How does this place make money? I mean, I love it. They have vintage video games and game consoles, Blu-rays, DVDs, books, and manga, but how does it stay open? I went for the first time on a Tuesday afternoon when there were maybe four customers total....and five employees. And the employees do a GREAT job of keeping EVERYTHING in perfect, neatly organized alphabetical order. It makes most Kohl's employees look like useless dime bags. Don't get mad at me if you work at a Kohl's, just walk around your own store and take a gander at your "neatly" organized clearance clothes rack. Then peruse even your high-end suits/upper brand areas. It's a hot mess, and I haven't even gotten into your shoes section yet. But OK back to the topic at hand: how are these Bookoff employee and other overhead costs covered?? Is there a secret section of the store that sells "other things" that is only accessible by a secret bookshelf entrance? I imagined mah-jong parlor, underground Yakuza gambling den or maybe something more salacious but don't sue me, Bookoff, I'm just kidding. Seriously though. How does this place earn enough money to stay open? I wanted to see a mini Magic the Gathering or Yugi-oh (sorry I don't know how to spell this) battle arena in the store that hosts tournaments and charges by the hour to use, but nope. It's just all media and used A/V equipment for sale. And things they sell here, much of it used, aren't expensive. So how does this place stay open? Someone please help me solve this riddle. If you are the type of girl who prides herself on finding treasures in a thrift store, or the type guy who prides himself on his ability to spot a bargain, especially if you are a Japanophile, then BookOff used to be totally be for you! Every location used to be THE spot to hit for deals on manga, anime, comics, books, toys - all at really low prices. It was all good, rare stuff, too. And then they changed their business model. In the beginning their merchandise was predominately Japanese-language. Over the years, tho', their English area has expanded from one cubby to over half of the store. To fill all of that extra space they began to focus less on "all the GOOD stuff" and more on "ALL the stuff". Couple shelves laden with undesirable goods along with hugely inflated prices and one finds oneself wondering why they still come in here. For me, this is a habitual stop-off before I go into Tokyo Central. I haven't bought anything here in years. Whenever I get lucky and find a good Pop or action figure, they are always priced higher than online. The customer-base has changed, too. It is less Japanophile/nerd and more err.. something different. Of course, it is always fun to check the rogues gallery photos they hang behind the registers to see if anybody I know has been caught stealing lately.I'm They have opened more locations and seem to be doing well, but I miss the good ol' nerd days at BookOff. read more

This location is one of the best, after Gardena! they have a great selection of Japanese manga, especially ones by Osamu Tezuka. Glenn here is the most helpful employee there. He is very patient, and he helps me when I order books from Japan. So far, he has helped me order almost the entire Riki-Oh manga collection, and now I am getting some Japanese Dr Slump manga soon from Japan. He is very professional and nice, and is happy to help me with my orders. He deserves a raise! read more

