Stopped in for lunch and ordered the lunch special (10 boneless wings) half/half on the regular and spicy sauce. Came with a side as well (I chose steamed rice). Also had the potsticker appetizer. The chicken seemed like it had been sitting in a warmer for a while--not fresh. Both the sauces were good, but they didn't make the chicken less dry. The steamed rice was hot and fresh. The potsticker appetizer came after the meal was served and also seemed like it may have come from a warmer, not made fresh. We got half of them spicy-the sauce was good, but probably overpowered the flavor of the potsticker. Overall it was just ok, and the prices seemed a bit steep for the quality. I went here during their 2 for $20 lunch special with a friend. For the price you do get a small batch of chicken what ever flavor you got (we picked the soy garlic) and a choice of an entree (we chose tteokbokki), and also a side of their kimchi. The food came out pretty fast, and the first bite into the chicken was phenomenal! The skin was crunchy and you can definitely taste that soy garlic. The tteokbokki was a bit spicy but bearable but also very delicious. Kimchi wasn't too spicy but still that signature kimchi taste to it. Overall for $20, it was definitely worth it. The reason why I gave this 3 stars is because of the pricing of the food during non-lunch special hours is a lot! I don't know if I can see myself coming here during their regular hours. read more

How can you go wrong with some good old Korean wings?? The wings were nice, light and crispy and the sauces were glazed on with the perfect amount. I got the pickled radish side and also rice, which was cooked to my liking. Customer service was polite and the food did not take too long to come out. It was my first time here and the food was pretty good! I was here last night and there was other people here too so it wasn't very busy. Our food came out in around 15 minutes, so the wait wasn't that bad. We got the fried chicken, tteokbuki, salmon avocado ball, takoyaki, shumai, popcorn shrimp, Bulgogi, and chicken Katsu! I came here for the kfc. Came in on a Thursday night at 7, got seated at 8:30, food came out at 9, they closed at 10, had a party of 7. Although I did try some other dishes that my friends ordered. It wasn't that great but I left it out of this review because I only tried a spoonful. If you want other authentic Korean food, I wouldn't suggest this place. For the kfc; We ordered half classic wings and drums. They only have two sauces so we tried both (soy garlic and spicy). The chicken was cooked perfectly, it's tender and sort of falls off the bone. It's not as crispy or crunchy as you would think. The spicy level on this is hotter then popeyes or KFC, so be aware if you can't handle spicy. The spicy did kick my ass the next morning... The soy garlic is good and not all that salty, more soy then garlic. Overall I can only eat a handful of this KFC, like 6 pieces each sauce. I'm an avid chicken wing eater and I've tried it all like wing stop, bww, popeyes, kfc, slims, JJs etc. I gave it 3 stars because the chicken was ok and the service sucks. Waiter forgot some of our orders. They did try to be nice about it. The place is also very small and cramp, avoid groups of more then 4 otherwise you'll wait forever for a seat. I feel like some of these other reviewers never had fried chicken before. If fried chicken is new to you, this might be a great place. Move over, Revival. There's a new sheriff in town, and it's Korean fried chicken. Double fried for extra crispiness, and sauce to give extra oomph and flavor to the crispy and moist mouthfeel that's already there. This has origins, apparently, from the Korean War, influences from American culture, like spam soondobu. It's another take on the same old boring fried chicken and the standard sauces that you'd see at BW3 or whatever American chains you'd see in the States. It's probably one of the true Asian fusion cuisines around that's worth trying out, though I hear that Korean tacos on the West coast are bomb, but that's for another time. That said, order the Korean dishes, not the Chinese/Taiwanese dishes. That's what you're here for, right? Anyway, the line was out of the door with a wait time of 45 minutes when I arrived. All the dishes were tempting. I ordered the bulgolgi Korean tacos and the fried chicken (half spicy, half soy/garlic sauce that comes in both wing sections and drumsticks). The bulgolgi Korean tacos come with bulgolgi with slaw, topped with a variation of spicy sauce, all on a tortilla. The bulgolgi didn't have much sauce or flavor, and of got drowned by the more neutral slaw and the sauce up top. All in all, the bulgolgi is just kind of isn't there other than there's just some beef. Given how this went, I think the chicken Korean tacos is the way to go, and I'll have to give those a go next time. As for the fried chicken, "crispy" doesn't do the chicken justice. It's almost teeth-shatteringly crispy when it comes out. There's plenty of batter covering the chicken, and the soy/garlic sauce is indeed garlicky and adds a bit of sweet umami to the chicken. The spicy sauce has a little bit of kick that builds after eating more and more chicken, and the hot chicken really takes up the spice another notch. A little vinegary with the heat, but nothing to hard to handle that a little sweating can help with. As for the wings vs drumsticks, both are moist, but given the amount of batter to meat ratio, I prefer the drumsticks, as there is quite a bit of batter that is on the wings, that it kind of overwhelms the chicken, and the ratio just doesn't feel right. Additionally, I feel that the chicken could use more sauce--a lot more. Both the spicy and soy/garlic side. The flavor is there, but the sauce is brushed on... just enough for the flavor to come through. More sauce (and perhaps a little more dilute) would to really make the chicken spectacular and would help balance out the greasiness of the chicken coming out of the fryer. The pickled radish that I choose to go with the chicken is refreshing and also helps a little cutting down the greasy effects from the chicken. Unfortunately, I've been spoiled with the Korean fried chicken standard that is Crisp in Chicago. That said, this place serves up some pretty solid chicken (4/5), but the taco puts the overall meal at a 3.5/5, and I'm rounding up to give them the benefit of the doubt, since they're still figuring out logistics and getting their groove going. There's been quite a bit of hype on this chain coming to Minneapolis, and they just opened and are in their first week. There are things that still need working out. In talking with the servers, they're short-staffed. That's why there's a "Hiring" sign slapped on the front window, guys. Be patient, enjoy the chicken. Screw those people complaining of poor service, you're complaining that Bonchon was taking forever to open. You're here for their fried chicken. Not their service. Chicken this crispy takes time to be made to your order. You can go to Revival for service if you want that instead. I can definitely see myself coming back to see how they are after they get things settled out. I hope they are successful and stick around and keep the Asian clientele. There doesn't seem to be any other Korean fried chicken places in town after Rabbit Hole closed (and I just missed them, sadly). TL;DR: get the fried chicken. Drumsticks are the recommended meat, unless you want a ton of crunch to meat ratio with your chicken (then get the wings). Spicy and soy/garlic are good to order. Spicy is not that spicy. Soy/garlic if you're a sissy. Needs more sauce, but the chicken is still pretty darned good. read more

