i passed by bondi sushi on many occasions and decided to try it on a sunday around 5 pm without a reservation. there was no wait for two. this restaurant has an upscale feel, and you can watch the sushi be prepared fresh. they have an extensive menu with a few vegetarian options. i tried the avocado truffle hand roll with cauliflower rice. i thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was more on the pricey side, i believe it was $12 for a small portion. i also tried the miso soup, which i really enjoyed. it met my expectations. it was hot, had tofu in it, and was pretty standard for miso soup. the service was great. this was a good sushi experience, comparable to other spots that i have tried in the city. read more

Today's afternoon meal was fabulous! 2 pieces of scallop nigiri with lime zest and pink sea salt and two hand rolls. First was yellow tail with scallion and since both were so good, I tried the hot and spicy scallop hand roll. The first was exquisite in taste and texture and the second warm and not too hot or spicy. A nice lingering taste. Service is fast and friendly, and the chef checks in to see what I think. I love this place! Happy Hour is from 3-6 Monday through Friday. When I've skipped lunch at the office and am heading home and it's too early for dinner, this is the perfect place to stop at 3 or 4 to get delicious wine and sushi. The wine is a steal at $5/glass (shhh). The lobster rolls are amazing; so are the sticky rice salmon and yellowtail. Served with hot towels and plenty of wasabi and ginger. Sandra and Curtis are wonderful, caring hosts. This is the place we all dream about -- good food, affordable pricing, lovely hosts. I bet they do a great private party too. I happen to be right by BONDI, on Wednesday, Oct 18, 2023, and needed to eat before going to a meeting nearby, so I thought okay, this is meant to be, because I had passed by BONDI a few times; I was curious about it, and it looked a tad mysterious with very nice low light inside. I checked out a few reviews on YELP, And so, I went in, and...I FELT LIKE I WON A PRIZE!!! BECAUSE...it was Happy Hour, and that meant $5 HANDROLLS!!! I'm not really a drinker, so the food was my focus. LOL I enjoyed the handrolls, see my photos please, and I even ordered a yummy dessert -the Crème Brûlée, which was delicious and delightful. I had sat at the sushi bar, which is square in shape, and there are several tables along a few of the sides. I was waiting to write my review because I wanted to return to BONDI, and have an item from the regular menu. But, alas, it is now early December and I do plan to return to BONDI, during Happy Hour, for more yummy handrolls, AND I also want to try the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, because I love that dish, and the person sitting near me at the sushi bar was enjoying that dish. As a matter of fact, it was her "usual". So, I must try that dish. I will update once I return to BONDI. But, I did not want to hold off on writing this review any longer and so, here it is...and there will be more to come soon. :) I can tell you, THE SERVICE WAS VERY NICE, with a welcoming and professional demeanor. The manager -I believe his name is Karl-I can't find the BONDI card this minute, and that's where I wrote his name, was very nice, and he made sure every patron was being served and enjoying their meal. He clearly was giving 110% to his managerial responsibilities. Kudos to him!! Stay tuned, I shall visit BONDI again, within the next few weeks. But, yes, I would recommend BONDI. This has by far been the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. Our group of 9 (split in groups of 4, 3, 2 since max amount of people for a reservation was 4) came in for their unlimited handroll promotion and the moment we came in, we already had to wait 10 mins before being seated. Ok, a slight wait was not an issue at the moment. Upon sitting down, some of us were missing plates and sauce plates. Ok, not a problem asking them to retrieve those. The REAL and CATASTROPHIC problem came when we started ordering. They took our order for the crispy rice appetizer and their premium nigiri set prior to ordering hand rolls. Some of us got theirs and others didn't. They THEN proceed to take the orders for the hand rolls of the ones who received their appetizers and nigiri set and start to make and hand some of those orders out while the rest of us didn't get our initial items yet. We eventually got our items 30 mins after seating. As the reservation went on, each and every one of us sporadically had to wait and get whatever they were making at the time. As time was coming to an end, the dessert was suppose to be a lava cake. However, the manager stated that they unfortunately no longer had anymore lava cake and asked us if we wanted mochi. As he unwrapped the mochi from the package in front of us, another group (predominately non-Asian), had the option to get crème brûlée. Not once was that offered to us in replacement of the lava cake. Furthermore, throughout the dinner, the staff members that took our orders continuously cheered and drank sake instead of working on fixing our orders while we had to mention to the chefs that some of the orders we placed was not what we got. Instead, whenever they noticed we were a bit upset, they would offer another shot of sake, stating it was "on them" even though it was advertised that it was unlimited in the promotion. Overall, our group and I will never go back. This was definitely not worth $90 for a handroll omakase place. If they want to continue to be in business, they need to tremendously provide better service, take more initiative on everyone's orders and ensure that we are promptly enjoying our meal. read more

Take out - I was surprised to see the menu to dine in and take out quite different when I got there. I was ready to order some sushi pieces to go but later realized that those are only for dining in. The website either didn't specify or I was a bit confused about where to look. I got the salmon crispy rice and a few other rolls. In my honest opinion, I wasn't too impressed with the sushi overall. The crispy rice was my least favorite thing, I was quite surprised that it was considered one of the most popular things to get, but maybe I am spoiled with good sushi rice and it wasn't for me. The rice was all chewy and it really didn't complement the sushi. Looking back, I wished I peeled off the fish and eaten it by itself but instead I kept giving the benefit of the doubt even though it came with four pieces. Been to Bondi in Brooklyn and it was a much better experience there! Ordered the crab rice bowl, lobster sticky rice roll and some side sauces. All were a disappointment! The crab was like a dip and it wasn't very flavorful. The sides that came with it were mostly bland and didn't go well with the crab. The lobster crispy rice was terrible. The rules were all falling over and a mess. The crispy rice was not crispy and the lobster was bland and flavorless. TAKEOUT ORDER Was in the mood for some sushi. I'm very skeptical about where I order raw fish. Decided to give this place a try based off the photos online and honestly, it didn't give what it should've gave. I went back a second time to make sure and confirmed, it's JUST OK. The best thing I ordered was the crispy lobster, and truffle avocado, which wasn't crispy by the way. The rice was very gummy. The lobster however, was fresh and I enjoyed the accompaniments on top. I also tried a bowl with yellowtail, sriracha kale, ponzu corn, salt and vinegar wontons, white rice and micro greens. Everything was great BUT the fish. The fish was horrendously cut and didn't taste very fresh. Yellowtail is my go to when ordering raw because the taste is supposed to be very mild, this wasn't unfortunately. Bondi is a neat spot. There is one big island bar with bar seating all around. They also have a takeout side where they do a bunch of business. Went with the $32 lunch special. They also have a $26 one. The salmon sashimi and crispy rice were delicious. The sushi was well made and fresh. I bet they do more takeout than dine in. My husband and I love going to Bondi for their happy hour deals and lunch specials. Everything is always fresh and delicious. It's also one of the very few sushi spots that offers cauliflower rice. The manager Curtis is so friendly and accommodating and you can tell when you're there that there are regulars (like us) that keep coming back because of the ambience, service, and great food. Neither of the "crispy rice" pieces actually had crispy rice... simply tough and chewy rice. Perhaps the dine in experience is better, but the takeout was terrible.
