedged between two halves of a tender grain-forward hard roll is more than substantial. For another buck and change, you can bring the meat (sliced ham, bacon or sausage) and you should definitely make it spicy - the house made spread is mayo based and pleasantly piquant in its heat. The breakfast menu is fairly limited, with Egg and Bagelwiches dominating the morning board. You'll find a few pastries - scones, muffins, croissants and the like - along with a cooler of juices and a selection of hot dranks. The lunch stuff had me drooling/bookmarking a return visit for the midday. Expect to grab and go, though, as the counter stools fill quickly. The kicker? Fun little supporting efforts for local non-profits. Stuff a buck in to the water donation bucket for animal welfare, or a bring a pair of socks for the homeless. Add goat cheese, shop roasted tomatoes and baby greens? So nice, I'd hit it twice. Or, if you're feeling a cold sandwich, the lox and tomato-onion chop sitting atop a toasty onion bagel is always a good plan. For a sweet treat that I'd daresay is really a mini-meal, go for the "bread pudding." It shorted me a whole two bucks and was secretly four knock-out pieces of french toast topped with berry drizzle, cream and chocolate in the center. An almost upsettingly sexy experience. The granola parfait was the only thing I thought could use some reworking, and even that wasn't bad. There wasn't enough plain yogurt; there was a ton of sugary jam on top. It was too much sweetness when combined Nature Valley bar-esque granola. Maybe it would work better if it was more uniform, but the cup it was in made it pretty difficult to stir. Blunch is a pleasantly cozy café-type venue located in the South End, just across from Boston Medical Center. There are maybe a dozen or so stools along a counter, so seating is limited. It is certainly more of a grab 'n go joint. Service is great. Andres runs the register and helps with food preparation. Having been there only a handful of times, I was surprised that he had already learned my name. Menu options include bagelwiches, sandwiches, and pastries - brownies and churros and crumb cake, oh my! I find that the bagelwiches are the way to go, being more filling and flavorful. They get their bagels locally from Zeppy's, and as a native New Yorker, I approve. All of their menu items can be customized. Want bacon on that otherwise healthy sandwich? Ka-pow! There ya go. Ain't nobody got time for tomatoes? Boom! More room for bacon! My personal favorite is the onion bagel with sausage, mozzarella cheese, hot Italian cherry peppers and red peppers - with or without bacon. Their crumb cake is also quite delicioso. To think this was once our casual corner sandwich shop. Nikki and her team have done a marvelous job since the day they opened on the corner of E Springfield and Harrison. This can be a bit of a tough location but they've managed to thrive and continue to serve delicious sandwiches and sweet treats in the south end. The space is tiny but if you're in the area def give one of their sandwiches a try. My personal favorite sandwich is the Giving Tree- turkey topped with fresh crisp slices of apples- perfection. My husband would always get a breakfast sandwich with their chipotle aioli and still raves about it 5 yrs later! On my latest visit I only had time for a quick treat so of course I indulged in their better-than-crack chocolate chip cookies and a blondie for the road. Limiting my choices to 2 was extremely difficult considering they had an abundance of their incredible coffee cakes and it may be a while before I come back. I must say I was disappointed in many aspects by this establishment. From the outside, it appeared to be a cute little café on the corner of a street. The handle to open the door was a spoon. Pretty cool! This place caught my attention immediately. So I was excited from the start. Inside was just as charming. Window seating with bar stools lined the perimeter of this café. The tables oversaw the beautiful apartments this place cornered. Plus, it was nice and bright inside from the sunshine that illuminated in. Outside seating was an option as well. But here's where the dissatisfaction set it: $2.50 for a small iced coffee. But it really looked like an extra small. Although the coffee was good, what a rip-off for the size. The Onion Bagel Sandwich with Hot Cherry Tomatoes was not the best. Too spicy for my palate and wayyy too much vinegar on the red peppers! Ouff!! It was a greasy mess, too. $5.99 for an unsatisfactory meal. The service wasn't good either. Our cashier was not genuine and didn't care about the customers she was serving. Made my way to Blunch for a late lunch (~ 2pm) one afternoon after a short bus ride from Kendall Square with Erick H. I ordered the Big Papi (black forrest ham, Swiss cheese, chipotle cilantro aioli & pickle) which surprisingly didn't have any steroids in it. The bread was nicely toasted, seemed very fresh and had a real crispness to it; it was delicious! The prices were good and the location was also pretty neat although fairly small. The name didn't sound too appealing but after reading so many good things about it, I figured that I'd try it and it was much neater than I thought it would be, exceeding my expectations my a mile. Their baked good looked delicious as well so I might have to return for another meal at some point soon. The only downside is that parking around there is tricky but the orange line runs fairly close to it and so do the buses. I recommend this to anyone in the area who is looking for a solid, light meal! Or for a snack as well. Being off Mass Ave, on a much quieter street, you can even pop there for a coffee and pastry to do some work or people watch using some of theirr window-facing stools. read more

