This is our new standby for sushi in New Tampa. The staff is fantastic! There is a decent selection of sake and wine. In addition to delicious sushi rolls they also offer yummy basic Japanese entrees. During COVID this remains our favorite in the area. They do take out and also dine in at the sushi bar at the time of this review. If you want a custom roll they will do it. I made a Tropical Eel roll which is eel, mango and chives with light rice and masago. Delish! They usually have fatty tuna and uni too but of course that's hit or miss. read more

Me and niece decided on sushi and were looking for a place. First time here and they did not disappoint at all. We had a calamari appetizer which cooked just right and was cut in to strips which I'd never seen. We ordered three rolls a California, Miami and Bonsai Special. bonsai is tucked into a cute little strip mall across the street from the Wiregrass outlet mall. The inside is super cozy and I definitely recommend sitting at the sushi bar or in one of the booths. The servers are super attentive and helpful It was like they knew what I needed before I did. My sake was was crisp and smooth; I'm a sucker for anything lychee too! The hijiki seaweed salad was so good I almost got two but decided to try the baby octopus salad instead. I'm glad I did too because it was more thank I could have asked for. It had this sort of sweet, salty, smoky flavor that I wanted to put on top of everything! Now for the sushi! I decided to get the bonsai roll because I knew I'd only be able to get it here. When I saw how big the pieces were I was worried I couldn't get it all into my mouth but I figured a way to get it in there and it was soooooo good! All the fish tasted so fresh and the sweetness from the tamago took it to another level. I'm always excited for when Uni is in season so when I saw they had some available I had to order it! it was super fresh and smooth it would be so good On top of salmon roll! I usually get Tamago sweet tofu and flying fish roe with quail inside of it everywhere I go to gage the quality of each restaurant I go to and I was supper happy with the quality of those items! Everything about this place was appealing. Inside it was calm and quiet -- a nice contrast to the busy Bruce B Downs traffic outside. I was seated immediately on a busy Friday evening. The server was nice enough to say she would wait to bring my husband's hot towel so it wouldn't get cold. He was searching for parking space. This strip is busy as it also houses Bonefish Grill on the end. They have a sushi menu on which to write your order plus a regular menu with cooked items and sushi. A few items are Korean like the bulgogi. My husband ordered various fish sushi style plus a roll with fried tempura shrimp and cucumber plus lettuce. I took a taste of the toll and it was very good. I ordered pork gyoza appetizer. It came out hot from the stove and perfectly cooked. They were very good with dipping sauce. In addition I ordered a hamachi collar -- this is the neck piece of a yellowtail snapper. I asked for it cooked well done. That is, not sushi style -- but cooked all the way through. The server said I could request it extra crispy. When it came, it was the best I'd ever eaten. Crispy and flavorful from a charcoal grill. It was messy to eat but so worth it. This is my favorite sushi spot in North Tampa/New Tampa/Wesley Chapel. The service is excellent, the sushi is fresh and beautifully presented, and the unique Crab Rangoon they serve is really something special. The filling is wrapped in a Japanese basil leaf and lightly fried. It's so good that I always forget to snap a photo before I dig in! Some of my favorite sushi rolls are the spider roll with soft shell crab, rainbow roll, which is a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, white fish and avocado, and the bonsai special roll, which has pretty much everything in it; it's very large and flavorful. I could eat here every week and never get tired of it! The hot towels provided are a nice touch. Cute lil spot in a busy area I checked out for date night with my hubby on a Friday night. It was very busy but we were seated promptly. Masks are required while walking around and the staff was wearing their masks at all times. We started with calamari & crab Rangoon. The calamari was pretty good but I really loved the crab rangoon! It's different then normal Chinese version, just get it! We had the Matt's, centipede, & 2 Jung rolls. The sushi was excellent, very fresh! The ambiance is better than most sushi restaurants in the area. We ate there on a Friday night and had reservations, for a booth for 2 people, at 6:30 pm. To my pleasant surprise, the booth was waiting for us. Our waitress was very good, extremely attentive and polite. We had hot sake and ordered eel and avocado roll, eel and cucumber roll, salmon roll, and our waitress suggested the special Gator Roll. The presentation of the rolls was very nice and our waitress was quick to bring us extra ginger when we requested it. Everything was good, the rice was creamy and fresh. The only negative I can give is that the pieces of fish were very small in all the rolls. The gator was so small, I couldn't find it. All I saw and tasted was the batter that it was fried in. I'm not a big fan of fried food. Nor will I order sushi that contains cream cheese or mayo. To me, that's not sushi. For the price they charge, they should not skimp on the fish. After all, we are ordering eel and salmon rolls, not rice rolls with a small flavoring of fish. I don't expect large pieces of fish, just enough so you can enjoy it and not feel as though you ate a lot of rice. read more

I've been here a few times and find it to be enjoyable and consistent. They have an excellent selection of sushi rolls and clearly indicate what's cooked versus what's raw. Last week I stopped in for lunch with a friend. We shared a Gator Roll. Yumm! Delicious! Flaky and crispy gator tail on top of a Cali roll, which was a first for me in sushi. We also had the Spicy Scallop sushi (nice size), Spicy Tuna was tasty, the Mexican roll was okay, and the Volcano Roll was delicious! Creamy avocado, Krab delight. To die for. Really. This place is a little gem! I've been going to Bonsai for over 6 years and it's always been delicious. The crab Rangoon's are the most amazing things ever, it's krab and cream cheese in the middle between 2 shiso leaves and then deep fried. The fry is so good on these, perfectly crunchy and crispy that this is to die for. The sauces they put over them just too it off. Stop by and try them, they will hang your life! The sushi here is always fresh, fresh ingredients. My favorite rolls are the crunchy roll, the Waikiki, shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna and Matt's roll. Last night I visited this location and I have today the sushi I orders was not really worth the price that I paid. I bought 7 rolls and spent about $80. There was not a lot of taste and I believe they messed up my order. Two of the 7 rolls were good. I ordered my favorite roll a dragon roll and it was horrible. But I ordered a Tampa roll and it was really good. I do not think it was a good night for this location. I do have to say that the sushi was fresh, the location was really nice, and the price was not really that bad I just ordered for 3 adults. I would come back to this place again! read more

We ordered alot, and shared it. So here's what we got: tuna tataki, Kalbi short ribs (with sushi rice, stir fried beansprouts, and salad with carrot ginger dressing), volcano roll, spider roll, and eel roll, with tea, all this for $49. All was very good, but what stood out like a shining star was the delicious perfectly cooked and seasoned Kalbi short ribs with the salad and sides, for a mere $8.95. I've had to pay $20 or more for that at Korean restaurants, and it wasn't this good! The Kalbi alone would bring me back for another meal. We were very full, and had to get a small container for 3 pieces of sushi and a piece of tuna, a nice little snack for tonight's Netflix shows. read more

This place has some of my favorite sushi around. What I like about this place is even when you get it to go the presentation is always on pointe. The sushi is fresh and the variety offered is awesome. A few places around seem to have la limited selection but Bonsai Sushi has so many different rolls to choose from. Came by to add to our list of Sushi we have tried. We ordered the BBQ Calamari, a delicious and interesting appetizer. The waitress was sure to tell us it is served whole. It was whole and a little weird looking but tasted great! We also had Kalbi steak, it was ok, not sure we would order again. We had 4 sushi rolls Kamakazi, Bagel, Matt's and Pink Lady. Pink Lady was our favorite, you could taste the fish but did not taste fishy. Matt's roll was also very good. We thought this sushi is near the top of our list. We will be back for more sushi.
