I went for my first time today. I was warmly greeted and the staff were very friendly. Right now they are only doing take out, which is fine by me. I ordered the Matter Paneer, and the curry was seasoned absolutely beautiful. Such a great balance of flavors, I think which represents a true mastery of this style of cooking. I am quite disappointed with eating here. Mind you, the food is not bad, but for one person to eat here cost me $30! Everything is ala carte. They charge for nan and rice! Their tea is $3.99! I had the chicken tikka which was okay. The chicken was a bit on the dry side. Like it had been cooked earlier and was sitting around. There was no one else eating at the place on a Saturday night. Bombay Cafe is a surprising little gem of Indian food, and in of all places, North County San Diego, in sleepy little Vista! The restaurant is family run and has been here for 17 or 18 years. The owners are from Punjab, so the style is northern Indian. They have a full dinner menu and a special lunch menu. The husband is the cook, seen through a glass window into the kitchen, and the wife works the front room tables. All dishes can be selected in spiciness on a scale from 1 - 10. We went for 5 and that was about right. We came here for lunch and were pleasantly surprised! The decor was very elegant for a small place, with table clothes and cloth napkins, and tasteful wall hangings. The lunch menu was a choice of 3 combos. The veggie combo was $9.99, the Chicken Korma Combo was $10.99, and the Chicken Korma and Tandoori Chicken combo was $10.99. These were served in stainless platters with 2 large pieces of Naan bread, a large portion of basmati rice and Dal lentils. The food had excellent flavors, were spiced as expected, had great texture, and was very filling! We had Indian tea and Mango Lassi drink, which were both very nice. I give the food 4 stars the flavor and the taste of the food is excellent. Each time I eat here, the only thing that I ever found dissatisfying was the Mango Lassi. It tastes bitter and spoiled. I have had the samosas ($3.50each) they are large,Garlic Naan ($3.50 3 pieces) you can really taste it, coconut naan ($3.99)my favorite, gulab jammun ($3.50) its really sweet, the special chicken jal frazie ($11.99) recommended, chicken tikka masala $13.99 the sauce is delicious, vegetable biryani $11.99 the best rice restaurant i have tasted, actually the rest of the menu is good. This is the pricing for the al carte menu ; Tandoori cusine $11.99-21.99, chicken/lamb/vegetable curry $10.99-13.99,Samundari seafood $16.99 & appetizers are $3.50-9.99. The rice, bread, condiments, and drinks are a not included. They do have dinner specials on their menu $17.99 vegetarian and $22.99 carnivore per person which come with sides & appetizers.I think this is expensive pricing for this part of Vista but I guess you are paying for the quality. Why then the 3 star rating? When I first tried to order by phone using their online menu which is posted in Yelp & linked to their site and other sites, the Lady (owner?) told me that it was a fake menu posted up by a competitor from LA who hated them and wanted to hurt their business by putting up a fake menu that had cheaper prices than they charged. She said they tried to remove it but couldn't. Instead of trying to help me order she told me to come by and take a look at the real menu rushing to get off the phone. Later I got their real online menu from www.menupix.com . She could have referred me to it because it was on their business card in the restaurant but she didn't. If you are flexible with your time and plan on having a long sit down meal of a few hours then their slow service will not bother you at all. It seems like a 2 person show so it takes awhile for them to cook and serve even if the restaurant is not full (ex.only 2 tables are occupied 5 patrons). Even their take out service is slow. Ex. they told me 10-15 minutes so I gave them 20 minutes, when I got there I had to wait 25 more minutes because the lady said they do not cook the food until you come because they want to serve it fresh. That is great but isn't the point of ordering to go, to pick up and go, not sit down and wait?? I then asked if I could change one of my orders if it wasn't cooked yet she said NO because the cook already made it?? By this time I was tired and hungry and just wanted to go home. Their restaurant is dingy,dreary, and dark even in the day time. Also and I feel awkward for writing this up but each time I have been to the restaurant I feel like I am a stranger who just intruded into someones living room while they are sitting down for their meal. I say this because the owner's children are walking around with no shoes, pajamas on, hanging around with grandma just staring at you. Other times they are sleeping in the corner fully laid out with a pillow and blanket. There is nothing wrong with any of this I understand it is a Mom&Pop shop, the type of business I like to support. My wife and I were in the mood for Indian food and decided to try BomBay Café. The restaurant is a little hard to find since the shopping center is not well lit at night. It's right behind the O'Reilly Auto store next to Upper Crust Pizza. Bombay is a little dark and not the most up to dated looking restaurant but the service is very friendly. It's definitely a Mom & Pops place for sure. You can't go wrong with any dishes, such as the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, and any of the fish dishes are good. They make their entire dishes hot & spicy open to request for their customers. I always order our items at a level 7 but if you don't like a super-hot & spicy food, keep it to 2 or 3 level until your get the level you like. The prices are similar to other Indian restaurants, but they do charge extra for rice. They close at 9pm so come early. You will always be greeted with a friendly smile and feel welcome when coming to Bombay Cafe. Enjoy!!! read more