Had my first Bonchon experience tonight and it was underwhelming. I've been to Bonchon in New York so I was very excited to see one open in Minnesota! So straight to the point, the wings were good. Breading was nice and crunchy and the flavor was on point, I personally think the soy garlic is the better one out of the two options (other option being spicy). The other entrees however, are a hard pass. Kimchi fried rice and bul dakk weren't very memorable dishes and were too sweet and too much onions, not enough meat. Now on to the service...I'm usually not picky with service as someone who's worked in the food industry for many years and I understand they just opened and that service might have some kinks but it was almost like they purposely wanted to be bad. 40 minutes just to print a check and bring a Togo box? No no no. (It wasn't super busy at that point either). There was one worker who did a good job refilling our water though. (We had different servers helping our table) Bonchon is probably a better choice for takeout rather than dine in, as the place is really small and cramped. This place is phenomenal ! I was totally unsure what I was gonna be expecting as I have never been into a Bon Chon before. As soon as I walked in Charlie greeted me and gave me great customer service. He went over the menu and his favorites to eat. He also was dressed very professionally. I could tell he had to be the manager on duty. I ended up getting the spicy garlic wings with fried rice. The food came out quickly and hot. Oh boy the best chicken I have had in a long time. I've heard that this place is pretty pricy but their food is good. My girlfriend and I decided to try it out since we've pretty much ate at most Korean places in the twin cities. The waitress sat us down and was very polite. We ordered some wings, takoyaki, and beef bulgogi. It didn't take long for the food to come out since we were the only customers at that time. I thought that we would be getting side dishes since every Korean restaurant provides you with side dishes but I guess Bonchon doesn't do that. I didn't mind too much. I tasted the wings first and I'd have to say, it was really good. It was really crispy on the outside and heat in the inside was on point! As the bulgogi came out, I noticed there was wayyy too much onions on there than it should be. As I took a bite off the bulgogi, it tasted plain. I tasted little to no flavor on it at all. as we kept eating, I noticed I would sometimes only get mushrooms and onions on my fork than the beef itself. It was a real disappointment. The takoyaki was burnt on the outside. It didn't compliment the insides much. I would not recommend this place if you're looking to eat Korean food in general, but if you want some wings then this place could be a spot for you to visit. read more

