I stayed at the hotel across the street from Bobby Van's, so I thought I'd check it out. They have a nice patio and it was a beautiful day in DC. I got seated fairly quickly and my server was pleasant. She brought a half loaf of fresh-baked bread, which was the highlight of my meal. I asked which was better, the burger or the French dip. She recommended the French dip, so I ordered it. That was a mistake. The sandwich consisted of thick-cut warmed roast beef with slightly melted cheese on a cold French roll. It had a sauce (some on the sandwich and some in a bowl) that was like thick French onion soup. Not au jus, and not hot - slightly gelatinous. It came with French fries that were fairly good. I was starved and needed to get the airport, so I didn't send it back, but it was a chore to eat it. Sadly it was the worst French dip I've eaten - and I've had a lot of them over the years. To boot it cost over $20, making it one of the most expensive I've had as well. In short, don't order the French dip here. July 2019. Worst steak I've ever had. I hope Bobby's Groupon special gets him enough business so that he can go buy some salt to put on his flavorless food. Clutching to the recognition of yesterday, this has-been "steak"house is not worth your money. I had the Bobby Van's Crab Cake, Ribeye Steak, Truffle Oil and Parmesan Fries, Sautéed Mushrooms, and a glass of the Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc. Crab Cake: A solid, middle-of-the-road crab cake. Dense with crab and cooked appropriately. Seasoning was okay, but light. I would have liked more of the accompanying sauce. I would've asked for it, but no waitstaff was around. Ribeye Steak: Cooked to a lop-sided medium rare (more medium at one end and more rare at the other end), this flavorless steak is the worst I've ever had. It was basically a beautiful bone-in ribeye chargrilled and basted with butter + aromatics but with zero seasoning and zero salt. It was just a hunk of cooked meat with butter on it. Menu price for it was $53 dollars. INSANE. If I hadn't bought the Groupon, I would have sent it back and ordered something else. I forced myself to eat part of it and took the rest home for the dog. Truly disappointing. The chef/owners must be in denial bc there is no way this steak is worth even half of the $53 price tag. I had to drown this steak in A1 just to get through what little I ate. Truffle Oil and Parmesan Fries: Crispy outside, fluffy inside, truffle oil, with grated Parmesan cheese effortlessly dumped on top. ZERO salt or seasoning and served with ketchup? What about truffle oil and parmesan makes you think ketchup is a good accompaniment? The no seasoning made the truffle oil and Parmesan pointless. No effort, no pride, and unpleasant. Sautéed Mushrooms: Just cooked mushrooms. Zero salt, zero seasoning, zero flavor. Unpleasant. Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc: Had it before and it's good. However, I received less than a full pour. Trying to save on bar costs or inattentive to basic detail? Service: Server was polite, when he decided to be around. Never checked if I needed anything during a course, only after. Seemed oblivious. Didn't have the specials memorized, so awkwardly kept referring to a "cheat sheet." Didn't know how food items were prepared. Bobby Van's House Steak sauce: This is cocktail sauce with sugar and molasses. Simply put, it's not good. Tried some on the steak and nothing about it works. Atmosphere: 1980 called. It wants its decorations and furniture back. Obviously a former "good 'ol boy" haven. The country music didn't fit the aesthetic of the decorum or the tie and jacket attire of the waitstaff. Final Thoughts: You can dress up your waitstaff in ties and put big prices on your menu, but that doesn't mean your food is any good. It's no wonder this business needed to put out a Groupon. read more

I looked at the menu before I sauntered on over. Much to my culinary delight, they offered my personal trifecta (French onion soup, filet mignon and mashed). If done right, it's a no fail meal. The service and company next to me at the bar were perfect. The 2 people who will remain anonymous were happily sipping vino. They both got increasingly funny and friendly. Wine does that and I wasn't mad. The diet Coke ratios were off. Lacked co2 and that fizz that I personally dig. The onion soup was not fabulous. They definitely have a salamander because the gruyere was crispy and fabulous. The soup itself was over done. A simple recipe should be kept simple in my opinion. I'm in the business. Not being a jerk, just saying, it needs to be revamped. The filet had a lovely crust, just enough s&p and a gorgeous med rare center. I probably could have cut it with a fork. I do however have manners and used a knife. It was delicious and that's all I care about. The spuds were decent. In my opinion, they were too smooth. If I over creamed, I'd have piped them over the filet and sent it through the salamander. Different strokes though. Overall, I'd give these awesome people a 8 out of 10. Minor tweaks...easy breezy. Tonight we met up with one of my best friends at Bobby Vans. We were promptly seated and our drink order taken. They delivered an expertly crafted Manhattan with Rye. I was very pleased because to me Rye is the