It was spicy enough for me which I really appreciate. I haven't had spicy popcorn chicken in a while. Honey walnut shrimp burger - I haven't had McDonald's in YEARS and when I bit into this burger it reminded me of McDonald's Fish Filet Sandwich; the crispiness of the patty, the shredded lettuce and the sauce. I enjoyed it very much. HEY sesame milk tea - A lot of boba places don't have black sesame so I wanted to try their version. When I took the my first sip of the drink (I don't know why) but I tasted a burger. Maybe because I just had their walnut shrimp burger. Thankfully though, the sips after it tasted like black sesame. Brown sugar pudding milk tea - Without adjustments the drink is very sweet. The drink itself is sweet and so is the pudding. A lot of their drinks are lactose free which is great!! I went to try bopomofo as I remembered seeing a friend post about their chicken nuggets when they were visiting LA, not realizing it costs $12. You can choose white or dark meat/spicy or nonspicy. Both versions come with a dipping sauce. The chicken nuggets were crunchy and the dipping sauce was good, but not $12 good. I think the food is a bit overpriced and it takes a minute for it to be made. I had originally ordered a roasted oolong milk tea with 100% sugar, but did not like it - didn't like the tea they used and it was too sweet. I happen to see someone else getting their drink remade and thought I would ask. I ended up switching and getting the assam milk tea with 50% sugar. The second drink was better, but still not great, especially at $5.50-7 for a drink. The assam tea flavor was very light. I really appreciate the staff member/(drink policy) remaking my drink, but unfortunately, it just isn't to our taste. Wow, this iconic boba store and restaurant is a gem that deserves a 6/5 if possible. I first heard about this place as one of the co-founders is Phil Wang, who is a founder of Wong Fu productions and also frequents the store! They are known for their delicious popcorn chicken (perfectly crispy), but their milk tea is also exceptional. I love that they have non-dairy substitutions for free, and they don't have too many options, which means that their teas are all fresh and perfected. I had their brown sugar assam milk tea with 50% sugar and thought it was perfect in every way. There are 3-4 dining spaces inside and 4-5 tables/benches outside. There is even a place to wait for drinks to be ready. Wait times can be long (15+ minutes even if one arrives right when the store opens), but it is possible to order ahead and come pick up if one is in a rush. The service is amazing. The person taking our order told us all about the different types of drinks and specials. She had a bubbly personality and treated us with great kindness. Lastly, the theme and decor of the restaurant are well thought out. Based on the Bopomofo system that Taiwanese children use to learn pronunciations of words, the store has the characters throughout, a cool neon sign showing the area code of 626, and two tigers battling based on a children's nursery rhyme. read more

I finally got the chance to visit bopomofo after all these years! It's great that they have online ordering because it was very convenient to order as we were heading over. They have so many unique drinks so it was difficult to choose. We chose the Ba-La Matcha and Mango Peach Breeze. Close to $8 per drink after toppings. I wished they had more topping options as well. I got a text notification that my order was ready. The parking lot is not that big and is shared with other businesses so it can easily get full. There is a separate line for pickup and in person orders. It was quick and easy. The Ba-La Matcha was our favorite, highly recommend! I've never seen a matcha and guava combo and it tasted great. Strong guava flavor so it kind of overpowers the matcha. The Mango Peach Breeze was refreshing on a hot day. You can definitely taste the jasmine green tea but not so much the lemonade. There were also little fruit bits in it too. The boba is a bit soft for my liking but that's personal preference. Bopomofo has become an obsession. Not only do they have yummy drinks, but their food is delicious too! This cafe has been on my list for years, but being from NorCal, I haven't had a chance to visit until recently. We were staying in DTLA and Bopo was so good that we made the trek twice just for boba and food. My only regret is not having the stomach space to eat and drink more as there were so many more things I wanted to try. My favorites were the bala matcha drink and honey walnut shrimp burger. The popcorn chicken is up to standards and I loved their dipping sauce. Service is a bit slow, but that's cuz they're also processing tons of online orders. They're located in quite a busy plaza, but there is a parking lot available. Cute decor and a decent amount of seating inside. I decided to try their Honey Roasted Oolong Milk Tea and there was absolutely zero Oolong flavor or Honey. Instead I found a fly in my drink after drinking halfway. Unfortunately we came right before they closed so there was nothing we could do to fix it. I hope they would have a higher standard especially compared to the numerous other boba stores in the area. Disappointed considering how highly rated it is. The sesame milk we got was really good and the service was warm and friendly. Not sure if we'll be back but thought I'd share my experience. This place has a lot of potential to improve and would love to see some changes so that they can continue to get a lot of business. My rating is truly below 4 but the staff is friendly so that makes up for the additional star... The popcorn chicken had a nice flavor but wasn't very crunchy. I think the crunchiness would make this dish a lot better. IMO the dipping sauce can also be improved - it just tastes like green mayo. A refreshing, slightly acidic sauce in which can taste the herbs would be a game changer to complement the popcorn chicken. Unfortunately the shaken espresso was a disappointment. I've only been wanting to go to Bopomofo for the last five years and guess what, I finally got to go. I was scared when I first started reading reviews that everyone felt like it was overhyped because they have a huge following. We ordered ahead, per their recommendation, and they called our order literally when we walked in. It was a weekday in the afternoon so they were not busy at all because I can see they've really thought about the customer experience on their busy days and times, which I absolutely appreciated. The shop isn't that big but there are a few tables and chairs to eat. It's definitely a place where you have to grab and go due to the limited seating. I ordered the shrimp burger, mapo tofu tots, and a few seasonal drinks. The shrimp burger was legit because it was all shrimp. Nice balance of other toppings to the burger and the bun matched the sandwich well. The mapo tofu tots were also great but seemed fairly pricely for the quantity. I would also like a bit more mapo tofu to tot ratio...and when that happens, I would like a side of rice to clean up the sauce - ha! I can't believe I have yet to try Wong Fu's cafe until now, even after having lived in LA during their golden age of content creation. The phonetically named 'Bopomofo' Cafe offers a great mix of boba and hearty Taiwanese snacks that made this an exciting visit. For my fellow vegan/plant-forward friends, their Mapo Tots (no cheese) ($14) and Soy Popcorn Chicken ($14) are two staples that should be added to your eating arsenal. The tots are just as you'd expect with the spicy mapo flavor going really well over the potato pockets, and the soy meat karaage essentially reminded me of all the spots I ate in Japan that offered this selection. Sauce wise - only ketchup is vegan but it doesn't make or break the dish at all. For my drink, I ordered a Guava Matcha Milk Tea with Boba and it was fantastic. Oat milk as a non-dairy substitution is offered at no additional cost which is how it should be everywhere. I loved my drink for it's actual half-sweetness, chewy boba, and perfect blend of matcha. Note: restaurant gets packed and the layout makes it a bit tight when you're in line waiting to place your order. If you're arriving for lunch with a party, I recommend having someone go in to wait in line or claim one of the few tables inside. I came here on a Wednesday afternoon and supposedly it wasn't too busy. However most of the tables were taken, I was lucky enough to snag a spot. I decided to order the Iced Coffee Milk Tea and Spicy Popcorn Chicken. They both tasted really good. This was probably one the best Iced Coffee Milk Tea I had in awhile. Overall the service was good, and I like how there was some open space and how the tables are more towards the sides of the place so that way it keeps it open. Especially since they have food, too, and I imagine a lot of people like to sit down and eat. It's been a while since I tried the food, so I won't review it. But I love their Jasmine milk tea. My last visit they were out of jasmine so I got the blueberry lemonade instead. It was okay, but the assam black milk tea w/ caramel pudding was really good.
