We started with calamari and bang bang shrimp!! Yummmmm Then for entrees I had the surf & turf. A 1lb 1/2 of lobster and 10 Oz Filet Mignon nestled on moist mashed potatoes. I have seen Bobby Van's across the street from Joe's Seafood, Steak, etc., where I usually eat and thought I would give it a try during Restaurant Week. It was a disappointing experience. The start was good. An excellent shrimp cocktail followed by a nice Caesar salad. Unfortunately, I enjoyed only two bites out of my entire NY strip. The rest seemed to be mostly gristle. It was the worst steak I have had in a long time. It was difficult to cut with a steak knife. The haricots verts and roasted potato sides were good, but this is a steakhouse. Service was desultory. When I thanked the server for refilling my wine glass, he would typically say nothing or "mmm mmm." Seeing that I eaten only a few bites, he asked if I wanted to take the leftover steak home. I said "no, it wasn't very good." His response was to recite the dessert menu. A good feature was half-priced bottles of wine on Saturdays. But, they served me a different vintage (2015) than the one shown in the wine list (2014). The menus are paper due to COVID restrictions. If the menus are being printed anyway, how difficult could it be to have an accurate wine list? To end on a positive note, the chocolate lava cake a la mode was pretty tasty. read more

We came to dinner here, our second time ever and it was absolutely amazing! We did come here off a groupon so the menu was limited, but hey--it was sooo good nonetheless. As you can see here the portions are HUGE, so I was able to eat until I was full and take some to go. The pasta white wine sauce was not heavy at all, so it was a very fresh and enjoyable meal to eat. Afterwards we got this dessert, again, big portions-- we were really full, so we were able to share this once piece between the four of us. We went there for lunch May 10,2025, we were greeted and seated, and had a waiter to begin taking our order and immediately the waiter changed ...for some reason. My companion ordered the soup of the day I ordered a crab cake sandwich with mashed potatoes.. We both had Gingerale soda we asked for light ice and drinks came back filled with ice and very flat. His soup was very cold my mashed potatoes was cold, I had to ask for pepper. The waiter never came back to ask if everything was good or did we want anything else I had to get up to find him to ask for a go box and the check . Wonderful restaurant near Metro Center - City Center. I went there today for the first time for a work lunch. Great ambiance, attentive staff, and delicious food! The freshly baked bread was warm, soft, and so tasty! I got the chicken Parmesan, and it was delicious! It was served on a bed of spaghetti. I did ask for another pasta, but that was the only one available. My boss got one of the specials of the day - a Caesar salad with grilled scallops. Came in on Valentine's Day and enjoyed their specialized menu. I started with some oysters that were perfect. The ambiance was sub par. I didn't really give the vibe of Valentine's Day at all. It's very old school. The food and drinks weren't that great either. The service missed the mark as well. Our waiter sat us down and didn't come back to check on us for a while at least 20 minutes. He then seated a table of at least 15 or so men at a large table next to us and began taking their orders before coming to take ours. They were moderately busy with mostly business men in suits. As I was by myself I could get a good feel for the vibe and was listening on conversations mostly bosterous boys club politics type conversations, but to me, fascinating and comfortable. Mike and Monica were my servers and everything was impecible. I ordered wine, petite filet ordered medium with a holondaise sauce , green beens, coffee and the lava cake. Everything was cooked to perfection and I ate everything! The green beens were perfectly salty, meat was super tender, sauce was thick and rich, cake was sweet and plentiful. After being in the hot humid sun all day and walking 15-20 miles I was so hungry for a relaxing and great meal. This was the best meal I have had in a very long time. So we were the dreaded GROUPON couple. We were feeling kinda cringe-worthy with our $80 3-course meal deal. We rolled in and were promptly seated, and greeted with a great attitude about Groupon. We had a fixed menu (part of a big group), and I had the onion soup (lukewarm), filet mignon (asked for medium-rare but got medium-well instead; friend asked for medium-well and hers came out well done and dry!), and for dessert I had the lemon cake (tasty but plating was sad--you can tell it was rushed). Service was okay, but slow. We were there with a big group, so that definitely affected service and quality. Being a first-time for me at this place, I was expecting more from a Bobby Van's. This was totally not what we expected. My boyfriend and I came here on Valentine's Day and the food was awful. My drink was also awful. We got the $22 extra of crabmeat on our filet mignons and the crab meat was almost frozen cold. Our steaks were burnt. Our total was almost $400 and was not worth it AT ALL. We didn't even want to complain because it was Valentine's Day and we wanted to enjoy ourselves but we were pissed the entire time every piece of food and drink came out. Lots of waiters walking around keeping you served and happy. Came in and was asked if I was having a full dinner, and when I said that I wanted a couple of appetizers and dessert, was told to go to the bar area. I asked for a table and was told that they were reserved for full meals. As I turned t9 leave a waiter apologized and walked me to a beautiful table outside to sit and people watch. We tried their prix fixe menu for dinner for our anniversary. The restaurant was hopping, I'll give it that, but the service was ... meh. I understand that it was busy, but our server seemed very uninterested in making our evening and experience enjoyable even though I did explain (when making the reservation) that it was the anniversary. Smh. We came in and had to follow the maitre'd around the restaurant in a circle to our table. We were sat in one of the banquet rooms off of the main dining room, and in their favor, it does appear that they have aligned the tables to satisfy social distancing guidelines. The wait staff all wore masks and they provided paper menus. Fortunately, they did provide glasses and silverware as some restaurants have begun using disposable wear, which we hate both for the environment and in general. I had the filet and my husband had the chicken marsala. The filet was good, I'll give it that. It was juicy, crisp on the outside, and perfectly medium rare. The mushrooms were EXQUISITE and I can't wait to finish them tomorrow. The spinach was...eh. Lightly wilted, served with large unminced cloves of garlic and NO SALT, I love spinach and garlic, but the seasoning was just OFF. I have to say that the restaurant is an old-timey steakhouse. It's dark with dark wood and ambient lighting--which hides a multitude of sins. The kitchen does an excellent job. The menu is small but it appears that what they do, they do well. The restaurant has the patio open for dining, and the street wasn't very busy, which is a plus. We intended to try to dine outside, but it started raining just as we arrived, but they're pretty effective at maintaining social distancing, but they didn't ask for any information for contact tracing and there were no regulations on patrons going to the bathrooms at all, which was surprising. My food was excellent, and my husband really enjoyed his chicken marsala, which looked juicy and well-seasoned. They were out of broccolini, which was disappointing, and we were also unable to try the mashed potatoes. Overall, it's a solid 3.5. There are a lot of better steakhouses out there, but if you have a Groupon or are in the area, it's a decent choice. read more