Rather than including flavorful ingredients, the provencal relies on three types of fats to satisfy: cheese, nuts and olives. Perhaps they have forgotten that Provence is known for its fabulous produce, and maybe the 'provencal' sandwich could include a fresh vegetable or two. If I wanted to have an all-fat lunch, I'd stick with the hospital cafeteria. I am so done with this place. read more

I'd been meaning to go to Blunch for ages. I finally went for brunch/lunch (how fitting) with a friend a couple of weeks ago. I decided on the Provencal pressed sandwich, which is fresh Vermont goat cheese, oven roasted tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, kalamatta olive puree, artichoke hearts, basil cashew pesto, greens on a crusty baguette ($7.75). My friend got an eggwich with fresh tomato and goat cheese, and we got one of their giant chocolate chip cookies to split. It's quite busy here at lunchtime, since it's right in the heart of the South End medical center area. We manage to grab a seat though, and eat our cookie while we wait for our sandwiches. And let me tell you, there's a reason their cookie is known for being famous. It's everything you want in a cookie; soft, chewy, full of chocolate... It takes awhile for our sandwiches to be ready (they call you to the counter), but when they were, I was amazed at how big they were. I could've easily eaten half and saved the other half for later. I didn't though. I had half of my friend's eggwich; it was a really good breakfast sandwich. I'd say it's better than Flour's eggwich, mostly because its customizable and the frittata/egg part seems to be fresher. I was also really pleased with my sandwich; it was vegetarian but really filling nonetheless. The flavors went together well. If you're a fan of bagels and lox, then absolutely get the wheat bagelwich with smoked salmon, tomato-caper-red onion-cucumber salad and boursin cheese. It's served open-face style, which I don't particularly care for, and has tiny diced red onions, which I also don't usually care for. Neither of these things impacted my enjoyment of this bagelwich. The flavors are extremely complex but balanced very well and piled high with toppings. And at only $7? Totally worth it in my opinion. Definitely not a place to bring parties exceeding three or four unless you take out. Quite the variety on the menu, including a daily Soup and Sandwich whim. When we asked the manager for a recommendation, she replied "That's like asking me to choose between my own children!". (Personally, I don't see how that's a problem because my parents would totally choose me, hands down. ) My sister and I ended up choosing The Piglet because we are huge fans of bacon. The maple aioli really made the sandwich. Mm. We also bought the chocolate chip cookies that previous Yelp reviews have been raving over. Not over-hyped, that was a crack cookie, yes indeed. Crunchy on the outside, soft, gooey, and chewy in the center, even after we had left it sitting for an hour as we devoured our sandwiches. It was pure luck that I stayed at a place near here. I was looking around for quick and simple (but also yummy) breakfast spots nearby and found Blunch. I decided to visit because the name is funny. I've been wanting to visit since their show aired on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Blunch definitely did not disappoint! I split the Loaf and the Bird; both we hearty and delicious. The bread was fresh made and the ingredients made for a perfect sandwich combination. The Loaf had enough meat to feed a small sandwich and the slow roasted tomatoes...I have no words! It's a quaint little place that doesn't have a ton of seating, but hey it's a small business, small shop, but packs big flavor! The owner was there as well and is super friendly. Blunch is one of the great South End staples. I've been here many times, but this time around I tried the Eggwich on a Hard roll with cheddar and tomatoes. It hit the spot! The eggs were fluffy and full of flavor and they were very generous with the portions. I've also had the bagel with their house-made boursin cheese which is also great. At lunch, this spot gets quite crowded, so if you are planning to come, make sure to leave yourself enough time to wait about 15 mins for your sandwich. But they are worth it!! Yumyumyum. I saw the yelp stars and was skeptic but I stand corrected. This place makes bomb breakfast sandwiches. I could come here 4-5 times a week. It's that yummy. I recommend going with one of their signature bagel dishes or trying the BLT spicy. It looks yummy. I got the smoked salmon on plain bagel myself and it was DELICIOUS don't get me wrong but I think my mouth smells of leftover cheese, dill, and fish. Haha. Not a good combo if you're going to a meeting right after. Anyway, environment wise this breakfast joint is really small and diner like but without so much seating. It's nice for a quick breakfast stop. Try it if you're craving a bagelwich!!! read more
