The menu is a good mix of drinks, snacks, and food. I'll come here if I'm craving a variety since there is a wide range of options on the menu. I wanted a caffeine-free drink and there were a few drinks to choose from. I'm always glad when boba shops have caffeine-free options. The strawberry corn milk was good. I love sweet corn flavor. I was able to adjust the sweetness. The boba was well made (cooked through) and sweetened nicely. The bento was solid, but I regret choosing spicy slaw. I usually like some spice, but I guess not with cabbage. You can choose from white meat or dark meat for the popcorn chicken. The white meat is still tender and moist though. My only complaint is how long it took for my order to get prepared. There was only one customer before me in line. I think it took 30-35 minutes. Or maybe my order was ready, but not placed on the counter... I was waiting patiently looking towards the counter. Ambiance is bright and there are people on their laptops studying or working.
Bopomofo Cafe, a place with such amazing customer service that just falls short with their drinks that it almost pains me to give the place three stars. The obvious pros: the attentive waiters. Noticed my friend was wearing a shirt made for my birthday this past year, noticed my name matched with the shirt, wished me a happy birthday. Hilarious and unexpected! Wanted an adjustment on sweetness on a couple drinks, was gladly served. Free size upgrades with a valid student ID. How accomodating! The obvious cons: the lackluster drinks. This was my first time, but my friend's eighth. He said its always hit or miss, erring on the side of miss. Such a wide range of types, colors, and flavors. There is definitely variety and camera-appeal, but the guava matcha was way too sweet from the guava, the teas tasted watery, and the addition of the milk diluted the flavor. I would love to give a higher review to childhood superstars, fellow UCSD alumni, Asian American representation Wong Fu, and maybe we all ordered the wrong things, but I would love to see the food quality match that of the service and vibes!
I've been a fan of Wong Fu for years and since we were visiting SD, I was excited to visit Bopomofo! I tried their Spring menu and got the High Mountain Paradise drink with tapioca. It featured fresh mango and peach. I really enjoyed how refreshing the drink was and how it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet (I opted for 0% sweetness level, so the fruit was the only source of sweetness). The staff was friendly. Lots of people were studying, but we found a spot on the counter and even had enough space for my baby in his stroller. We'd love to return when in town again!
First time at Bopomofo and I was impressed! Went here on a Tuesday evening and there wasn't any line! Most of the seats were taken inside from people studying but there was seating outdoors. (: Service was quick and friendly. Me and my friend ordered the spicy Taiwanese popcorn chicken and two drinks: the strawberry milk corn and the guava jin Xuan Oolong tea. Both drinks had a lot of flavor and extremely refreshing. The oolong tea was from their seasonal menu! They had a wide variety of different drinks from the regular menu and the seasonal drink menu! Their popcorn chicken was extremely juicy and the seasoning for the spicy chicken was so tasty. The chicken really was cooked to perfectly with the perfect crunch. It came with a spicy mayo dipping sauce which went so well with the popcorn chicken!! I am excited to come back soon to try their other food and drinks! Parking was also a plus. It had a huge parking lot unlike other spots in Convoy/Claremont!
I came in today for lunch, and their menu looked good. The cashier up front was great and gave us lots of recommendations. I ordered the seasonal green onion pancake chicken wrap. Green onion pancakes are my favorite and it's been a while since I've made one at home. I thought it would be a nice treat to have this, but my pancake was very burnt and the chicken tenders inside the wrap were soggy. I also ordered the guava matcha and although the guava taste was nice, my drink was almost all guava and did not taste like matcha at all.
I followed Phil from Wongfu forever, so it was exciting to be able to stop by a Bopomofo for the first time on our trip! Impressive bubble teas and food. The drink wasn't to my taste - I think I'm just not used to fruit with matcha, but I could tell the matcha was high quality as was the lactose-free milk. The bubbles had a really nice QQ texture as well. The Taiwanese popcorn chicken blew me away - I've had lots of this dish but this one was unique. You can choose breast or thigh, spicy or mild. The thai basil aioli really put this chicken over the top! The walnut shrimp burger wasn't to my personal taste (I think it needed more sauce and the walnuts didn't really stay with the sandwich, kept falling off), but my husband loved it so to each their own! I wish I lived here and could try everything on their menu! What a creative menu.
