My father is from Puerto Rico and I have visited several times so I know the food. And THIS is delicious Puerto Rican food. There was also a live band that was fun and worked the crowd. The place is small and busy on a Sunday evening so be prepared. Just a little ma and pa place so don't expect fancy, expect family. The atmosphere was very relaxed and island-like in that way. Every time we get a new restaurant in Beaverton I am always ecstatic. So I was very pleased to see this new place on Canyon. Its only been there for 7 weeks. The people who work there are extremely friendly. Since it's still pretty new it's quiet inside. The place is warm and bright. It feels like your transported from the gloom of Oregon to a sunny local. We got the following: Tostones Con Mojo De Ajo- Fried Plantains With Garlic Sauce Arepas- Fried Dough Mofongo Con Carne Frita- Stuffed With Chunks Of Fried Pork Pechuga Al Ajillo -Chicken Breast In Garlic Sauce The fried plantains and dough were savory. Love everything about this place! I got the mini mofongo with pernil pork lunch special and it was delicious. The description on the website is right, you don't need any extra sauce with the pork. It's juicy and packed with flavor (I found it just a little salty but I am very sensitive to salt). Since it was my first time trying this place I asked for a couple of side sauces to try anyway. The red sauce was not what I was expecting, a little sweet and not spicy. The garlic sauce was flavorful and oil based, it reminded me of the garlic sauce you might get with a delivery pizza (in a nice way!) and I liked it for dipping the plantains. This is a filling dish so even with the mini version I have enough leftovers for another meal later, great value! My lunch also came with a little bag of macaroons which were absolutely delicious - dense and packed with flavour and just the right amount of sweetness. The man working there was very friendly and the place has a fun ambiance - laid back but decorated thoughtfully and and in a really cute way. I've been to Boriken, or ordered takeout from, 4 or 5 times now. It absolutely, 100%, lives up to the hype. My boyfriend, little brother, and I adore it. Even my notoriously picky mother, who is a professional chef, loved it! I haven't had a chance to try everything, but here are a couple of standouts: - Canoa De Platano Maduro with criolla sauce: if you have never tried plantains before (I hadn't before trying this), they're like sweet potatoes, but better. The criolla sauce is so good (tomato-y with bell peppers?)! - Chicharonnes: basically popcorn chicken, but so good and addictive you would not even believe it. We always order chicharonnes, no matter what else we order, to share, and we're always fighting over the last pieces. - Chuleta Kan Kan: like a deliciously spiced, giant piece of bacon, only better. - Coquito: the super awesome woman who seems to run this place recommended this drink, it's rum-y, cream-y, cinnamon-y deliciousness. - Flan: I've only had this once, but if they have it when you go, absolutely order it. It's by far the best flan I've ever had - so creamy & smooth. I can't wait to try to try some of the more adventurous looking foods - particularly excited to try the mofongos! If you needed more reasons besides the best food in Beaverton to try it, Boriken is just a super fun place to eat. The decorations are really cool, I particularly love the benches for seating. I went during restaurant week and had an amazing experience. We dined in and had the pork mofungo, chicken stew, and shrimp plantain canoe for dinner. Everything was very moist and well flavored. Definitely add some of their house made hot sauce into the mix for a good kick that's not over whelming. I enjoyed their vinegar hot sauce for a bit of tang. We also had their 3 pastries. The guava was my favorite with the sweet and a little tart guava in the middle, followed by the Bavarian cream filled they was stubbly sweet with a hint of vanilla, and finally the guava cheese that was well balanced. I spoke with a very nice lady that recommended the mashed plantains with slow cooked pork. Wow!!! One of the most satisfying meals I have ever had. Three stars for the food. It is good but they really lack customer service skills. They had a young lady in the past that was super attentive not anymore. Both the man and woman just don't understand what is customer service regarding serving people. We call this being a "jibaro" but not in a good way. I always feel is an inconvenience receiving you when you enter, checking on you, taking an order or even when you pay. I feel they only care about the transaction and not anything else. I went here with a friend for dinner and we were excited to try Puerto Rican food, as neither of us had ever eaten it. Looking at the menu I was somewhat surprised by the prices. Entrees were in the $14+ range with appetizers being commensurately slightly more expensive than I would have expected. That being said, good