I've ordered takeout a few times from this chain and had mediocre experiences, so my expectations were pretty low for going in person for a quick bite to eat today. The resturant had a warm lighting with calm music playing, and an overall chill vibe. I had the beef bulgogi cheese fries which were amazing and came out fast the beef flakes were tender yet crispy, and the fries were perfectly cooked as well! There was a beautiful cheese pull . The chicken was fine, not really noteworthy, but maybe that's just because i had the fries. My partner got a sugar brushed corn dog which I stole a few bites of which was also awesome. Yall, I have eaten bonchon in various cities with various people who have different taste pallets and everyone has agreed that this food is objectively pretty good. However everytime I have returned to this location the food had gotten worse and worse and the service slower and slower. On this particular trip, my friend got the typical chicken Katsu and I got japchae. My friends katsu came out charred! Even our waitress was like... im so sorry it shouldn't look like that. I think it was worse because we both have ordered chicken katsu before and we KNEW immediately how it was suppose to look. I was honestly shocked that the busser was comfortable setting it on the table like that! My japchae was fine but there was no effort in the flavors or the presentation, it just was thrown together. I don't think I'll be coming back to this location because unfortunately they have been consistently missing the mark. If you're coming here for some wings they should be fine but maybe leave the other things for another Korean restaurant. read more

Very tasty Korean double fried chicken here. They have a lower bar area and an upper dining area. Some other dishes and small plates too on the food menu if you want more than just wings. Drink menu has a lot of different cocktails, soju, and rice beers. Got the korean bbq sauced wings. They were out of the soy garlic that night! The food here is pretty good , the atmosphere is relaxing with vibes, however they pick and choose when to do things. For example , I come here oftenly with my boyfriend after work to grab a drink and wings. Not once have they asked me for an id, the one time I actually don't have it with me , they asked. I've had the Bonchon in California but never in Philadelphia. I heard about their special of $1 wings on Monday and Tuesday so brought the group here and it was great! The special is very barebones - only the wings and technically no take-out. You can order sauces/sides that would normally come with the combo on the side if you're missing them. The max per person is 15 wings and each person can only do one flavor -- each person just orders a different flavor and we all shared. They only have 5 flavors and I believe only one of them is dry? I'm used to ordering a mix of wet and dry but this past time we had three saucey ones that were distinct but after a while do taste similiar. This place is a pretty awesome chain. I usually enjoy their Korean fried chicken but I was definitely in the mood to try something new. I got the Takoyaki which is grilled octopus. It was pretty good. I really liked their batter. I did find it weird that there were bonito flakes on it. It created a weird texture with it. The dish came out pretty fast. We also split some shrimp shumai. I didn't really like the honey Dijon dressing. I felt like I would have rather they put soy sauce on the dish. Usually if I have a meal below 4 stars I don't post it because I don't like to be negative and everyone can have a bad day. After talking to others though I felt I had to post this as many had a similair experience. Bonchon is a famous Korean chain known for their amazing crisp chicken. I was super excited to visit. I sat at the bar as I usually do when I dine alone so as not to take up a whole table and hurt business. The Food: Immaculate, no issue here except even the spiciest option had rice or corn syrup in the glaze to make it sticky and shiny. Personally it was to sweet for me. The Chicken Breading was crisp and heavenly, the meat was juicy, the radish and kim chi gave a refreshing break. The chicken reheats like a dream, order more than you can eat for yummy midnight snacks. The Drink: Vibrant strawberry flavor, probably better for a group. The happy hour deals are great. But it was very sweet with no fizz, no sour, just sweet and sort of milky. It would be fine if the glaze on the chicken wasn't also so sweet. I think I should have ordered a Sour cocktail or Hoppy beer. The Service: The bartender, servers and kitchen staff seemed to be posted up around the bar. I felt unwelcome and ignored for most of my stay as the employees drank and chatted. I worked in resturants for 10 years and I'm no prude. A shot or a drink makes the shift go better, and I don't mind that. Still no one seemed to be coming up for Air. Most of the Customers seemed to be on the upper level, I would be curious to know if anyone was taking care of them. Let me say my order was correct, and I was always asked if I wanted another drink and if everything was to my liking. It was the fact that from the time I walked in until the time I left, most of the staff acted more like bar patrons than employees. The Atmosphere: It was clean but lighting was quite dim. If felt more like a dive bar than a high end chicken chain. Combined with the flippant staff the atmosphere actually felt threatening in a mild way. Short Version: The Food Rocks! Maybe get it for take away or Doordash though. Or go to Crown Chicken. Most other Korean wings sell their chicken for $1.50-$1.75 apiece. For the entire order we spent $40 total, we got 10 pc of wings, fries, and a cocktail. The wings were mediocre and tasted as if they refried leftovers, which also contributed to our theory since the wings came out super fast upon ordering. The service was so bad. Our original waitress didn't stop by to drop off water or to say hi, but upon entering the restaurant we saw that they were at the bar chatting. 