way to have it. It was delicious. Our server took our dinner order. I ordered oysters, a ribeye, and glass of Stags Leap Cab Sav, and cheesecake with coffee. The oysters came promptly and were very tasty. The ribeye came in a reasonable amount of time and was expertly prepared. An absolutely delicious cut of meat. The cheesecake which I shared with another at my tabke was the tastiest ive had in a while. Real NY style through and through. Five star experience. Great food, Great drinks, Great Service. Beware of the Bait and Switch!! We visited BV's a few weeks ago when in DC. The good news - service was great, nice outdoor seating, food was fine. The bad news. It was a Saturday night about 3 weeks ago. BV's has a Saturday night deal where bottles of wine are half price. We ordered a very nice red wine which was offered on the menu for the 2011 vintage at $145. After a few minutes, our server told us that they didn't have that vintage. She said they had a 2016. We said fine, fully expecting that they would adjust the price to reflect the vintage. The bill was received without any adjustment. Yes - it was half price from the $145 (we were charged $72.50) - but had the 2016 been on the menu, it would have probably been a $60 bottle of wine (we should have paid $30) . My partner was kind and paid the bill. We told the server that we knew we had been taken advantage of and asked that the manager be told that it was a terrible business practice. The server relayed the message -- we got the sense this wasn't the only time this happened. The manager never came over and apologized or offered to correct the bill. This made me think it was a common business practice at this BVs. Bottom line - beware of the bait and switch at this restaurant. You've been warned!!!! read more

Bobby Van's is a class act steakhouse. This is delicious upscale dining and they definitely know how to prepare a steak. The flavors and tenderness are perfect. The portions are large and even the sides are a step above other steakhouses in the area. The cream of spinach is loaded with you guessed it, spinach and the asparagus is sauteed with garlic and sundried tomatoes...just yum. I came to this place a very long time ago, but I am writing them a review because I liked it so much. I got their petite filet mignon, but surprisingly, it was bigger than it looks on photos and was enough to fill me up for dinner. It comes with a simple side of potato chips and a sprig of watercrest, which accompanied the meat really well. The meat was really tender, moist, and perfectly seasoned. In other words, it was cooked PERFECTLY. Their house bread is phenomenal. It's served fresh and warm, with a hint of old bay seasoning. The butter is really tasty, I'm not sure if it was housemade. The best part, all our foods came really fast. But most importantly, I was really impressed by their service. Our server was REALLY nice and friendly. He knew just what we needed, was very accommodating, and made us feel very welcomed. Thanks to Groupon, we finally made it over here for dinner. We'd been planning on checking it out, especially since it's practically across the street from us, but we needed that extra incentive. Inside the decor was standard, old-school steakhouse, and it was definitely aging. It was nothing particularly notable. Lots of brown wood and cream. Simple, but not exactly elegant. The waiters were all men and all wore jackets. Again, very old-school steakhouse like. 3 stars. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. Our waiter then brought over our menus (and neglected to tell us the specials). The complimentary bread and crackers were delicious. Fabulous flavors and just the right amount of warmth. The wine list isn't extensive per se, but they've got just about everything you could want covered - including a good amount of wines by the glass. 3 stars. The food menu is, again, pretty standard, old-school steakhouse. Shrimp, crab, oysters, salad, and soup for appetizers. Steak, one chicken dish, and a couple of seafood dishes for entrees. And lots of different veggies or mac 'n' cheese for sides. We opted for a wedge salad and french onion soup for appetizers. Going for one of the seafood options probably would've been a better choice. The soup and salad were fine, but not exactly steakhouse good. Both were quite light on flavor and kinda boring. And neither was worth the cost. 3 stars. For entrees, we went with the filet mignon (medium) and the fish of the day, which was rainbow trout stuffed with crab. The filet mignon was big and thick. Probably one of the biggest filets I've ever had a restaurant. And so, for the price, that seemed great. It was nicely charred and cooked perfectly. It was plated with some onion strings. And it was quite good, but it lacked in extra flavor. A sauce or something would've made it perfect. 