I've bought used DVD's from Book Off for many years, and I noticed something about their pricing that was unsettling; they price some normal DVD's at higher prices than what they currently sell at from any retailer, like Target or Wal Mart. I called them, and asked them about that, offering to pay a few dollars less for their used DVD, which was priced four dollars more than a new one, and they said "No", however, when I've sold them my used DVD's they offer me about 50 cents to a Dollar for any used DVD. I had some manga, books, CDs, and a few figures that I lost interest and found out that this place can take those items. They didn't pay that much for the books (it was around $1 or $2 each). Combined with the other things, I got $101. I used some of the money towards some Japanese manga I was interested in and some A3! badges. There was also a decent-sized figure section, which is perfect for finding figures that are OOP. Unfortunately, there wasn't any JP music in the CD section during this visit. I might have to go to another location for them. I'm glad I found a spot where I can sell some figures and stuff. Don't expect to get a lot of money when you sell your stuff here. TONS of used books but they're mostly Japanese, which is fine if you're not Asian-illiterate. There's an English section too and it's mostly crap unless you're a high school student needing a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird or any other out of date questionably canonized text. There are movies, games, electronics, and random wares here as well, not only books. Dishes, silverware, stereos, printers, toys, clocks, etc. You'll also find old gaming systems, including a regular NES and Atari along with newer systems as well. You will also find used (and hopefully well sanitized) anime figures which are all scantily clad and comically posed with hilarious body proportions. It's awesome, but I wouldn't touch them even with gloves on. *shudder* I bought a Japanese cookbook and am looking forward to my next visit. Used bookstores are almost gone. This is a Japanese used book store that also carries English books. I read a lot of Japanese language books, and I come often to surprise myself. The place seemed to be reorganized over and over every time I went in lately. Sadly, I didn't know if it's really for the better. I wish the store was even bigger. :) I love the selection; however, if given the opportunity, I would go to the Westminster Mall location for the size. Although I love this place- I give it 4 stars because it'll take you one quick trip to your local friends of the library store to realize that there are better prices out there (for books at least). I have been to this store 3 times. The first time, I took a few books. The books were all good books, and in great condition. I thought that I would trade or sell them. They offered me the ridiculously low sum of $2.40. I just gave them the books. The next time I went, I took 3 or 4 books in great condition. I just gave them to the store. They didn't even say thank you. Yesterday, I took 3 more books there --- one was a novel by Vargas Llosa, another was an award-winning book called The Sympathizer. All 3 books were in great condition. Their employee said that they would just throw them away, and suggested that I take them to a library. I told him that I had donated books to the store twice before. He said that I could sell them, but they weren't allowed to take donations. I said okay. He did not even look up the price to offer me, he just gave me 30 cents. I like book stores. I have donated books to several in the area. This place is crazy. I found Book Off around 8 months ago, and instantly fell in love with this place. First off, this place doesn't just sell used books. There's a ton of used DVDs, CDs, video games, electronics, appliances, and other various objects. Products are decently priced (except for the musical instruments *cough*) and in working condition. Every time I visit this place, there's is always an item that I would like to buy. Since then, I've checked out the other locations, but the Costa Mesa store probably has the best products. I'll list some of my favorite things I've bought: Four N64 Controllers- $20 Mario Party 3- $35 Cowboy Bebop Complete Series- $18 FLCL-$5 Jimi Hendrix Greatest Hits CD- $7 Blokus with a Go board- $1 !!! The past year I've resumed on my Nintendo collection, and I've spent a whole day trying to locate a place that'll satisfy both my modern and retro needs. I came here not expecting anything, and I was pleasantly in for a surprise. I don't know the names of the employees yet, but the tall guy is hilarious and loves talking about games with you. He's been very helpful in recommending titles, both old and new. They have a lot of rare content that's usually priced twice or three times as high on eBay. I was able to pick up both Zelda games for the original DS for a decent price, as well as half a dozen Amiibos I never thought I'd ever be able to get ahold of. They constantly have new things there each week, so you'll never know what you'll find! read more

I have thousands of DVDs that I am liquidating. I called ahead and explained that they were from a rental company that I closed and I verified they bought movies and checked their hours. I drove quite a bit out of my way to bring about 400 to their store. I dropped them off and left my info. They called me about 30 minutes later and told me that they couldn't buy them because they were former rentals. I was furious, because I had specifically asked about that the day before. read more

There are several Book-off locations in SoCal and the Costa Mesa store is one of two locations that keep a largely Japanese inventory of books and other things. Here's a few things to know about this location: #1 - The place is kind of like Amoeba Records and a used bookstore combined into one. You'll find loads of music CDs. DVDs, and Blurays all for pretty low prices. #2 - The Japanese manga books are endless. It's like a library with the numerous amounts of manga and other Japanese books. #3 - They have videogame systems! If you are looking for a used PS2 or Gamecube system (which Gamestop refuses to carry anymore), this place will have it for you. The main reason I went here is becuz I was looking for the Final Fantasy 13 Ultimania books, which are only sold in Japan or on Ebay Japan. Sadly, the amount of Japanese books they carry for videogames is very limited, though I did find what I was looking for (kind of). If I had purchased these books on Ebay, I might've paid 4x as much, which is why it's awesome that I found it here. The biggest surprise for me is the fact that they sell used videogames (both English and Japanese as well as console systems (next-gen and retro)! Who'da thunk that you'd be able to find imported Japanese videogames at a bookstore! While it was tempting to want to buy these Japanese import games, I remembered that I don't have the hardware to run it (boo-hoo, I know). But I did find a used Japanese PS3 copy of Final Fantasy 13, which actually works on an American PS3! And it only cost me $15, which is a steal. I tried the game on my PS3 and not only did it work but I didn't understand any of the language! That's import games in a nutshell, LOL! The reason I had to bump off one star from the rating is becuz the location is so far from where I am. Driving 45 minutes from San Gabriel Valley to Costa Mesa isn't exactly my cup of tea, but that shouldn't detract the fact that this place is great for Japanese book enthusiasts. I'm here to talk about my selling experience. I brought in a couple of old Gundams and Funko Pops that were just collecting dust to try and get some extra cash. As with all consignment shops, they give you a percentage of their selling price, which isn't that much to begin with so don't expect to get that much back. What really made me want to give them 5 stars is that the employee there gave one of my figures back because he told me that it was better to sell it on eBay due to it being worth a lot of money. The fact that they took the time to inform me of my Funko Pop's value and suggest selling it myself to make more money really shows that they care. They could have just took it in and sold it for $10 but they didn't. Thanks Jeremy!!! read more

