Such an adorable place. We came more for the live music and good cocktails we had heard about but ended up being hungry and ordering food as well. The food was just okay. We ordered the papaya salad, ital vital (probably my favorite of the bunch), and the shaken filet. The filet was wayyyyy overcooked, shockingly so. I was a bit surprised that they ended up serving it but we ended up not eating it anyway. It was a complete waste. We ended up still hungry so we ordered the belgian fries which got us full almost immediately. Bang for your buck at its finest. I tried the boathouse sour and the first class. They were both really well crafted.The live music came later in the night and was quite the entertainment. Such a cool find in Orange County. In the land of people who can be tools this place sets a kickback vibe with top notch drinks and a mixologist to match and some killer craft Americana food. Really cool space, delicious (but not quite great food), terrific service, and fun programming (e.g., open mic night on Tuesdays). Came here for a mid-week dinner, 2 people. There was no crowd so we were quickly seated. Our server (and everyone else we interacted with) was incredibly friendly and contributed to the awesome vibe of Boathouse Collective. We ordered a lot of different stuff on the menu - burger, chicken katsu, hamachi, yakimo, shishitos. The food was excellent except for the french fries - extremely salted and near burned. Came here on a Friday night around 6:30 pm. This restaurant looked ambiguous on the outside, but was very cute on the side! The ambiance had a slight hipster vibe but was pretty cool and chill. I had a party of 3 and we sat at a large community table. I didn't mind the seating at all, but I did think the music was too loud and we couldn't hear each other talk. Our server Jennifer was super fun and friendly! The servers came off as more of our friends rather than people working, which I enjoyed. Now for the food. I found the food to be good, but not amazing. The food was slightly overpriced to me, but maybe we just ordered the wrong things. I got the burger ($15) which was cooked well, but didn't amaze me. The fries has a good flavor but were kinda soggy and the aioli was tasty. My boyfriend got the special which was a ribeye steak ($40). It was a hefty piece of meat served with what tasted like a horseradish cream. The meat was cooked well, but was unfortunately over seasoned and pretty salty. Still enjoyable though! But for $40, I'm not sure if I would get it again. For drinks, we got a margarita and a basil greyhound. Both were tasty but also STRONG! After a drink and a half, I was on a good level. The food here is so good!! Food/Drinks: Try the Band Bowl or the Deluxe Bowl!! My friend and I ordered both and shared. The medallions and salmon were cooked perfectly and they come with crispy rice (which I thought was unique). The poke tasted fresh and the katsu was also really great. They come with some rice topped with a special sweet & salty sauce. Our server had some fruity mocktails made for us since we're under 21 and we really enjoyed them. Dessert: Their Butterscotch Panna Cotta is my new favorite dessert. If I weren't so full already, I would've ordered a second one. I'll definitely be back for some more. This place is so cool I will be making a tradition of visiting this place anytime I'm in the area! I loved it! Lots of ambiance, just fun! Music, entertaining bar area, lots of seating, great for kids earlier in the evening it's loud enough they're not going to disturb anyone, and to top it all off the drinks and food where SO GOOD! So much potential....inconsistency was comical. Six of us went to Boathouse on Saturday evening. We sat down and waited a little bit until the server came over. We ordered a round of drinks with two people in the group ordering the basil greyhound. Drinks were served and the basil greyhounds looked completely different; one was yellowish with basil in it, the other was ruby red and no basil in it. The server says, don't worry, they'll taste the same...they were just made by different bartenders. Well, they tasted completely different. We were about to order and the server asked if the host had given us the specials menu. Answer, was no. He brings us the specials menu with some interesting, but diverse options; Cuban sandwich, uni pasta, etc. Meanwhile, we order another round of cocktails, with three of us ordering the First Class (Templeton Rye I China China I Vanille De Madagascar I Lemon $14), as that was a favorite from the first round. It was served differently than the first one. First one, no ice, great flavor, well balanced. Second one, ice, watered down. Server says sometimes it is served on the rocks, sometimes not. Strange. We ordered our entrees and I went with the server's recommendation of the Cuban sandwich. Wife went with the filet tips, rice, and arugula. We also ordered the uni pasta for the middle of the table, to share. While waiting, we order another round of First Class cocktails, asking the server to have the bartender who made the first one make it. Score! The drinks were delivered and they were awesome. The ladies were tired of the inconsistency, so they opted for a bottle of Pinot Noir. Options were $30, $70, $80. Strange price breaks/options and they went with the $30 bottle. The food was served, except for the Cuban sandwich. Server says that the Cuban sandwich was taking longer than normal. 