After seeing Wicked at the AMC Norwalk, we stopped by Bob's Big Boy Broiler in Downey. Compared to the Toluca Lake location, this one was pretty empty--no wait for a table on a Friday night after Thanksgiving. We all went for the Big Boy Combo, which includes a burger, salad with blue cheese dressing, and flaky onion rings (instead of fries)--exactly what you'd expect from Bob's. The hot fudge cake, of course, stole the show. The restaurant was nostalgically decorated for the holidays, with the iconic drive-in exterior, beautiful neon signs, and a new Bob's Big Boy statue. The audacity for them to charge almost 80 dollars for below mid ass food and slow ass service. We waited 15 to 20 minutes to get seated to have our order taken because supposely they were waiting for a waiter to come in so they did not have enough people to man each area. Mind you for a lunch rush, it wasn't busy. The food took another 15 minutes and it was honestly pretty disappointing. Burnt chicken tenders and a buffalo chicken sandwich that had soggy bread and old ass wilted lettuce. We work really hard for our money and to just throw it away like this is frustrating. We came on a rainy Sunday morning and there was no wait. That should have been enough of a reason to be concerned. I think there main business comes from people who are interested in the old diner style building not the food. I doubt the locals are flocking to Bob's Broiler. If I'm wrong, my apologies. I'm not trying to bash this place but I hope the powers to be read this and step it up. Now, let's get into it. We sat at a booth next to the window, great spot to sit. The table had a dusty film on it but the gal who sat us took care of it right away. When our coffee arrived the spoons they gave us were wet, with dirty Grey water on the spoon part. My cup had lipstick on the rim. Our waitress fixed the issue right away and was apologetic. The coffee was only a little more than warm, not real hot like it should be and I drink it black. I'm a former Marine and I've had some terrible food experiences so a dirty cup, some dirty water on a spoon and cold coffee, isn't enough to ruin my breakfast, but I was beginning to get concerned. Soon after we ordered a small plate with a tiny cup of warm syrup and 2 whipped butter packets were placed on our table. I never saw this before but I figured their concerned with portion control or something. By time my pancakes arrived, the syrup was cold, oh well. I could go on about how the sausage patties were more like bologna and burnt on one side. Also how my plate had dried food on it but I won't, because I saw what the problem was. Right after we were seated I saw a man behind the counter who appeared to me to be the owner. He was wearing a burgundy sweat shirt and Grey sweat pants. He was walking around and just kinda looking around and doing owner stuff. After we received our food he was walking around the eating area and talking to customers. When he walked past our table, that's when I figured out what the problem was. His clothes were dirty. His sweat shirt had hair on it and looked like it had not been washed in a while. His Grey sweat pants were even worse. Hopefully your experience with Bob's will be better and the guy in the sweats will read this and step it up. Our waitress was amazing and very pleasant. The pancakes were some of the best I ever had even though the butter packets were a disappointment. Those pancakes deserve better treatment than that. Let me start telling, First I walked in waited, not greeted I was ignored, two I asked if I can be seated they said yes, 3 no came to my table. I waited about 4 min. The I asked 2 lady's behind the counter just talking and they both saw me no bother to ask if I needed something , I had to ask for the menu.. sure one them said she said they all are busy in the other side, I said I was about to walk out, I ordered my food. Bob's Big Boy - a childhood favorite. This is one of remaining three Southern CalIfornia locations. I usually get the Big Boy combo that includes French fries and a salad. The salad dressing is still sold at Vons and Costco! I wanted the Pappi Parker's fried chicken but its not on the menu. The four patties were moist, meaty and juicy. Simply delicious. The bleu cheese salad dressing has always been a favorite. Too bad I didn't have room for the hot fudge ice cream cake! Service was top notch. Quick and friendly. I live near by and just tried it for the first time. I got a mushroom, Swiss burger which was very delicious! I think it was about $15 and just came with fries. I also tried a shake, I always thought they would be good, they are not good at all. I rather go to McDonald's for a McFlurry or jack in the box for a milkshake. This one was not creamy and the taste was hust off. I would not get one again, but I would comeback for a burger. Customer service was good. Employees were very friendly. DISCRIMINATION AND SNOBBERY AT BOB'S BIG BOY IN DOWNEY 20+ MINUTES OF STANDING IGNORED AT THE COUNTER: I WASN'T WORTHY OF HER TIME SO SHE MADE THE BUSBOY TAKE MY ORDER!!!! I walked into the Bob's Big Boy in Downey at 11 am on Wednesday, May 14. I approached the counter to look at the menu since I wanted to buy about 3 combos, so I could have the food for the next couple of days. A couple of older female employees walked in and out of the area behind the counter but did not look at me, they seemed a bit busy but I didn't see anyone in the limited view I had of the entire restaurant. But I saw only 2 parties in the booths, so it was practically empty-an older man was seated at the counter nearby while I stood against the counter perusing the menu. A young female employee, heavy black eyeliner, light skin, dark hair worn up, slender, and about 5"7, looked over at me twice, but she did not say anything to me. More than anything else, she looked unhappy at my presence; stern and unwelcoming is how I interpreted her facial expressions towards me. I looked at the menu and after about 10 to 13 minutes-I took my time as no one had acknowledged my presence