His soup was very cold my mashed potatoes was cold, I had to ask for pepper. The waiter never came back to ask if everything was good or did we want anything else I had to get up to find him to ask for a go box and the check . We came to dinner here, our second time ever and it was absolutely amazing! We did come here off a groupon so the menu was limited, but hey--it was sooo good nonetheless. As you can see here the portions are HUGE, so I was able to eat until I was full and take some to go. The pasta white wine sauce was not heavy at all, so it was a very fresh and enjoyable meal to eat. Afterwards we got this dessert, again, big portions-- we were really full, so we were able to share this once piece between the four of us. Wonderful restaurant near Metro Center - City Center. I went there today for the first time for a work lunch. Great ambiance, attentive staff, and delicious food! The freshly baked bread was warm, soft, and so tasty! I got the chicken Parmesan, and it was delicious! It was served on a bed of spaghetti. I did ask for another pasta, but that was the only one available. My boss got one of the specials of the day - a Caesar salad with grilled scallops. I thought it looked amazing, and she really enjoyed it. The restaurant has that upscale, classy steakhouse feel to it, and our table near the window was perfect for people watching! Came in on Valentine's Day and enjoyed their specialized menu. I started with some oysters that were perfect. The ambiance was sub par. I didn't really give the vibe of Valentine's Day at all. It's very old school. The food and drinks weren't that great either. The service missed the mark as well. Our waiter sat us down and didn't come back to check on us for a while at least 20 minutes. He then seated a table of at least 15 or so men at a large table next to us and began taking their orders before coming to take ours. Visiting DC and happened to be solo. Saw there was a $80 for $40 Groupon and this happened to be near my hotel. Came on a Monday night around 630pm. They were moderately busy with mostly business men in suits. As I was by myself I could get a good feel for the vibe and was listening on conversations mostly bosterous boys club politics type conversations, but to me, fascinating and comfortable. Mike and Monica were my servers and everything was impecible. I ordered wine, petite filet ordered medium with a holondaise sauce , green beens, coffee and the lava cake. Everything was cooked to perfection and I ate everything! The green beens were perfectly salty, meat was super tender, sauce was thick and rich, cake was sweet and plentiful. After being in the hot humid sun all day and walking 15-20 miles I was so hungry for a relaxing and great meal. This was the best meal I have had in a very long time. We tried their prix fixe menu for dinner for our anniversary. The restaurant was hopping, I'll give it that, but the service was ... meh. I understand that it was busy, but our server seemed very uninterested in making our evening and experience enjoyable even though I did explain (when making the reservation) that it was the anniversary. Fortunately, they did provide glasses and silverware as some restaurants have begun using disposable wear, which we hate both for the environment and in general. I had the filet and my husband had the chicken marsala. The filet was good, I'll give it that. It was juicy, crisp on the outside, and perfectly medium rare. The mushrooms were EXQUISITE and I can't wait to finish them tomorrow. The spinach was...eh. Lightly wilted, served with large unminced cloves of garlic and NO SALT, I love spinach and garlic, but the seasoning was just OFF. I have to say that the restaurant is an old-timey steakhouse. It's dark with dark wood and ambient lighting--which hides a multitude of sins. The kitchen does an excellent job. The menu is small but it appears that what they do, they do well. The restaurant has the patio open for dining, and the street wasn't very busy, which is a plus. We intended to try to dine outside, but it started raining just as we arrived, but they're pretty effective at maintaining social distancing, but they didn't ask for any information for contact tracing and there were no regulations on patrons going to the bathrooms at all, which was surprising. My food was excellent, and my husband really enjoyed his chicken marsala, which looked juicy and well-seasoned. They were out of broccolini, which was disappointing, and we were also unable to try the mashed potatoes. Overall, it's a solid 3.5. For starters, we decided upon the seafood bouquet for three. It included a good amount of lump crab meat, cocktail strip, and three lobster halves. The seafood was very fresh and chilled perfectly. For my entree, I ordered the filet mignon and a side of sautéed garlic spinach. The steak was served with a side of crispy potato strings, as well as some micro greens. I didn't touch the micro greens since they didn't appear to be dressed, and the potato strings tasted as you'd expect. The steak was just okay to me. They are cooked in the classic style, charred in animal fat, but I would've appreciated some type of additional flavor. It just tasted like charred meat. This was my second time here and for some reason, the experience was way better this time around. Our server, Tom, was awesome!! He was super personable and attentive. We