2-minutes later, it comes out; cold hunk of pork belly, cold cheese, avocado and cold, dry bread. It was horrible. I would of rather the server said they forgot it, waited another ten-minutes and had it done right. Wife's filet tips plate was cooked super rare...meat was super chewy. Uni pasta was good. Others at the table weren't impressed with their food. Oh well. We ordered another round of First Class and another bottle of Pinot Noir....surprise, we received a different tasting cocktail than the previous ones. Driving around one Saturday evening, we stumbled upon the Boathouse Collective. I've never visited any place like it before. There is a hipster vibe to it and the decor makes it original. There is valet parking but you can also opt to park on the street. It's an unsuspecting restaurant in the middle of a residential area. Our server was very free spirited and friendly and we were attended to promptly. We ordered a couple of cocktails and sandwiches.Not bad at all. If you are looking for healthy menu options I noted none. I'm pretty sure my arteries were clogged after eating my sandwich but it was so worth it. There was a live band and the layout of the restaurant is quite unusual. Everyone had a great view of the stage. In all it's a different experience and I will recommend to try at least once. Very cool place to come for a date or hang out spot. I think the restaurant was built in a hanger or something, but the decor and ambience is pretty unique with surfboards on the ceiling. I wouldn't say its a romantic setting, but it's definitely fun. You can either valet for $5 or easily find free street parking. There's a live band area and sitting near it can get pretty loud and hard to hear your table conversations, but nonetheless the band is a great aspect of Boathouse. One thing to improve would be to maybe add some sort of purse hooks to the tables. For small parties, the little tables and stool chairs leave no place for the ladies to put their purses. As for the food, we started off with the Poke ($9) and Ital Vital veggies, and finished with the special (16 oz steak). The Poke worked well with the rice, greens, and avocado aioli but was a little lacking in size for the poke portion. The Ital Vital, which was essentially a large plate of seasonal veggies, was really flavorful; only part I didn't like were the peppers in it. Some were not spicy at all and some were spicy af. We ordered the steak medium-rare and were pleasantly surprised at the size when it arrived - I guess we forgot what a 16oz steak looked like! It was really well-seasoned and flavored, but the cut wasn't as great as I had hoped, with some portions being a little stringy and difficult to cut. The fact that portions of it were still a little on the rare side didn't help either. I would like to try their outdoor patio on a nice day eventually. We ordered the Poke for an appetizer and it was a very good portion which my girlfriend and I split. I got the Deluxe Bowl which came with salmon, pieces of filet and a slaw. My girlfriend got the grilled salmon filet entree and it came with Brussels sprouts and a very good sauce at the bottom. Poke was $10, Deluxe bowl was $19 and the grilled salmon was $19. Overall, good pricing for very good food. The boathouse collective is a very lively environment with good food and a decent selection of wines. I came in at around happy hour and we sat at the outside patio area. Heaters were on and the atmosphere was comfortable. There was no menu for the beer but the waiters know all of them at request. I ordered the special, a yellowfin collar with crispy rice. Although priced a little high $28 for a bar, the meal was delectable. The fish was cooked to absolute perfection and was falling right off the collarbone. The sauce was not overwhelming the flavor of the fish. Our server highly recommended it and I have zero regrets. I would absolutely come back. The value is great, reasonable alcohol prices with a decent selection, and food to write home about. read more

This place is located a little bit away from everything else (at least it seems that way at night anyways), so it can be a little tricky to find cause the location seems odd. Parking can be a little bit tricky as well. There are some spots along the street, but if you can't find any there is also $5 valet service. On Fridays and Saturdays they have a live band playing at night, but the seats in there fill up fast, and according to our server, a lot of people sit there for most of the night to enjoy the show. We ended up being seated outside, but the vibe and feel was still nice as well. The whole place looks very nice with the lighting, live music, and decoration, a bit of a "hipster" kind of vibe. It is a fun place to eat and chat with friends. Despite this though, the food was lacking and not all that good for the price point. My friends and I shared the Catch of the Day, which was a swordfish curry, the filet medallions, the chicken katsu, and some fries. The swordfish curry had a giant piece of swordfish that was cooked well, but the curry sauce it came in tasted like one of those instant Japanese Golden curry packs and at $19 a plate, I