In doing my yelp research prior to an extended stay in NoVA for business, Bombay Cafe popped up as a place I might want to check out. Once I arrived and got settled, I realized how close it was to my hotel and paid a visit. Overall, it was a decent experience. The variety of offerings was good, and everything I tried tasted good. The restaurant itself is a little strange in that it is in a strip mall (although to be honest EVERTHING seems to be in a strip mall around here) and the atmosphere is pretty blah. It almost comes of like a Cici's Pizza or something aside from the Bollywood mural on the wall. Standout dishes were the butter chicken and saag chicken. The tandoori chicken seemed to be glazed with some kind of sweet sauce which wasn't bad, but unusual in my experience. The naan was hard to come by because once a fresh pan was put out it would be snapped up in a feeding frenzy. The few pieces that I got were ok, but not as moist as I prefer. I would not recommend coming to this restaurant. The food is below average, and almost everything is pre-made. When I asked to take peanuts out of the different bhel puri, they couldn't because it was already made. Also, the tables are not very clean and or not cleared often, such as after customers leave. I was out this way to go to some of the Indian grocery stores in the area, so we stopped in for an early dinner. On the weekends, the buffet is $8.99 ($8 if you pay in cash). For $1 you can add a fountain soda. They also have assorted sodas and juices (including guava and lychee--two of my favorites!). Just a head's up that you need to spend $10 in order to use a credit card to pay. They had several vegetarian options for us to try (saag with mushrooms,dal, bhindi masala, potato curry, etc), plus maybe four entrees with meat in them, and some delicious pakoras and samosas. The bhindi masala was by far our favorite. I'll go back just to have this again! The cost included kheer, but they also have a self-serve pay-by-the-pound refrigerated section of Indian treats that is separate from the buffet price. Since they weren't labeled, I have no idea what any of them were. We chose simply based on colors and having a variety. Some of the milk fudge-type items were great, others were not so hot. If tou are going order biryani just order white rice, chilli powder, salt and raw chicken pices separately. You can mix according to your taste. Went in looking for some good chaat last week. Bhel Puri falls short of flavor, it was salty and ingredients tasted they were taken out of grocery packets. The dhahi puri was little better but for the price these could have been better. Their Samosas are supposedly very good and so I may try samosa chaat next time. Popped by to give them a try. The food was good and certainly a nice selection to choose from. Every few minutes someone from the kitchen came out to restock the food bins so there was never any down time. Lots of customers in the restaurant. The buffet was only $8 and a drink $1. I thought it was a great value under ten bucks. Only a couple of slight negatives to mention; when you are finished with your plate they want you to carry them to the back of the restaurant and place them in bins for pickup, I spotted a few pieces of food still remaining on their clean dish stacks - two separate dishes to be exact, and their soda fountain dispenses too much carbonation for Coke - that could be easily adjusted. read more

This is THE BEST Indian food in Northern VA. Great place to pick up some food and take it home or eat there. I always get a platter which is an amazing price (under $10) which comes with two choices of a dish and a side of white jasmine rice, naan, and a sweet little dessert. I usually get the paneer in tiki masala sauce or the butter chicken. Amazing! Defintely recommend this authetic restaurant because the food is incredible and the atmosphere pulls you into the Indian culture with its smells, dessert racks and more. Bombay Cafe catered 4 events for us in 3 days, and each one had a variety of options. No menu was a repeat, therefore no one got bored eating the same food. They created the menu for us and we trusted them to do so. We were impressed beyond expectations. They delivered professionally every time.They coordinated with venues and brought in whatever the venue didn't have. They provided their own staff, setup ahead of schedule, and provided excellent service. BC I can't tell you exactly what we had, since I didn't eat much. But everyone around me gave their compliments to me, (which I'm now passing on here). I had friends out of town who said Bombay Cafe had the best daal they've ever had. I do remember having their lamb chops (which I had a few of), and that's all I remember eating. I did have a bite of the ras malai, which I looked forward to finishing. GREAT food, great service. I've been attending this place for 7+ years & have always had great customer service & excellent food. My favorites are the Butter Chicken, Chicken Biryani, Goat Biryani & Chicken Keema. I work less than a mile from the restaurant & every time I order lunch to pick up, they pleasantly took my order over the phone & it's ready to go when I arrived. Every time I've gone into the restaurant itself, I've had nothing but pleasant customer service from a variety of their workers both male & female. The best thing is they're open until 1:00am.. As an Indian, I can say that Bombay Cafe is one of the best, and most affordable Indian restaurants in the area. A group of friends and I dined in on a Thursday evening for a friend who had never eaten Indian food before! Since we were a large group, we wanted to do family style, which was not really an option, but the gentleman working allowed us to buy the to-go size containers and eat in (thank you!) We ordered a lot - butter chicken, chaana (chickpeas), palak (spinach with corn), dahi puri, and of course, rice, naan and desserts. Everything was absolutely scrumptious - we devoured it all and even went back for more! The 7 of us probably spent no more than $10 each, and were full by the end. Service is filled with a bunch of literal imbeciles. I wanted a beer and I present to them my card. They have trouble of finding a date of birth on the VA license. I've pointed to where it literally says "Date of birth" on the freaking card and they still say "I don't see it"! That happened on my first visit. The second visit (yesterday), they told me they could not serve me alcohol because they have to follow their "rules" which they think means they cannot serve alcohol to anyone born in the year 1996. COMPLETE DUMB*SSES!! 1) IT IS BEFORE OR ON TODAY'S DATE (4/22/2018). 2) THEY STILL HAVE THEIR STICKER FOR 1996. THE UPDATE SHOULD NOW BE 1997 AND THEY ARE NOT FOLLOWING ALONG WITH ACTUAL STATE LAW. We have been in Bombay Cafe several times and have great memories. Today we were shocked at the attitude and lack of sense of service at the Cafe. The buffet has been replaced by Thali, which has a fixed quantity of rice, a nan, and two vegetables/dal of your choice, with one piece of sweet like a gulab jamun. The dal/vegetable is in no way sufficient for the rice/nan, and if we need more of this we have to pay $3.15 for each plate of vegetable. This was very inconvenient, and I felt cheated. No way we are going there again. I would not want to eat so much rice or nan, which was forced but would want more vegetables, or dal. This is very mean short sighted on part of management. the restaurant appears ok for carry out, but not for eating in. read more

Place is normally busy and not too bad to hangout at night. The food use was never good but use to be edible an year ago but as of now it is awefull. i would eat here instead of every other place around the area with the name kabob in it. There are a lot of them and not a single on knows or choses not to make a kabob. The veggie dishes here can be eaten and you may even find a little flavor in them. I really don't know what to say about their meat dishes; I can't tell what kind of meat it is or it was seasoned and cooked or thrown on to spices and put out.