and I was not in a rush-I decided to get 3 Big Boy combos. I hadn't had this meal in years and I was looking forward to having one there, maybe, but definitely having most of the food for the rest of the week. The unfriendly young woman looked at me again but looked away tight-mouthed and cold, as I closed the menu. I thought, "okay, she'll be over soon." Again, this was about 15 minutes after I arrived. But I knew I wasn't getting served when I looked over to see this same inhospitable woman rushing with menus and eliciting a warm verbal greeting to 3 people who were near a table inside the store and in the process of sitting down (it was a booth near the parking lot entrance, the entrance farther from the street). After close to 10 more minutes, I was getting irritated. In standing there, I felt I was being treated as though I was part of the decor-she looked at me two more times and both times I raised my left arm as if I was saying "don't you see me here?" But she still didn't say anything to me or change the dour look upon her face. At this point, I saw an older man, an employee who I believe is a busboy, who was walking with a marked limp-which I state for identification purposes and the hardships she induced him to endure-go into the area near the cash register/soft drink fountain behind the counter. The woman looked at me again. I looked at her again with a look that could be interpreted as my saying "what's going on here?" She called over the much older busboy and loudly said to him, "Go see what that guy wants!" He finally made it over, and I said, "What's going on here, everyone's getting served here but me." He ignored my question. In a very heavy accent he seemed to only be able to say, "Do you want something to drink?" I said, "No, how come no one wants to serve me, what is this? ( more silence)...look, I want to order a Big Boy combo to go." Again he posed, "Do you want something to drink?" I said, "No, just the food. To go." By now I'd lost my desire for Bob's Big Boy and my entire appetite too actually. He walked back to the unfriendly young woman. I watched her from afar as she was keying in my order and a feeling of disgust came over me. This young woman too self important-and prejudiced-to take down my order, made the poor older busboy do it, because she did not want to interact with me. Is it because I'm darker than her? I thought, what am I doing here with these unprofessional, terrible people...I'm not spending ANY money here. If they treat me this horribly--a top-20 university grad, 2-branch US veteran, and someone who is both friends and works with professional baseball players--it follows that their food service skills, food preparation, and on the job integrity is just as poor, just as absent and just as derelict. I was always wanting to try this Bob's Big Boy Broiler, as it's so hard to find the remaining few. The food is as I remembered from my childhood and was filling. My food took a tad longer to prepare, as the hamburger is probably a tad early for breakfast. However, the ambiance and atmosphere was titally a throw back from the early days, excep there were no car hops to take orders at this iconic location. I asked for a veggie omelette that i always get and they made me a complete different dish Without hashbrowns. I called and they said "too bad" that they discontinued the veggie omelette and that they can't do anything about it! Will never go back! Super tasty food! Today my family celebrated my great aunt's birthday. My uncle drove her up in his classic Chrysler. He was sooooo excited to park it right in front of the Bob statue. The restaurant welcomed us, nicely. It was clean and well kept. There were 11 of us and our waiter was really good with us. My family is polite, so we got through ordering and coffee and helping the waiter pretty well, and the waiter was really great at making sure everything was ok and coffees were always filled. The coffee flavor is less than ok. It tastes more like water with a hint of coffee essence (coffee could be much better quality). We all really liked our food though. I ordered a lumberjack potato dish and the flavors were rich. I also had a strawberry waffle. The strawberries are freshly diced. The waffle was tasty with butter, syrup and strawberry. My uncle ordered a huge, bone-in ham steak that was very good. Yes! What else............not much really. It's a great spot and I appreciate that the place is kept clean. Came here on a Thursday night and there was absolutely no wait! We sat by the bar area since it was empty. The places is really cute since it has that old school diner vibe to it. The staff were great and attentive, we ordered right away and received our food quickly as well. We were surprised that both our meals came with salad or soup. I ordered a medium rare steak which was cooked just as I asked, it was seasoned well. The vegetables were delicious. We love having to drive to Downey because there is a Bob's Big Boy there, and there are so few left in Southern California. It is always great. They make the best burgers, 2 burgers with a bun in between, topped with whatever you want. They are always made to order and they are just so wonderful. They have a full menu and you can get all of your meals there and everything is good. It is an old time diner, this one is very large. The food is just so good. They have a chili pasta dish, that my grandson goes nuts for. It comes with garlic bread and a side. They have dinner items that are all tasty. Their breakfast is excellent. We love their pancakes. This Bob's is just spotless, all the time. I see at least one person cleaning the entire time we are there. The place is big and older, but they really keep on it. The kitchen is super clean as well and the bathrooms are well maintained. The service is so friendly. They get to you straight away and are so helpful. The last time we were there we were the only ones there. So, go and give them a try. They need the business. This Pandemic has really hurt them and it is a large place so expensive to keep up.