ordered based on his recommendations: the ribeye (bone in!) and the 2 pound Maine Lobster (can't beat that price at $20/lb). Also, got a small side of brussel sprouts with bacon. The ribeye was marinated and cooked really well and the lobster was fresh. I'd probably go for a different side next time since the brussels were originally supposed to be richer and creamier with blue cheese. Since I asked them to take it out due to my intolerence for dairy, it just seemed like it was missing something, literally. I got seated fairly quickly and my server was pleasant. She brought a half loaf of fresh-baked bread, which was the highlight of my meal. I asked which was better, the burger or the French dip. She recommended the French dip, so I ordered it. That was a mistake. The sandwich consisted of thick-cut warmed roast beef with slightly melted cheese on a cold French roll. It had a sauce (some on the sandwich and some in a bowl) that was like thick French onion soup. Not au jus, and not hot - slightly gelatinous. It came with French fries that were fairly good. I was starved and needed to get the airport, so I didn't send it back, but it was a chore to eat it. Sadly it was the worst French dip I've eaten - and I've had a lot of them over the years. To boot it cost over $20, making it one of the most expensive I've had as well. In short, don't order the French dip here. July 2019. Worst steak I've ever had. I hope Bobby's Groupon special gets him enough business so that he can go buy some salt to put on his flavorless food. Clutching to the recognition of yesterday, this has-been "steak"house is not worth your money. I had the Bobby Van's Crab Cake, Ribeye Steak, Truffle Oil and Parmesan Fries, Sautéed Mushrooms, and a glass of the Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc. Crab Cake: A solid, middle-of-the-road crab cake. Dense with crab and cooked appropriately. Seasoning was okay, but light. I would have liked more of the accompanying sauce. I would've asked for it, but no waitstaff was around. Ribeye Steak: Cooked to a lop-sided medium rare (more medium at one end and more rare at the other end), this flavorless steak is the worst I've ever had. It was basically a beautiful bone-in ribeye chargrilled and basted with butter + aromatics but with zero seasoning and zero salt. It was just a hunk of cooked meat with butter on it. Menu price for it was $53 dollars. INSANE. If I hadn't bought the Groupon, I would have sent it back and ordered something else. I forced myself to eat part of it and took the rest home for the dog. Truly disappointing. The chef/owners must be in denial bc there is no way this steak is worth even half of the $53 price tag. I had to drown this steak in A1 just to get through what little I ate. Truffle Oil and Parmesan Fries: Crispy outside, fluffy inside, truffle oil, with grated Parmesan cheese effortlessly dumped on top. ZERO salt or seasoning and served with ketchup? What about truffle oil and parmesan makes you think ketchup is a good accompaniment? The no seasoning made the truffle oil and Parmesan pointless. No effort, no pride, and unpleasant. Sautéed Mushrooms: Just cooked mushrooms. Zero salt, zero seasoning, zero flavor. Unpleasant. Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc: Had it before and it's good. However, I received less than a full pour. Trying to save on bar costs or inattentive to basic detail? Service: Server was polite, when he decided to be around. Never checked if I needed anything during a course, only after. Seemed oblivious. Didn't have the specials memorized, so awkwardly kept referring to a "cheat sheet." Didn't know how food items were prepared. Bobby Van's House Steak sauce: This is cocktail sauce with sugar and molasses. Simply put, it's not good. Tried some on the steak and nothing about it works. Atmosphere: 1980 called. It wants its decorations and furniture back. Obviously a former "good 'ol boy" haven. The country music didn't fit the aesthetic of the decorum or the tie and jacket attire of the waitstaff. Final Thoughts: You can dress up your waitstaff in ties and put big prices on your menu, but that doesn't mean your food is any good. I looked at the menu before I sauntered on over. Much to my culinary delight, they offered my personal trifecta (French onion soup, filet mignon and mashed). If done right, it's a no fail meal. The service and company next to me at the bar were perfect. The 2 people who will remain anonymous were happily sipping vino. They both got increasingly funny and friendly. Wine does that and I wasn't mad. The diet Coke ratios were off. Lacked co2 and that fizz that I personally dig. The onion soup was not fabulous. They definitely have a salamander because the gruyere was crispy and fabulous. The soup itself was over done. A simple recipe should be kept simple in my opinion. I'm in the business. Not being a jerk, just saying, it needs to be revamped. The filet had a lovely crust, just enough s&p and a gorgeous med rare center. I probably could have cut it with a fork. I do however have manners and used a knife. It was delicious and that's all I care about. The spuds were decent. In my opinion, they were too smooth. If I over creamed, I'd have piped them over the filet and sent it through the salamander. Different strokes though. Overall, I'd give these awesome people a 8 out of 10. Minor tweaks...easy breezy.