I've always wanted to try Korean Fried Chicken and I finally did. I wasn't disappointed! The fried chicken was very delicious. The chicken wasn't over sauced and still very flavorful. To be straight forward the two main flavors aren't very different from one another, they taste very similar, for the soy garlic chicken you can taste the soy, the garlic flavor is towards the end. As for the spicy chicken, it really isn't spicy at all but the flavor is of Gochujang which is a very popular Korean chili paste. The batter mix for the fried chicken is great, very light but crispy. Unlike American fried chicken when you eat it you feel very heavy and sluggish, but the Korean Fried Chicken you feel plenty fine and can consume and enjoy quite a bit. Something that is very popular to enjoy with your fried chicken is pickled radish which is a great side dish with any fried food. The pickled radish is crisp and the vinegar from the pickling helps to cut the little oil and grease from the fried chicken. Another great accompaniment is beer! Beer goes great with Korean Fried Chicken and is very popular combination in Korea. Parking is gonna be a pain and the place is small having a maximum occupancy of about 57. If you love fried chicken then definately come here for some KFC and beer! read more

Bonchon has always been a place I've been wanting to visit due to so many people reviewing the place from out of state. Today seemed like a great day to have fried chicken and I was fairly free. Earlier this evening right at 4:30(when they open), I waited outside their door and was the first customer in. The reason why I went early was to beat the long wait that supposedly happened to previous customers. My girlfriend and I ordered the 20 pc wings with half soy garlic and half spice, fries, as well as their takoyaki. The wait was around 15 mins due to our order being the very first order placed. The chicken wings were very crunchy and the outside skin was to die for, but I felt like after every bite, a bunch of grease and oil shot out into my mouth. Both glazes were very tasty though, I just felt like they could have worked on the amount of oil that remained inside the skin. The fries were super crunchy and delicious and seemed to disappear fairly quickly after being placed on our table. When ordering the fries, I highly suggest getting a side of spicy mayo. The biggest upset was probably the takoyaki. Usually takoyaki will have a nice takoyaki glaze as well as a type of mayo, but it felt like the takoyaki we had lacked these two components. The servers were fairly nice and attentive to the customers although at times they forgot stuff. Somewhat understandable due to it still being in it's soft opening stages. The price for each item was not too bad and is very affordable. I suggest going in a big group so that you can sample and try different items on the menu! read more

Bonchon was good, it didn't blow my mind though. We went for lunch on a Sunday and had no wait. Service was quick and friendly. Food came out fast as well. Of course maybe the wings/drums would be different. We didn't order them. Came with a side of fries. Good deal for $10 for the lunch deal. We also ordered the salmon avocado ball, and this was amazing. Our favorite thing there for sure. Goes great if you mix it with rice. Flavors were perfect. There was some heat but not too spicy. Ordered a kimchi as well, as expected for flavors. We ordered a tteokbokki as well and this was good good too, just your normal rice and fish cakes. This had cheese too, which when mixed in, makes it really yummy and extra gooey. And lastly we ordered a bull dak. Very similar to the tteokbokki, it came out on a skillet, but it didn't seem to be hot off of the skillet so we're thinking more for show. Basically just replace the fish cake with chicken in this dish and that's what you have. They're both good, but I prefer the tteokbokki. Seemed for traditional, however in both dishes there was an abundance of white onions and scallions... like wayyyyyy too much, so if you're not a fan, just be prepared to pick out a lot of them from these 2 dishes. Spice level was about a medium on these 2 dishes. Overall. I have this place a 3 because I wouldn't purposely drive outta my way to go to this place. I had a good experience here. I was afraid I was going to be really disappointed because of the reviews but I was happy with the food. We ordered the takoyaki and the half & half signature fried chicken. The takoyaki was good but it would've been even better if they had more tako inside. Our wings were actually crunchy and very tasty. My favorite was the spicy flavor. It was sweet, crunchy, spicy and tangy. The soy sauce was just sweet, crunchy and tangy. I ordered a small combo of chicken drumsticks and wings with both sauces and I was not impressed. The sauce is okay, a tad too sweet and a tad too salty, weird to say that but you can taste them separately. The meat was also a tad dried. Then I ordered their pork bun and that was what make me disappointed. They had coleslaw in their buns! Like whattttt? They just don't make sense to me and the taste was so odd. We came for the wings and we're not disappointed. The wings are unique because of a sweet and crunchy texture that had a ton a flavor packed into each bite. The wings are also a decent size, probably 1.5x Buffalo Wild Wings standard wing. We also tried the Bull Dan which was really spicy but really good. We did take out I ordered a small order of wings with garlic soy sauce and the choice of the two sides are either coleslaw or radish I ordered the radish so first my order was wrong because I ordered wings and even on the box it was checked wings and you are supposed to get 10 small wings but they gave me wings and little drummies . second of all after eating about three or four of the wings there was a hair in one of those wings which was pretty disgusting . It was not on top of the wing, it actually was inside it. No I did not call the restaurant because it is too much hassle to go back and get another order . Or go drive back to get a "credit". and I really did not want to eat more of that after finding the hair. I'd probably not order any bon chon Korean fried chicken again.