I had heard good things about Bopomofo and finally got to try it recently. We came for a late lunch and it was surprisingly busy on a weekday afternoon, we had to sit at the side table/counter (it seemed like most of the people sitting at the tables were studying). The restaurant was very modern and clean, and the staff was friendly for the most part. We ordered the mapo tots, honey walnut shrimp burger, and the weekday deal which included a regular milk tea and popcorn chicken. I really liked the popcorn chicken, it was very crispy (it's nice they give a choice of white or dark meat for the popcorn chicken). I also really enjoyed the mapo tots, it was a creative and tasty dish. The shrimp patty in the burger was also good/juicy, but it didn't seem to be anything special (and also seemed overpriced and a bit small). Otherwise we enjoyed the food/milk tea here!
Been back a few times and honestly I prefer the food over the drinks! The shrimp burger and popcorn chicken are so good, though a bit pricey. The triple strawberry matcha and ba-la matcha are decent, but the matcha isn't super strong and has a slight bitter taste. Wish they would bring back the lychee berry bliss!
Excellent food and drinks. Clean location and large. I like the popcorn chicken the best. You can choose white or dark meat for popcorn chicken. The chicken was fried perfectly and the flavorful. The aioli was perfect match. The crispy shrimp burger was good. But the weird part is the buns was cold and the shrimp patty was hot. So the temp change was totally weird to eat a hot patty and cold patty. Service was friendly and helpful. Will come back to this location again
Let's go grab a fun and creative drink? I'm down! Bopomofo Cafe is known for creative Taiwanese-inspired drinks and snacks, offering milk teas, fruit teas, specialty coffee drinks, and fun combinations you don't usually see at typical boba shops. This location sits between two major retailers, Costco and Target, but their part of the parking lot is rarely packed which makes visiting pretty easy. There were already a good amount of people inside when we arrived. Some were sitting and working remotely, others chatting with friends, and a few waiting for their orders. The main drink menu is displayed on the back wall near the register. There's also a QR code posted along the line for ordering and laminated menus near the counter. They offer a wide range of drinks and a lot of them sounded interesting, but the one that stood out the most to me was the corn milk with strawberry sorbet. I also added egg pudding to my drink. My husband ordered the brown sugar buzz. The employee helping us was very kind and made sure to adjust sweetness and ice levels the way most cafes do. The next part is really the only reason this visit loses a star. Our drinks took quite a while to come out. I'm usually a patient person but it seemed like there was only one employee making drinks. We waited for a while and the cafe itself runs pretty warm. With the large windows letting in natural light, it heated up quickly. Eventually our name was called and we picked up our drinks. One thing I immediately noticed is how much they care about presentation. The drinks looked amazing and luckily they tasted just as good. My corn strawberry milk was incredible. It was perfectly sweet and definitely corn lover approved. The strawberry sorbet sits on top so you have to give it a minute to melt and mix into the drink. Once it does, the flavors come together really nicely. I honestly hope they make a corn matcha in the future because that would be a showstopper. The egg pudding topping I could have done without though. It lacked flavor and mostly added a mild sweet gelatinous texture. I was hoping it would add more creaminess. The brown sugar buzz was one of the better coffee drinks I've had and I'm normally more of a tea person. It was slightly sweet but the espresso still came through nicely so it didn't just taste like milk. Overall super tasty drinks! I hope they work on reducing wait times soon.