10-15 minutes passed and no one came to take our order, so a different waiter took it. We figured out who our waitress was after asking for our check and a third waiter had to ask who it was. The waitress only stopped by to drop off our check. Bonchon in general has the same taste if you go to any of their chains and it is one of my favorite taste out of all the chains, including it's competitor BBQ chicken. As usual, you will expect to find a tasty crispy soy garlic, the original flavor, when you order with bones of course. The prices are super high so it's pretty much unaffordable. I'd like to give it a three star due to the price of the chicken however, because of Bonchon and its taste I'll give it a four out of five star. This is one of the only location that's in Chinatown easily assessable for families shopping for groceries. There's also another chain that happened to open up this past year at King of Prussia Mall, however I feel like their quality is slightly different. Some of the recommendations i have is making sure that the quality of chicken is kept high and that the crispiness is always there. Never compromise the secret recipe. If you feel like the price is too high and you're looking for an alternative I would recommend going to BBQ chicken that's around the corner half a block away. Late night food run with my boo--I haven't eaten here since I was in college so I really had no expectation at all considering that I'm pescatarian and don't eat chicken. However, I don't remember the menu having as many options to choose from when I visited prior. Our server was very helpful and even bought out a sample of sauces for us to try as we had a hard time making up our minds lol. I was able to find quite a few things in the menu that were friendly to my diet such as the veggie dumpling and the japchae which is a sweet potato glass noodle stir fry--Opted out of having the meat with the dish and I loved it. I've tried it in other Bonchon restaurants and countless K fried chicken places across Korea and the U.S., but this restaurant is by far the worst when it comes to Korean Fried Chicken and Tteokbokki. I ordered Korean-style fried wings, half & half (soy garlic and sweet & spicy), along with Tteokbokki. Honestly, I wouldn't even call this Korean food--it tasted more like Chinese seasoning than anything Korean. This misrepresentation of our cuisine is frustrating. Wings: * Size: They were enormous, almost like turkey legs. When ordering wings, no one expects giant, tough pieces of meat that lack flavor. Of course tough meat texture, bland thick meat..! * Taste: Both sauces (soy garlic and sweet & spicy) were overwhelmingly salty, overly sweet, and heavily soy-based, with no balance. The flavors felt more like Chinese seasoning than Korean. Tteokbokki: * Completely off. It tasted nothing like Tteokbokki--again, more like a Chinese dish. One note - parking is pretty tough in this area, and it seems to have gotten worse. The chicken used to be my favorite, but it seems pretty hit-or-miss recently. Bonchon is going downhill. They're not as good as they used to be. The only reason we even ordered from Bonchon is because the Pelicana near us has a limited menu and doesn't have anything else except fried chicken, and I wanted Japchae. So, we called Bonchon to place an order for wings and Japchae for dinner. We were disappointed to see that the Japchae portions have shrank. The Japchae used to be packed in a large Styrofoam box and is good for two meals. Now, it's packed in a small round plastic Tupperware, drenched in bulgogi sauce, with many large pieces of onion on it. Don't even get me started on the wings. We ordered only wings, but our order came with a mix of wingdings (Bonchon doesn't sell wings anymore) AND drumettes. Although I do order pick-up or from food delivery app for their wings a lot, the best way to eat these juicy fried chicken wings is definitely in-store! Also you get to pick the pickled sides, the puckery crunch of the carrots and daikon really helps balance out the richness of the wings. The garlic sauce is recommend. Be aware that the spicy sauce is kinda spicy to those who doesn't eat spicy a lot, try half and half first. Overall, the service meets the expectation but it could have done better, especially when there was one time I ordered pick up and arrived after about 20-30 mins but still waited another 20 mins for my orders. The ambiance in the Chinatown store is good! You can order drinks at the bar or sit upstairs. The University city one is smaller and not recommended for a date there, better for casually hanging out with friends. My friend was a little disappointed about the buns because it was very small and I must agree since I've been here multiple times and always enjoyed the buns. The location at 1020 Cherry Street is not what it used to be. The restaurant itself looks run down from the outside and the inside as well. The advertise Lychee MARTINI but never have it the last 3 times we were here. Funny since there is a market up the street from here that sells all these ingredients. This martini should be available. They also stopped serving the avocado/salmon dish which was a favorite as well and no longer available. This may be our last visit to this location unfortunately. read more