I was here on November 24, 2017 at around 10 to try to see if they had anything. For those who do not know what Bookoff is, it is like a thrifty store (think of Goodwill but better) owned by Japanese people. They sell used items mainly video games, electronics, music, dvd's movies, blu-ray, and of course books. Their selection is big enough so they have a huge variety and in most particular books. They also sell Japanese items as this is one of the Bookoffs that carry Japanese stock. You can also sell some of the items you do not want to them and they'll buy it off from you for a certain price. I know there is a Bookoff in San Diego and I have been there plenty of times, but i had to go to this one because the selections do vary from store to store. My friend was looking at a figurine that came from Comic-con and they actually had it at this store. The only problem is that he waited too long and someone else beat him to buying it. So the lesson learned is if you find something you like, buy it because there might be a chance you will never see it again. But do keep in mind that all sales are final and there is typically a 30 day warranty for your purchases, but you can not return it once you buy it. Although I never had any problems with the purchase, the products you buy here will be used and not new. read more

I had a ton of books (not sure the total number, but 4 boxes full) and 74 CDs. Dropped off the boxes, told it would take 1.5 hours, ended up taking 2 hours and 15 minutes. I got a receipt saying they were paying me $17 for 58 books (that's ok), $5 for three DVDs (that's fine, too) and $1.24 for TWO CDs. When I got home, I counted 57 CDs remaining. So if they paid for two, where are my other 15 CDs. I read another post beforehand about getting ripped off, but I decided to go anyway. Overall, $23 was not worth my time, and with 15 missing CDs, which should have been another $9 or so. Yeah, $32 overall would have been more worthwhile. It worked out to about 30 cents a book, so if that seems good to you, then go for it. As for me, I wouldn't waste my time. read more

People who work at this store are rude and they don't even greet the customers. I went here a couple of times and I had a bad experience every time. The first time I was there, I waited in line to purchase some items and ended up not buying because the wait was too long and because the cashiers took too much time talking to their friends in line. The very last time I went there was to sell some items to them and there were no customers in the store but nobody greeted or offered to help. They almost seemed like they didn't want to do business. Saturday Japanese school was one thing I didn't excel at. That was broken down into many smaller but not any less important let downs (but I did leave that temple being one heck of a dodge ball player). Not learning how to read kanji (popular tattoos that probably means cold noodle dish and not "strength or honor") is one of them. Forgetting how to read katakana (characters used for western words) was another. I'm currently working on wiping out hiragana from my memory as I type this. I did, however, leave a world class origami artist. This bookstore serves as one big ass reminder that I should've given minimal effort to every brush stroke. Along with Japanese comics and books, you can buy your Sarah Palin book here. Or if Kato Kaelin is more your type, you can buy his autobio for $3. Luckily, I haven't forgotten how to read or speak English, yet. There is a music section that caters to all your musical tastes. Imports are naturally around the $20 range. Damn. It's still a better option than paying $50. Video games from Japan are enticing, but I have a hard enough time with them in English. They also have a DVD section with an Anime section. Perfect if you're the type to get his/her rocks off dressing up as Sailor Moon or some Samurai Robot Universal Savior. Just remember, walking around with a sword made out of aluminum wrap isn't cool until you have the proper outfit to compliment it. The Costa Mesa Bookoff is probably the best Bookoff in the Southern California area. It is quite big and has a huge selection of American as well as Japanese language merchandise. The most surprising tidbit about this shop is that a lot of the items are in extremely nice condition, despite being used. Every now and then, the CDs I would purchase would be factory-sealed and around 80% of the retail price at regular Japanese bookstore like Kinokuniya. The selection of music is quite good. A lot of bigger name artists can be found, but extremely limited items and artists who are considered big time idols would rarely show up on the shelves here for obvious reasons. Occasionally, there are some great, lesser-known musicians featured in the selection. A lot of albums are around $7, which is much cheaper than the Gardena location. I think this is by far the most cost-effective way to sample some great Japanese music without downloading and bootlegging. The DVD collection is vast, especially the anime DVDs released in America. There are also more popular DVDs of films and television shows as well. Of course, the selection of books are vast. There are everything from novels to Japanese language magazines. It gets kind of daunting to rifle through the shelves to find something interesting, but it is quite fun for many individuals to spend hours here on end to find a quality bargain. There is a limited number of random toys, like Gundam models and anime figures. Nothing too amazing for collectors, but might catch the eyes of bargain hunters. There are many positives for Bookoff as a buyer. The only drawback might be the sellback as they are very strict about the quality of the items they accept. I am also assuming that they are not offering great money back, but probably better store credit. Some of the more recent and popular video games do offer way better trade-in value than Gamestop (which rip offs a lot of gamers anyways). Sometimes I wonder how Bookoff stays in business, but as a shopper I just pray that they do for a very long time. read more