expected something a little more interesting than curry I could make at home for a lot less. The fillet medallions were a bit boring as well, the meat was cooked okay, but it lacked the perfection and finesse I would expect from a good fillet. The kind of spicy sauce that went with it didn't really add much either, just a sweet kind of taste. The chicken cats was just like regular chicken katsu you can get from a Japanese restaurant, and it was pretty good but it was nothing special. The fries came with an interesting kind of mayo-like sauce, but they were just fries. For drinks I got the basil greyhound, and it was a bit strong, in the sense that it was mostly just an alcohol taste, you couldn't really taste the grapefruit or anything. A very mellow and casual environment and the ceiling is garnished with surfboards. The inside has a stage with live music. They have individual tables, long group tables and a full bar. There's no real way to describe this. You have to see it to believe it. ~Service-5 Stars Service was excellent. I could not ask for better. ~Food-2.5 Stars I came during happy hour and the menu is amended. I had everything on the menu but for one item. The Chicken Katsu, while tasty, had bones in it. The Pork Belly--well the sauce was too overwhelming. The ahi was extremely dry on the sandwich. Even the lettuce was a tad wilted. What did I like? Well, I liked the chips and dip and the grilled cheese was pretty darn good. The little one liked it, as well. So, I wish I could have tried the entire menu. I love the set up here. I attended a private party on Sunday at the Boathouse Collective. My friend is a local artist; she had an art show at the Boathouse Collective, so I attended to support her. I hadn't heard about Boathouse Collective before but it's a great space. Very hipster, like the space at the LAB or the Packing House. The Boathouse Collective is a restaurant that serves tapas, but I didn't get to try any of the food. The art show was during it's off business hours so the only thing open was the bar. The bartenders were busy so I asked for a white wine. He looked at me quizzically and asked if I wanted Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Riesling. Normally, at these events, they have a limited offering of drinks but apparently, the full bar was in force. My glass of wine was $10. Not bad but not cheap either. Having arrived shortly after half past 7, the place was buzzing with people. There is a stage next to the indoor dining area where they have live music. The outdoor space has communal tables surrounded by succulents and string lights. The decor is very industrial and urban. I look forward to revisiting so I can try the food. read more

So been here a few times now and thinking I"m overdue on my review here! I've been really impressed with the food here -- very fresh and unique combinations that work! My favs include the poke (blueberries and all!) and the steak tataki. I also really like the buratta although it's more of a salad w buratta but it works well w the spicy arugula and mushrooms. The cocktails are also pretty fabulous here as well -- the mixers taste very fresh and drinks are bright and flavorful. Being a gin drinker, I fell in love with the "Easy Street" and highly recommend. :) They have a great HH 5-6:30 Tues-Sat where you can sample a lot of their top dishes for a fraction of the price. I highly suggest this for your first visit if you can. One downside to BC is the parking can be a hassle as they dont' have a private lot so your'e left w street parking (can get crowded) or taking your chances at the neighboring business after-hours lots.. This is one of those places that are bound to get mixed reviews. Fitting the role of the latest hipster eccentric hot spot in Costa Mesa, complete with a campy vibe and decked out with kitschy decor and string lights, it's sure to draw a curious crowd. And crowded it was when we went to dine here on a chilly Friday night. Some will love the attractive outdoor space and the live music, with flowing drinks and carefree dancing. Others will judge this place as gimmicky and pretentious, with as much authenticity as an Orange County hipster. Undoubtedly some will come with unrealistically high expectations. But if you can get past all the pretense, you will see that the chefs here are doing some bold things, and creating dishes that are not only interesting, but delicious. We started with the kale salad, which came with a nicely poached runny egg that complimented the colorful, yet simply dressed greens well. Next up was the calamari & prawns, which was a simple preparation, but perfectly executed. The squid and prawns were grilled just to the point of tender, and had a subtle smokey flavor that was delicate but savory. We ordered the crispy rice as an afterthought, but found it to be the most interesting thing we ate that night. I'm accustomed to eating yaki onigiri at yakitori joints, so I was expecting the great texture without a ton of flavor. This grilled rice ball was the most flavorful one I have ever tasted, and it left me guessing at ingredients with each bite. Who knew such a small dish could be so complex. The roasted half jidori chicken was juicy and delicious as well, and cooked the way I imagine a good roasted chicken should be. The star of