Came here for some food recently and ordered the Taiwanese spicy chicken sandwich (regular and spicy) and the mapo tots. Everything tasted pretty good but the main thing that threw us off was that the bun on the Taiwanese spicy chicken sandwich was sweet. Inside the store was really nice and clean with a couple places to sit down and eat. The workers were also pretty nice and the food came out quickly! I'll be back to try some more of their menu items and drinks
Their meal deal plan gives you a free drink when you purchase food, which is an amazing incentive to come out when you really want to stay inside! There are plenty of parking spots as well as free WiFi. Table seating is pretty limited since many come here to study, but there are outdoor options as well. The music in the store makes dining in here feel lively. My friend and I got the spicy and regular popcorn chicken meals along with their assam milk tea. The baristas were super informative and provided great suggestions for sugar and ice levels on their drinks. Both chicken were juicy on the inside with light crisp outside. I was impressed by their thai basil and chili aioli, which paired well with the side salad and chicken. The creamy savory sauces make the chicken melt right in your mouth. The assam milk tea had a strong caramel flavor that wasn't too overwhelming. It served as a nice light pairing for my meal. I am always excited to see what they are innovating at Bopomofo and I will be coming back soon!
Bopomofo pulled me in with their Honey Walnut Shrimp burger (a must when ordering Chinese). Located in between the Costco Business center and Target, it is the perfect place for a post-errand treat. I ordered the Assam milk tea (unsweetened) and the burger. The milk tea was standard. I appreciated that they not only had lactose free milk/oat milk for no charge, but that the tea itself wasn't overly milky. The burger didn't quite live up to the hype for me, but it was still really good. The shrimp wasn't chewy at all, there was a nice crunch with the walnuts, and a tiny bit of heat with the jalapeño. It just didn't scream "honey walnut shrimp" to me. Service is friendly and there is ample seating-seemed like a lot of people were studying. I'll probably be back after my next business center trip!
Stopped by with some friends after getting Kbbq because I was craving a refreshing and light drink. Bopomofo definitely checks those boxes! Parking wasn't too difficult even on a busy Sunday afternoon. Service was quick and friendly. The ambiance was very clean and the temperature inside was perfect to cool down. I got the B.O.G. drink with lychee jelly at 25% sweetness. I felt a touch more sweetness would make the drink perfect and they were happy to make the adjustment. This drink is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I also tried the brown sugar pudding milk tea and definitely find their fruit drinks to be better and stronger. I also really enjoy the food from their kitchen. Everything comes out fresh and the flavors are really thoughtful, super fun and nostalgic. Overall, a spot that's rising the ranks on my list. I love Bopomofo's spicy popcorn chicken. It's always the perfect! Comes out piping hot and crispy! I come just for that sometimes and don't even order drinks. I think the drinks are really fun and I do enjoy them at times but I don't ever crave them. The cafe also gets crowded really easily so I don't like to hang around, but if they added more seats I think it would help with all the people standing around and blocking the way. read more
One of my fave spots to get matcha! I love the sweetness of the guava matcha. I took my cousin visiting from the bay and she loved it too. She said she'd have to go here again when she visits. I also like their food options. I like how open the space is. You can def come here to study or hangout. The last time I was here they had templates for people to make lunar new year lanterns. The workers here are super welcoming and friendly and made great recs on food and drinks. read more
This place barely has any seats. They have outdoor seating with no shade. Most people order togo. Ba-La Matcha is good. I don't remember the name of the other seasonal drink. It was alright. Delicious sandwich, although a little pricey. There are not a lot of non-fried food options. Indoor and outdoor seating available. I did not care for the straws they use for my boba drink. ; it was a combination of paper and plastic and tended to impact the flavor of my drink. I chose not to use it and saved the drink to have at home with my reusable metal boba straw. read more