This is honestly my favorite restaurant in San Diego County. The food is fantastic and the family that runs/owns it are even better. It's very lowkey but lowkey places always seem to be the best. This has got to be the best Indian food I've ever had. The naan was incredible. Even the chutneys were superb. Prices were reasonable for portion sizes and we came home with leftovers. (We had garlic naan, samosas, lamb Bhuna and lamb Saag and a liter of House red wine). The experience was like eating in a family's dining room. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Recently moved to Vista and was excited to try the Indian offerings. As we're from the UK we had high expectations and they were definitely met and surpassed! The homestyle family atmosphere was great and the service was very friendly - I assumed we were served by the female owner who was very attentive. Chose the chicken pakoras, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Korma, rice and Coconut naan. All were fantastic and we will definitely be back and bringing friends and family from the U.K. as well as locals. Indian food in North County can be hit and miss but this place is #1! The manager said they'd be open since 1989 so hopefully lots more years left! read more

2 1/2 stars-My husband and I really hoped this place would be enjoyable. There was only one other occupied table in the restaurant. I ordered the tandoori chicken and he ordered the chicken tikka masala. FYI, everything is a la carte meaning that rice or naan doesn't come with the entree. The tandoori chicken arrived at the table piping hot and steamy. Very excited to dig in. I take a bite and it tastes quite sour. The entree had a heavy lemon flavor which I'm not accustomed to nor do I think I like. His chicken tikka masala was too sweet and very different from what we are used to. We really want to like this place but doubt we will be returning. I guess we will be making the trek to Punjabi Tandoor in Carlsbad. read more

If I could only use one word, it would be ineptitude. Three screw ups in one order: 1. Had to wait over 20 minutes after showing up to pick up my order because they gave some of my order to another customer; 2. To make up for the delay they included a couple pieces of gulab jamun. The good will went away as soon as the container, which was not properly sealed, caused syrup to leak all over the other items (that i actually ordered) and into my car. 3. Got home to see that they didn't include the rice that I ordered and paid for. Shame on me for assuming they could get any of this right. We ate here for my husband's birthday and we had an amazing experience! The restaurant itself is beautiful and cozy. We were sat in a comfortable booth made cozier by little Indian pillows, overlooking a fireplace. The staff was very attentive and kind. They made us feel very welcome and taken care of. Way too SWEET :(. We ordered 4 dishes including Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh... they were ALL sweet. I told the waitress I don't like any sweet curry. I think they are just unaware of how to make any curry that isn't sweet. We didn't send the food back because they were obviously a struggling business and the place was empty. I felt sick shortly afterwards due to the sweetness. Sad because we wanted to find an Indian place near us. Won't go back... I just think sweet curries are their style. read more
