And it's definitely not for me. Our waitress spoke a little English so when I asked for more Tea she brought chips and salsa instead. Then I asked for more Tea again. And she said no refills. A gem of a restaurant. We came here because of the Yelp reviews and were definitely not dissatisfied. The food was delicious and the service attentive and nice. We waited a few minutes because all the tables were taken and it's a small place but it was only a few minutes. Everything is very reasonably priced. The food is delicious. Ooh...hard to find this place with the sign torn down and your only indications is the illuminated neon sign screaming "Authentic Mexican" in the window. BUT, when you do find it (and it is pretty tiny), you DO feel like you've just been on a scavenger hunt and you finally found your hidden treasure!! *insert "Woo-Girl" noise here* :) hehe I knew immediately upon walking in I was in a REAL Mexican authentic place. The "real" Mexican as in from the country Mexico, as in, the Yucatan Peninsula Mexican food. Their chalk board menu screams of traditional Mexican foods that you would find in central Mexico such as: - El Pastor - A piece of pork that is marinated in a combination of dried chiles for 1-2 days and cooked vertically and shaved upon serving, similar to how one would cook lamb and cut lamb for gyros. - Chorizo - Mexican sausage which generally gets its deep red coloring from dried red peppers - Lengua - Cow tongue which is generally braised with garlic and onions which is tender in flavor and offers an aromatic deep flavor from the garlic and onions Looking at their salsa and pickled selection, it was your basic assortment that you would find anywhere in Mexico, minus the radishes and green onions, but what I did enjoy was seeing the shredded cabbage with shredded habaneras. The sauces were spicy and geeewwwd, but let me also share that I have a high spice tolerance so I would recommend to someone with an American palate to go easy on these sauces. And what else makes this place "authentic" Mexican you ask? Well, it's quite simple. It's the agua frescas that they have hiding in their refrigerator. I'm used to seeing these in jars where people would ladle them into a glass but looking at the size of this place, it's literally your hole-in-the-wall that you mark down in your book as a hidden gem which should be shared by all, so it's easy to understand why they don't have them in the traditional jars. :) AND, if you're not familiar with agua frescas: - Horchata - a creamy, cinnamon flavored rice milk that's like dessert in a cup. Honestly, I'm overlooking the tortillas because they were still close to the real deal and when you stuff them with the quality of meats and ingredients such as what was offered here at Borders Grill, you too will quickly overlook them as well. My coworker had never had authentic Mexican before and I'm soooo glad I was the first to introduce him to something that's been hiding waaay tooooo long here in Orlando. I have been going to this place for several years. Considering that I am half Mexican, good quality authentic Mexican food is very important to me. Everything at this restaurant is delicious, and not only delicious the prices are ridiculously inexpensive. You can get a great Carne Asada (Steak) Taco meal with rice and refried beans for $5.99. Also, they have this delicious rice drink that is called Horchata. This is a hole in the wall spot but that is what makes it so great it contributes to the authenticity. The flautas, enchiladas, burritos, sopes, and the taco salad are all amazing. The fresh guacamole is always a must. They have a variety of hot sauces to go with all the traditional Mexican dishes, which is the perfect combo. Some of the items we tried on our first visit included the enchiladas verde, fish tacos, and fresh-made guacamole--all tasty and highly recommended. Also, I hear that any of the daily specials are worth checking out (they're written on a chalk board behind the front counter)... so next time I stop in, I'll be sure to check one of those out. So driving up it looks like you're going to a half Mexican half thai place. It kind of sketched me out. I sat in my car wondering where I should go and if a half thai, half Mexican restaurant sounded legit, but walked in anyway because of the yelp reviews. The horchata is good, not the best I've ever had, but I'm from LA. The chips and guacamole were very very good. The chips are definitely fresh, and that's really important. They don't bring out nearly enough guacamole though for the amount they charge for it. We had to go back and order more of it. The tacos were incredible, just like back home, the refried beans were alright and the rice was gross. It had a weird aftertaste to it that in was just not feeling. My sister got the chicago burrito and she ate the entire thing, which is a pretty big deal for her. There wasn't nearly enough avocado in there to charge for the avocado though. Moral of the review, it's a good place, with authentic Mexican, but they are trying to save money in the avocado department. read more

How does this place have 4.5 stars??? I'm from Texas. Mexican and Tex-Mex are my favorite! Before even having tried the food, we were turned off because of the ceiling tiles. I wouldn't have even noticed had the AC vent not leaked on my coworker. The tiles are FILTHY, brown and black. The air vents haven't been cleaned, in who knows how long. (I love a good hole-in-the-wall more than most people, but just because it's small, doesn't mean it has to be dirty. Please take a look at the tiles next time you go in. The dirty, broken tiles have been "repaired" with painted plywood, instead of being replaced) Our chips and guac arrived just a few minutes after ordering them. Unlike a previous review, these were not made to order. The chips were room temp, not hot and fresh out of the fryer. Their salsa tasted rancid, as if the acid from the tomatoes had started to turn. I asked one of the food runners for some fresh