the night however was the 16 oz. pork porterhouse. A lot of New American eateries are offering this type of chop, but the version here was the best I've had all year. The beautifully charred top loin came thicker than a phone book, and the perfect tenderness eluded to a brining process that must have taken hours. It was seasoned adequately while still allowing us to enjoy the full flavor of the pork. The generous portion was certainly appreciated as well. There were a lot of things going on when we visited this place that night. The crowded bar, the live music, the spontaneous dancing and the slightly slow service that comes with all of this. But despite the small distractions, the food and drinks were what stood out to us. And that itself is worth noting. The Boathouse Collective is not the type of restaurant that appeals to me on a lot of levels, but the food that they offer here certainly does. On Fridays, they have live music. Every day they serve some of the LA area's best food. Here's what we ordered: 1) Steak tataki- Amazing and will melt in your mouth. What an excellent little find! Boathouse Collective is located on the "wrong side of the tracks" in Costa Mesa. I love finding places like this off the radar. The complimentary appetizer of homemade bean dip and tortillas was delicious (but they took it away too fast!). Remember that canned bean dip at the supermarket in the chip section? This is a freshly made and much healthier version of that- and just as addictive... Our waiter, Parc, was very mellow & cool. He patiently explained menu items and gave us suggestions. We started, of course, with drinks. My guy ordered the Good Eye Might ($14) made with Tito's Vodka, lime, pineapple shrub & Yellow Chartreuse- a pretty presentation and a light taste (but at a Newport Beach price!). I tried the Basil Greyhound ($12) with vodka, fresh grapefruit, fresh basil & grapefruit liquor - very strong & tasty! The burrata appetizer ($13) was unusual in that it came with fresh fruit and toast. Refreshing and different. We also had the Steak Tataki ($12) which was amazingly delicious. We weren't planning on having dessert, but Parc tempted us with the bread pudding ($10) speckled with dry fruit. It was a hit and the envy of surrounding tables. A bunch of us came here for a charity event a couple Friday's ago and had a blast! The venue itself was super neato....the outdoor part had oversized picnic tables that were being used for dining as were the tables inside where the bar was located. Bartenders were super busy but provided great service. I flagged down one of them for a couple drinks but she told me she was responsible for the restaurant side. When she saw that after five minutes I wasn't able to get anyone else' attention, she went ahead and made my drinks for me. Drinks were fantastic! Of their specialty cocktails, the Kapri Son was my favorite. Another one made with chamomile tea was also delicious. Even their regular classic cocktails were well-poured. The music started indoors around 10:30...it was a little loud (not the best acoustics??) so a few of us went outside which, by this time, had emptied out. We grabbed a table (after 10, it's a free for all) and just hung out, listening to the music and sipping on our drinks. Definitely want to come back for dinner next time! read more

Came for dinner before the live band started. It was very loud and hard to converse once they did start playing. Chicken and waffles: I lived in ATL for 6 years, so I know good chicken and waffles. The fried chicken was moist but very bland. The waffle was crunchy and crisp but very oily. Kale salad: dressing was very lemony, the egg was a little too well done. I normally don't leave bad reviews but i couldn't hold back on this one .... A few weekends ago i booked a table of 4. The place is kinda unassuming and low key ; which was the whole point of going there . Our sever sat us down and gave us the menus. We waited at least 30min before she took our drink orders and brought us water . We ordered a few appetizers ( we kinda got worried that it would take her a while to come back ). When our drinks finally arrived after another 30 min , they brought out the appetizers . Definitely not shareable portions . Super small and just meh... Then we ordered our main dishes ... it took us literally 45 min to get our servers attention. We then realized she was the ONLY server in the whole restaurant. There were helpers and the hostess ( helping out ) but no other server!!! When our food finally arrived, we started eating and then suddenly my friend stop eating his burger . He split it open and guess what ??? RAW meat ...and I don't mean rare ... BTW, he had asked for it well done ... please see picture of the burger . My husband's friend had his birthday party here and it was perfect: some sat, some stood, we ate delicious Belgian fries and drank beer and wine and enjoyed the live music. On another night, my girlfriend and I celebrated her bday and we happened upon Trivia Night serendipitously and we stayed and played and had the greatest time ‍!! I had never heard of this place before, but I came here for my friend's birthday on a Saturday night. She had to make reservations since there were 15 of us. Luckily for us we were able to get a reservation 2 days prior. We sat outside