food is expensive so we ordered with high hopes. I ordered the Carne Frita, my friend ordered the Bistec Encebollado with a Mafongo upgrade, and we split an order of alcapurrias. The alcapurrias arrived first, and were quite tasty. The banana fritter was fried crispy and wasn't too sweet and the filling was seasoned well if uncomplicated. When the entrees arrived, they did not look particularly appetizing. The Bistec was an unpleasant shade of grey and was particularly alarming. The Carne was slightly overcooked and under-seasoned. The Bistec was just a disaster, under-seasoned and quite chewy. The rice and beans that came with the entrees were very good though. The mafongo served with the Bistec was bland and its texture was similar to cold slightly undercooked potatoes. The service was fine. Based on the quality of the meats this would be a 1 star review, but the appetizer and beans and rice were pleasant. I might return here for a rice dish were it not for the prices, but the meat entrees would not be worth eating at any price. read more

My Puerto Rican friend says this is THE best Puerto Rican restaurant food he's ever had in his twenty years in the mainland U.S., which I think says a lot, as he visits Puerto Rican restaurants whenever he can. The vegetable mofongo was delicious, as were the chuletas guisadas, according to him; the yellow rice was incredibly flavorful; the desserts were good as well; and the avocado was just right! Generous portions and very delicious food! It was pretty busy on a Saturday night, but not so much so that you couldn't find a seat, or you had to wait. However, I think the atmosphere would be slightly more pleasant when the weather isn't so hot, because the combination of Portland's current heat wave and the heat from the kitchen made the place extremely warm without central A/C! Because everything is homemade, be prepared to wait a bit, but in the meantime you can enjoy a very delicious sangria. I loved all of the sauces they provide you for your meal. I will most certainly go back again soon! I always order their tostones with their bottled mayoketchup - if you don't know what that is, just try the sauce with your meal! The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside, it's been decorated with lights, Island decor, and Puerto Rican signs and posters. And they use mason jars! That is my simple review - just eat here, you won't be disappointed. On a different note: All of their portions are exactly measured out and pride and care are abundant. I was really looking forward to going back to Boriken, there were a couple of items on the menu that really intrigued me. My daughter and I arrived on a sunny Sunday afternoon, and the place was full and lively, which is always a good sign. An older lady approached us and loudly barked, "To-order?!" I said no, that we would like a table. She angrily stared at me for an uncomfortably long time like waiting for an answer, which I gave three times, and then exploded about how they were too busy and couldn't accommodate us. I get it, you're busy, but at this point in time in our country with businesses likes this closing all the time, being super busy is a seriously great problem to have! Just be nice, I don't mind waiting for great food and to support local small businesses. She was so incredibly rude that I didn't just leave immediately, I won't ever come back. The pork mofongo was delicious. Great with the creamy garlic sauce. The pork was great. A tad dry but tender and paired well with the crispy plantines and tasty sauce. The yellow rice was also very flavorful and tasty. The shrimp empanalidas paired with their home made vinegar chili sauce was also delicious and beats many other empanalidas served at upscale latin american restaurants in portland. The beef tripe soup was light and tripe was cooked very soft. All in all a very nice meal and pleasant experience. The waiters, im guessing also owners, were very nice too. With only seven people at four tables in the restaurant when we got there, it took 50 minutes to get most of the food delivered and no communication about the hold up. It's creamy but full of spice! 8/10 -Papas rellenas; good size but not enough meat stuffing 6/10 -Coquito; very yummy! Creamy, topped with cinnamon. I have been in Boriken Restaurant four time in the last two months. A nice place with a menu like no where else would offer. I suggest you first try appetizer "bacalaitos". For entree, try the "Trifongo" filled with skirt steak (and salsa roja) or filled with any seafood. Trifongo is Boriken's version of the beloved Puertorican "Mofongo". Mofongo is a mashed green plantains with garlic, olive oil, and criollo seasoning. The awesome Trifongo is a mashed combination of green plantains, ripped plantains, and the delicious Yucca (cassava). Of course, always with garlic, olive oil, and the Puertorican seasoning. For dessert, try the guava pastelillo. You will be served by the owners; great people. read more