3.5 stars. The rainbow trout stuffed with crab was quite good. On its own, it would've been too dry, but with the stuffed crab, it was moist and flavorful. And the sauce over it was great too. 3.5 stars. We also opted for a side of the mac 'n' cheese. Our waiter definitely oversold the awesomeness of it. But it was delicious. It was cheesy and gooey with pancetta mixed in, which was a nice touch. And it had some crumbles baked on top. 4 stars. The service was attentive and it was an overall pleasant dining experience. But it was still overall just 3 stars. Not a bad place for a nice steak dinner. Was here for restaurant week with a large group for restaurant week. I ended up getting the soup of the day (potato leek,) got the filet (for an upcharge) and the cheesecake. Before that though I had a drink at the bar during lunch time, like I was a Washington fat cat and well, I suppose I should wait for the sun to go down when I order a cocktail at a bar. The soup was smooth and tasty with a little fried onion strips on top for texture. The filet was worth the 10 dollar upcharge, although the skirt steak actually looked pretty tasty. I asked the filet to be 'walked through a warm room' when they asked how well I wanted it cooked. Sure enough it came out blue, which made it the best. I had it with a glass of wine-sadly I don't remember which one because my friend ordered the bottles for the group but whatever it was it went well with it. What an experience! My son and I had a fantastic meal together, visiting from Canada. We started our evening with stellar service from a great waiter, Nelson. His energy and enthusiasm provided a great night for us. After hearing the specials, we decided on Calamari appetizers and the surf & turf (seen in the picture). Another satisfying culinary experience courtesy of my hubby. We went here for Valentine's Day, two days in advance. Not typically a Reuben fan, we decided to give them a try--for those who appreciate good Reuben, you will not be disappointed. For me, it was a nice experience I can check off my to-do list. The shrimp appetizer was more up my alley and I loved it. The fried calamari too was pretty good but, likely less flavorful than the alternative option, sweet chili calamari, would have been--choose your journey. The steak was delicious as were its accompaniments. As if either of us could fit anything else into our tummies, we decided on carrot cake to take home--post photo-op that is. I went to Bobby Van's last night and had a wonderful time! Our server Mike was very attentive and friendly and the manager Hector was also very warm and professional. We ordered the porterhouse for two (cooked medium rare), mac & cheese, hashbrowns and a baked potato,with all the fixings on the side. As a starter we also shared a Caesar salad. The food was all executed perfectly and the accompanying Manhattan's were delicious! As a special treat, we also received the flambé banana pudding complementary. I pains me to say this but Bobby Van's DC has gone down hill big time. The food wasn't good at all. Not a single thing ordered (4 meals/3 appetizers) was seasoned. No salt/pepper or anything to enhance the flavor. Maybe they cater to 65+ diners now? Steaks were definitely good cuts of meat but no seasoning ruined their potential to be great. The place was pretty much empty in a Thursday night as well which was also interesting. Maybe they never recovered after Covid? The interior is also run down with broken fixtures in the bathrooms and zero hot water. I let two faucets run and never got anything even remotely hot. They also had the water valves turned way down so not much flow at all. I can only assume it's because they're trying to save money on water? Staff was friendly enough by the food was a real disappointment. It saddens me to say I've made my last visit to Bobby Van's DC. Subpar service - waited approximately 15 mins for water and close to 30 to get our orders taken. We did the groupon deal and the prix fixe groupon menu available online does not match what was given to us in person. The menu available online had more food options and also came with a bottle of wine/champagne. My partner and I both had 2 drinks each, which plus tax came to be $88 which is essentially the price of the groupon ($90). Overall the food was just ok. I had shrimp cocktail which came with 4 shrimp and way more sauce than anyone could eat. My partner got a caesar salad which was very basic and overdressed. We both opted for the filet mignon, mine cooked rare and partner opted for medium rare. My filet was delicious, well seasoned and cooked to perfection. My partners filet was good but not as good as mine, it was not as well seasoned and the cook was off at times. As my side I ordered the brussel sprouts which come with bleu cheese and bacon, my partner ordered the mac and cheese which came with prosciutto. The brussels were fine, I found them to be too wet - opted to not finish or box the remainder as it would have become soggy. Partners mac and cheese was basically butter noodles with panko and tiny prosciutto slivers, definitely would not recommend that side to anyone. For dessert I had the chocolate mousse and partner had the cheesecake. I enjoyed the mousse however it was a bit too sweet/rich for me so I was not able to finish. Partner enjoyed the cheesecake quite well and would order it again. I wish it was possible to substitute the dessert as I would have opted for the creme brule. I arrived in the middle of a snowstorm with two suitcases in tow and the staff was gracious enough to store my luggage near the coat area. I was given a corner table, with a nice cushioned seat. If I had to knock anything, some of the waters' accents were a little hard