I have heard about this place from my daughter. After shopping this evening I decided to stop and get dinner for my husband and I. We live in federal way and out restaurant options are limited to fast food and big chain. I will most certainly make the 20 minute drive to Tacoma anytime I feel like BBQ. The food is awesome. I took my holiday Turkey over for them to smoke and it was amazing. I guess it's a service they offer during the holidays. It was so good I did it again on Christmas and It was the talk off the dinner. Every one was amazed at how good it was. "Sub-par customer service, dirty interior, non-daily operating grill-pit which lends to the blaze'blah of the operation. Pit is located outside of the front door on the side of the street so why are the interior walls so dirty as if the pit is indoors (?) filled with outdated event flyers and "out-of-business" business cards? On top of it all; the prices rival that of a 4 star restaurant that offers "ambiance" and a server making this place a total mismatch for what you get versus the menu prices. BBQ is only BBQ if it's Qued the day of service. Refrigerated left-overs charged at full menu prices warmed up in a microwave is somewhat of a joke. The food was EXCELLENT!! Since the prices were very reasonable we decided to order a little extra to take home for tomorrow's lunch. My husband who is from Kansas City did not stop to talk, only to lick his fingers until ALL of his was gone! Besides the wonderful flavors of the food, the whole place was spotless (not even that sticky feel that you always have when BBQ is involved!) Everyone was incredibly courteous and to discover that we met 3 of the 4 generations of owners within our visit is truly mind blowing. The sauce is the same recipe that was created in 1948 and has been made since. Don't even get me started on the homemade peach cobbler! I love Bob's. They have the best no-frills authentic southern barbeque that I've found in the Puget Sound area. The family who runs it are very sweet. The service is sometimes slow. The physical space is a bit drab and hasn't been updated in 15 years. If you come in at lunch time, they'll probably have bad daytime TV going in the dining area. As far as I'm concerned, that just lends to the charm of the place. If you're looking for authentic southern barbeque, and people that will remember your name and take a genuine interest in seeing that you enjoy your meal, this is the place. read more

Great service, great food, and a wonderful atmosphere. Upon realizing that they didnt have change for a 20.00 when i ordered a side of baked beans, they told me to put away my credit card and said that my smile was payment enough. After eating the chef came out and thanked our group of eating and hoped to see us again soon. The angel who takes the orders may take a couple times to hear you correctly but her warm attitude and smile more than makes up for it. I cant beleive some of the horrible reviews given, i understand that you can be a little upset that they weren't open on a day they were suppose to, but that in no way effects the quality of bbq they serve. Another bad review on this site complains that jerry springer on the tv made them uncomfortable. I just can't beleive a one-star review would be given over issues like these. I honestly dont remember what was on TV because i literally could not put down the delicious ribs i was given. If you live in tacoma, and you even like BBQ just a lil, go check this place out. It's extremely affordable (7.99 for a half lb of ribs), i have been greeted with a warm smile and a friendly comment from the entire staff. Didn't even know this place existed. The owner is the son of a friend, who's father started the business years ago. It was totally worth the trip to hilltop. Ribs were fabulous, tips just as good, greens were on point and so was the Mac n cheese! To top my meal off I even indulged in some yummy peach cobbler. read more

When it comes to BBQ ribs, let me say that I am very tired of the fat, greasy, phoney-smoke tasting ribs at the chain restaurants. The ribs at Bob's are much more lean but still very moist and tasty and you can sometimes catch JC grilling on his giant grill parked in front so you can be certain the smoke doesn't come from a bottle. I really like the sauce, opting for the hot stuff instead of the mild or medium versions. The sides are also excellent but I prefer the beans and greens, sinning occasionally and having the mac & cheese. The chicken and rib tips are also very good but I have never tried the other choices so I won't comment. If you, too are tired of the fat and grease at the other rib joints, you really need to try Bob's. read more

I cant believe this place is getting such bad reviews. I stinkin love it at Bobs, their sauce is absolutely amazing and i make sure to pick up an extra bottle whenever im in town to take home and put on just about everything i cook. I guess it comes down to rib preference for people, all i know is everything ive ordered at Bobs has been delicious and the staff made an effort of coming out and personally making sure i was enjoying my food. read more

We have lived in Tacoma for a long time and I have always wanted to stop in here, but there was always a reason why I couldn't. Well the smoker was going again tonight and I pulled a u turn just to get back to it. The owners couldn't have been nicer and the FOOD was flippin awesome! Being a huge rib lover, I just had to order the rib dinner with sides. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone good and the spicy sauce was just perfect. The greens were on point and the smoky sweet beans were a plus. Yes, the place is a mom and pop local place. Yes, it is not the latest decor. But I was here for barbeque, not ambiance. The young man behind the counter stepped out to baste his bbq meat, and when he lifted the lid on the smoker, I was there. The bark on the brisket was AMAZING and noticing our interest, he was kind enough to cut us a piece to taste. SO moist, such great smoke and flavor. I know what we're ordering next time! this is some very good bar-b-q especially for the north west. i come from New Orleans were bar-b-q isn't exactly a main food group but everybody will occasionally have some. Not only is the bar-b-q good but so are some of the employees. Kay littles is the Owner of bob's and she does a wonderful job making sure that the bar-b-q is cooked to perfection. then there is a funny teen who occasionally takes orders. Although his comedy is pushing the envelope he stills does a good job of making the customer happy. Fridays is the best day to get the bar-b-q because that is when they usually grill and all of the bar-b-q has that "fresh off the grill" taste. Bob's is the best bar-b-q that i have had in a while. i give it five stars becuase their bar-b-q is as good as it gets in the North West. read more

We've been here twice now for take-out, and we will be back! Authentic, honest, and just plain good food. My favorite are the rib tips--sauced generously but not too vinegary. There is a bit of heat in the back of the throat, but even I (not big on spice) could handle it. Tender, and I could eat them all day. Service is friendly and great. But you have to look for them...blink and you've passed. It's worth going back for, though. I look forward to trying one of their "samiches"! I've been craving rib tips since we returned from Southern CA to live in our hometown, and I finally have that craving satisfied at Bob's.