in the patio and the table was unique and interesting, instead of being long and rectangular, it was a huge square. It made talking to we've gone much easier and you didn't really have to shout. I'll start with the service because I find it to be one of those things that makes or breaks a place. The service was mostly efficient and speedy, minus one of my friends having to wait rather long for his food and drink. At the end of the meal they also were very nice and split the bill up individually. That can always be a headache, trying to split up a $300+ bill between 15 people. We really appreciated that and we hope other places take note. As for the food, well it was delicious. I got the 8oz burger with fingerlings (sautéed potatoes). That runs for $15, which is not a bad price at all especially since it's actually a lot of food. The burger was excellent and cooked exactly how I wanted it. What really blew me away were the potatoes, holy hell they were amazing. A bunch of my friends ordered ordered the steak or pork chop and they seemed to really enjoy those. I found Boathouse Collective on an article titled "15 OC Happy Hours That Will Help You Forget It's Only Monday" LOL. I'm sold. Came here at the end of the week with my coworkers and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Pros: +good service +hipster interior design +fun environment +clean bathroom +yummy cocktails Cons: -Location: there was no large sign or anything to mark the restaurant. I drove past it completely and had to detour around :/ -Parking: is horrendous. If you're lucky they have a tiny front lot or else you'll have to brave street parking. I parked on Ohms Way (after you turn into Farad Street) and there's plenty of parking there! Just a two minute walk to the front door :) -HH menu: was not really extensive or much of a discount. I actually just bought a drink for full price and another beer for $2 off. Wish there were more food items though! Food was ok. Nothing was amazing but really I just ordered food so I wouldn't get too drunk lol ya girl has to drive home you know~ If you are going to order food, I'd recommend the poke bowl over the karaage chicken! Not that the karaage chicken tasted bad, but the portion was kinda small (like literally three pieces of chicken LOL). Overall 3.5 stars from me! I would give this place 10 stars if I could. My wife and I had dinner on Saturday night. It was, simply put, one of the better all-around restaurant experiences I have had in at least a year. Everything was A+! The food was remarkable, and quite a value for the price. I really thought the menu was well-thought out and eclectic, they do wonders with lots of fresh ingredients, and their chef is making some inspired choices in the way he or she combines flavors. The cocktail and wine list was wonderfully well-curated and creative, and the service was top-notch. You do sit family style, and they have live music, so it is a bit on the noisy side, but not in any negative or distracting way, in fact, the buzz added to the ambiance, and we had some very nice conversations with our neighbors about the wonderful food and drink. I only wish this place were closer to my home; if it was, they would probably collect at least a quarter of my paycheck! Well done Boathouse Collective! read more

This restaurant was very disappointing with service and food. We reserved the patio for my Mothers 90th Birthday party. Our server dumped a platter of filet mignon bloody broth in a guests brand new Louis Vuitton $2,300 purse/bag. The server was apologetic and said the restaurant would make it right. They did NOT and wouldn't even cover the $550 cleaning bill with receipt from Louis Vuitton cleaning fee. Our restaurant check for the meal was about $2,500 I do not appreciate people who lie. They also completely ignored a letter of requests from an attorney! I wouldn't give my money to a business of this low esteem. read more

This is such a cool spot in my neighborhood. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and their specialty cocktail selection is pretty wide. We tried a few of them, i had the Basil Greyhound and the Nar Nar both were delicious. My friend had the Good Eye Might and Boathouse Sour...im not a fan of sour but the Good Eye was yummy. Great find for cocktails and apps in Costa Mesa! I love the outdoor seating. It's definitely a great combination of fine dining with a laid-back SoCal feel. I also saw a concert here and this place makes for a great music venue although it was a little hot inside. Definitely making more trips here with summer coming up! read more

Super glad we came here! I've heard about this place for quite a while now and glad I made it in this past Saturday. Cute decor, and awesome little patio! We came in on Saturday around 7/730 and were seated right away. The patio had great heaters that our Mario Lopez look-a-like server turned on for us, and made for a pleasant evening on the patio! Food- we ordered the fries and Burrata as an appetizer. The fries were yummy and came with a great aioli dip. The burrata was delicious, and had mushrooms, and a nice lemony arugula with it!!! For our course we split the Filet Medallions that came with sticky rice. There was this yummy habanero sauce accompanied with it that was definitely spicy but great flavor!