Make sure to have plenty of time to browse for books, cds and dvds! Today, for $35, I left with 6 books, 3 cds and 1 dvd. It's better than FYE's used cd section. It's better than the used books store in smelly old shops with the creepy old man staring at you. The store will also buy from you. BOOKOFF cleans up the items and makes them new looking. Books are buffed, cds are De-scratched. I've never gotten a bad cd there. Bonus about the CDs, I often can find Japanese printed CDs of Western bands, complete with the bonus tracks that we don't get. And it's significantly cheaper than online or Virgin. Always check the $1 sections first, it's so extensive. Children's books are terrific bargains. Lots of great fiction reads....my place to hit before a beach day or vacation so I can read. When books are a buck, it's easier to pick up that one that I know a friend will enjoy. If I don't find what I want in the $1 section, I hit the other sections. Most are at least 1/2 off the list price. Manga books are a great buy here. The store is always clean, the staff is always willing to help. Even if you aren't Japanese....I promise. The famous Japanese Snobbery is NOT at this store! The Japanese section is the other half of the store. If you can't read Japanese, go to the $1 section, get a colorful magazine picked at random, and stick it on the coffee table. That will amaze your friends...ya know....ya brought that back from your last trip to Japan! or use the pages as WRAPPING PAPER! ORIGAMI! Food magazines are well displayed, and step by step, so you really don't have to read Kanji to figure it out. My favorite finds..... Star Wars books for $1. Brand New Hardcover bestsellers for $1. The POWER of NOW $1. Japanese/English Dictionary for $1. Japanese Amigurimi pattern book $1 (can Kinokuniya do that?) Parking can be tough during the busy weekends and lunch hours. There is a frequent buyer/seller card, but it is going away by July. read more

Bookoff carrry both English and Japanese books, vhs, dvds, music cds. They also buy back books. Just beware that they DON'T buy back anything scruffy looking. There were several books that had a bent corner (on the back cover) and they wouldn't buy it back, saying it's damaged. Everything has to be absolutely pristine, and they usually pay like $0.50 - $2.00 for your books or dvd or music. That's how they make money. I had some brand new unopened (still in shrink wrap) anime and Japanese magazines, and they started opening the shrink wrap!!! Which I quickly stopped them from doing. After the ones they opened in shrinkwrap, they went on to tell me that the series is now 4 years old, so they can only pay $1.00 per anime manga. The shrinkwrap was plastic, and they could have told me that BEFORE they opened it. I was SOOOO mad. If they had not opened the manga, with the shrinkwrap on, I can sell it on ebay because it's brand new. Because they opened it, now I can't. So I just took everything back, and put it all up on ebay, where I sold the sets with a bit of discount, and definitely better than Bookoff. Sorry Bookoff, never coming back. read more

My daughter loves her Manga and animes books. This is the only place were we purchase them other than going to the Anime Expo in Los Angeles during July. It has a great variety of English Manga series and other collections of gently used books. The store is always organized and the staff is very pleasant and polite. It is located in the busy Marukai shopping center. It might take you a couple of rounds around the lot to find a parking space on a weekend afternoon. read more