to understand. However, they were always smiling and enthusiastic. They really seemed to enjoy working there. Then again, with the tips I'd make working there, I'd be smiling too. I started with the Harry's salad, which doesn't have any lettuce in it. It has chopped tomatoes and roasted peppers, with cold shrimp, green beans, and thick cut chopped bacon tossed in a red wine vinaigrette. The vegetables were very fresh and I could really chew the bacon, it wasn't overly crisp. I could really taste the vinegar, but the warm bread was a great way to mop the rest of it up. Onto the main event. I ordered the New York strip, cooked medium rare plus. It was cooked spot on: lightly charred on the outside, pink and juicy on the inside. I don't know the ounce portion, but I would guess around 16 ounces. It was a perfect size, cooked as well as I've had in a while. They served it on a bed of potato sticks which added a nice crunch as well as a side of greens, which I promptly discarded. I also ordered asparagus, and I got a huge portion of sauteed asparagus, enough for 2-3 servings. They were cooked well, but needed some salt and pepper. In terms of the menu, the only thing I'd like to see added are some German or Lyonnaise potatoes. For dessert, I simply got a scoop of cinnamon ice cram for two dollars. Not a bad deal at all. I'm pretty stunned at the mediocre reviews. I had an excellent experience and would look forward to returning, especially if the Groupon is still around. read more

Never again. It had to be one of the worst, if not the worst meal we've had especially for that price. The steak was mostly fat, side dishes were substandard, and even after seeing most of the food not eaten, the waiter didn't even ask. We didn't take any of it home. Still, nothing. Bobby Van's is not a "bad" steakhouse. But when you pay premium prices, you expect premium food. The restaurant doesn't deliver. DC has some incredible steakhouses, like Capital Grille, in which you pay a hefty price, but you talk for months about how amazing the food is. We felt dinner at Bobby Van's did not justify the cost. I will say that the French Onion Soup is probably the best I've ever eaten. There is a distinctive ingredient in the broth, that I was unable to identify, giving the broth a sweet, unique flavor. The bread, too, was delicious--warm, soft and very tasty. Shrimp Scampi was not like any I've ever had. It was good, but it really didn't seem like scampi as I've come to know it. Rather than being a garlicky butter wine sauce, this "scampi" sauce was creamy with bits of tomato. The husband wanted steak, but was a little annoyed that Bobby Van's doesn't list the ounces, as many steakhouses do. Fortunately, our server was very knowledgeable and able to list the size of every steak on the menu. (Speaking of the server, he was friendly and professional, but left us unattended for too-long periods at a time. The guy filling our water, however, was prompt and attentive.) The 16 oz ribeye ($54) was very tender, but lacked flavor. The bacon and bleu cheese Brussels sprouts, shredded not whole, were also rather bland. Drinks were $16, wine about $10. We had a discount, but even with it, the bill came to almost $170 (including tip, drinks and $40 paid for Groupon.) Wife and were visiting DC from California. I purchased a Groupon for a prefixed dinner. I had accidentally got the Groupon for the NY location, but they honored it. I had the shrimp cocktail and salmon which was moist and flaky, my wife the filet mignon that was cooked to perfection. The food was delicious and the service was attentive- our server, Apolinar took excellent care of us. Next time we visit we will ask for him. The cocktails were excellent and there's a decent selection of wines by the glass. On Saturdays currently, bottles of wine are half price. It was a delightful experience and worth full price. I've already been back 3 times for the roasted chicken it's just that delicious . We hosted a holiday lunch here, they had great prices and a really nice size room for a party of 30 people. We decided to book all of our holiday corporate events here from now on. read more

Burnt steak - twice I ordered a $65 rib eye steak medium cooked. It came obviously burnt. I tried eating it but it was so bitter I sent it back. The second steak came back burnt as well. The waiter never even came to see if everything was all right. Clearly the restaurant does not care. I just ate the second steak because I ran out of time. I could not taste any beef flavor. My Partner In Munch & I were not impressed with this location, felt like it was the Bobby Van's sports bar. The Old Fashioned, Crab Dip, Jerk Wings and Sliders.... The Old Fashioned: tasted like bourbon straight. No simple syrup, bitters, cherry or orange to be found. Crab Dip: great consistency, could see and taste crab lumps. Served with French bread and tortilla chips. Jerk Wings: did not taste jerk seasoning, regular chicken wing and was double fried. This restaurant is just okay to me. There isn't much on the menu and the food is mediocre to be so overpriced. The service and the staff are wonderful and very attentive. I just feel the food is overpriced. I appreciate the fact that they have a kids menu and they provide free dessert for birthdays. read more