First time here. Decided to try their classic matcha latte and do a little reading. Pretty solid, but would like to try the other varieties to see if it matches up to Matcha Cafe Maiko. Food/Drink: Got the Matcha Latte at 75% sweetness with oat milk, and it was pretty good. Not too sweet, and you can still taste the matcha, which I liked. I'd definitely order it again. Service: Staff was really nice--when I mentioned the oat milk, they even offered to remake it if I didn't like it, which I appreciated. The staff was also helpful on describing and assisting on what to select based on preference. Ambiance: It was super crowded when I went, but the space is bright, clean, and clearly a popular spot. I've been to all 3 Bopo locations and this one takes the cake! I absolutely adore the interior- gorgeous mural by Jennet Liaw, tons of seating options (tables, booths, bar/counter), and all-around beautiful natural minimalistic vibes. During the weekdays, this makes for the perfect studying/working spot. It's beautiful, not too crowded, and has amazing bites and sips. Huge kudos to Phil and the Bopo team for consistently crushing it! I decided to go with something I've never tried from their menu before and went with the Mint Matcha Latte. Mint with matcha is a pretty rare and severely underrated combo that I seldom see at other cafes. This one was delish! Super cool, super refreshing, and served with oat milk (huge bonus points from me for this milk choice). The team is really nice and helpful too! A really welcoming experience. read more

Love it when feedback is incorporated! We were asked if we wanted our drinks at the same time as food or before this time which I appreciated compared to previous visits. Came to try the bopo bowls (reminiscent of KFC's mash potato popcorn chicken bowls) and they were $8 each and delicious for the value. We love a seasonal offerings and new menu items. The honey roasted oolong milk tea with boba was delicious per usual, no complaints on drinks here. read more

QUICK TAKE// Cute vibey space with a fair amount of seating. Flavorful matcha drinks (though one of my faves is their Strawberry Corn Milk ), and creative Taiwanese foods, though unfortunately pricey (at least for me - SD is expensive to live in!) FOOD// I have been to Bopomofo a couple of times now so this review encompasses all the items I got. For drinks: BROWN SUGAR PUDDING MILK TEA W/ BOBA (tasty standard flavors you'd expect from other similar drinks) the FRANKIE'S MATCHA (found out I wasn't a fan of blueberry with matcha, so wasn't my favorite), BA-LA MATCHA (classic popular flavor which does taste good! I like over Frankie's), STRAWBERRY CORN MILK (THIS was it for me!!! So unique and surprisingly tasty!! Highly recommend). Food: HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP BURGER (my favorite sandwich item here for sure, just a little on the smaller side), SPICY POPCORN CHICKEN (tastes good! Standard on what you'd hope for popcorn chicken), BEEF NOODLE SOUP SANDWICH (tasted good, but for the price I wouldn't get again - not different enough from. french dip sandwich), MAPO TOTS w/ FRIED EGG (ooo this was a favorite too! Wanted to get boba, so we ended up here! The place is cute, and it was fairly big with a decent amount of seating! The atmosphere was chill, as I saw a lot of people using it as a study spot or as a casual family dinner location. I'd say that the service was relatively longer compared to other boba places, but the kind of food served here is unique from what I've seen! For drinks, we ordered a regular Strawberry Corn Milk, a regular Hojicha Latte with 75% sweetness, and a regular Brown Sugar Pudding Milk Tea. The Strawberry Corn Milk honestly tasted only like corn, and there wasn't much strawberry compared to corn in the drink. Even after mixing, the corn flavor was very overpowering. The Hojicha Latte was one of the better ones I have tried, but my girlfriend who ordered it said it was too sweet (she normally gets boba/other drinks at half sweet). I thought it was still pretty earthy, but I liked the sweetness level. I ordered the Brown Sugar Pudding Milk Tea, and though it wasn't particularly mind-blowing, I still enjoyed it! I did have a more floral flavor than other brown sugar milk teas I've tried elsewhere, but I liked that aspect of it. I like how it didn't just taste like milk, which usually disappoints me at other places. The pudding, however, was something I wasn't too crazy about. I thought that it wasn't very soft and was difficult to poke with the straw and enjoy. We also ordered the Classic White Meat Popcorn Chicken, and though we did not eat it when it was freshly made, it was still really good and crunchy, and I especially liked the green sauce it came with (unsure what it is haha). read more
we got the spicy popcorn chicken and a strawberry matcha! the popcorn chicken was pretty good, very crispy and spicy and flavorful. there was also no funky bits and i like how u can pick between dark meat and light meat. i got the strawberry matcha with regular milk which is lactaid and it was creamy and delicious. one thing that definitely sets it apart from other matcha spots is that they do not skimp on the matcha, it is so green! i would say their drinks are pretty sweet so i would get 50 if you don't like that read more