I've never sold anything here, but you can really get some cool books and DVD's for cheap. So much manga, just shelves and shelves of manga! The games section isn't as complete as the Bookoff in Torrance, but you can still get a Dreamcast or even Famicom games here. Plus, they don't just sell Japanese language books. You might find a decent cookbook on the cheap, like Nobu the Cookbook for $7! read more

One of my favorite places to buy CDs, magazines, books, and DVDs. Best Aspect: They have super discount sections for each category! A $1-3 section for DVDs, CDs, magazines, books! So you can really score big and get a good deal on items. Organization: Usually at "used" stores, it is very difficult to find items, but not here! Everything is well organized, in alphabetical order, and easy to find (unless you're looking for something in Japanese, then you'll need help). But the staff is really friendly and they'll help you find anything you might be looking for. Quality: Very clean, and items are in good-mint condition. I've sold some items here before and they do inspect every CD, DVD, video game to make sure it is not scratched (so it wouldn't work for anyone purchasing it). Selection: Wide variety of items. It really is like a regular bookstore but with older items. Sometimes you might not find the latest Japanese fashion magazine, but if you do, they it's less than half the regular price. Trade in: They will buy back old books, video games, dvds, cds, magazines, almost anything they sell there. They don't take everything (not really old or damaged items) but it's a great way to make a little extra cash for stuff just sitting there. read more

What an amazing store to buy sell find interesting items. Anime all the way to Japanese books and Legos and cartoon characters as well as Nintendo DS's and game consoles. Two books to anything you could ever imagine besides kitchen appliances and name brand bags. They have guitars and everything what an awesome place I look forward to coming back. I love BOOKOFF. I hate BOOKOFF. A ridiculous number of steals and deals to be found here. A huge $1 section with many MANY diamonds hidden. A little bit of searching and you can find some sweeeet deals. They politely ask you to sell your books to them. They are not in your face about buybacks. It's just a casual inquiry if you are so gracious to give them an opportunity to acquire your collection. Sure, they won't give you much for your books that you sell. They won't take hardcovers without the dust cover (too bad for me since i always pitch the dust cover), and if your paperbacks are frayed or creased on the spine, they'll probably overlook those ones as well. But anything else that is in decent, resaleable shape - they'll take it! Huge sections of fiction, business, spiritual, arts. 1000s of movies, DVDs, VHS. Tons of music. Overpriced video games. And if you speak Japanese or read kanji - shit are you in luck! (I'm assuming, based on walking around and seeing all the Japanese language items.) Why do i hate BOOKOFF? Because i always spend cash whenever i go. But i guess that's a good thing, since it means i am gettin' my deal on! That was a terrible ending. read more

Great place to sell your books! I brought in several paperbacks in very good condition and they bought them all back. I sold about 8 books and got about $4. Not bad considering I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping to leave with a book or two but despite the size of the store, only half of the books were relevant to me. Stopped by yesterday and I was shopping for atleast an hour! There were tons of books, and for a great price too! I bought 2 of my favorite books from my favorite series in hardback for only $5 each. They were in perfect condition as well!! I bought the Game of Thrones box set for $18, and then about 6 other books for only $1 each. I deducted a star just because it could've been a little more organized, bit the staff was helpful and I found more than I needed! I will definitely be back again. read more

Quick and dirty summary. If you're coming to buy used Japanese comics/CDs this place is a solid 4 star. But selling items?... .hell no! a nice solid 1 star. (or 0 stars) I need to move out of country this month, and I had a hell load of comics I needed to get rid of, cause the cost of shipping it would be more than the cost of buying a new comic! Book-off was pretty much my only option, as selling it online will take too much time. I made quite a few visits. To give you an idea how fair their buying prices are...... I sold like 60-70 comics which were ALL in very good shape! Very few even had a yellowish tint from old age. I only got like $30~40 back....which means most comics weren't even sold for $1...... A SLIGHT yellowish tint will cause the comic's sell price turn from $1 to like 0.40 cents.... wtf?! ... Even without a yellowish tint.... many comics only sold for 0.40cents, not even $1 when the comic was worth $7 to $12!!! (bookoff is at least selling it for $5). This place was way better on pricing 2 years ago, whom ever they have pricing doesn't take consideration of condition and also just goes straight to highest listed prices on either eBay or Amazon.
