When I have no appetite but need to eat, the Octopus Kimchi Porridge always brings it back and the Pumpkin Porridge is an absolute must! My kiddos really enjoy all of the porridges as well. Although it is quite pricy compared to what we are used to in Korea, but it is restorative food and nourishment is worth it. Juk is known for its creamy texture, nutrient density, and the thoughtful use of ingredients, and Bonjuk delivers exactly that experience. Bonjuk offers an impressive range of classic juk varieties, including samgyejuk (ginseng chicken porridge), jeonbokjuk (abalone porridge), hobakjuk (pumpkin porridge), and patjuk (red bean porridge). I was initially disappointed, but that feeling quickly faded. The patjuk was perfectly prepared--thick, creamy, silky smooth, earthy, and mildly sweet. My family had no trouble enjoying a second serving. All three juk varieties we tried were excellent. The homemade broths used in most of the porridges deliver a deep, savory umami flavor, and each bowl is consistently thick, creamy, and deeply comforting. Many Koreans still believe in juk's nutritional and medicinal benefits, particularly for soothing the digestive system and balancing Qi energy--and after trying the porridges here, it is easy to understand why. Overall, this experience did not disappoint and we will likely order again when the occasion calls for it. Breakdown below: Service (3/5): Standard. We called in for a to-go order and they told me it'll take 15 mins. I asked for 25 mins since we had to fill up on gas on the way. When we received the porridge, it was hot and stayed hot for quite some time after, which we appreciated. Food (4/5): We ordered the salmon and vegetable porridge for my daughter. She normally doesn't like to eat the same thing for multiple meals but ate this one up to the end (picky toddler). She also normally doesn't eat that fast but ate this up rather quickly. Her little brother showed similar enthusiasm, and the few bites my husband and I took were much enjoyed. I am a huge fan of Korean porridge and an even bigger fan of Bonjuk! They used to have a location in Fullerton but they closed down during COVID, which broke my heart! However, upon looking for somewhere to eat with my wife, Bonjuk popped up and what I originally thought was an error, was actually in fact a new opening in Buena Park! Bonjuk - Buena Park - is tucked inside the Hannam Chain market, which can be confusing if you are looking for a outside banner. Unlike the previous location, this location is much smaller, with limited seating. It seems that most customers do to-go orders! However, if you are wanting to dine-in, which I always prefer for porridge, avoid lunch time or you might have to wait a little (especially with porridge that takes a while to prepare). My go-to item is the Abalone Porridge, never misses! Always hits the spot! I don't know if it's because I eat more now but it seems that the bowl (portion) got smaller than previous locations. My wife got the Vegetable Porridge, which was my first time trying it as well and it was delicious! Will have to order that on my next visit! Overall, I never have a bad experience with Bonjuk, and whether you are sick/under the weather or just craving porridge, Bonjuk is by far the best place to go in this area for Korean porridge. I always get porridge from this place when I'm feeling a bit off. It's super tasty, clean, and you can really tell they put care into it. Reminds me of the ones I used to have in Korea--same great flavor. Last time I went, they had a new carrot juice that they make fresh every day. I'm not usually a fan (got kind of a picky, kid-like palate), but I gave it a shot--and I actually really liked it! It was fresh, mildly sweet, and I drank the whole thing so fast. Amazing, excellent juk. The rice kernels are plump and toothsome, holding up well to the delicious creamy broth. The abalone was too chewy for my taste but it added good flavor anyway. Ughh soo good. Similar to Vietnamese chao, Chinese congee, this is the Korean equivalent. There was a location in Fullerton that closed down. Great for comfort, when you're sick, when you're cold. Delicious flavors and side dishes, but so far and so expensive compared to its other cultural equivalent (double the price). It's located inside a super market, people are nice. Not a lot of seating.