Walked over with my boyfriend to show him this cafe. I've never been to this location, only the Arcadia one which in my opinion is wayyyy better tasting than this San Diego one. Honestly I was pretty disappointed with the experience. Came in around 3pm after doing some errands in the next plaza, there wasn't anybody behind the cash register initially but it was okay because my boyfriend and I took a bit to choose what to order. We ended up getting their "combo order" which was a drink, Mapu Tofu Tots, and the Honey Walnut Shrimp Burger. So for the drinks we ordered a guava tea with boba and an additional milk tea (which I can't remember anymore because they were THAT forgettable). Both drinks were utter trash, both very watered down tasting. When requesting lower sugar and lower ice, it doesn't mean to just add more water. I still expect to taste tea as a baseline, but no, it was pretty much flavored water. The food itself wasn't as bad of an experience, but the flavors just didn't pair well. The Mapu Tofu ontop of tater tots literally tastes just like it sounds, but it didn't add anything positive. The Mapu Tofu would have been better served as a rice bowl option. The Honey Walnut Shrimp Burger was probably the tastiest thing, but it came out with COLD burger buns and with the large chopped walnuts, it just wasn't quite put together. I see the attempt at "Asian fusion" but this place has fallen short in all aspects. Very disappointing experience and honestly will probably never come back given that there are so many other restaurants in San Diego that execute their dishes and drinks so much better. I was really excited to try Bopomofo after hearing that it finally has come to San Diego but I was extremely let down by the drinks we got. Service was friendly and overall the drinks came out within 10 minutes. This review is stricly for the Hoji-Corn Latte and the Honey Roasted Oolong Milk Tea. I've never seen corn used in a tea drink before so the Hoji-Corn Latte really piqued my interest. After one sip, I was taken aback by the flavors. I obviously love corn but this drink reminded me if you were to drink the liquid in a can of corn that you find at grocery stores. The Hojicha flavor was complete masked and buried beneath the strong corn flavors. Yes, corn has a natural sweetness to it, but like how I mention the corn liquid in cans, it does also have a strong savoriness to it too. After drinking several sips, I honestly couldn't drink anymore and was borderline disgusted. Maybe this drink is enjoyable for some, but personally I can't find any redeeming qualities. We also got the Honey Roasted Oolong Milk Tea which on paper, seemed to be a safe choice with familiar flavors I'm used to. This drink also was not great and I didn't want to finish it either. I didn't mind the strong tea bitterness flavor, but for a milk tea, you would think there would be more balance to the drink which was nonexistent. The worst part of the drink was that it tasted watered-down. It's hard to articulate, but instead of a tea drink that might be a little more loose/watery, it tasted more like water with a slight tea flavor. I'm sure their other drinks and food are much better than the drinks that we got, but I can't bring myself to go back anytime soon. read more

I was very excited to try Bopomofo thanks to having lactose free milk and I wish I was as excited to go back. It was not good at all, I think it's the first time we couldn't finish our teas from a boba shop. The honey roasted oolong tea, I ordered with 30% sugar and lactose free milk. It tasted like water with a little tea mixed in. I don't know where it went so wrong. I ended up switching drinks with my partner since we didn't like our first pick. I then tried his corn hojicha tea and this was a miss as well. I expected sweet corn to cut the bitterness of the hojicha but they were both savory. It was thick and savory, I wanted to like it but the more I sipped it the more I couldn't drink it. We were disappointed, I should've stuck with my go to boba shops that day. They get an extra star for having lactose free milk as an option for all drinks, but the drinks were a one star. read more

I'm hooked!! That guava matcha is so amazing!! I've been back a couple times just for the drinks. The espresso drink is pretty legit too. I was unsure about the espresso drink and the girl who worked there told me to return it if I don't like it. I was shock!! Customer service is amazing!! They are CASH LESS establishment, but I think it's better to protect their employees. The place was a bit crowded as we went during lunch time, but they are quick with the drinks. There's sitting indoor and outdoor. The place is chill with music playing and everyone enjoying their food and drinks. We got the hainanese chicken tacos and mapo tofu taters. Delicious !! read more