salsa, which she brought, even though she seemed inconvenienced. Sadly, the "fresh" salsa tasted exactly the same. The upside, and the only reason I'm giving 2 stars, instead of 1, is because of the trio sauce caddy and the guacamole. Unfortunately, without fresh chips, the meal was mediocre, at best. Hopefully they figure out how to clean or replace the ceiling tiles. When I see cleanliness issues in the front of the restaurant, it always makes me wonder about the kitchen and staff. Reminds me of the Numero Uno restaurant in Orange Ave, but this one has plenty more parking. I'm not saying you shouldn't sit down and eat, just know that this a pretty popular place from 11-5 and maybe even later, so do prepare to not find a table or a small one at that. ENTREES Chicago Style Burrito with Pork Al Pastor filled with rice, beans, romaine lettuce, sour cream, onions, cilantro, tomatoes and slices of avocado. It was good, but not the best burrito I've had around here. The al pastor changed the pork taste to a more chorizo-like taste. It wasn't what I was expecting out of my pork, but then again, I don't think I've ever ordered anything "al pastor". If I order a burrito again, I would choose another meat. Flautas. Three lightly fried corn tortillas rolled with your choice of shredded beef or chicken on a bed of lettuce topped with crumbled cheese, sour cream, guacamole and side of rice & beans. I had them with shredded beef and they were tasty. The rice and refried beans were pretty good too. DRINKS Aguas Frescas de Pina aka pineapple juice. Refreshing! Their juices seemed to have been recommended by several other yelpers, so I would definitely be on the look out for their watermelon refreshment in future visits. CONCLUSION I can't tell you if this is authentic or not, because I've never been to Mexico or eaten straight from the kitchen of puros mejicanos. Their burrito failed to impressed me but their flautas gave me a hint of why people are hooked to this place. However, I think this is more popular due to its location than their flavor, in the sense, that it is surrounded by business buildings, so if anyone wants to step out and not eat from chain restaurants or fast food places or drive for more than 10 minutes, then this is one of the best spots. Their prices are very cheap, to the point that there's very little to no reason to buy from the neighboring fast food establishments when you can have better stuff here. In Orlando, there's plenty of Mexican restaurants and solid chains like Chipotle, Tijuana Flats, Moe's and Abuelo's. This place will not replace any of those for me, but because it's so close to where I work, I can see me visiting it often and agreeing with others that it is good food for cheap. Not great, but good. So if you are a tourist staying at the Double Tree Hotel at Kirkman's or similar places nearby, I do recommend to pay a visit here since it's just a skip and a hop away. Update: I took my girlfriend here for lunch, and she loved the quesadillas and the nachos. They were pretty good actually. A coworker also took my recommendation and tried out the flautas and she was raving about them. We managed to squeeze in two visits here during our brief stay in Orlando. We really lucked out since we kinda stumbled across this place. The fist time we went, we fell in love with the Pibil tacos (Yucatan style slow roasted pork). Savory, super fresh and I ended up going back for immediate seconds. I guess it was no surprise when we went back a couple days later that they were totally out of the Pibil. We ended up trying out four other kinds (they have a lot of varieties to choose from). The shredded chicken was excellent and we'd also recommend the Pastor (marinated pork). Also, this time we did a bit more research and discovered that if you showed them your room key from the Hampton (where we were staying) they will give you a free appetizer of chips and salsa. The chips were so fresh they came to the table still warm! The salsa wasn't especially hot (which was fine with us) but still quite flavorful. Upon further reviews from other people on Yelp, we also tried out their Aguas Frescas pineapple and would have to agree that it was pretty damn good as well. What Border Grill lacks in size, they make up for in flavor. The menu here is traditional Mexican street food with some Tex-Mex offerings as well. Everything is cooked to order in the open kitchen towards the back of the restaurant with fresh ingredients and fast service with no frills. That is what makes this place so special. The Taco's have become famous for those who have already found out about Border Grill. Taco offerings include, carnitas, shredded chicken or beef, seasoned beef tongue, chorizo and of course fish tacos. If tacos aren't your thing, they have a good variety of some pretty awesome burritos and enchiladas and a few other dishes and daily specials. Chips and salsa are complimentary, but we ordered a side of Guacamole and a side of Queso to get our dinner started. My guest chose the Trio Tacos with Carnitas. The pork was seasoned wonderfully and was topped with fresh cilantro and diced onions. All combos come with Mexican rice and refried beans. I really wanted to order tacos, but once I saw Milanesa steak on the menu, I had to order it, as it is one of my favorite things. Milanesa is a thinly cut, breaded and fried steak. The one at Border Grill is topped with fried potatoes and sauteed onions and has now moved into first place for my favorite Milanesa in Orlando. In addition to potatoes and onions, the dish is served with lettuce, tomato, Mexican rice, refried beans and your choice of three corn or flour tortillas. Sopapillas are popular dessert in a lot of Mexican restaurants. The deep fried pastry is usually served as a dessert, covered with honey or syrup and cinnamon. The sopapilla at Border Fresh is made for at least two people to share and is topped with chocolate sauce, honey, cinnamon and lots of ice cream and is a pretty fantastic dessert. read more