I'd never heard of Bobby Van's until I was invited for a birthday dinner. Upon entry, it looks like your usual upscale steakhouse-- lots of wood furnishings, white table clothes, and waiters in formal attire. The waiter attended to us quickly, and so the evening began. For starters, we decided upon the seafood bouquet for three. It included a good amount of lump crab meat, cocktail strip, and three lobster halves. The seafood was very fresh and chilled perfectly. For my entree, I ordered the filet mignon and a side of sautéed garlic spinach. The steak was served with a side of crispy potato strings, as well as some micro greens. I didn't touch the micro greens since they didn't appear to be dressed, and the potato strings tasted as you'd expect. The steak was just okay to me. They are cooked in the classic style, charred in animal fat, but I would've appreciated some type of additional flavor. It just tasted like charred meat. I would give this place another try, but for happy hour because steakhouses usually have great HHs! read more

This was my second time here and for some reason, the experience was way better this time around. Our server, Tom, was awesome!! He was super personable and attentive. We ordered based on his recommendations: the ribeye (bone in!) and the 2 pound Maine Lobster (can't beat that price at $20/lb). Also, got a small side of brussel sprouts with bacon. The ribeye was marinated and cooked really well and the lobster was fresh. I'd probably go for a different side next time since the brussels were originally supposed to be richer and creamier with blue cheese. Since I asked them to take it out due to my intolerence for dairy, it just seemed like it was missing something, literally. We ended our meal with a classic creme brulee - also Tom's recommendation and this proved to be a great choice again. I'm a dessert queen so I knew from the first bite that I'd had a satisfying meal. I was seated at a booth and my waiter appeared pretty quickly. I chose the tap water and looked over the menu while he brought crusty French bread out with whipped butter. Yum! I broke the meal into 4 courses. I started with a half dozen oysters on the half shell. Meaty, good size, and delicious! Next i had escargot which came with individual little roasts to eat it with. Unlike many places the escargot was not drowned in cheese. It was also delicious. Then came the filet mignon and a side of asparagus. I requested medium and the meat was perfectly prepared to that temperature. It came with some crispy potato sticks which were a surprise but good. The asparagus was wonderful, and with the squeeze of a lemon, tasted delicious. I finished off the meal with chocolate mousse cake but without the whipped cream. It took was silky smooth and just what you'd want in a chocolate mousse cake. I had coffee with dessert. My waiter surprised me by thanking me for being such a pleasure to wait on. He said I was polite and pleasant and he really appreciated it because not everyone is. He gave me the restaurant calling card with his name and said to ask for his section anytime I returned. It made me wonder exactly how rude normal customers in DC are because I just behaved as I always do. Servers are people and not my personal meal slave so I treat them as I would hope to be treated. It's not difficult. The entire staff was nice and they never let an empty plate sit for long before taking it away, and my tea glass was never empty.