Thanks to other yelpers, I did my first order online to prevent a possible wait. The ordering process was easy & even had some specials listed so we ordered from that. I opted for the spicy chicken sandwich-I loved the slaw it came with. There were 3 thinly sliced pickles underneath. The bread was nice and soft and crispy on the outside. It was a bit sweet so unexpected for me but I think combined with the spiciness of the chicken-it balanced it out. I also did like that they used shredded lettuce although it fell out while eating. My man got the shrimp burger which I mistook into mine and took a bit into it first. And wow-I liked his way better than mine. I haven't had a good shrimp burger before so I'd recommend this. We both got the side of mapo tofu fries. Looked quite small but actually it was the perfect amount for me. The tots were nice and crispy. They had a good ratio of mapo tofu. I added the basil aioli on it which leveled it up so I'd recommend that for an additional 65cents. As for the drinks. My boyfriend's guava matcha was great. The puree below tastes very fresh so I wonder if they are made in house. As for my haunted matcha latte, I got it with boba but didn't receive a boba straw so had to wait until I got home to try. Since the sesame on the bottom is dark the co-owner (who assisted) prob didn't realize there was boba in there. Overall it was a good drink. I'll opt to try a more classic drink next time. The quality is definitely in the matcha here. Very creamy and robust flavor. They packed everything very nicely and the whole shop is a nice minimalist vibe. Interior is simple and I love it. The packaging is also simple but quality packaging. I will say, they could/should label the food order (unless I missed it). And as nice as the cups are. I'm not a fan of the lid. Especially since we both wanted to mix our drinks, it's not the same outcome with stirring the straw-kinda hard to do with this lid type as well unless we remove the top to do so. Stopped here after eating spicy ramen at the shop next door to cool my tongue and ordered the honey roasted oolong milk tea with boba. The tea had good flavor but the consistency felt watery when compared to other boba shops. I'm not sure of its because they use powdered milk or 2% milk, but it didn't have the same mouth feel as the better boba milk tea shops in San Diego. read more

I waited forever for this place to open and I'm so grateful they came to SD - best boba spot period. Their drinks are all extremely well-made, using quality ingredients and always tasting fresh. My fave drink is the Orange Wang. Their kitchen is just as great. The spicy popcorn chicken is my favorite! I was able to attend their soft opening and the owner was so friendly and happy to see everyone. The workers here are very nice! The shop is a bit small, however with kind of limited seating so be prepared to wait. read more

I've only been here a few times but every item I order never disappoints! During the summer, i had their guava matcha drink and it gave me the nice refreshing fruitiness I needed on that warm day. This past time, I ordered an orange wang which tasted like an orange creamsicle which was perfect for the San Diego - warm Santa Ana weather! I've also tried their spicy popcorn chicken - the only not i have is some of the pieces were too big for my preference but it still tasted great with the perfect amount of spice level. I did have their tacos at the San Gabriel location, but they ran out of chicken this past time, so I'll just have to come back to try it here in San Diego. The store itself is neat and clean, with a beautiful green bonsai tree painted on the wall where you enter the line. It is very bright and open with 2 sides of the store with glass windows (sometimes the angle of the sun can get a little intense at certain parts, but its still a very pleasant place to just hangout). Cute bring spot with nice minimal decor. When they initially opened the store, the drinks took a looong time but now it's quite fast like any other boba spot. They do have some pretty interesting drinks and that's the most tempting aspect. However, my only complaint is that many of their drink specials have 50% sugar as the minimum sweetness option !! Great food, beverages and exceptional customer service. One of my favorite boba shops in San Diego. This is the most efficient and smooth businesses ever. The team goes above and beyond to ensure that customer have a great experience. The BA-LA matcha was nice and the popular chicken is delicious as usual. Tip- ordering ahead is a breeze, especially during peak hours. The setting is modern and sleek with ample indoor and outdoor seating. The establishment is always clean-especially the restrooms. Awesome place! I was searching for a hojicha latte in SD and came across this place. I also got the popcorn chicken w dark meat with the Thai basil aioli that was so good! The Thai chili aioli was a little too spicy for me! Great service and recommendation. read more
